It's on Sire (Japan). Guess I still had "Reprise" on me brain a bit too much last night. As for the cover, I don't know that there ever *really* was an actual controversy about its graphics, but if it had been released in the USA it probably would've had a fair chance of stirring-up a controversy. The cover features a half nude approximately 14-year-old girl -- ala the old Blind Faith album cover -- but in this case she is sitting in a backwards chair facing the camera. I don't think the photograph was meant to be pornographic, but undoubtedly someone would probably be offended by the sight of a young girl's breasts on a record cover. If I'm not mistaken again, this is a photograph taken by Robert Maplethorpe, who became a controversial character himself after his death in the right-wing anti-arts witchhunts back in the early 1990s. As for the "Grasshopper" CD-EP I bought: Best damn $11.99 I ever spent! The photographer is some guy named Jock Sturges who also did similar cover art for the Twisterella and Leave them All Behind singles. I don't remember if there was any controversy over the artwork when these were released in '92. I'm sure Sturges came under fire for it when the photos were first unveiled. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Jan 1998 09:32:16 -0600 (CST) From: "..." <1cc5776@unixstew.tstc.edu> Subject: rare music owners stingy! I agree with this and other messages like it! I've found it so difficult, particularly with Slowdive fans (ironically), to just get some dubs of the rarer stuff. I'm also on the Swervedriver list where within a week of someone suggesting it, a member had volunteered to compile a set of two 90 minute tapes containing every rare song and every b-side and hard to find 7" and other vinyl release Swervedriver had ever put out. I had my copy within a few week for the cost of postage and the tape cost to the person who recorded mine. With everyone always talking about how inspiring and beautiful Slowdive's music is and how good art should be easier to come by, I'm surprised no one has mobilized something like this yet. I'd do it, but I only have what's easy to find (Just For a Day, Souvlaki, and Morningrise e.p.). I realize that it is illegal to sell stuf like that for a profit, but there must be some good will doers somewhere on this list. Let's get together and get the great music of this wonderful band out! cory On Tue, 13 Jan 1998, Mark wrote: >> I have been on this list for a while and I am just going to throw out a >> thought. I put together a rarities tape myself of all the eps, blue day included, the flexi songs, three unreleased songs, bleed, song 1, silver screen so I'd be happy to let others get a copy. I'm just low on blank tapes that's all. wade people need to stop being stingy about this music, that's not what this music is about! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Jan 1998 09:57:55 -0600 From: o_o_o Subject: Re: rare music owners stingy! We have indeed been down this road before. I don't think it is that people are stingy. I don't know too many people who have a complete discography. I do have the three EPs that comprise Blue Day (and I also have Blue Day). But I don't have the 5EP/In Mind remixes or Outside Your Room. I'd be glad to tape off what I have, but to be honest, I still see these EPs for sale all the time, as well as the 5EP/In Mind remixes. I have all the albums, and again, I see them for sale all the time. Granted, I live in the US, and frequently use mail order, but anyone who really wants slowdive stuff can get most of it. Heck, for enough of a commission, I'd gladly be the middle man in procuring someone a slowdive collection. There are some Rare 7"s, such as the ride tour split, which I recently saw for something like US$45, and those are the kind of items that would make such a comp difficult. And to be sure, there is no way I am sending my Slowdive CDs to someone else for compiling purposes. But I'll tape what I have. As much as I abhor them, a tape tree might be the only answer. --gary >> I agree with this and other messages like it! So what I suggest is that we contact the band (well, Rachel is reading this so she knows about it) and ask what they think, if it is okay for us to make a "fan base Slowdive compilation CD" sort of, which will a) not be for sale, and b) only available to the listies. I have no idea how many copies we would have to make, but it'll probably be less than 200. Now how does that sound? //Erik ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 22:17:44 -0800 From: "Tim Warner" Subject: Re: Blue Day question Nah...just song credits and an address for more information, which I'm sure is far outdated.
