DATA FILE NOTES & SUGGESTIONS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * Do NOT contact Cary Thomas for assistance in creating your forms or views of this data. There are many easy to use database software applications. Please read their respective documentation on creating indexes, links (relationships), forms and reports. This LOCUS Index database is provided in Dbase III format. All popular database applications should be able to import or use this format. FILES & FIELDS: File Fields ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~ AUTHORS.DBF Author name file ---> Author1 first author (lastname, firstname) ---> Author2 second author ---> Authnum incremented number assigned to authors for link to REVUS.DBF REVUS.DBF Review file ---> Authnum number assigned to author in AUTHOR.DBF ---> Title title of work ---> Date date review appeared in LOCUS ---> Reviewer name of reviewer (lastname, firstname) ---> Issue whole number of issue ---> Vol volume number ---> Number number within volume OBIT.DBF Obituary file ---> Name name of deceased (lastname, firstname) ---> Magdate date of magazine listing ---> Born birth date ---> Died death date INTERVU.DBF Interviews/profiles file ---> Name name of subject person (lastname, firstname) ---> Date date of magazine ---> Intervur name of interviewer (lastname, firstname) REVUR.DBF Lookup data file of reviewers ---> Reviewer Name of reviewer (lastname, firstname) ---> Ordinal numerical field to sort names The database files are provided WITHOUT indexes. Here are some suggested fields to index: In AUTHORS.DBF: index on Author1 In REVUS.DBF: index on Authnum + Date In OBIT.DBF: index on Name In INTERVU.DBF: index on Name AUTHORS.DBF & REVUS.DBF are used in relationship to each other. Their common field is Authnum. To get a useful link between the two, index AUTHORS.DBF on Author1; then index REVUS.DBF on Authnum + Date. In your database application create a one-to-many link, or relationship, between Authnum in AUTHORS.DBF & REVUS.DBF. AUTHORS.DBF should be the master or parent file, with REVUS.DBF the child file. Once a successful relationship has been created, and the appropriate forms designed, you will see all an authors' reviewed titles as you move through the AUTHORS.DBF records. Miscellaneous Notes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * 3rd or more authors/editors are not listed, only the first two authors or editors. * Some titles may be truncated due to excessive length. * For REVUS & INTERVU data, the significant portion of the date is the month and year. Some authors may have more than one listing in a single month, so the days start at 1 and progress incrementally within the same month. The seperate day dates are insignificant. Locate the review or interview by the month and year, ignore the day date. * REVUS are both full and short length (Short Takes). The short reviews are NOT identified as such. * INTERVU includes formal interviews and author profiles, they are NOT identified as interview or profile. * All dates were entered in the format MONTH/DAY/YEAR, into date fields (not alphanumeric fields). Dbase date fields should be automatically adaptable to European display formats. ------------------------------------------------------------------- The LOCUS Index, April 1987 to June 1996, is considered FREEWARE.
