Greetings friends from NONS-USA!
We are happy to say that after wonderful mini-tours, both Ray Wonder and
Cloudberry Jam are safely back in Sweden, though both bands didn't want to
leave and can't wait to return!
Ray Wonder played 6 dates including great shows on the East and West Coasts,
the Midwest and SXSW. Highlights included meeting and playing with Swoon 23,
Buffalo Daughter, Helium, Number One Cup, Bunnygrunt, and their American
debut in LA with Brian Jonestown Masacre in which Ray Wonder's number one
fan, Beck Hanson, turned up and danced the night away!
Cloudberry Jam played their debut gig at SXSW attracting all sorts at the
lovely Maggie Mays West patio. The band then made their way to proudly play
the stage in Minneapolis where "Purple Rain" was filmed. Joining Cloudberry
Jam on the stage were Minneapolis' local faves The Hang Ups. They and ended
their trip playing with their hero, Jeff Tweedy, in Chicago. Naturally,
Cloudberry Jam amassed many new friends and fans as well as several new
gizmos for their home studio and many American comic books unfound in their
home in Sweden.
We all want to thank everyone who came out to see the bands!

Recorded this past fall in their home studio in Linkoping, Cloudberry Jam have
added rougher edges to their pop-splendor creating a huge mix of their
trademark soulful sound with multi-layered orchestrations and walls of
guitars, no doubt a result of their Built To Spill/Dinosaur Jr. influences.

"Assemble and Plug" is the second sampling from these Umea dealers in slowcore
sound. The new disk, a 2 part exploration of the soul, is sad, sweet and the
type of record to be played over and over again to slow the heartbeat. If Low,
Palace Music, The Promise Ring, Bedhead and Cobolt were all in a cage-match
with Carpet People, probably noone would really win but would all flee the
ring, weeping, to go out and buy "Assemble and Plug".

Well, I know that _something_ happened in Uppsala, but not exactly what it
was. I received an e-mail from Anders Alstrin in the band REMINDER that
said they were gonna play there. But he did not know about any other bands
that were gonna play, just that there were - as you say - 36 bands playing.
My sister, who is a student at Uppsala university, did not know anything
either. Mysterious thing, this.

I have been wondering for some time whatever happens to some of these mix
tapes that are being sent out on different tape chains. Is there, for
example, any news about what happened to that tape with Spanish label bands
that Kimmo sent away a _long_ time ago? Could it be that the record labels
do not approve of these things and therefore make secret treaties with Post
offices all over the world, that the Post office employees are to destroy
everything that looks like one of these tape comps? Or is it invisible UFOs
that are extremely fond of the indie sounds of the Earth? Or is it just
vicious people on the list that are too lazy/too greedy to post the
tapes/discs to the next person on the list.
Perhaps there is a natural (good?) explanation for the delay of that
lecture disc (not that I care very much for my own sake, cause I am not on
that list, but still..) but that Spanish tape mush be at least a year since
it was sent away, right? And that is not the first time it happens either!
/Micke, who found it quite interesting to see LEATHER STRIP being mentioned
on this list a while back. Mr Larsens music is not very exciting, IMO, but
I still like the message in "The white disgrace" for sure (though I had to
look up the lyrics on the web, because they were impossible to hear through
all the distortion) ;)

Hello scan-indians,
I just read the messages about the not-so-good situation concerning
the advancing of tape chains. I'm not a web expert, but would it be
a sound idea to try to make tapechains work via scan-indie WEB
page, so that tape is sent to Erik and then he converts the songs to
MPEG? Of course the sound quality is not the same etc, but as far as I
understand the idea of tapechains is to give people the possibility
to get to know new bands and in case you are looking for quality you'd have
to go and buy the CD anyway. With the songs uploaded to the
scan-indie page I can have a listen to each one of them and go looking for
some more in case I liked the band.
What obstacles are there?
Don't stone me if you find this idea totally absurd.

It's definitely an idea - though the obstacle in this case is
really the record labels and companies. They'll probably throw
big rocks at me if I put full-length MP3's with their artists
up on the web. They're pretty nasty when it comes to that these
days. Of course one can always ask the labels first.

I think I've only actually received the tape from about half of the chains
I've signed up for on this list. And yet you'd think scandie fans would be
the most honest, upright, helpful people...;-)

Well, I have no idea. The only thing I know is that I haven't got it back;
the same happened with the Finnish Indie chain tape which was sent on its
journey something like two years ago... It's not that I really need to have
them back, but it makes me sad to think that some people who really wanted
to hear those songs never got the chance...

Heh, well, for the Spanish tape it was quite the opposite: I received a nice
letter from the Siesta label thanking me for doing promotion for them, and
received a sampler tape from Mateo with tracks from recent & forthcoming
Siesta releases.

Whatever it is, it is really discouraging to see your tapes vanishing into a
black hole before too long...

The main obstacle for me would be my 9600 bps modem + crappy soundcard and
computer speakers, and I don't think I'm alone with the problem? Even though
the MP3 format seems to be rather compact, it would take too much time and
energy to download the files and transfer them on tape in order to be able
to hear them properly...

Yeah, there are indeed labels who just don't want free promotion for their
artists... :) Do they seriously think that an MP3 file could keep someone
from buying the real thing, if s/he thinks the music is great and worth
owning? Of course, if they (the labels) want to keep people from hearing how
shite their artists are, that's completely understandable... :)

My main point when offering this kind of solution is that it's
bloody annoying to read reviews and discussions about bands one
has never heard. I don't know if I'm a bit too optimistic about this
whole business, but there has got to be some little labels that don't
mind their music being available to a much wider audience via internet.
This sounds as a whole new enterprise, but maybe such small labels
agree to have somekind of a "promotion week" when their artists' songs
are available on the scan-indie page and we can have a listen. After a
while they will be removed from the web and that's it.
Finally, putting songs to the webpage doesn't prevent keeping the
tapechain thing going. There would just be more flexibility.
I have to admit though that besides the problem with greedy labels, this
could increase Erik's workload (which, I've got the feeling, must be
enormous) to an extent that he'd simply get pissed off. :) This is a
joke of course, but a very empathic one.

In case any of you have missed me (I wish... :), I'm happy to announce
that after a few months absence I'm now back on the list, from my new
home in Oxford, UK.
I was in Stockholm a few weeks ago, and had the opportunity to see
IOTA supporting Mogwai at Studion. A very good performance from
what must be one of Sweden's most interesting bands right now.
Anyone who likes Tortoise (who doesn't...?) should check them out
immediately. To my knowledge their EP is only available on vinyl though,
which at least I think is a bit sad. :(

I think one of them (Sebastian Buttrich?) is now in a band (or maybe it's
a solo project?) called Astoria. Don't know much about them, though,
execpt that they did the transitions between the songs on Yo La Tengo's
Autumn Sweater EP.

There is some new material (though no new issue of Stokage yet). Above all,
I think you should check the new "topics" section. This is meant to be a
place to discuss indie music in general. And NO!!! it is not supposed to
become a new "Stuff" (where most of the contributions were crap, even for
those of us who understand Swedish). "Topics" is in English, more serious
than "Stuff" and everyone (not just Swedes) should be able to contribute
and ask questions about indie music. There is some other new stuff at the
new Benno website too. Like I said - if you havent already checked it out,
do it now! (And no, I have not been asked to do this kind of marketing, I
assure you that it is by my own free will ;)

I'll have a look see at least. As I haven't been able to send out the
damn "Eggstone" comp tape yet, I might as well start with that one.

Heh yeah, you're right on the money - the new "reviews area" is really
taking up all my time at the moment (and trying to stay away from
the smashing "Die By The Sword" game isn't easy either ;)). But I can
at least contact the labels / bands on this last tape and see what happens.
If they don't go for it - I'll remove them from the compilation and try
with another band/label. I'll get back to the list when something happens.

I will do my best at least - my tape deck is in shreds at the moment,
but a friend (who was equally stunned at the Linkoping gig) has promised
to set a timer on his deck ... Gulp! Hopefully someone else will record
it too?

I got a 7" by them from a friend at Southern, and must say they sound quite
