CHRONICLE X - Hyperlinked Reference Manual

Shoot

Shoot Attack refers to the attacks at a non-Adjacent target. Each Model and Alien Unit potentially has two Shoot Attacks available: short range and long range. They are listed on the stat card, usually with the short range attack's range and Shoot Attack Value on one line, and then the long range attack's range and Shoot Attack Value on the next line below the short range attack. A Shoot Attack is a short range attack if it is within the short range limit, and otherwise it's a long range attack if its within the long range limit. (You can't choose to use a long range attack if the target is within short range.)

Once the combat type and relevant Combat Values have been determined, all Attacks are handled in the same basic way.

Attack

Attacks in Chronicle X can come in various forms; the main ones are Melee Attacks, Shoot Attacks (of short and long range) and Psychic Attacks. For each type of attack, a Combat Value is determined, first by using the relevant basic stat for the type of attack (usually given by the stat card or board for the attacker), and then by applying any effects and modifiers that apply.

Once the Attack Combat Value has been determined, the attacker then rolls that many Combat Dice -- but never more than five dice. If the attack has a Combat Value higher than five, only five dice are rolled, but for each Combat Value point higher than five, the attacker may convert a BLANK side to a HIT.

Then the defending Combat Value against the attack is determined, and the defender rolls that many Combat Dice -- but never more than five, and no bonus effect applies if the defending Combat Value is higher than five. Then the total number of SHIELDs rolled by the defender cancels out that many non-Critical HITs rolled by the attacker, and then the remaining damage is subtracted from the defender's health.

If the defender's health is reduce to zero or less, the defender is killed, and the Model is taken off the board, and Heroes who kill enemies gain one Experience Point for each Model killed.
