Has anyone heard of a new release? Or > Spoonfed hybrid? It's my belief that Pale Saints have broken up. I think it was a timely decision; in my opinion, they went downhill after Ian Masters left big time. As for Spoonfed Hybrid, I'm not sure. Pale Saints on The Real World? Hah! You think that's bizarre- I once stumbled upon a made for TV movie that used Catherine Wheel. Spooked the hell out of me. I was half asleep and heard "I'm on my way dowowowown" during some party sequence. I had forgotten all about Monaurul. That was a damn good 12". Anyone know if they are still around? brad ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 21:21:30 PST From: "Andy Kellman" Subject: Monaural Brad/those who care, I'm not sure if they still exist. One of their guitar players visits my work now and then, and as of August or so, he had left the band. Artistic differences, I believe. Last I knew he said that they were continuing without them, but I haven't seen that name pop up in a while. I'm not much of a scenester, though. They're also on a vinyl only UK compilation called Bedroom Ambience. Roy Montgomery and a few other notables are on there as well. The Monaural track is pretty great. -Andy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 00:50:52 -0500 From: jvanslem Subject: A cry for help...... Dear friends, Ok, Here's the deal. I have absolutely no Slowdive bootlegs. As far as official releases I have only the bare essentials. Would some kind soul be willing to make me a copy of their bootlegs? Or better yet, if they're audio bootlegs on CD, let me borrow, yes, borrow it, so I can burn it onto CD. For real. Thanks (ahead of time) Justin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 22:46:39 -0800 From: voltron Subject: Re: Halou BTW you can see their website at http://www.imagesmith.com/halou ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 22:45:08 -0800 From: voltron Subject: Re: Halou Primarygrl wrote: > In a message dated 98-01-28 03:02:23 EST, you write: > > << Also along the lines of gusgus I'd have to mention Halou, a husband and > wife duo from San Francisco. They haven't released anything yet as Halou, but their other band, Anymore has a CD out. Same singer and songwriter/programmer. Anymore is more of a traditional band, bass, guitar, drums, vocals, and remind me of curve/cocteau twins. I think you can find the CD at Streetlight Records in SF. They started a monthly event called the Glad Hand which features live electronic bands, and they will be playing at the February Glad Hand on the 10th at the Justice League in San Francisco. I'm sure if you go to the show and ask them, they can hook you up with some material. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 02:13:54 EST From: Primarygrl Subject: Re: Hello In a message dated 98-01-28 23:57:16 EST, you write: << Lastly- has anyone heard of Monaural? I happened to pick up Main's Firmament II, and was wondering what's up with this release? Is this how Main's stuff generally sounds or is there a concept they/he? were trying to work with on this particular album? I have to admit, even though on my first hearing, it was quite dull (as mentioned above, "... 20 minute song droning on and on"), I eventually likened to it just a bit, because it's like listening to random noise (not many sounds). However, I don't recommend it... it's scary. :) (<--face denoting joke) dlee ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 02:29:05 EST From: Flwr2hide Subject: Re: verve/araki A Nothren Soul is wonderful on your own and so it goes are beautiful songs and life an ocean is great (imagine the future woke up with a scream, i was buying some feelings from a vending machine) stormy clouds --- alsion was also in the movie during the make out scene ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 02:31:06 EST From: Flwr2hide Subject: Re: verve/nike i find you comment about the verve sucking to be unfounded im glad slowdive broke up that way you can say mojave 3 sucks because it isnt spaey tripped out bliss the verve are wonderful ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 02:40:35 EST From: Flwr2hide@aol.com Subject: Re: verve/nike my only problem with bittersweet in the nike comercial is that they have no rights to it so they arent getting any money and it willbecome known as the nike song ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 02:43:30 EST From: Primarygrl Subject: Re: Halou In a message dated 98-01-29 01:59:06 EST, you write: << They haven't released anything yet as Halou, but their other band, Anymore has a CD out. They have three albums, "Music For Nitrous > Oxide", "Gravataional Pull Versus The Desire For Aquatic Life", and "The > Ballasted Orchestra". They take the "run your guitar through 15 effects > pedals and a signal processor, and it doesn't matter what you play" > apporach to music. While their live shows do conform somewhat to the "approach" you describe, I must take exception to your description as it applies (or rather, doesn't) to their records. Their records, especially The Ballasted Orchestra, are MUCH more thoughtful than you give them credit for. I doubt that tracks 2 & 6 were simply random notes and rhythms. I definitely think that everyone (not just the listees) should have an opportunity to lie down in the dark and listen to some Stars of the Lid. (And hey, they're from my town! (Austin) Hard to believe that Stars of the Lid and utter crap white-boy blues "legend" Stevie Ray Vomit are from the same STATE, much less the same municipality...) > Also, in the non-guitar oriented ambient spectrum, check out Sonic Boom (as > well as Kevin Shield's, Eddie Provost's, andKevin Martin's) side project - > "Experimental Audio Research". they're probably my favorite ambient outfit > of the last few years. It's very electronic oriented stuff. Mainly Sonic > messing around with his multitude of vintage noise makers. > > brad Well, the only thing Kevin's ever done was some guitar treatments for one song on one of their records (the title track of "Beyond The Pale") - and Mesmerised (by far their best record) is much more of a meeting of the minds than later releases, which are indeed Sonic twiddling knobs on his Serge and fiddling with his Theremin. (Not to say that Beyond the Pale and Millennium Music don't have value - they're great - just not as 'musical' as Mesmerised. Actually the altered saxophone on "in the cold light of day" (Beyond the Pale) is really nice - puts you in a void. Really spooky with the vocalizations... Good record. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 04:40:36 EST From: Primarygrl Subject: change in sounds In a message dated 98-01-29 03:13:21 EST, you write: << all of radiohead love the verve martin and sice of the boo's love'em kevin shields loves the verve so they cant be that bad >> i never go by what others think, really (i don't care WHO they are). i am more into liking something if it sounds good to me. i like the recent verve album, as well as storm in heaven. i, personally, didn't care for the a northern soul album. no big deal. i don't see why it should piss you off if people don't like something a band does (because of a change in sound). there are many bands who i adore who happen to make an album that just doesn't suit me...i don't know why. i didn't care for lovelife, by lush, either. but...i enjoy EVERY cocteau twins album. i love all of slowdive's releases. i liked every cure album, minus wild mood swings. i could name many more bands that have changed sounds from album to album, but that keep my interest . i think it just depends on the individual, and i don't call it bellyaching. that sounds more like what you are doing. ------------------------------ End of Avalyn Digest Vol.98 #16 ********************************
