(Whew!) Plus the show was 21 and up ONLY. (I just turned 21 in mid-January.) Apart from the throng of beer-swilling ex-hippie inerudite oligophrenial SOWS (which is what Austin and SXSW are all about) it was a good set. Perhaps a great one, in someone else's eyes, but I think it was just too short - only 5 songs... but that probably was out of their hands, since I think each band only gets 1 hour to set up, play, and tear down. Rachel was playing bass again (since I last saw them in '96), and Niel's hair is now shoulder length, and blonder than I previously remembered... Highlights: They started with "To Whom Should I Write", which was excellent. (Although I wish the stupid SXSW sound guy had turned up the organ more...) One of the songs has the word "fuck" in the lyrics, which may be a Halstead first... (I don't recall a "fuck" in any slowdive records...) All new songs. One fan shouted for "Mercy", but considering the time constraints, I can't blame Mojave for limiting the set to new stuff only. I felt like shouting for "Primal", but I was afraid that might have offended the band... Someone shouted "I love you Rachel!"... Comments: I dunno, I think maybe the first album had more emotional investment (if you know what I mean). The songs were well-written, and of the highest caliber - but none of them (for me) really compared to "Pictures" or "Mercy" or "Sarah"... Plus, NONE of the songs had Rachel at lead vocals. I think THAT'S a shame. But they're all still great musicians. Ian was especially on-target, and the guy that played steel guitar on the last two numbers shined as well. After the set: I talked with Rachel for a bit, asked her if she knew anything about the RYKO slow-box, and she said they hadn't heard anything from them - and I guess it's not as though Creation needs their permission or anything... so it still might happen. (Although RYKO never returned my e-mail!) The only thing I had on me that might be autographed was the underside of the brim of my hat, so I solicited a signature from Rachel, but the ball-point pen I had was just wasn't up to the task. She said, "Well, there's an 'R'..." (heheheh) Later I saw Ian at the bar so I asked him for an "I", apologizing for my lack of a marker, then he said, while stretching his arm behind his back to point at his back pack, "Ah, there's a marker in this pocket." So I got to poke around in Ian's backpack. (Heehee!) Ian, the organ player, and Simon Rowe signed it, and I asked permission to borrow the marker so I could track down Rachel (again) and Niel. Afterwards I reutrned the marker to Ian's backpack and thanked everyone profusely. I believe that THREE of the five asked me if I enjoyed the show (Rachel, Ian and Simon), perhaps they too had misgivings about the length, or the mix... But it WAS a great set - if only they'd had more time. And when I asked, they confirmed that they came over here (across the pond) just for SXSW, to which I openly displayed my amazement. And Rachel says she keeps up with the list. (I think I asked that right before the RYKO question...) Anyway, now I have my hat autographed in addition to my Ask Me Tomorrow liner notes (from '96) - my brother just got a digital camera so I'll put up a photo of my hat (if anyone gives a damn) on my MP3 site (which should be updated tonight...). His Name Is Alive followed Mojave 3, and boy have they ever gone to crap... I don't only question their music, but I question their musicianship... Didn't they use to be good? Oh well... Then the High Llamas played - better. Got a free 7". Left before the last act because there were too damn many people and I got what I'd come for... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 02:24:34 EST From: Primarygrl Subject: Re: Adorable justin, i could record you some ADORABLE stuff if ya like... i would have to disagree with the person who compared them to CELL. ADORABLE are in a category all their own (or, they were, at least :::boo hoo:::). just mail me privately and i would be glad to make you a tape. i think ADORABLe is a band that deserves the attention of music lovers...even though they disbanded years back. some of the members are now working on a project called POLAK, or so i hear from the ADORABLE mailing list...i could be wrong, but, i heard their first release is due in the next year to come. traci. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 02:35:22 EST From: Primarygrl Subject: SUGAR PLANT to whomever was interested in obtaining some SUGAR PLANT material: i finally found a cd by this band, and i would gladly trade it, or something. i dunno... just e.mail me privately, because i have lost track of who you are. thanks, traci. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 05:12:43 PST From: "michaelnicki barrett" Subject: cd's sale Ok I have some cd's and others for sale. I have actually only met Neil and Simon (Scott), who of course were extremely nice and helpful, and it is usually Rachel and Neil who gets all the publicity/crowd around them (?) so it's good to hear some "Ian and Simon (Rowe) stories" as well. ;) Do you know / did you find out who played the steel guitar, or was that Simon? I'm wondering about Al Forester though - they didn't use a piano/keyboard in their set I assume? > Rachel was playing bass again (since I last saw them in '96), and > Niel's hair is now shoulder length, and blonder than I previously > remembered... Go Neil!! If he ever decides to grow a (long) beard, he'd be the incarnation of Jesus for sure! ;) > One of the songs has the word "fuck" in the lyrics, which may be a > Halstead first... (I don't recall a "fuck" in any slowdive records...) No I don't think I've ever heard it in a Slowdive song, although it would probably fit in pretty well. In a Mojave 3 song on the other hand... I really can't picture it in one of their beautiful songs? > Someone shouted "I love you Rachel!"... It wasn't that Norwegian guy was it? Maybe he's a hard core Slowdive fan who goes wherever the band goes? Ha ha! :-) > (Although RYKO never returned my e-mail!) I haven't heard from them either. I'd love to see it. A picture to go with the story sort of. Please put it up, thanks! //Erik ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 09:32:50 -0600 (CST) From: John Roseborough Subject: Re: Mojave 3 @ SXSW - a brief review On Sun, 22 Mar 1998, Agent Cooper wrote: > I almost didn't get in to the show - the cover was a whopping $15, and I > checked my wallet and after counting three times, I discovered I had exactly > one $5 and ten $1's. Perhaps a Hey, you forgot that Austin's also about a bunch of imported Northern California computer geeks and people who love to brag loudly in restaurants about how wonderful their band is... :) Really, it's gotten better in the past few years. With bands like 7% Solution, Furry Things, Sixteen Deluxe, Kitty, etc.. this town is starting to have a nice "blissful noise" scene and a crowd that appreciates it. > great one, in someone else's eyes, but I think it was just too short - only 5 > songs... but that probably was out of their hands, since I think each band > only gets 1 hour to set up, play, and tear down. I was able to get Rachel's set list after they left the stage (since I was standing directly in front of her and Neil, and a guy next to me knows how much I love Slowdive and Mojave 3, so he got it and passed it to me!). They played... 1. To Whom Should I Write 2. Caught Beneath Your Heel 3. All Your Tears 4. Who Do You Love 5. It's Your Feet You Don't* 6. Some Kinda Angel 7. Give What You Take 8. Baby's Comin Home * On Rachel's set list, song 5 just said "acoustic". I had to catch the girl next to me who got Neil's list and transcribe the title.. hope I got it right. They played for about 45 minutes. The show started with Rachel smiling out at us saying "we're playing all new songs tonight". I was so happy to see them all on stage.. this was the first chance I'd had to see them live. I don't really have time to write a full review, but here are some thoughts.. I felt that the songs were a bit more mellow and country than what's on "Ask Me Tomorrow" (especially with the slide guitar on the last few songs - I was surprised at how much I liked the sound, given my anti-country music bias that comes from growing up in Texas and hearing twangy guitar from birth). The Lezlie organ was BEAUTIFUL.. they even used an old rotary speaker with it(mmm...). I don't have Anakin yet (so I hadn't heard the one new song), but I didn't hear the "traces of Dylan" in Neil's voice that I think someone on 4AD-L mentioned (thank goodness). Someone yelled before the second song "when can we get the new album" and Rachel said "well, not now... " and then "sometime this year". I hope the rumor that it will be out next month is true. I enjoyed every song played.. and I hope they can make it back to Austin soon. Uhm, no, see, Kitty never plays anymore, and as for 16 De-Sux, well, they're definitely part of the problem. To quote from the "Austin Chronicle Short Story Rejects" page, which everyone should visit at http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/9226/ from "Moszilla": A group of cookie-cut scruffy twenty-somethings lean into their microphones, "Hi, we're the band Sixteen Deluxe! We're the most innovative band in the galaxy. Especially if you've never heard of the Rolling Stones, Sonic Youth, The Flaming Lips, My Bloody Valentine, or any of the other dozens of bands we directly rip-off. Heck, let's just say if you've never heard of music at all, we might interest you. We epitomize the kind of cool subversive vibe so important to Austown Austin-cool." "Sixteen The Sucks" Sixteen The Sucks Once upon a time, there was a band called Sixteen Deluxe. They were the darlings of the Austin Chronicle, a death wish by anyone's standards. They made uninventive, glorified heavy-metal disguised as "noise rock" and the citizens of Austin bought it up, but they were the only ones. They were signed to a major-label, but wasted all the money they were advanced on cocaine and booze. Soon after their much-anticipated debut, they were laughed into hiding by everyone owning copies of "Loveless" and "Hit to Death in the Future Head." Their first single may have been a buzz clip, but no one can remember for sure. In the end, they all died penniless and humiliated. Haaaaahahahahahaha.... > 1. To Whom Should I Write > 2. Caught Beneath Your Heel > 3. All Your Tears > 4. Who Do You Love > 5. It's Your Feet You Don't* > 6. Some Kinda Angel > 7. Give What You Take > 8. Baby's Comin Home EIGHT?
