Indeed, we didn't know that an audio clip was put on the net. It is probably a fragment of the last live gig we played as Fading For Amanda. Fading For Amanda does not exist any more, but as the title mentions it, we're now called Sleeve. Two reasons why we changed: first we hated the name (it sounded somewhat new-wavy and we're , second, we also changed our music style. Our objective now is to combine Slowdive, Cocteau Twins and MBV guitars with some trip hop drums and sounds. We fired our drummer and a new guy (DJ Buzz) joined the band. Last thursday we heard the first sound clips he made for us, and to be honest, we all were impressed. He was the guy we really needed, the person who gave our sound a more modern "look". For the moment, we are finishing some new songs... From the moment that there are demos, I'll let you know. We had contacts with Alex Callier (about 9 months ago), the guy behind Hooverphonic and he also was going to produce some songs, but we decided to wait because there were only 2 songs we really liked. Anyway, we' ll contact him again when the new songs are finished. Hope he still wants to produce some of our stuff. For the ones who are interested: our bass player is also on the net. Here is his address: rudy.cocquyt@lmb001.rug.ac.be Bye, and thanx for the support !!! Hey Catchbreeze...- if that is your real name :) > my friend sean and i are putting a project together > called Sorry 'Bout Your Girlfriend > and trippy noise band > using household pots and pans for drums > my guitar and pedals, two turntables > and a cheap casio keyboard > all of it will be recorded onto a * track and hand looped > (as soon as we get an 8 track) I always love to hear projects like this - done on a shoetsring with the whole group of people just going for it - always remember, its never, ever the gear or the instruments that you use (despit popular opinion) it is always the ideas that are proliferated and captured onto tape that matters. The Velvet Underground's drummer (Moe Tucker) used pots and pans initially cause she couldn't afford a drum kit. On that legnedary album "The Velvet Underground and Nico" (The one with the Banana on the cover) she was only using a single kick drum and a splash cymbol - thats it. Pretty sparse when you think about it, but listen to the drums on tracks like Heroin or Venus in Furs - blows my socks off...!!! Just a little encouragement...:) Sincerely, Sillabyss.... P.S. - try getting an old tape recorder and experimenting with tape speeds and such - these types of devices open up your processing abilities tenfold...just mess around with the motors and such, use dead batteries, scratch the hell out of the playback heads, etc, etc, etc,,,all fun... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jul 1998 09:42:55 -0400 From: "Mark Stancombe" Subject: Re: Disposition of Slowdive Fans > > and though I am this type and quite enjoy the > > music (oh, the rapture and bliss in the sadness and depth within the > > music... Absolutely - I find a certain comfort in kowning that other people experience similar or even worse traumas than my own - they help one to understand and move past the hardest obstacle in overcomming grief and longing - the feeling that one is not alone...isolation and loneliness can be the most debiltating of human emotions...to know that someone is suffering along with you can be alleviating, comforting and extremely therapeutic...many say that divulging in this manner only worsens the mood, but in reality, by avoiding it altogether, are you really dealing with that side of your personality, or simply resorting to escapism...embrace anything that alleviates your pain...period... There my two or three or eight cents worth...:) Sincerly, Sillabyss (ie: Mark Stancombe) P.S. - I don't think its because were moody and depressing, so much as we're realists and capable of understanding and appreciating beauty that comes from genuine human sincerity...thats probably a better definition of a type #4...theres another cent or two...:] ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jul 1998 09:00:44 -0500 (EST) From: bLenDER Subject: Re: Disposition of Slowdive Fans > > I wanted to briefly poll the group on a question I had regarding the > > disposition of Slowdive fans. I embrace all my emotions, be it a down type, or an up type. I'm a romantic type, definitely, and I'm the emotional type, but at the same time, I've never been excessively unhappy. The music of Slowdive actually lifts me, the sonic-ness of it brings me up and into brighter light, if I may use a new age sounding analogy. It has brought me down, if I'm already in a low mood. Actually, Slowdive seems to amplify whatever mood I'm in, and since I'm generally happy, it generally makes me more happy... but it puts most of my friends to sleep... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Jul 98 12:21:52 CST From: Crios@dminet.davidson-marketing.com Subject: Re: Disposition of Slowdive Fans Oh I don't know... I guess I would call myself a Tragic/Romantic... but that's not me to a tee... there's lots of different facets to my (as well as other peoples I'm sure) personality... I do indulge in deep blue funks every now and then... it's kinda nice every now and then... I don't know what people that listen to Slowdive are like cause I've never really met any... (except for the people on this list but I've never REALLY met any of you) and anyway not all of Slowdive's music depresses me... Blue skied an Clear makes me tremendously happy as well as Melon yellow and Some velvet Morning... and Primal... well that one makes me kinda aggressive, gets the andrenaline flowwing... It depends on the way you view it, you know... I suppose a certain type of person would be attracted to this type of music... but hey... listen to what you like, not just cause it might fit some type of designated stereo type... Does anybody listen to Miranda Sex Garden... what ever happened > to them??? (Stepping out of lurk mode !) Excellent question, which I hope someone can answer. There is a group in the UK at the moment called The Medieval Babes (they played at Glastonbury this year) who I keep wondering if they are Miranda Sex Garden under a new name and with new members. Anyone know ? I recall seeing Miranda Sex Garden at the University of London Union in, I think 1990 or 1991, supporting Curve who had just released their Frozen EP. What a shame that Curve have abandoned their old sound and gone essentially techno (from what I've heard). They were such a great band and now they've changed out of all recognition. I guess Garbage have taken the old Curve sound and turned it into a huge sucess, but I digress ! > oh yeah... I'd like to do a little poll of my own... what are the top ten > music > you've been listening to lately? Just curious... Here's mine I don't know about a top 10, but right now I'm listening to a lot of Garth Brooks, Christopher Cross (he has an excellent new album out), Brian Wilson and Dar Williams and lots of other stuff. I tried to get a copy of the Mojave3 single on Saturday but couldn't find a single copy in either HMV, Virgin or Tower Records in London !! It seems like I'll have to mail order it, which seems preposterous since they are a UK band ! In all honesty I didn't like the first Mojave3 album at all, way too downbeat for my liking. Slowdive's music was (and is) just so achingly beautiful that I will always follow Neil Halstead's endeavours. I've always wanted to say this but have never had the chance : for those of you who have seen the Morningrise video, isn't it just the most perfect match of music and visuals ? I think so ! ---------------------- Regards Vince Deehan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jul 1998 13:37:41 EDT From: M242557sm@aol.com Subject: Re: Disposition of Slowdive Fans well, the top ten ive been listening to lately.. 1) mogwai 2) codiene 3) shellac 4) june of 44 5) fugazi 6) modestmouse 7) trembling blue stars 8) rollerskate skinny 9) slint 10) bedhead hahahahaha.. i know, im a dork. shane. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jul 1998 14:39:53 -0400 (EDT) From: Lorraine Lelis Subject: Re: Disposition of Slowdive Fans i don't know if i would call myself "tragic," but "romantic" is definitely true. funny how someone said "melon yellow" makes them feel happy- but for me, that song is so melancholy and romantic that when i was listening to it once, i realized that i was in love with a friend of mine who also happened to be a slowdive romantic. i think slowdive music attracts people who find beauty in melancholy, but not necessarily people who are depressed and tragic. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jul 1998 11:31:00 -0700 (PDT) From: Gage Crump Subject: Re: Disposition of Slowdive Fans in reply to the listening music right now here's ten: 1) windy&carl 2) stars of the lid 3) trembling blue stars 4) massive attack 5) charles mingus 6) bowery electric 7) low 8) third eye foundation 9) sun ra 10) stone roses -gage ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Jul 1998 13:17:07 -0500 From: erik Subject: Re: Disposition of Slowdive Fans > ... but hey... listen to what you like, not just > cause it might fit some type of designated stereo type... Most people would listen to it and think it's depressing, down music, but most beautiful music is inspired by sadness and by letting it out, something comes out that can only come from one of our most powerful emotions. > oh yeah... I'm new to the list. I've got a handful of old Slowdive stuff that I drag out from time to time, but frankly I more often pull out the Mojave 3 album as the stripped clean sound seems to do more for me these days. So, I joined up to have a listen to what you folks talk about and see what I could glean about the new release. Other than that I suppose I could let you know I'm a 29 y.o. male from Chicago, hmmm, lotsa cats, not subject to many tragic situations odr particularly depressed, though musically I guess you could say I tend towards the darker side at times.
