Their first self-titled album > on kranky (1995) is absolutely wonderful. it has watery slowdive-esque > guitars, my bloody valentine-y coed vocals and exceptionally powerful > drums 'n bass. It is one of the best shoegaze albums in recent years. i agree that it's a shoegazing essential, but that album does not have any d'n'b tracks on it, and neither does _beat_. what the s/t album does have is live drums influenced by hip-hop riddims. beat is more minimal, varied, and mature than the first album. it also sees the integration of sampled beat loops into their sound. vertigo, the remixes 2cd (the first cd is only 15 minutes long, for some stupid reason -- they should have included the disjecta mix if they wanted to do 2 cds), is pretty good. > and a recent 12" on happy go lucky records called "electric > sleep"/"blow up" which is real good drums'n bass. it's a good 12", and it shows a nice change in direction. but god, they have to work on their sequencing. you can't just loop 2 bars for the whole song! :) that all said, bowery electric is probably my favorite currently active band by far. i rip them off in more ways than one. ;) oh, i don't think anyone has mentioned the _drop_ ep, which came out before the first album proper. it's really heavy (and samey) stuff, in the vein of loop (as in _a guilded eternity_). pretty good, but not essential. the two full-lengths are quite essential, though. ; e.e. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 May 1998 23:38:30 +0200 From: palomar@mail.sendanet.es Subject: Re: Grimble Grumble> >>> I have a fanzine called "100.000 Luciernagas" (sorry, only in Spanish!). >>> In issue no1 there are interviews with Windy & Carl, The Azusa Plane, >>> Labradford, Damon & Naomi among many, many others (90 pages!) >>> I hope to interview Grimble Grumble in issue nš2. >> >> Here's one who's interested - please send it along if you can! >> Thanks! > > Well, I don't know any spanish... you were offering to post the > english version of the Grimble Grumble interview, which was what > I was replying to. ;) I was offering to send the Grimble Grumble interview I'm going to do, but it's not even made yet! ;o) I will e-mail you when they answer, OK? Thanks! (Can't wait to get my hands on their records! It shouldn't be more than a week now.) I did receive the Colfax Abbey album "Drop" today, but I've been too busy to manage to listen to it yet, so that will have to wait 'til tomorrow. :-/ //Erik ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 May 1998 18:27:03 -0400 From: "Cox, Jonathan Campbell" Subject: Re: Labradford I have never heard any of Labradford's music, but I do know that they are based out of Richmond, VA (my original hometown) and that one of the guys used to work at the best record store there (I saw a picture of them in AP once, and I think one of them worked there based on looks). Just had to give some props. I mean what have RIchmond had since GWAR? JC ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 May 1998 19:27:58 -0400 From: "Cox, Jonathan Campbell" Subject: Beach Song, Take Me Down I was wondering about the validity of the listing in the Slowdive discography at http://www.musicstack.com/slowdive/discog.html#comp where it lists Sarah Compilation (????) - Beach Song, Take Me Down, Love Me. I know on Erik's discog. it lists a Sarah Comp with Eternal songs on it and does not mention this one. Was it left out or is it a mistake? Are Beach Song and Take Me Down only available on the flexi 7" or are they available on CD anywhere? thanks JC ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 May 1998 01:48:40 +0200 From: Erik Soderstrom Subject: Re: Beach Song, Take Me Down At 19:27 1998-05-06 -0400, you wrote: > I was wondering about the validity of the listing in the Slowdive > discography at : http://www.musicstack.com/slowdive/discog.html#comp > where it lists > > Sarah Compilation (????) - Beach Song, Take Me Down, Love Me. > > I know on Erik's discog. it lists a Sarah Comp with Eternal songs on it and > does not mention this one. Was it left out or is it a mistake? Are Beach > Song and Take Me Down only available on the flexi 7" or are they available > on CD anywhere? Aren't those songs the ones on the infamous "Creation Demo" made in 1990? I have a copy of it, but I just don't remember which songs were on it. I'll check though. Or if someone else has an answer (which would mean I wouldn't have to tear down half the closet ;))? Okay, I'm back. :) Yes, it sure was the songs on the Creation demo, which was made out of tracks recorded for the Slowdive EP (at least "Slowdive" and "Avalyn") - but McGee didn't want to release these songs because "they sounded too much like MBV". Or so they say. There is no Sarah compilation with these songs though. //Erik ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 May 1998 01:52:29 +0200 From: Erik Soderstrom Subject: Re: Grimble Grumble> At 08:47 1998-05-06 +0000, you wrote: > ERik, > where did you find the cd grimble grumble? From them? No I just searched the net for their name and various formats which resulted in several links. Try AltaVista with parameters: +"Grimble Grumble" +10 +7 +LP +CD and you should find several mailorders with it in their catalogs. The linear notes make it seem as though the album is going to have 5 tracks, but, it only has two (of course, they're both very long). Is this right? Does anyone know? Is my cd screwed up or something? Just wondering. Thanks, richard PS - the two tracks are both very, very good! The vocals are drowned out almost completely at times and are basically uncomprehendable. The music is pretty slow and the guitars have alot of effects on them. I`ve only heard them a few times cause my friend has their forst two cd`s which I`ve been meaning to copy so I`d recomend giving them a chance. Their first two records are on Kranky and I believe they have a new one on Elektra which I havent heard. I forgot excatly what Labradford is like. I`ve heard they their records vary in sound so it`s hard to say but from what I can remember they are pretty dreamy and use alot of little electronic sounds. I think. hope that helps Craig ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 May 1998 09:41:25 -0700 From: Richard Henson Subject: Re: Grimble Grumble> I appreciate the list members who took the time to explain to me what was going on with my Grimble Grumble CD, i'm sure the question seemed pretty studid (but hey, i've gotten plenty of mispressed cd's). Anyway, does anyone have the new Windy & Carl/ AMP split? I think it's limited to only a 1000, so if people want it, you should get it now ('cause it smokes - well not really, but you know what i mean). I just got an indie shipment in yesterday and i got a whole bunch of cool discs and i was just wondering if anyone had any info on any of the bands: 1) Mazinga Phaser - i think this is a band from Texas, the album's called abandinallhope and it's very, very (very) slowdivey (incredibly good cd; all of you should get it if you haven't already). 2) Mirza - this one's called anadromus and is part 7 of the bliss out series (also very good; gets pretty minimal at points, but always manages to pick up). 3) Salamander - i don't know anything about this one except that it's only got six songs and the last one is about 20 minutes long and doesn't really sound a whole lot like the rest of the tracks (which are kinda Spacemen3-y; the last one reminded me a little bit of Bark Psychosis "Scum" without vocals). Great, but not as great as the rest of these. That's about it i guess. Oh yeah, I've got Stars of the Lid "the ballasted orchestra," does the rest of their material sound like that one or is it different? Sorry for writing so much. Flying Saucer Attack is awesome! FSA was the first neo-shoegazer band (like bowery electric and labradford and all them) and are definately not to be missed. A good starting point (i think anyway) would be to get either "distance" or "chorus" and also maybe "new lands (the newest one)." Everything by them is great, but these especially! richard At 03:58 PM 5/7/98 +0100, you wrote: >dave > >ps: does any one have any information on a band called flying saucer >attack? >this is the last one- promise! if anyone wants to know about any cool >australian stuff then let me know... ------------------------------ End of Avalyn Digest Vol.98 #75 ********************************
