I don't mind. I wouldn't even mind if you work together on 6 robots and enter them all in the race, one per person. And in Maido Remm's BORS races you can enter several robots per person. With 6 cooperating robots you could develop new interesting strategies: * Driving side by side, so that no other car can pass. ;-) * 5 kamikaze robots that work as bodyguard for the sixth robot. * etc. Henning ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Apr 1997 15:27:25 +0200 (MET DST) From: bm321465@muenchen.org (Henning Klaskala) To: rars@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: random events Message-Id: <199704101327.PAA00204@henkhost.muenchen.org> Content-Type: text Kim Laurio wrote: > Actually, it hasn't got the name 'Jammer' for nothing. Lisa is fast until she receives too much damage from passing slower cars. Then she pays back by switching to a slow mode that causes problems for the other cars... :-) At the end of the last races Lisa's average speed was even lower than Jammer's. This gave an advantage to quick and agressive cars. We had 5 cars from Henning, 4 cars from me, Jas from Jurgen Sang and a rookie driver Sebastien TIXIER with robot Magic (finished overall third!). All three races were similar with Apex2 dominating. Henning tried his old trick - he submitted one fast and four slow cars - did not completely work. His slowest H5, did not finish a single lap and next slowest H4 (travelled at 40 mph) was taken out after while. Of course, "blind" competitors received their damage too, but this was spread over many cars and did not take them out this time. After the H4 was out, only raw speed decided the winner. H1 was extremely fast in qualifying, but "too careful" in race. Well, next race is longer, track is narrower and I probably make car size to 10x15 feets to see them better on longer tracks. I am sure my cars won't survive next race without further improvement. Thus, it cannot be stressed enough - you do not need a fast car, just a car that finishes the race. The cars that have been submitted will continue until they are replaced or removed by author. Suggestion for those who have not submitted a bot - take a simple robot (turtle5.cpp is a good starting point) make minor modifications (do not forget put in credits to Ralph) and submit it - you could be the winner. P.S. I also included Rachel by Mark Nau in that race. After little tweaking it seemed to be a good example of fast and simple car. Although H1 was slightly faster in qualifying, Rachel is rather universal and what is most important - it is understandable to other RARS robot developers too. ============================================================================ ==== SUBMISSIONS Next race is at Mlwaukee 1 mile oval. 3 races, 100 laps each, -s1 option. It is built from similar segments than oval2 and should be easy to make around. Submit any number of car source files to mremm@ebc.ee The deadline for submissions is 23rd of April 8AM GMT. ============================================================================ ==== RACE RESULTS All robots of this and following races are public. Download them at http://www.ebc.ee/~mremm/rars/rars.htm (25kb). If you have PC, you might want to download bexe1004.zip, which contains rars exe file for dos (150kb). Just type "rars -p3 -nr67094" and you will see exactly what happened in the race (all other variables are compiled into program as default). I made movie too, but those files are >800kb. On one hand, it would provide a new degree of variability to the races, but on the other, people may become discouraged when a random event has a significant impact on their cars' performance. To this end, I would like to suggest the idea of 'uniform random events'. The simplest example of this in real racing is weather. The weather varies slightly (or not so slightly) from one event to the next, but affects everyone uniformly. How equally the effect is depends on the specific details of the team, but one team isn't unfairly afflicted with the condition which others are spared. In the same manner, RARS incorporates a number of variables which are constant for all races (e.g. air drag). What if one of more of these variables was tweaked slightly before each race session. The effect could be from non-existant to significant depending on the variable(s) and algorithms of the car. By keeping the variation slight, the effects shouldn't be devastating. Just one man's opinion. - Christopher Lund ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Apr 1997 22:56:40 +0000 From: Robert Wilderspin To: rars@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: Results of 10.04 BORS race Message-ID: <860711033.0616360.0@feverish.demon.co.uk> Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT [On 10 Apr 97, Maido Remm spake thusly] [snip] > STANDINGS > Maido > Remm, 60 > mremm@ebc.ee > > Jurgen > Sang, 42 > jusa@darkstar.bb.bawue.de > .. Actually there was no trick at all: I submitted some extremely small cars (~100-200 bytes!) just for fun, although I knew that one of them (H2) would be a serious obstacle for my fastest car H1. > I could post drivers to the list or to anybody who wants it. Please put them on the FTP site or mail me a copy! Obviously, you don't want this. It'd be interesting to see such behaviour though, just not in a competitive race, and especially not one that I'm trying to win. :-) rob. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Apr 1997 22:00:32 -0400 (EDT) From: Daniel Brooks To: Rars mailing-list Subject: Re: newbie Message-ID: Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII On Thu, 10 Apr 1997, Robert Wilderspin wrote: :)[On 9 Apr 97, Daniel Brooks spake thusly] :) :)> We have all the materials we need, but would :)> just like to know if it would be accecptable for 6 new C++ :)> programmers to work on one robot. :) :)As long as you promise not to be very good. Well, I won't promise anything, but we probably won't start winning until a couple af races. We actually are far ehind where we are supposed to be in our studies because we had trouble ordering the compiler, so I wouldn't worry alot. :)Actually, your lessons would be more fun if you were all working on :)different cars, getting some local rivalry going as well. I just :)wish that they did RARS in _my_ lectures. Oh, the fights we could :)have over that... Yea, but like I said, we don't all know that much about C++, let alone the math I've seen in the robots I've downloaded. I'm only a sophmore, and havent had trig yet. I am going to borrow a trig text book to learn as we go. Fortunatly, there are several juniors that have had trig.
