Not daring to create a list of the bands I'll just refer to someone pointing out that the term "shoegazing" comes from musicians being too caught by the sight of their guitar pedals to look at the audience... "Dreampop" is quite an obscure term for me and is also a bit negative for the "pop" in it. Btw, "showgaze", which I guess was I typo, could also have its meaning... quite a negative one, I guess ;) Siim At 13:54 16.06.98 -0600, Mark wrote: > I am new to the list and new to the terms "dreampop" and "showgaze". > The few bands that I have seen placed in this category I quite enjoy and > I was wondering if anyone could provide me with a list of other bands in > this category. Hey Welcome Aboard Mark! I just joined here recently too. Here is a list of bands that I feel seem to fall within this category of shoegazing dreampop star-music - whatever you want to call it - I just call it beautiful. Here is a list of what I consider to be logical extensions of Slowdive and the like: - My Bloody Velentine (Albums: Loveless, Isn't Anything) - Ride (Albums: Nowhere, Going Blank Again, Smile) - Swervedriver (Albums: Raise, Mezcalhead, Ejector Seat Reservation) - Adorable (Albums: Against Perfection) - Spiritualized (Albums: Lazer Guided Melodies, Pure Phase, Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space) - Sianspheric (Indie; Albums: Somnium) - Sully (Albums: ?????) - Mojave 3 (Albums: Ask Me Tommorrow) - This Mortal Coil (Albums:??????) - Slowdive (Albums: Blueday EP, Slowdive EP, Just For A Day, Souvlaki, Pygmalion) - Brian Eno (Albums: Music For Airports, Music For Films, Apollo, etc, etc, etc...) - there is an instrumental box set that spans most of the important stuff - Galaxy 500 (Albums: This Is Our Music, On Fire, Today - there is a box set put out by Rykodisc that includes all three albums plus a CD of uncollected rarities) - Spacemen 3 (Albums: The Singles, various live albums, probably abour 40 or 50 in number) - The Jesus And Marychain (Albums: Pyschocandy, Barbed Wire Kisses) - U2 (Albums: The Unforgettable Fire) - James (Albums: Wah Wah) - Experimental Audio Research (E.A.R.) (Albums: Beyond The Pale, anything really - their all pretty much the same - drones, feedback, ambiently mixed) The above list will probably spark alot of debate. I just chose these records because all of this dreampop / ambient scene was initially derrived by a few initial sources. Those being Brian Eno (Ambient Music) and The Jesus And MaryChain (Pop Noise Music). From these two sources, especially the latter, came My Bloody Valentine, who with the release of the album "Loveless" influenced most of the bands listed above (ie: adorable, Slowdive, Ride, Swervedriver, etc). (I am sure bands like Sonic Youth, etc, have their part as well). Galaxy 500 kind of came out of nowhere. James And U2 were produced by Brian Eno, sporting a very ambient sound on the two releases mentioned. Spiritualized emnated from Spacemen 3 comprising of Sonic Boom (who later went to for E.A.R.) and Jason "Spaceman" Pierce who went on to form Spiritualized. Anyways there you have it, like I said, this list will probably generate some furious remarks but it is only one man's view. There are of course others, but they are probably either completely unlistenable, unattainable for purchase, or too similar to the above mentioned artists. Hope this helps! Although I was hearing choir kids singing to bells, and I thought of slowdive, and it was really beautiful. Okay here comes some cheese: I was reminded how they made me appreciate the beauty of music, how I've just lived day to day listening to them and letting them speak for me. In my opinion 40 days is just a song for everyday...It's almost like a daily soundtrack. Anyways, I was very appreciative that they have always been there and making my life and musical experiences enjoyable. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 13:54:15 -0400 From: "Mark Stancombe" Subject: Endlessly Shiny... > In my opinion 40 days is just a song for everyday...It's almost like a > daily soundtrack. . I can listen to "Shine" endlessly. Once when I was doing some tape transfers I had it on for about 13 hours solid - something about Slowdive just makes you appreciate what it is in life that you have, and forget about the things that you don't. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 13:10:07 -0500 (EST) From: bLenDER Subject: Re: Endlessly Shiny... > I can listen to "Shine" endlessly. I put that on a comp tape just two days ago I remember when I got my copy of holding our breath, I put it on and that soong playedm, and I just was ASTONISHED. One of their best songs... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 13:52:47 +0000 From: "wade@tapehouse.com" Subject: Re: Endlessly Shiny... Once I was really, really, stoned and riding the subway in New York city, and Shine was blasting in my headphones... Total Euphoria!! Anyways, I was next to the drivers compartment dazzed by the blurs outside and watching the electronic speedometer move at incredible speeds very slowly. Needless to say, I was in my own world with my headphones on. wade ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 19:56:13 EDT From: Catchbreez@aol.com Subject: Re: magical slowie experience anyone have the lryics in txt form for all the slowdive songs they used to be on a page and i would like them ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 17:33:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Gage Crump Subject: Re: Endlessly Shiny... sister sue "i'm blinded ... it's only my eyes" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 22:03:15 -0400 From: "Gordon Brown" Subject: Belle & Sebastian video needed... Hi, I'm posting this to the list in hopes that someone out there has this material. Any video material at all of Belle & Sebastian is desperately needed. Very generous return trade offers (example: 6 hour Slowdive video for anyone who can supply a tape of all the promo vids and some TV appearances) Thanks for your time. Gordon PS To all those who ordered videos, packages will be sent out next week. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jun 98 13:42:11 CST From: Crios@dminet.davidson-marketing.com Subject: Re[2]: magical slowie experience I like cheese... > Mike, > that is weird, because I too just did that Friday night and had a > beautiful, touching experience. For me it was always melon yellow and velvet morning... Sometimes I get up really early and go down by the lake (chicago, michigan) put on the head phones and watch the sun rise... It just doesn't get much better than that... This is kinda wierd but I make a mix tape of Slowdive and Miles Davis especially for that... For me the two work really well.... Crios ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 14:49:57 -0400 From: "Cox, Jonathan Campbell" Subject: Re: Endlessly Shiny... That's ironic because I have always considered Slowdive's music very effective at making you remember things you don't have or once had withour regard to what you do have. I consider them the musical embodiment of John Keats' poetry (especially Just for a Day). I mean, "She told me that she loved me, Love just for a day, and every time I feel her, I feel her fade away" from Celia's dream is to me nothing more than a modern version of "La Belle Dame sans Mercy." And there is Brighter, whose lyrics embody this sort of selfless sacrifice despite one's own feelings that is very respectable, but very depressing at the same time. On top of that, all of their music makes me feel the same, so I know it's not just the words. Erk's Song, for example. But despite these different interps, I have to agree that Shine is by far one of their most amazing songs, and I too often liten to it over and over. Hey, wow!!! I didn't have any idea that this CD was still in print!!!! I would have thought that it'd be waaaaay out of print by now!!! Good score! (even if it did have "Raise" on it!). > I assume you are aware that some pressings of the first Slowdive cdep, > Slowdive, came out as Swervedriver's Raise. That is, the cover of the CD > and the CD itself is labeled as the Slowdive ep, but when you play the CD, > it is Raise Yeah, I know a couple of people who were in the UK at the time the EP was released and they both picked it up at the same record shop on the same day and both their copies were actually "Raise" rather than Slowdive... weird, huh??? > So my question is, seeing that I am not a big Swervedriver > fan, does this mispressing have any value to Swervedriver fans, or is my > best bet to just return it and get credit for what I paid for it? I haven't got a clue as to it's value but I know that there were a few of those misprints around - I guess it's the same story with niche market CD's - they're really only worth what people are willing to pay for them, I guess. Would be cool to have if you're a Swervedriver completist, though :-) On the topic of Creation records misprints, a couple of years ago I ordered in The Times CD "Et Dieu Crea La Femme" and when I put it in the CD player and it was only about 15 minutes long with 3 tracks - pretty weird, I though, considering it's a full-length ablum with around 12 tracks (off the top of my head). So I played it and it was a Primal Scream single "Jailbird" (or one the other singles from that album - can't quite rememeber!), so I sent it back and re-ordered the Times CD and it turned up. Turns out the Times CD wasn't really worth waiting for - it isn't that good, really. Does anyone else know of any Creation records misprints like this?!??! Thought I'd mention that...
