Scandinavian Indie design at Brofastivalen

The first Brofastivalen festival which is held this weekend at the
building site for the bridge between Sweden and Denmark (see the
Festivals 98 page on the Sin site for more information) decided
to use a Scandinavian Indie designed logo as the official one.
Southern newspaper Sydsvenska Dagbladet, who will run an extensive
coverage of the festival on their website, has been given permission
to use the logo as a part of their coverage as well.

That sure is interesting. Would they be able to get the extra 2% needed
to run the show at Luger as well, if they wanted to? Who actually owns
the 51% not owned by EMA? And does EMA have anything to say with 49%?
And how about the ownership of the other booking agencies in Sweden?
United Stage? Kontur? I gather Skrikhult is 100% private?

Hi, a quick one:
1. No
2. The rest is owned together by Ola Broquist, Patrick Fredriksson &
Morgan Johansson.
3. Well, a relationship like this is based on trust and confidence in
each other. So, it really doesn't matter if EMA owns 49% or 51%, but
it has a symbolic value for us. I don't know what people think of EMA,
I get a kind of "major label discussion" feeling on this whole thing.
EMA is owned by private persons as well and not by a beer company or
tobacco company or anything like that. They started out kind of like
Motor and Luger, by music loving people who did what they wanted to
do and got successfull.
I don't know who owns United Stage, I think that is private as well.
KONTUR is owned by Kontaktnatet, an "umbrella" organisation for non
profit making organisations from the whole of Sweden.

I picked this up here in NYC the other day mainly just from name
recognition off the list (I had some CD money that was just burning a hole
in my pocket!) and I haven't entirely sorted out my feelings about it yet.
It's definitelly quite pretty at points, and almost vaguely rocking at
others. But then there are some songs that don't really seem to go
anywhere or just feel somehow thrown together. Overall I'm happy with my
purchase but there are some random naggin thigns about it that just kinda
bug me... Loved the songs Loser-Fi and Head Full of Tar, though... (and a
few others)
Anyone else here own this/ have an opinion?
BTW: I'm glad that NONS have a US office now, which is, I'm assuming, the
reason why this CD didn't cost an arm and a leg.

iota - swedens own post rock darlings are playing at THE NURSERY INJECTION
on JUNE 9th. They sure is a fab live band so be sure not to miss them. And
I am sure you are all dying to check out the festival boat which got so
much media attention for taking some drugs and weapons to sweden the other
day. the finest festival in swedens history is a must. at the same night
when iota plays you can also see swedens no:1 free jazz artist MATS
GUSTAFSSON as well as rockout and fint tillsammans. and all this for only
50 crownes. unbelivable!
and fuck me if iota are not playing in stockholm on june 10th again. they
will do another live gig at the tanto festival in tantolunden on june 10th.
they play at 1400. PLUXUS also plays that festival (at 1600). if i remember
right the tanto line up also includes monster, popsicle, this perfect day
and more.

anyone who saw BENT SPANNER ARTY BANNER at pop dakar. Well, i guess the
festival was not much of a thrill this year but they sure made it worth

The Axel Boys Quartet is a big joke. I guess that Axel Boysen, who was
at the time, host in Puls ( a bad music show on TV2) tried to make a
little money as the danish Mike Flowers. He nearly succeed, they loved
his album in Japan. Nobody took it seriously in Denmark, maybe because
everybody knew the guy from TV. I never found out, if he was naturally
dumb or if he just pretended. This guy could never say a sentence
without making a mistake. It became a style, many girls ( and boys :)
loved his look though.

They are still around,they were once Denmark first Punk band. They
started in 1977 as the Sods. They are still one of Denmarks best live
band today. Peter Peter took his guitar and left in 1996 to start
Bleeder. Knud Odde who plays bass is a very good painter as well.

This is from their last album released in 1996. Here is what I post

They split up in September 1997. Officially the reason was a lack of
commercial success, but unofficially there had also been some problems
within the band and between the members. The release in January 1998 of
the compilation CD "COMPENDIUM GREATEST HITS", with 16 old and two new
songs, was the main attraction at the burial of Gangway-- the anti
heroes par excellence of Danish pop music.

Curious...this is a Danish band? It reminded me of an Icelandic band
that I know existed in the mid-late 80's of the same name (translation:
Sogblettir). I clicked on the top link and saw that one of the girls in
this Danish Lovebites band has an Icelandic name. Coincidence or have
the band relocated?
Fun factoid: Bjork's younger brother Arnar played in the
Lovebites/Sogblettir.

I also think that this is a very good record, but that it could have been
better. I think that it could have been more varied. A lot of the songs
sound quite much the same: Dylan-esque, lo-fi depression. One or a few more
"Kelly Good" would have been appreciated ;). I also find it a tiny bit sad
that they have become so good at recording; the sound quality makes it hard
to believe that this album is recorded on the same 4-tracker as their debut
album "Volley u make" was recorded on. Somehow one loses the charming
feeling of having the band playing live in your living room. But, once
again, I think it is a good album.
Perhaps it should also be mentioned that the album *is*, in one sense,
"thrown together". The part of it which is called "Plug" was initially
meant to be released as a mini-album. That never happened and, instead,
those songs ended up on this album, together with the "Assemble" part.
For those (few?) that might be interested: I am not really sure what CARPET
PEOPLE are up to today (anyone else who knows?). A couple of months ago I
received an e-mail from their drummer Robert Norsten (also one of the guys
who founded the excellent NONS label) where he told me that they were
"playing with their tape-recorder", whatever that might mean. I guess there
might be a risk that Emil Odling departs from the band again, if WARD J
takes too much of his time. But that would probably not be much of a
problem - the band has survived previous departures when people have left
the band to play in BLITHE and KOMEDA. Besides, it has worked fine with
just three members before.

But they are not *that* lo-fi. It is an 8-tracker they use. Still, the
sound quality has improved very much between those two albums, because of
the band members' improving recording skills.
And to make this message somewhat less redundant than it really is I can
also use it to send a public warning to anyone who is planning to go and
see BAD CASH QUARTET play live: wear a helmet! At yesterday's gig I almost
got two objects in my head. One of them was the drummer's shoe. The other
one was the drummer himself. I know he is mad, because I saw these guys
play live last year too, but trying to stage-dive when the number of people
that might be able to catch you is this small is not something I recommend
(and most of those few who stood there moved away when he came flying
through the air. Ouch!). The gig was quite OK, though. Much better and
tighter than last year's gig. Loud and jangly rock not far from ARCHERS OF
LOAF and PAVEMENT. Definitely promising (how old are they? 17? 18? Not
older than that, I think?).

This is a warning of another kind:
I've seen Bad Cash Quartet twice this year, and it was the worst two
live experiences I've ever had. BCQ cannot play, the singer cannot sing
(hell, he cannot even scream), and the songs does not work at all live.
They really, really STINK. To compare them with Archers of Loaf and
Pavement is dreadfully insulting. Those bands don't exist in the same
universe.

I agree when it comes to their "hits" - the songs you hear on the
radio every day sound like they are made for being played on the
radio compared to the rest. Commercial even. I'm not sure what the
English word I'm looking for is, but in Swedish it's "Slatstruken".
I asked the drummer (in the bar) about it afterwards and he said he
found my comments insulting...
The rest of the songs were not great, but at least they were okay.

Former Aquadays member Sarah Assbring is active in yet another band
from Gothenburg called eternia autobomb. They formed about two years
ago, and consists of Jennie Boije af Gennas (piano, guitars), Jonas
Sundqvist (bass) (who are also David Sundqvist of Shallow Soundwave's
brother) and before mentioned Sarah Assbring on vocals. When they
started out they had a drummer, but that didn't work out, so these
days they are using a drummachine (though they are looking for a new
drummer, so if you are interested - contact them now). The band has
a brand new demo, recorded and co-produced by David Sundqvist, which
has been in the making for about a year. Their greatest inspiration

Subject: [NEWS] 7th P3 and Rockparty scholarship
7th P3 and Rockparty scholarship

The seventh P3 (Swedish National Radio, channel P3) and Rockparty
(arrangers of the Hultsfred Festival, among other things) scholarship
awards will be held at this year's Hultsfred Festival in June. One
or several enthusiasts within the music business will receive or
share the 10.000 SEK sum. The scholarship was first given out in
1992, and people and companies like Peter Ahlqvist (Burning Heart
Records), Energy Records, Luger BA, Tompa Eken, Cari Lekebusch and
Eva Wilke, have previously been awarded. This year's nominees are:
* NONS Records, Umea (Per Helin, Helena Svard, Robert Norsten)
* Emmaboda Festival (Hakan Karlsson, Magnus Karlsson, Ulf Ekeroth)
* Robban Becirovic and John L Bystrom, Norrkoping (from the music
magazines Close-Up and Sound Affects)
* Totte Lundgren, Malmo (responsible for the venue KulturBolaget KB)
The four nominees will be presented in radio channel P3's program
Musikjournalen, Monday to Thursday between June 8th and 11th, which
starts at 6pm (18:00). The winner(s) will then be revealed in P3's
live broadcast from the Hultsfred Festival on Friday June 12th,
starting at 1pm (13:00). If you are going to the festival and want
to see this event, the award is given away at the P3 trailer in the
Estraden area.

The summer is almost here now, and the festivals complete their line-
ups one by one. In this week's list, you'll find several last additions
and a couple of changes as well.
* Arvika Festival (July 10-11, Arvika, Sweden)
Are still adding names to their line-up. This week they added:
Fint Tillsammans (S), The Mopeds (S), RA-mantik (S), Samla Mammas Manna (S),
Sara (S), Soundrug (S), Tva fisk och en flask (S), and finally Vurma (S).
* Bollnas Festival (July 2-4, Bollnas, Sweden)
New this week: DiLeva (S), Dromhus (S), Incka (S) and Popsie (S).
Cancelled: Antiloop (S) and Singer (S).
* Emmaboda Festival (August 7-8, Emmaboda, Rasslebygd, Sweden)
Added a couple new bands this week as well: Hell on Wheel (S) and Pluxus (S).
* Hultsfred Festival (June 11-13, Hultsfred, Sweden)
New this week (and final): Agent Dan (UK), Eagle Eye Cherry (S), Sidekick (S)
and finally Teddybears Sthlm (S). Cancelled: Antiloop (S) and Linton Kwesi
Johnson w/Dennis Bovell Dub Band (UK) (because their drummer broke his arm
recently).
* Roskilde Festival (June 25-28, Roskilde, Denmark)
Even though they said it was the final line-up, they are still adding
artists and bands to it (and more will follow as well). This week it
was: Great White (US), Paradise Lost (UK), Slayer (US), Tricky (UK),
and TV-2 (DK).
* Sommarens Sista Suck (August 21-22, Eskilstuna, Sweden)
The cool and free festival in Eskilstuna in August released the first names
this week: Aavikko (SF), Caesar's Palace (S) (22), Milhouse (S), Rasmus (SF),
Ruthlezz D's (S), The Snails (S), The Valets (S), Venus in Blue Jeans (S),
and finally Yeah (S). About five additional artists and bands will be added
before the line-up is complete.
* Stockholm Water Festival (August 7-15, Stockholm, Sweden)
New in the line-up this week: Backyard Babies (S).
* Tivolirock (July 4, Kristianstad, Sweden)
Added the final artists and bands to their line-up this week - here they
are: The Hellacopters (S), Linda Lampenius (SF), Lolita Pop (S),
Monster (S), and Titiyo (S).
* Tullakrok Festival (July 18-19, Angelholm, Tullakroksangen, Sweden)
Added: Formula (S).

Now, this is becoming ridiculous but once again I feel as if I have to
correct myself. The info about the ettnollett party was taken from their
website and now I see that it says *May* 8th. Though it is featured as
"today's news". But I fear it is some kind of mistake - that it really is
old news about the former party - a month ago. It sure would be strange if
it was held on a monday, come to think of it. Perhaps webmaster Claes, who
is on this list, can shed some light on it?

is that they come from Finland and have released a single called
