The following taken from Channel 4 Teletext (page 621).

The Charlatans have decided the show must go on, despite the tragic death of
their keyboard player Rob Collins.

The band say they will honour all live commitments - including supporting
Oasis at Knebworth - and release a new single, One To Another, on August 26.
They will then finish work on their new LP.

They will also keep the song's video - filmed with Rob just a week before he
died in a car crash.

The Charlatans say they're staying together after the death of founder Rob
Collins because "it's what he would have wanted".

A band statement reads: "The band, their management and associates are
naturally devastated with the loss of not only an influential member, but
more so a great and loyal friend.

"We have to continue in his memory. He lived it like he loved it, and he ran
out of time.

Awfully sorry Dan, I certainly didn't mean to get on anybodies back, let
alone put their place of origin down (isn't it strange how people can
mistake a small observation for a personal attack?). You were quick to
assume that my tone is sarcastic, but maybe if you just dropped the macho
bullshit you would have perhaps realised that I was being sincere.

I guess some people are just too quick off the mark (a bit like dear old
Linford!)

Cheerio for now

P.S. When someone has something interesting to say, then perhap you'll be
treated to my patronising wit more often. Was that snappy enough for you?

Apart from his truely amazing keyboards. Let's not forget that Rob also
did "back up" vocals, which in my opinion went really well with Tim's vocals.

I know its quite selfish to start thinking about the future of the band
at this moment in time. But I personally feel that the band cannot go on
as a 3 instrument piece. Too many bands are like that and sound the same,
and I'm scared they'll end up sounding like Oasis or something. I know its
selfish in someway but I think they should consider getting a new keyboard
player, if they decide to go on (maybe a chemical bro?, doubtly). It
doesn't have to be a hammond, but just something, so they can work on
different sounds.

Rob I'll miss ya, and will engrave in my mind the left over images of
your 3 performances I attended.

they're a bad band

they don't sound like the beatles. true they capitalize on the fact that too
many people say they are the next beatles, but ultimately in the end they

Oh now come on! Haven't you listened to both bands? Be realistic for a
second here. Hell, that one song (don't know the name of it, but they sure
play 'er on the radio alot) is a direct rip of of 'Imagine'.

I would guess that you don't think that the Tea Party (well, if you've heard
of them) sounds like Led Zeppelin mixed with the Doors.

Fuck, I mean even Noel Gallagher admitted to ripping of the Beatles. And he
got a good laugh about it too.

Hey everyone!

I just heard this great new band the other day. They're so good that
I feel that they warrant some discussion on this list. True, they don't have
much to do with what we've been discussing, but who cares?
Theyr're called THE CHARLATANS!!!!!

Sorry, just kidding!!!!!
To put in my humble opinion, I like almost every band that's been bashedon
this list (the Roses, Verve, Suede, and, yes, I'm sorry, but Oasis is pretty
good despite all the similarities...)

No, the Beatles are a great band. My point is that Oasis is a bad band
because they can't be original.

Ripping off a good band doesn't make you a good band. It only makes you cheap.

A good band develops its own sound. Creativity is a part of good music,

Shithead hypocrites are the best. The new suede single is called trash, and
that's exactly what it is. NO! I am joking. It is grrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!
It has quite a 'tinny' sound to it, the vocals are distorted and high
pitched, and it is just a damn cute little song. When you hear it, you will
understand what I mean by cute. Oh, and it is available on two CD singles,
bith with two seperate bsides. I have CD1 and am awaiting CD2, but the
bside "Europe is our playground" is really good. Very different from former
suede, with a deep base line and almost a trip hop beat to it. Well,
almost........ Check it out for yourself.... it should be available early
August (the 3rd, I believe) in NA music stores. It was available for
listening at the nme web page a little while ago, it may still be.

Anyways, sorry to be so un-charlatans on this posting.......

Why does everyone keep going on about Oasis and the Beatles and how folk
are slagging these bands off- has everyone forgotten that this is a
Charlatans mailing list and we should be talking about The Charlatans and
no other band.

As to the future well the new single 'One to another' is absolutely amazing
in every respect and I'm sure the band can pull it off - they have done it
before and will again, everyone should have a bit more faith and after
seeing this band about 15 times live I have nothing but faith in the future
and what they can acheive !

Although I would take the charlatans over Oasis in an instant, this

So you speak for all Charlatans fans? I thought the last time this
subject came up we all came to an agreement that this list was a place to
discuss good music, especially the Charlatans. Some of these bands have a lot
in common. For example Mark Collins and Noel Galagher were both roadies for
the Inspirals.

I think its cool to talk about other bands. Just remember that
everyone has the right to their own opinion. Here's mine- Noel Gallagher
can't sing and sucks at guitar. Suede sucks so bad that I walked out of
their show in the second song.

Raj-
I think that I can speak for everyone when I say that we're all
anxiously awaiting ANY new material (be it single or album; the single hasn't
exactly reached the states yet) from the Charlatans, but what is the harm in
discussing other bands in whom list subscribers shares a mutual interest in
this period of apparent inactivity?
There are a lot of British music fans who have a hard time getting
info/updates on their favorite bands because they live in areas of the world
that require the purchase of expensive import magazines for such info.
The reason why some aren't on a different list for every band that we
like is because we don't have time to sort through 300+ e-mail messages every
time we turn on a computer.
I can understand your anger when none of the messages from the list
have to do with the Charlatans, but as soon as they regroup and make a few
announcements regarding the future of the band, the tour, the album, etc. I'm
sure the list will pick up again.
	Respectfully,

But the point of a "mailing list" is that if nothing is going on with the
charlatans, then there shouldn't be any messages. Its a mailing list,
hence only when their is new information should their be an e-mail.

I have to disagree with you, when you said that most people on this list
share common band interests. This is in fact not true, as we have seen
in the past 20 messages. People subscribe to this list, with ONE common
interest "the charlatans", and nothing else. I'll agree that sometimes
other band comparisons may pop up. But to the point of saying that you
would want other band discussions because you don't want to subscribe to
other lists defeats the purpose of a "charlatans" mailing list.

If you want information about other british bands, without buying those
expensive magasines. Try the following site:

Hope this helps.

noel knows he should ride this oasis/beatles comparison as long as he can
cause he knows he should be worried about when it's all going to stop and

Hi!

Let's cut this out. Though this is a Charlatans mailinglist, it doesn't
mean we can't mention other bands. These bands are mainly in the same
music scene as The Charlatans, and are therefore quite relevant to people
who is into that kind of music. I don't like one-sentence messages and
big slagg offs as i think those things can be sorted out with private
mails. But serious questions and discussions about bands from "the
alternative" scene, shouldn't be hard for us music lovers to handle. I
can say this, also since i run this lovely list . Anyway, I love Oasis, I
love Suede, I love The Beatles, I love Blur, i love Kula Shaker, I love
Manics, I even love Howard Jones. The Charlatans is the best though, and
they are warming up for Oasis on August the 11th. THAT's pretty relevant
to me. Lighten up people. Love is all around me....

	Nowhere did I say that MOST of us share common band interests;
The only time that I ever took it upon myself to speak for the whole list
is when I said that we were all anxiously awaiting new Charlies material.
I said that SOME of us were talking about mutual band interests. I'm sorry
if I didn't get my point across; I intended for the message to have an
apologetic tone and perhaps explain why these discussions were occurring.
I wanted to avoid most of the hostility and sarcasm that usually appears on
this, the "Oasis-bashing list". Here's something for the lot of you:
Although I am quite fond of the band, there is an internet site that I
came across about a month ago that a lot of you might enjoy. It's called the
"Oasis Hate page" (or something like that). I don't know the exact address,
but you could use net search...
Sorry about the other band content, I'll try to avoid it in the
future.I do know about the supersonic guide, but I don't have internet access
at home.

As I waded through the twenty odd messages concerning Oasis, Suede, Beatles,
and simultaneously listened to the new JTQ lp, I thought hey, wouldn't it be
cool if the Charlatans drafted James Taylor to finish the next Charlatans
LP?? Sheer Heresy, say you?! Maybe, but consider that Taylor was rockin the
keyboards with the Prisoners and JTQ well before the Charlatans made it, and
both play awesome Hammond grooves, it is maybe too obviously brilliant for
most to grasp!

For those who doubt, ...check out the Prisoners "Taste of Pink", "Last
Fourfathers", and "Out from the Cold" if memory serves.

As my two bits, I will throw in that on their first tour in the States, when
they played small clubs, Oasis sounded great. Their last record and tour
both sounded like they were produced by a metalhead teenager with no
experience and was drunk on Mad Dog. Yes, like total shit. Let's hear it
for the Beatles' producer George Martin and the band.

Also, was there this much comparison between the last Charlatans LP and the
sound of the Rolling Stones, et al.? Artists naturally borrow, steal pieces
of stuff they hold dear, hoping too come close to the feeling of their
original creators and to expand...

By the way, the new Bluetones sounds like Ride and Stone Roses big time! on
first listen. Let's hope at least the latest (last?) Charlatans record
sounds ORIGINAL and do justice to Rob's innovative work over the years.

I'm done ranting now. Bring on the backlash.

Good call. I hate Owen Morris, and I think he ruins every record he

yes, a good point.

Wow I completely disagree here. The Stone Roses comparison, I suppose, is
valid to an extent, but only the happier pop songs off the first album if
anything. But I don't think that the Bluetones have one ounce of anything
similar to Ride. Ride had fuzzy guitars, phenomenal drum lines, and rough
vocals. The Bluetones have jangly guitars, standard drums, and smooth
vocals. I'm not getting that one, sorry. (Ride is still on my Top 5 bands
of all time list, I'm afraid.)

I personally think that the Tones borrow their influences more from the
Liverpool and London scenes of the late 80's than anything else, with a hint
of Squeeze-esque "proper songwriting" thrown in for good measure.

I don't want to start a Bluetones thread, but it's interesting that I just
got this e-mail, cause I just walked in the door from aimlessly driving
about for an hour listening to the Tones. I was just thinking as I was
pulling my car into the parking lot outside, trying to figure out just what
makes the Bluetones such a good band (and I DO reeeeally like them,) and
more interestingly, WHY they're popular, because their music and style
remind me of bands that I love but that the British press have never been
too keen on, like the Trash Can Sinatras, for instance. Not that it's
important or anything, but it's pretty good brain candy for a Friday
morning. Also, another incidental thing I realized while driving around on
my Tones kick... I was listening to "Are You Blue Or Are You Blind" and
noticed just how much their drummer sounds like an early Jon Brookes on that
track.... anyone else caught that?

Dear Shane

I can see you don't listen to much pre-madchester music.
The Stone Roses and The Charlatans were unfairly compared
in the late 80's, The two bands having common roots in '60s
R&B and Soul (on the bass side), but there the similarities
ended (apart from the fact that neither Brown nor Burgess
could exactly sing).
The Roses sounded more like Jimi Hendrix and other guitar
orientated bands, but the Charlatans, with their instantly
recognisable Hammond (C3?) sound and naive guitar work on
Indian Rope and the early demos had more in common with
Deep Purple (The opening organ chords of 'Then' are exactly
the same as 'Hush') who in turn took more of a Detroit
Funk feel than many contemporaries. Most of the bands of
the Roses and Charlatans ilk have fallen by the wayside in
the 90s, but I hope The Charlatans (Band of The Decade in my
own opinion) will not let Rob's sad demise stop them from
achieving the acclaim and success I think Oasis stole from
under their noses.

I know Rob's death was a tragedy, but his playing style was,
fortunately, very simple on most tracks. I can think of one

Greetings,

I'd like to add my vote for the Inspiral's organist, even though he must be
getting on in years by now, to join the Charlatans. I mean, the roadies have
already made it big -- why not someone from the band! He can play, that's
for sure, but I also agree that the band have put out CRAP since Revenge of
the Goldfish (well, the How It Should Be single was cool, but that
Saturn-freakin-5 album is major league dung). Revenge... is an excellent
alternative-indie-pop album -- I've had it on the CD changer non-stop for the
past few weeks -- great sing-along while you drive stuff! Speaking of
driving, I actually drove the four hour's round trip from Paris to Lille one
night to see the Inspirals at the Aero-something on the Revenge... "Tour de
France" (but then again, I once drove the x hour's roundtrip from Edinburgh
to Newcastle to see OMD at the town hall -- hey, I was desparate for live(?)
music!)

Anyway, Rob's music will live on forever on the CD player, may he rest in
peace...

Regards,
Dave

Wow - I've seen lots of these desert isle thingers, but never one that

that's it, though the Eggman thing might change - I just picked it up and am
