;-) Well, something like that I guess. But if we are to concentrate on the
good ones, i.e. those I would recommend to people visiting this place, the
map would only consist of a dot on Platensgatan - at Get Back Records. Lots
of Cd:s, both new and second-hand, but not too much vinyl. Nice selection
of music and very nice selection of people working there, too. I think
Mattias Ahlen of CHICKENPOX still works there, even if I have not seen him
there lately. And there is one guy, working there, who actually was a
musician at Ulf Lundells first gig ever outside Stockholm ;-).
There is a store somewhere who sells a lot of old 70s and 80s hard rock
stuff and they have a lot of vinyl, I think, but I have never been there
myself.

Exactly. But just to be anal about it, one should include the lot - even
the Ahlens record department and the two (or are there three now?) Sound
de Light stores. (if you haven't checked out their website yet -
http://www.sounddelight.se - don't.. it's just so disfunctional you'll
get a headache!). Ha!

I think they have been on tour, which would explain his absense. But it's
kind of funny to always see there's a Chickenpox record clearly visible to
everyone going into the store. ;)

Me neither, but it's just 100-200m away from Get Back so I'd include it
on the Platensgatan map...

You know, they actually had a lengthy article in one of them "serious"
Swedish computer magazines (like "Datavarlden" or something) about
marketing on the web in relation to "bargain search agents" - I have
the copy at work, so I'll check it out again tomorrow. But I believe
those listed there were also "US only".
But these "agents" are probably the "next big thing". There's something
going on at http://www.identify.com which is configurable enough to
search in selected countries, though from what I understand, companies
to be searched still has to be hard coded. :-/

Just checked the web pages, and the playlist. That's exactly something
I've hoped to hear on the radio you know. But not just for a couple
of hours a few days of the week in one city, but 24 hours _all over
the country_ (or even better, world wide, but then we're talking
the Internet...) Perhaps that's the way? Do a show on the net?

A chance to see tortoise live is definitelly a reason to get excited.
Their show at NYC's Irving Plaza last year was easily one of the best
shows I've been to in years...

They play instrumental music. Kind of kraut-ish in a way maybe. Very
beautiful and dreamy. Still the music can be quite groovy.

Yeah, it's instrumental music with bits of samples and keyboard noise,
xylophones, great drums & bass... Generally they can be both
spacey and ambient one minute and very straightahead and driving the next
minute. Seeing them live isn't really like going to see a normal show as
much as it is sitting in on a really amazing jam session. Not a whole lot
of audience interaction, I guess, but it's still amazing.
To give you an example of the kindof stuff they do live: When I saw them
they finished playing their last song and people went nuts. There was
just tons of applause. But after a while, I noticed that the applause was
still going even though nobody was still applauding. Basically they'd
sampled our applause and looped it, and when they came back to do an
encore, they turned that sample into the basis of the beat for the next
song. Kinda made me go "wow."
Anyway, give it a shot. IT's the kindof stuff that some people go nuts
over and other people just find irritating. It's kindof a toss-up...

I wasn't that impressed when I saw them here in Oxford last year, although
most people seem to rave about them live. They were very enthusiastic --
sort of like Ben Folds Five on drugs -- but the actual music didn't do much
for me.
I'm not much good at describing music either, but I guess it's got elements
of modern jazz (the Miles Davis / John Coltrane / Ornette Coleman kind of
thing) in it.

saw them last year and found them a bit boring to be honest, only song
I can remember is that excellent Galapagos, which is the only Tortoise
song with a real melody, the rest just isn't that memorable (that's my
opinion of course).
what I do like is Mogwai. and the tour list mentioned one date in Scan-
dinavia but according to their own list they will do some more gigs, but
why oh why won't they come to Gothenburg ?? it's not that there are too
much bands coming here is it ?? 'cause if it is someone please tell me
as far as I know there seems to be nothing happening here in the near
future...

Friends ... as already said, I tried the Skivhugget's mailorder, and it
said already, that the CD's are on their way to my home! So, it really
seems to work well ... so I've at least got "Bob Hund 2" on CD in a few
days, and hardly try to finish my work mid-next week, to go for them in
Aalborg! Anyone knows any other dates in northern Denmark between next
Thursday and saturday?

"Bob Hund 1" is their first ep and "Bob Hund 2" should be their first
full-length album. At least those are the titles used in a couple of other
mailorder catalogs I have.

them on the ZTV news text-tv pages last night. They have had some troubles
with too many customers!! They have been drowned in orders from lots of
people and, therefore, they have not been able to serve everyone. They made
some promise that things would work better in the future.

This message is directed towards those perverts who read Expressen Fredag
(I am one of those, I must confess) and who believe everything they read (I
am certainly not one of those).
Perhaps hanging Mr Nunstedt is to stretch it a bit too far, I am still a
quite peaceful person. But if someone close to him reads this (I guess he
dont himself), could you please tell him that if he does not have a fucking
clue about what he is doing then he should do something else instead. Today
he reviews the latest album from CARPET PEOPLE - "Assemble & plug" and he
calls them talented and gives it a good review. So far everything is OK by
me. But he calls them CARPE WADE instead of CARPET PEOPLE! Not just once,
but consistently throughout the whole review. And I honestly think that
someone who cares about this type of music should:
a) recognize the difference between CARPET PEOPLEs down-sized lo-fi sound
and CARPE WADEs "the louder and noisier it gets the better it is"-power pop
b) be very surprised if CARPE WADE released a record on NONS records
instead of A Westside Fabrication
c) etc. etc. (I could probably write a lot of notes about that he should
know which people are in which bands and so on, but that would probably
last for a whole digest).
Besides, I thought that someone who writes in Swedish should be able to
read in Swedish too, but obviously those lines, in the press-release (which
I guess he should have received) about Emil Odling being a member of CARPET
PEOPLE were too incomprehensible for him, since he claims that CARPET
PEOPLE, oh sorry - he claims that CARPE WADE has three members (and that is
not correct neither concerning CARPET PEOPLE nor CARPE WADE).
I know that if we were to bring up every fault in this paper and their
competitor we would do nothing else, but this really upset me!

um... I just heard the new Orup song on the radio... "jag kommer
over dig". How do you translate that one? "I'll come all over
you"? :)
Anyways, for some reason I was looking in the latest issue of
Damernas Varld (a Swedish women's magazine with pictures of a
lot of hungry models) and they have a music-page written by
Kristina Adolfsson and she'd listed her "favourites right now"
and they were: Jonas Knutsson, Mono, Roachford and Grand Tone
Music and here's what she wrote about the latter:
"Winter-music for burning candles and thoughts about Norrland
(that's the upper part of Sweden). Discreet Swedish band
with nice details such as steelguitar. The singer has the same
bright Swedish tone as the girl in Ace of Base."
Uh.. that was a crappy translation but I'm sick and can't
think alright. Anyways, I haven't heard Grand Tone Music
yet (well I saw them live in Emmaboda but wasn't in the mood
for that kind of music at the moment), even though Erik
mail me every time they're on the radio :) but that wasn't
a very nice thing to write, was it?
Another thing: will record stores be the first "real" stores
to get put out of business because of internet-shopping? Of
course we'll still have "real" stores in some way in the
future but... will they only carry top 20? I used to order a
lot of stuff at the local dealer but nowadays I never do, it's
so much easier, cheaper and faster to order it from one of
the net stores. And I can sit at home and listen to excerpts
from the albums before I buy them, Real Audio's getting better
every month. Actually I feel a little guilty about not supporting
the local store anymore... I work in a furniture store, what if
people started to buy all their furniture over the net? Well,
we still have something more to offer our customers - the
possibility to try the furniture before buying it. And, well,
to see a picture of a sofa isn't really the same thing as
seeing the real thing. Can real record stores really compete
with the internet ones? Do we care?

Have you ever thought that words like this can hurt?! I used to work at
Expressen Fredag (surprise!) and maybe AN writes like an idiot, and maybe
he has what we in sweden call "noll koll", but I, for one, feel uneasy
reading these lines...
We're talking about real life people here, not some DJ in a Smiths
song...

Hehe, seems like i touched someone's weak spot here. Sorry, but I have
absolutely no respect for the people who work at/for Aftonbladet and
Expressen. They've carried creative journalism a wee bit to far, in my
not so humble opinion. And anyway, are you gonna tell me that you've
never read a review that made you seriously pissed off?
