And tell you about the Umea Open Festival instead. For starters, I've got to say that I was quite impressed when I attended a meeting for volunteers the day before the festival started. Impressed with how young and unbureaucratic the organizers seemed, and yet how spontaneously they seemed to organize themselves into various functions, bringing together organizations like the Red Cross and 'generation without violence' (or something to that effect). ...but then again, who thought up those lousy wristbands which were fastened on our wrists on the first night but couldn't be removed until the end of the second night. i felt like cattle. (or was that the idea? Umea being a rather vegan town and all...) the music: Doktor Kosmos - just about the best show of the weekend. which was kinda lame as it was the first thing i saw, and i missed about half of the set since the festival workers weren't very efficient at getting people in the doors the first night. but what i saw of the doktor's set, which was his rock-opera 'Stjarnjerry' in fact, was great. i couldn't understand much, but the music was good - alternately quiet and loud, simple but dynamic. and theatrical. with nice use of simple props, a few nice lighting tricks, a couple projector screens. a very nice home-baked theatrical feel. quirky. Ward J & Loosegoats - i've heard the most recent Ward J album, and the music is quite nice, but the vocal style isn't my cup of tea. i think mr. J was suffering a bit from a cold at this show, and his voice really didn't project well, but in this case the music just seemed that much better. by which i mean to say that it was quite nice. i'm not familiar with the loosegoats, but i heard that they were supposed to be much noisier under normal circumstances, no? not on this night, as everything was accoustic, the band quite large, and the melodies (see my comments about the Ward J album above) good. a good band to warm up on. the Bear Quartet - i was really looking forward to this one. alas. they were way too rock & roll for my tastes on stage, much more so than on the records i've heard. Jari and the singer seemed to be totally drunk as the show started. jari tottering around, seeming not to want to look at the audience or at the rest of the band, and the singer didn't even sound like the same singer until a good 3 or 4 songs into the set when my mate in the audience and i both got the idea that he was beginning to sober up somewhat. to add to our irritation with alcohol use, there were some hockey player types just behind us in the front doing their best pogo-stick impressions and generally being annoying. i could go on wondering about whether so many scandinavians get so ugly when they drink because of the strict alcohol laws here, or if the laws keep things from being worse, but to get back to the topic at hand, my friend and i decided after not very much socializing with hockey types that it was time to retire to the bar upstairs in the balcony. from where, i must say, the vocals were definitely sounding more and more like the bear quartet. but the damage was already done and so we left early and went to the large hall to check out Heed. I heard from Jari later in the night that TBQ show had gone down the drain with technical problems after I left. Heed - seemed to be hugely popular (despite, i was told, not having a record deal...does that mean no records?). the thing about Heed was that there were so many of them, including a string section, that I was spellbound waiting to see what would happen as soon as everyone started playing (there was a nice build-up with tapes preceding this moment). and pretty much as soon as they all started playing the spell was broken and my friend and I stepped out to see what else there was to hear. Somewhere in here I also saw a bit of the Weeping Willows (failed to excite me), some house band who kinda amused me when both of the guys would bob up and down over their gadgets, looking like a pair of insects, and Hab, who actually sounded really good but who barely got an audience at all (but those who were there seemed to be into it). also caught the opening of the Refused's set. which just goes to show how glam hardcore can get. the singer has his moves, jumps and microphone tricks down. and when the whole band attacks at once, it's quite impressive. though i found that music this loud and racous doesn't stay that way for long. meaning that if you only play loud like this, the loudness loses all of its dynamicism very fast. (though i can only admire the way the band has inspired veganism and non-violence throughout the town, and apparently scared the hell out of all the old educators as well...) Night two: Grandtone music - decent emotional rock, i thought it was alright, and i heard a lot of people raving about it, but i really didn't think it was anything too special. Honey is Cool - this is the sort of music i wouldn't go near at home. macho rock and roll stuff, despite the female singer. but that's the strange thing - i often find that the things i will enjoy live are very different from what i like on record. and i found this ok. especially as they managed to keep things sounding fairly dynamic, in contrast to a band like the Refused. i can't say much of anything more about the music that is of any use to anyone (and probably most of the scandie listmembers know far more about Honey is Cool than I do anyways), because the thing that made the greatest impression on me was how badly they dressed. I thought the singer looked like Pat Benetar in her cheetah print spandex tights... Teenage Fanclub - seemed like genuinely nice lads. enough said. Komeda - as if i needed any convincing, all doubts about komeda disintegrated towards the end of the first number, 'frolic' from 2nd album, when Mattias cut loose with what seemed to be a scat solo through some kind of filter. i was later informed that it actually was a guitar solo using a 'mouth box' - something like a wah-wah pedal which is operated by mouth. in case you are wondering if i liked it: i was delighted. the rest of the concert was embarassingly good. embarassing because i found myself shuffling around and dancing about, and though there were quite a few girls doing the same, i think that i was the only boy so afflicted? devil made me do it. or maybe it's just the thing for tunes in 3/4 that i inherited from granddad. not that all the tunes were in 3/4, but komeda's rhythms always seem a bit off-kilter, and that suits me fine. while komeda have been one of my favorite groups since about 15 seconds after the first time Pop pa Svenska went on my CD player, i have to admit that, having seen them in LA in 1996, i was looking forward to seeing the Bear Quartet and Doktor Kosmos much more when the festival started. but this weekend's Komeda performance more than made up for all the disappointments of the weekend. and it was far far better than the show in LA. this time around the band were joined by a string section (first time ever, i believe?), as well as by Dr. Kosmos on keys and Helena of NONS on backing vocals. the gig was also notable in that it was the first appearance of their new drummer, whose name i didn't catch, but i understood was recruited from local band Heed. he wore a suit and seemed quite up to the task. damn fine, in fact. Jonas (the original drummer) watched in the audience and seemed to approve of it all. word has it that he has only retired from public performances, but will continue to compose etc. what else to say? marcus (bass) and the aforementioned mattias were both in fine form, knocking out their ecclectic rhythms and even executing a few funky bits of choreography from time to time. lena danced around, smiled nicely, and even sang though a vocoder on several of the new pieces. new pieces in fact making up most of the show. aside from frolic, the two singles and one other track from the 2nd album, everything they played came from the new album, i think. highlights of the show would definitely include 'a simple formality,' with its hybrid of mellow machine drums and not so mellow real drums - especially the wonderful drum breaks which follow the chorus. a chorus so wonderfully minimalistic that it just seems to grow and grow, getting richer and richer, the vocoder vocals becoming just another instrument in the mix. my friend (whose computer i'm typing this on) tells me that the album version blends Friend's version of the song with Komeda's...which has me a little confused, but then, i only have one 12" by Friend (who used to be the Seashells drummer, by the way). about the new Komeda album (i've been off the list so i don't know if we've been discussing it)...i've been enjoying it all week, and it seems a bit richer and less stripped down than the Genius of... was. A bit more of the drama and cinematic sweep which made Pop pa Svenska so special for me. after the komeda show, there really wasn't anything left to do but hit the bar. what can you see after something that good? we tried to make the rounds in the big complex, but it quickly became apparent to Stefan Pillow and me that the thing to do was head off to Nils' and try out his absinthe.... signing off, alexander xander@sirius.com ps. i'll be in stockholm starting tomorrow night. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Apr 1998 02:39:14 +0200 From: Erik Soderstrom Subject: [NEWS] More Sin's News This Week [08-Apr-98] ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie News SiNews 08-Apr-98 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. But now (yet unconfirmed) rumors say they may still be able to keep Fly as their name. Sometimes I wish people would consider what they're doing to those of us trying to keep up! ;-) Coo heads back into the studio - ---------------------------- Dreamy guitar manglers Coo from Finland (who Scandinavian Indie has a contest with this month - don't forget to check it out) are on their way back to the studio this month to record some totally new stuff. Their second demo which was recorded not long ago will hit record companies, labels and radio stations at the beginning of next month. Doktor Kosmos Stjarnjerry on the radio -------------------------------------- Doktor Kosmos (NONS) and the rock opera "Stjarnjerry" which you have read about here several times before, and which safely can be said to be a success, is now re-broadcasted twice, in the middle of the night, in its radio version on Swedish National Radio! Channels P3 and P4 are the ones to watch and the program to tune in on April 13th and 14th - between 03.03 - 04.00 (yup, that's _am_) is "Frispel". The show's homepage, where you can find more info about it all can be found at http://www.sr.se/p3/program/frispel Leslies to release a 7" in the US --------------------------------- Swedish breeze popsters Leslies found out there's a US band with the same name this week, when asked if they were the ones playing in Washington D.C. Tony Ivarsson (vocals) comments: - I'll be damned. We had no idea. Unfortunately our name is only registered in Sweden, so we can't do anything about it. We do have a paper saying we were first with the name though. It'll be even more interesting when we release a 7" single in the US in June - on a small label I can't give you the name of yet... gusGus recording their new album - ------------------------------ GusGus (4AD) from Iceland have been busy setting up their new studio in Reykjavik, and now they are working hard on their second album which is due out in september. The weekend of June 5-6 should be a special one in Iceland as Gusgus is putting on a festival where a whole bunch of Icelandic bands will be playing and gusGus will unveil their new record at the event. Sobsister added to the P3 Playlist ---------------------------------- Really small label Absurd Records' own Barb Wire (tm) pop band Sobsister will be added to the Swedish National Radio playlist on tuesday. The song qualified is the number 7 on their debut album "Schlaraffenland" released saturday last week. And what is number 7 then you ask? It's the gorgeous 'Thursday Knight Mr Cool'! Worth noting is also that their pre-album single "Wardrobe" was picked up by the national radio two days after its release. At the moment, they are touring (and yes, they will come to Linkoping! - sorry about the local nationalism there ;)) Their current tour dates are as follows: 8/4 Vaxjo, 9/4 Eskilstuna, 17/4 Malmo, 25/4 Emmaboda, and 28/5 Linkoping (full tour date info on the Sin site - Gig Related). Starboy Recordings has moved + website -------------------------------------- Stockholm based record label Starboy Recordings (Robot, Freinds, Barusta) has moved from S:t Eriksplan to the southern parts of the city and into the same building as the Luger booking agency, record label Startracks, web entertainment company Moondog and venue Fritz's Corner. The new contact information is as follows: Visiting address: Hogabergsgatan 33, 2tr. Phone 1: +46-(0)8-6152950 (Hansi - A&R, promotion), Phone 2: +46-(0)8-6152960 (Johan & Linda - Ads, production, economy), Fax: +46-(0)8-7145065. Their mailing address is still the same as before on the other hand (see the Sin site - Record Labels). Starboy Recordings' website was also finished last week - and it is designed by none other than list member Elin! Check it out at: http://www.starboy.se Arvika Festival Update ---------------------- The Arvika Festival (10-11 July in Arvika, Sweden) had some trouble with their release list to which people managed to send their personal greetings this week due to a bad configuration, but quickly repaired the damage and added Caesar's Palace (S) to their line-up (full info on the Sin site - Festivals). Emmaboda Festival Update ------------------------ Sweden's most down to earth summer music festival Emmaboda (7-8 August in Emmaboda, Sweden) have added a bunch of great names to their line-up. Here are the new names straight from the organizers (full info at the Sin site - Festivals): Bad Cash Quartet (S), Easy (Fly) (S), Komeda (S), Mazarine Street (S), Polythene (S). Spiritualized and gusGus to Hultsfred Festival ---------------------------------------------- A new release of names added to the line-up from the Hultsfred 11-13 June in Hultsfred, Sweden) Festival came in today - where Spiritualized (UK), gusGus (IS) along with the previously reported (now official) Rakim (US) are the big guns. Now how does that sound? Well, like > Motorpsycho probably. ;-) > > //Erik Who are Motorpsycho? Motorpsycho is what you probably would call an experimental rock/pop/ metal(at least they used to do some metalsongs)/prog-band. Because of their experimentalism, progressiveness or whatever you might call it, their music is not simply to classify or describe. There's only one way to find it out really: buy a motorpsycho-record and rock!. If it weren't for the fact that there is a small but faithful market for things bold and original, you might even say that Motorpsycho lacks commercial potential -- not that they delibaretely avoid it. They would love to sell *lots* of records and get their music out to the people, but they won't change the music for it. They now live at Svartlamoen in Trondheim, Norway. The new songs were kind of different, so I guess that's why you thought it didn't think it sounded like it was the same guy as on the records. And well, I don't remember Jari ever being especially interested in l ooking at the audience drunk or not. It seems like we both failed to mention that a guy from Blissful was playing keyboards, which was pretty nice. About the alcohol, my impression was quite the opposite, I thought it was consumed at a quite moderate level. At the outdoors festivals in the summer you usually see a lot of kids puking and a few that have passed out, I saw nothing of that here. I guess the guys who insisted on singing "I'm gonna have the time of my life, yes I will" over and over again between every song were kind of annoying though. And to be honest, I prefer people who dance than boring indiefags who just stand with their arms crossed, or even worse, sit down when the band plays. Let the music set you free, for christs sake! SUREDO seems to be quite non-existing as a band nowadays. According to the inlay card on the "Singles & Vinyls" sampler from Ceilidh Productions (the SUREDO song "Sonic atmosphere" is on that sampler) two of the members departed from the band soon after the release of their album "Whatahandsomeface" (released in 1993, also on Ceilidh) and that the members has been involved in other projects since. I know that two of the members are now in a band called COACH BOB (unless if something has happened to them lately which I do not know about). They sound pretty similar to SUREDO, I think. I do not know what the other members are doing, but perhaps Erik can give some more info about the former SUREDO members?
