Red Squares on the Mission Map are marked by having one or more of its side highlighted in red, which indicate areas which are more exposed to Attacks. Red Squares give -1 Defence Value against Attacks on a target on the Red Square if the Attack is coming from a direction that goes through one of the highlighted sides of the Square.
ERRATA FROM ARCHON REGARDING RED SQUARES: "These represent open ground that makes the model an easy target. Any models on a Red Square reduces its Defense Value by 1. If one or more Red Squares interrupt a wall, additionally to being Red Squares, these are treated as pathways via which a model may move and draw Line of Sight to other models through the wall.
Map Tile
The Mission Map in Chronicle X is built up from a number of Map Tiles. The exact size of the Mission Map can vary in principle, but in normal cases, it is built from four by four map tiles, with each Map Tile being five by five Squares, with each Square being capable of holding one standard-sized Model. XXL Models take up two by two Squares.
The core game contains 20 Map Tiles, which are double sided. Each face of each Map Tile has a code name, which is a letter, or a digit, or a combination of a letter and a digit. The Missions in the Narrative Mode have a specified Mission Map layout with some or all Map Tiles specified by name.
Some of the Squares on Map Tiles are highlighted in various colours, with various meanings. Three have ongoing effects during gameplay:
- Red Squares (icon: broken shield) are places of high visibility, giving a -1 Defence penalty if the Line of Sight line would be drawn through any of the sides of the Green Square that are highlighted in red.
- Green Squares (icon: whole shield) are places that provide good cover, giving a +1 Defence bonus if the Line of Sight line would be drawn through any of the sides of the Green Square that are highlighted in green
- Yellow Squares (icon: arrow) are places that can be deployment points. Which ones actually are deployment points is decided during Mission setup.
And two other only have their effect during Mission Map setup, but place tokens that have ongoing effects during gameplay as long as the tokens remain:
- Blue Squares (icon: spanner) are places where Spanner tokens are placed during Mission setup.
- Orange Squares (icon: flame) are places where Hazard tokens are placed during Mission setup.
Additionally, white borders are used to make walls and other environment structures that block Line of Sight in the same way as walls.
