To the Claire de Leon guy (you know the one... the guy with the biggest sig of the list, the guy who's perpetually plugging his mail order business...): Your recommendation was over the top, especially for this list. Some of the CD sounds like 5ep, but I really don't see ANY connection between Sweet Trip and slowdive... Most of it sounded like mediocre ambient dub, with vocals. Very forgettable. If I'm going to listen to an artist that uses sequenced drums, I'm going to put in Color Filter, Roni Size/Reprazent, or Squarepusher long before I put in Sweet Trip. In fact, I truly HATE Sweet Trip - and it's only because I was given such a ludicrously strong recommendation. My theory: Daniel sells the album. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Apr 1998 17:49:33 EDT From: Catchbreez Subject: Re: big bunghole pentration (jerkoff) yes they are good i have one album it is nice i was really just using them as a comparison ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Apr 1998 18:22:05 -0400 (EDT) From: butterfly mcqueen Subject: Re: Sweet Trip's "Halica" is nothing special > In fact, I truly HATE Sweet Trip - and it's only because I was given such a > ludicrously strong recommendation. > > My theory: Daniel sells the album. jesus, i think you're being quite unfair. i personally think the album is one of the best of the year -- and i see a big slowdive connection. not the *best* comparison, but not so off the mark. blissful guitars and vocals galore... ; e.e. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Apr 1998 16:49:02 -0600 From: Brad Nicholson Subject: Re: Sweet Trip's "Halica" is nothing special At 04:44 PM 23/04/98 -0500, Agent Cooper wrote: > Well, I'm glad Erik spoke up about this album. > > To the Claire de Leon guy (you know the one... the guy with the biggest > sig of the list, the guy who's perpetually plugging his mail order > business...): I for one like hearing about what he's got for sale. If he wasn't plugging his mail order, I would not have a compilation with exclusive tracks by Windy and Carl, Mahogany, and others on the way. Besides, it's no different than the constant trade and for sale lists that others post all the time. > Your > recommendation was over the top, especially for this list. Some of the CD > sounds like 5ep, but I really don't see ANY connection between Sweet Trip > and slowdive... Hmm, some of the CD sounds like a Slowdive EP, but there is no connection between them and Slowdive!? Doesn't make much sense to me. > If I'm going to listen to an artist that uses sequenced drums, I'm going to > put in Color Filter, Roni Size/Reprazent, or Squarepusher long before I > put in Sweet Trip. It's all a matter of personal taste. I for one, think Roni Size is watered down shit, and have never been to big on Squarepusher. I've only heard one song by Sweet Trip on the radio, and was more than impressed by it. > My theory: Daniel sells the album. My theory, Daniel likes the album. I've dealt with him on a few occasions, and he's always been great. He doesn't strike me as the type of guy who would plug crap to make a couple of bucks. brad. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 00:32:06 -0400 From: Andy McMillan Subject: Sweet Trip Disappointments Sorry if anybody felt misled when Daniel and I (among others) loudly sang the praises of Sweet Trip's installment in the Bliss Out series, but I definitely see a connection between "Blue Skied an Clear"-era Slowdive and this record. You make a good point though about how much expectations can alter one's view of a new band. If I had popped the CD in expecting the Second Coming, then I would have been let down too. I think Daniel is a stand-up kind of guy who genuinely loves this style of music--he just tends to gush on like a fanboy now and then (see his recent posts about Mahongany for example). My point: I don't have one. I've been turned onto plenty of great bands I never would have heard otherwise by posts on lists like this one, but I've had my share of stinkers though too (Main for instance). At least I didn't try to argue with that one guy who is just trying to get a rise out of people 'cause he thinks it's cool to be a prick... (so no, it doesn't sound anything like slowdive. sorry.) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Apr 98 08:58:49 CST From: Crios@dminet.davidson-marketing.com Subject: Roni Size?? Hey folks, The second remix of In Mind is now up on my so-called "alternate" site. It's just about 10 MB. http://www.fringeware.com/anathema/cooper/slowdive.html Also, I've put up "Some Velvet Morning", for all of people who couldn't get the U.S. release of Souvlaki. After these, here's the sequence: Good Day Sunshine Missing You Country Rain These are the songs from 5ep, also included on the U.S. release of Souvlaki, but not everyone lives in the U.S., so I'm putting them on my site. After that, I don't know what else I've left out. I *THINK* I may have omitted "Losing Today" from the Morningrise EP... Anyway, please e-mail me and tell me what tracks I still need to put up. Thanks. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 13:37:12 -0400 (EDT) From: aaj292@agora.ulaval.ca (Christian Morin) Subject: Massive Attack i'm from canada and the Massive Attack album is out since last tuesday April 21st Chris ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 13:39:57 -0400 (EDT) From: aaj292@agora.ulaval.ca (Christian Morin) Subject: great drum and bass Roni size....boring To me, you have to go with Amon Tobin and especially 3rd eye foundation if you want great drum and bass!! I know you all don't want to hear what I think is good. I'm sure you all have the same closed minds on this list, so I may as well not even bother telling anyone about anything else. I *LOVE* Third Eye Foundation!!! More good "dark" drum and bass you might like would be the new Witchman double CD (I forget the name), and almost anything by Bill Laswell (Psyconavigation is one of my favorites) All this Drum and Bass stuff is a little new to me, but I tend to like more of the darker, ambiant type stuff.
