Good lord yes! I couldn't agree more! A funny story here - when my CDs were stolen, I also got Ecstacy and Wine stolen, and cried my sob story to carl of W&C who just happened to have an extra on LP, and when he was at my house, he saw my Moonshake First 12" and said "I'll trade you..." so needless to say I did...and luckily found another copy of First for 1.5 UK pounds!! Is this > pretty much typical of their sound? well, yes and no. i've found that each pale saints album has a sound all its own, but all distinctively 'pale saints' nonetheless (sorta like each mbv album sounds completely different, but still recognizable as mbv). hmmm. well, i've always liked _in ribbons_ (it was actually one of the first 'shoegaze' albums i heard), but for pale saints at their prime, i'd suggest either the aforementioned _comforts_ (only available on 4ad u.k release -- fluffy kitty on the cover), or the _mrs. dolphin_ compilation (japanese-only 4ad release -- though it's hard to find in the first place, and even more difficult for less than $30!). btw, if anyone has been looking for _comforts_, i've seen a few copies floating around here in recent months... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 09:33:57 -0500 (EST) From: bLenDER Subject: Re: recommendations > what is wrong with new age? > > >dreampop with out the pop > >but dream music sounds WAY too new age... Well, for example, I have Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works. Some of the music on that sounds very new age. So what is the difference between Ambient and New Age? Well, I'd say there's usually some sort of philosophy or spirituality behind most new age, whereas ambient is music for the sake of music, sound, etc. I personally find most New Age ideals kind of silly. Wait, I take that back. I find the people who translate the ideas into practice kind of silly, and if you call your music New Age, you will be associated in that group. I don't drink, smoke, do any drugs, or eat meat, yet I don't call myself straight edge (I'd rather be Ben than take on a group philosophy), and I make ambient music, but I don't call it new age. It's all a point of reference, I guess. smiles... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 07:54:02 PDT From: "Pearson Greer" Subject: pale saints In Ribbons is the only Pale Saints cd i own, i heard the one that didnt have Ian Masters and dont remember it making much of an impression on me. i like IR a lot, especially the first two songs and Hairshoes, but in comparison to those, the rest of the album is a bit of a let down but anyways... i asked this next question on the 4ad list and got no response (guess they'd gone deaf listening to the Paladins or something equally icky), so here goes- whats a good place to start with Dif Juz? i've only heard the song "no motion" off the Joyride soundtrack and i liked it a lot.what the heck does that name mean anyways? I really feel IN RIBBONS to be superior. If ya get the CD in the US, at least, you get the wonderful EP [name 's escaping me right now] as well which has their brilliant interpretation of "Blue Flower!" ok, i'm 'outie' --m ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 20:20:45 +0200 From: Erik Soderstrom Subject: Re: Question >> Can anyone tell me what moonshake, Ecstasy of St. theresea albums are >> good? > > ALL EOST stuff is amazing! well, not amazing but good. I disagree - the "Fluidtrance Centauri" (93) single is a masterpiece, but the AstralaVista e.p. (94) is far far away from good. I suppose it's because all songs are remixes (Disco Inferno, Twin Freaks - Simon Dine and Wubble-U, Bandulu and one by EoST themselves) as their own, in the original versions, are gorgeous. That is to say that the album "Free-D Original Soundtrack" is great. >_____________________________________________________________________________ > clai > * r > ! e P o p M a i l o r d e r > n * your for > o d key pop! > el*e > > http://gdn.net/~cdl > > *****PO Box 13299*****Gainesville, FL*****32604-1299*****USA***** > > (352)336-1227 >_____________________________________________________________________________ I have actually spent the day at work today writing a filter removing this extremely big .sig (which really could easily fit on one single line instead of 14...) - though it doesn't work on the mailing list directly - only on the Digests (which I format through a program I'm constantly adding "remove-items" to - hotmail / juno / freemail sigs for example.) So if you're looking for "clean" digests, just check the archive (http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/avalyn.html) I guess I could translate the java to perl or something and stick it in the procmail filters directly on the list, but I'll have to find the time for that and try it out on a test list first. Now don't take this personally Daniel but it is pretty big, especially on a mailing list. I'm all for big sigs in private mail, where it doesn't reach more than one person, but when the sig is bigger than the actual content of the message which reaches 300+ people, it's rather annoying. //Erik ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 14:26:19 EDT From: ALTONBARNS Subject: Re: Oslo--ending Slowdive/Eno The piece of music used to end the OSLO Slowdive show is: Brian Eno - An Ending (Ascent) 4:18 - from the album: Apollo EGCD53 Great ambient album! Fellow Pale Saints listeners?? In Ribbons was the first PS I heard as well, and like you, I rate it as their best - though I know most people who got to the Comforts of Madness first put their money on that one. It is pretty common isn't it? Spooky was the first Lush record I actually *bought* - I had heard songs from earlier records before that, but never got around buying any of them - so somehow I tend to go with Spooky whenever I feel a need for some Lush (even though I do have Scar, Mad Love etc.) Just For A Day was the first Slowdive record I bought, and... well, you know what I'm going to say. ;) //Erik ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 20:52:34 +0200 From: Erik Soderstrom Subject: Re: JAMC > Erik asked when Munki (the new JAMC album) will be out...June 1 in the UK > (Creation), June 2 in Germany (Creation/Epic/Sony Music), and June 9 in the > US (Subpop). Wade's friend isn't the only one to have an advance copy...they're everywhere. I haven't heard the whole album, though I've heard "I Love Rock N' Roll", and I'll be the first to tell you it rocks, great song. All the new stuff I've heard is great. Erik, is that promo you saw a one track promo, or does it have b-sides? Last I heard was that there were no plans to release "I Love Rock N' Roll" as a single, so I'm happy that they decided to. The more b-sides the better, especially with a band like the Mary Chain. --Matt ------------------------------ End of Avalyn Digest Vol.98 #61 ********************************
