The nazis wanted to terminate people. I said I wanted to 'terminate' racism and

Terminating an ideology isn't quite the same as terminating people.

Point taken. But I still don't agree with snuffing out any ideology. In fact, I
feel people should be informed of their ideology, so we can point out how stupid
it is. Skinheads, however bad they are, will always exist.

I don't know what you mean by the full extent of the law, but I'm more concerned
about what makes people think like the nazis. It is often unknowledge and
insecurity.

Depends on the law of the land. If skinheads, let's say, lynch a black
man/woman, they should be punished (e.g. execution, life imprisonment), and this
depends on where you live. But you say you want to stop these people before they
agitate anyone. How do you go about doing this without violating civil rights?
Will the "secret police" keep tabs on suspected neonazis? There was just such an
incident that happened in Montana, where "suspected" white supremists had
alledgedly stocked weapons, the FBI went in and killed the son, wife and dog of
a man who was a white supremist, but had done nothing legally wrong. They were
not harassing minorities, in fact, they lived in a secluded area, and basically
wanted to be left alone. Here is a case where the person had an ideology that
was wacky, but he wasn't commiting any crimes. People have the right to think
anyway they want, even if it offends a majority of the populace....
I don't want these people to aggetate eachother until some of them start to
violate
other people. I want to stop it before that point, before people get hurt by it
and
before these neonazis become real criminal. And I mean protesting against their
idea is a step.

Sorry to offend you again. I hate offending people, especially Charlatans fans.
But by
my means of 'apathetic', it means taking no action. I understand that you are
anti-racist
and that you have taken a stand. I just can't understand why you don't want to
fight more
against this, if you've seen so much yourself. I'm not fighting against people,
and I don't
want to hurt anyone, especially not physicly, I'm trying to fight against a
terrible ideology.

I do fight it, as an individual. I used to work with a racist, but instead of
fighting him, I tried to have intellectual arguments explaining why I felt
racism against any color of skin is wrong. I feel that this had much more of a
effect than getting "angry" at him. I do understand where you are coming from
however. You have strong beliefs, which is a good thing, and you should fight
hard for whatever you believe in, within the framework of basic civil
liberties. Just so you know, I don't consider this fighting at all. We actually
are having a very healthy discussion of a very important topic and you make
very good points....

Like I've said before, I hate the ideology, but I don't hate the people. I'm
very sad to see

I think I may be in the minority here, but I really like "Patrol" on
Up To Our Hips. I don't see alot of people talking that song up. I
definitely think all of their albums rock. Patrol is my favourite.

Hi All!
Now it has become a bit hectic here. I've been sending things I thought I was
sending to a private person to the list, which is a bit embarrising, me
running the list and all.
I just like to say to you Jim, that it seems like we pretty much agree on
most issues, if I understand you right. I don't want to violate the civil
rights. I am also against execution. When I want to 'fight' the nazi ideology,
I too want to fight it with words, and that's what I've tried to tell you.
There is no point in fighting people physicly, especially when it's not the
people but THE IDEOLOGY I want to fight. I just meant voting no to that list
was a non-violant and peacful step trying to stop people thinking that way
and agetate eachother to violence.
And, I actually like Patrol a lot. My girlfriend doesn't listen so much to
The Charlatans but somehow she's got all their records (don't ask me how:)
and she thinks Patrol is the best grooving song of them all.

Just to add in my opinion about all of this freedom of speech talk I feel
that anything can go too extreme, Including freedom of speech.
Perhaps this is just my silly Canadian point of view, but sometimes one
person's freedom can inhibit another's.
For example, when discussing the recent gun control bill here in Canada I
remember a CBC reporter discussing the issue with a Reform MP. The MP says
that gun control goes against basic freedom (and some people accuse the
Refrom party of being overyanked ;] )
The reporter made a good point that freedom to walk on the streets of urban
Canada anytime is a more basic fundamental right.
See my point? The right for Neo-Nazis' freedom of speech can impose on a
great number of people's basic human right of living without oppression due
to race, colour, creed, religion, etc. This is a right protected by our
Charter of Rights and Freedoms, freedom of speech is not.
Now I'm not advocating some kind of totalitarian society, far from it. It's
just that freedom is a far more complex issue than just divying out rights.
Anyway, that's just a Canuck point of view, I guess, what do youse in other
countries have to say?

This actually sounds like a really good idea Kari.
Personally, I think that Sproston Green is absolutely the best song ever
recorded anywhere by anyone.

I would have to say that my five favorite songs, not necessarily
in any order are:
1. The Smiths-"There is a Light and it Never Goes Out"
2. The Smashing Pumpkins-"Disarm"
3. The Smiths-"Still Ill"
4. Morrissey-"Every Day is Like Sunday"
5. U2-"Pride (In the Name of Love)"
This list varies with me. Sometimes other Smiths songs will creep up into
my top 5, but these are probably the songs that have raised the most
passionate emotions within me over the last few years. I'm sorry that no
Charlatans songs are up there, but I don't consider them to be a "Top 5
favorites" kind of group. Their tunes are cool to groove to, and the
rythms are superb, but they don't evoke any strong emotions in me. I
enjoy listening to them and would definitely see them in concert, which
is why I joined this mailing list.
Also, I'd like to put in my two-cents worth with regards to the White
Supremacy Newsgroup that is in the works. Free Speech is definitely of
the highest importance, and censorship sucks. However, when a forum for
hate can be put over the public airwaves, that is a bit much. This is the
information superhighway here! If this is allowed, where will it end?
What if every creed of hatred put up newsgroups, and every group knew
that they could use the Internet to advertise their hatred? Recreational
Newsgroup readers who just want to have some fun and learn some cool
stuff would be subjected to such crap. Although some may claim that you
shouldn't dial it up if you don't want to see it, I still would feel a
bit of distaste in my palate just knowing that the bullshit was on there
and could be accessed easily by millions. The moral: Stop the hate. Bring
the love. Eat your spaghetti.

18th, and they're second on the bill to Paul Weller. It's all part of some
Virgin '96 thing, and I think the Lightening Seeds and Shed Seven are also

Actually Jen the Charlies have two other albums, their most recent is simply
titled The Charlatans. Not a bad piece of work. The other is in my opinion
their very best and is called Between 10th and 11th (or as I affectionately
call it, the banana album).
And just for interest sake, my favourite song is "Sproston Green". Yeah I
know, overplayed, but it's the best song I've ever heard by anyone!

Actullay dave I had the good fortune to meet and talk with Tim (the singer)
at a show in Columbia MO. The turn out was slim and the attending crowd had
no idea that the englishmen in front of the were the second best band from
england (next to verve and possibly the chem bros, or the cocteau twins,
love and rockets\bauhaus....but Im getting off on a rant. The point was Tim
said that he got the bananna idea from the velvet underground and Andy
(Worhol not weatherall sheesh some englishmen have no idea of american
art....yeah right...) so calling it the bannana album is not so strange.

Welcome to the list!
Here are some answers to your questions;
1) You're right "The Only One I Know" is amazing!
2) The charlie's latest album is actually called "The Charlatans". Beggar's
Banquet is their record label, made famous by the Rolling Stones.
3) The band has four albums, "Some Friendly" (1991), "Between 10th & 11th" (92),
"Up To Our Hips" (1994), and "The Charlatans" (1995). As far as I can tell,
you're only missing the band's second album, which is fantastic, but a little
different from their other stuff (it was produced by Flood, which is one
reason why it is so different).
4) The band has also released more than a dozen singles. Two of them did not
appear on any of the albums; "Indian Rope" (their first single), "Over
"Rising" & "Me In Time". Ooops, that's three.

david, excellent taste in a favourtite album. i thought i was the only

I do posses the GREAT Jesus hairdo -(CD)single and it contains :

2. stir it up
3. patrol -the dust brothers mix
4. feel flows -van basten mix
The single is absolutely worth purchasing. Stir it up and patrol remix are
my favourites.
In the original message someone asked about the dust/chemical brothers
remixes/co-productions. One great peace can be found from the Help -album,
Time for livin'. I bought Help because of that song, that should tell
something about the song.

it's terrible living in dallas texas because they didn't come through here.
i saw the between 10th and 11th tour and up to our hips tour and was just
completely blown away. need i say more than bass, lots of it, organ and drum
groooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove. i still have the sounds up in my scull.
i should have seen the some friendly show here but was a bit too young at
the time to get into 18 and over clubs. such a shame cause from what i
understand they had a guy who did light shows back in the late sixties from
san francisco who dropped incredible gell designs behind the band. sproston
green is good i will say, but for me it might just have to be chewing gum
weekend. deep down i love them all equally but that's the jam for me right
now, although it will change.

I have also givin that disc some spinnin but I would argue that the best cut
is portisheads "morning air" an increadiblely moving piece of work that
brings a tear to this Pisces' eye. But I'm a Dummy like that....

I think that buy making music a dicotomy you fail to realize the importance
of our beloved charlie's. The whole concept behind the charletans, ride and
the roses is the idea that house and the charlies are separate shows you
lack of depth. Listen to feel flows (Jesus hairdo) it screams HOUSE of the
deepest persuation. Is it coincidence that it was the opening song for the
live show? I'm talkin off the wax, it brought the crowd up to the level they
wanted and then they were there.....AHHHH.... but does that detract from the
hundereds of times I have sunk to a bass heavy groove in some warehouse in
god knows where? No. I would no sooner give one for the other. To limit
yourself to only indie or only white lable is to reduce your potential for
enlightenment....

Dear Mr Winton -(yes I'm sure that's your real name)
you wouldn't know good music if it jumped up and hit you. i went to
shitty dance clubs and raves for three years and i didn't find any r&r,
just a bunch of beered up or drugged up posers who think they're God's
gift.
