Greetings Shoegazers...! :-] Sorry for my errancy in keeping everyone posted about this compilation, I have been extremely busy. Anyways, we have a big problem - no on has sent me any tapes yet - I might have confused some people with my last posting when I mentioned that we "tracked down" most of the material - I actually didn't imply that I recieved the tapes, just that I had located those that had them - anyways - those mailing me tapes, please e-mail me a list of what you have again so that I can re-compile my own master list. Let it be known that anyone contributing to the comp will get a free one at my expense - just pay for the Maxell Type II tape and the cost of shipping to my address - I would have to suggest haste in this matter because the window of free time that I currently have to devote to this project is rapidly diminishing - again - please -email me if you have tapes so that we can arrange a gathering of these recorded treasures. By the way, I will give out a new address so that I can be sure that this gets done sooner than later - if you have tapes, e-mail me and I will e-mail this new address privately to you - hopefully we can pull this impossible task off - but I'll need everyone's help to do it...thanks again to everyone for their patience - I have just been swamped lately... Sincerely, Sillabyss (ie: Mark, etc) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Aug 1998 01:00:28 +0200 From: Jorge Palomar Subject: Envidia! Hi: I've just come from the FIB festival in Spain and there's a couple of things you do need to know: 1.- I saw Kevin Shields playing four songs with Primal Scream. 2.- I Interviewed our Neil!!!!!!!!!!! -Bernard Butler played there as well- More info soon. Gotta go Love Jorge ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Aug 1998 17:16:03 +1000 (EST) From: athomas@postoffice.utas.edu.au (Alister Thomas) Subject: Re: Australian Bands Glad to know that there's another sentient being in the universe who knows about Swirl!!!! What's the "Touch" CD, then??? I've never heard of it!!! All I was aware that they'd ever released was their album called "The last unicorn" and the EP from that album also called "The last unicorn". As far as Australian shoegazing bands go, they're about the only one I'm aware of. There isn't much of a shoegazing scene here at all. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, the only other Australian band that delved into "shoegazing" territory was the Underground Lovers when they went through a phase around about 1991-92 where they sounded remarkably like My Bloody Valentine. In fact, when the Cure toured Australia in 1992 (the "Wish" tour), Robert Smith asked them to support the band at all their Australian venues which, I suspect, had something to do with the fact that he was listening to MBV a lot at that time. Underground Lovers have since become a fairly unremarkable indie-pop band... But, yeah, the Oz music scene is a load of rubbish, for the most part. All we have to offer to the rest of the world, musically, is just boring pub-rock in the vein of Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel, Tumbleweed, or... or.... I dunno!!! It's all really quite boring here - bands NEVER do anything different. We just haven't got the population to support anything that sounds 'different' - people just aren't interested. I wouldn't hold your breath looking around for any decent Oz 'shoegazing' type bands (or otherwise)... there just isn't anything here. The only money to be made for musicians here is for cover bands at nightclubs doing music to keep the crowds happy... sad but true... What's the "Touch" CD, then??? I've never heard of it!!! >All I was aware that they'd ever released was their album called "The last >unicorn" and the EP from that album also called "The last unicorn". I'm a big fan of Swirl, and don't know what's happened to them since "the last unicorn" album - the only ep I know of is the "on my own" ep...but yes, they are one of our only shoegazing bands that are relatively known... There are other bands if you look harder though that have dabbled in shoegazing, and added their own sound to it, unlike a lot of English bands that just reinvented the MBV sound. Bands like The Wash, Crow, Drop City, Sidewinder, the Clouds have all taken elements of the shoegazing sound and mutated it...the Church is an example of longevity in doing this... >But, yeah, the Oz music scene is a load of rubbish, for the most part. True, people aren't interested, and the small population doesn't help, but it's there if you look hard enough... >I wouldn't hold your breath looking around for any decent Oz 'shoegazing' >type bands (or otherwise)... there just isn't anything here. Subject: Australian Bands The "Touch" CD, as the liner notes say, is a compilation of the "Touch" and "Aurora" EP's. Question: is "The Last Unicorn" as good as their early recordings? Is it domestically available in the U.S. as well of other australian shoegazing bands? I spoke to Ben the last time they toured here (Jan 1997) and he said they were starting a new record to be released in August (1997). Since then, nothing on the album, and no gigs.
