But I can probably not afford going there this year anyway). More info at www.lollipop.se /Micke, awaiting a festival-free summer (except perhaps for the Nykvarn festival in Linkoping) unless if some kind soul gives me tickets for free, that is ;) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Apr 1998 20:47:10 +0300 From: "Raitis" Subject: Latvian rocknews 17 april Latvian rocknews 17 april (short version/ for long version call: Raitis@rb.lv) 1. Hi. Here comes the tale of Norwegian indie compilation (CD-R) adventures here in lv. So, I received this CD-R at April 9th and in the pre Easter rush, I didn't manage to give CD to Pçteris P. (good mate of mine and the host of alternative and indie music show called "P*N" on Latvian national radio 2 (broadcasting all over Latvia), but I did it in this week at April 16th and the playlist for all Latvia was (in order): ASTROBURGER "Compromise Solutions" DIPSOMANIACS "Kill Some Day" MOTORPSYCHO "Like Always" HOBBITS "Oblyga Tjejer" SEIGMEN "Metropolis" BEL CANTO "Unicorn" I've copied 1 unit for myself and I sent the CD right away to guy from Czechia. I kept this CD for 1 week and 1 day, hope you don't kill me. And now my personal review/opinions about Norwegian bands: MOTORPSYCHO - they're great, the best on this comp. They remind me PAVEMENT. And the song "Like Always" is the cool. To what label MOTORPSYCHO is signed? And how to contact them? (I have some ideas --- they could come to Rîga) BEL CANTO - sweet, mellow pop. I like them. Have they released any LP since 1992? ASTROBURGERS - good enough. About other bands - they weren't bad, but I haven't say anything, they just simply hadn't touched any string of my soul. That's in brief all. See you in the next level. Shimmering is their best though. And the album previous to Shimmering called Birds Of Passage is also very good, indeed. > About other bands - they weren't bad, but I haven't say anything, they > just simply hadn't touched any string of my soul. Good news then that they have their own homepage on the Shelflife label site! Their pages also contain info on the related bands Semester, Sunshine Boys, Red Sleeping Beauty, Poprace, Starlet and Club 8. Check it out and listen to the beautiful 'This And That' from their CD "Advantage Acid House Kings": http://www.shelflife.com/acidhousekings/ +++ Doris Days Finally Celebrated When label Some Pearls (Slask Records) released Doris Days' debut album "Live In Poland" at the end of 1996, nothing really happened - apart from a couple of really good reviews in papers, magazines and fanzines. And from online media (which we won't mention) "I have not heard something this beatutiful and addictive from Sweden in a long time." who rightfully labelled their music "urban trip-hop" and who also spread the word and the music around the globe. Now almost two years later and through a licence deal in Japan, the Brits have been awakened. The single "To Ulrike M." re- released two months ago on British label Dorado including three new remixes is included in play lists on both UK and Swedish radio these days - and the mentioned 12" received the "12-inch of the week" award on P3 Dans recently. A new (really new) single is on the way, but will not be released until autumn. Until then, why not dig out Doris Days' first single "Places" - released on BarnsligaSkivor/Some Pearls in 1993? Or their very first release ever "Cricket Buddhist" a 9-song cassette released on BarnsligaSkivor 1992. More info: Slask Records - http://www.algonet.se/~slask/ Swedish Morning paper "Svenska Dagbladet" published an article about the band on friday last week - read it here (in Swedish): http://www.svd.se/svd/city/musik/doris.html. +++ Dryad receives award Unsigned Stockholm-based rockers Dryad which you possibly have read about here (if not, check out the interview in the "Interviews" section on the Sin site) are starting to get the attention they deserve with well attended gigs in central Stockholm as a result. The band also received the Kulturhuset / Lava Demotek ("Culture house" sort of) in Stockholm "demo of the winter" award, and will make their festival debut at the Mera Hitlatar festival in Handen (outside Stockholm) this summer. If you have a chance, check out the next issue of the magazine "Chili" where they are featured. And if you want to see them play live in the near future, Cage (in Gamla Stan in Stockholm) on wednesday is their next stop. +++ gusGus are on the move Icelandic gusGus (4AD), along with designer Linda B. Arnadottir, introduced their first collection of clothing called Product for "Cry Lab" (fashion company managed by the band) at the world Art Fair Expo '98 in Portugal in February. The Icelandic government selected the band to represent Iceland at the event. This first collection will be introduced in Paris from October 98. On the music side, the band recently completed the song "Monument" for the untitled Depeche Mode tribute album, which is to be released in April on A&M's 1500 Records. They are about to remix tracks for David Byrne, Underdog and the upcoming Bjork single "Hunter" (to be released in June), though which tracks has yet to be decided. gusGus own and new second album will be out in September. A tentative title has been revealed to be "Treasures In Lava" and the album will contain about 10 songs. The first half has been entrusted to Herr Legowitz for the drum kits, samples and loops, while the rest will be mixed by Biggi and Steph. Movie-news: The song "Gun" is on the soundtrack for the film "Suicide Kings" starring Christopher Walken. The group is now working on a new song for the Ben Stiller film "Permanent Midnight". And finally, video-news: The next gusGus video will be "Barry" (now in post-production in London). +++ Komeda on tour + new video Celebrated NONS popsters Komeda are on the road in Sweden at the moment. On thursday they are back for the second (third?) time in Linkoping at Herrgar'n, but if you don't live there, they do play in Malmo two days later. 23/4 Linkoping and 25/4 Malmo that is. A new video is on the way as well - this time it's to the song "Cul de Sac". +++ Leslies reveal name of US label Swedish sooth-popsters Leslies who were previously reported (see older news updates) to be on the way to release a 7" single called "That's Me" in the US have now revealed the name of the label: "American Pop Project", which is run by Mel Chaplowitz. No word yet if the band will have to change their name on it or not (see older news for info on this). +++ Dorian Records The planned indie double CD compilation which was to be released in December last year never happened, as you probably noticed. Now news dropped in today directly from the label owner Roger which said that he is still (!) trying to put together a compilation (or two actually) - one twee-pop and one 'regular' indie-pop. So here we go again! :-) More information is on the way. +++ P3 Pop Monday 27/4 Swedish National Radio channel P3 on monday between 19.03-22.00 is, as usual once a month, "Pop Monday". Playing live between 21.03-22.00 is Sophie Zelmani (Warner) and guests between 19.03- 21.00 are Tommy 16 (AWSF - also playing live) and The Confusions (Massproduktion). A special about Finnish pop with the spotlight on Supperheads (Warner) can also be heard this night. ** Erik ** The News is also available on the Scandinavian Indie website ** http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/scan.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 01:02:13 +0200 From: Erik Soderstrom Subject: [TOUR] Birdnest Tour List [20-Apr-98] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie COMPLETE Birdnest Tour List Scandinavian Indie April 20th, 1998 by Erik Soderstrom All dates without country code are in Sweden ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SCANDINAVIAN: BURST + Puffball, the Hives, First Degree Murder 25/4 Fagersta CHARTA 77 30/4 Lindesberg (w/Coca Carola) 1/5 Stockholm, Tre Backar (w/Coca Carola, Troublemakers) 2/5 Boras, Rockborgen (w/Coca Carola, Troublemakers) 16/5 Vasteras MART HALLGREN 6/5 Stockholm, Tumba, Storvretsskolan (w/Coca Carola, Smisk) 21/5 Stockholm, Kafe 44 PLASTIC PRIDE/SEPARATION 20/4 Stuttgart (D) 21/4 Karlsruhe (D) 22/4 Dresden (D) 24/4 Halmstad PURUSAM 24/4 Burtrask 24/4 Umea 8/5 Ursviken * SPOILER 13/6 Stockholm, Junibacken * = not 100% sure yet ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Birdnest Production Tour List updates are posted now and then More tour dates: http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/gigs.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 01:45:01 +0200 From: Erik Soderstrom Subject: [LIST] Music on the TV [17-Apr-98] ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie MUSIC ON THE TV Scandinavian Indie April 17 -> 23, 1998 by Erik Soderstrom Day Date Artist/What TV Program Channel Time --- ----- ---------------------- ------------------- ----------- ----- Fri 17/4 Anouk En Kvall Med Luuk TV 4 16.25 R Musikmagasinet Klubb Musikmagasinet ZTV 00.15 R Sat 18/4 Live Live MTV Europe 22.00 R History of rock/pop Dancing In The Str. Thank you so much. magnus.olsson@mbox319.swipnet.se ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 18:08:12 +0200 From: "Micke Rehnstrom" Subject: Happydeadmen definitely dead (as a band, at least) A quite sad peace of news has showed up on the Benno website today (www.benno.com). HAPPYDEADMEN has decided to call it quits after ten years and three albums. The last album, "Bullfights every sunday", has still only been released in Japan. Hopefully a Swedish release of that album is on its way too. /Micke ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 18:16:28 +0200 From: Erik Soderstrom Subject: Re: Happydeadmen definitely dead (as a band, at least) > A quite sad peace of news has showed up on the Benno website today > (www.benno.com). "Bullfights Every Sunday" is a gorgeous album, so hopefully it'll get released, but when Ola Hermanson is in the US leaving Trampolene to it's destiny, who knows what'll happen? By the way - I got a postcard (snail mail) from Cirkus Cirkor (!) today where they asked about addresses to festivals - but apparently they don't have e-mail. Does anyone here have any contact with the group? I really don't want to use snail mail if I don't have to... //Erik ------------------------------ End of Scandinavian Indie Digest Vol.98 #38 ********************************************
