Yes, it's that time... xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Scandinavian Indie's Robot Contest ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ------------------------------------------------- NOTE ANSWERS must be sent to: chief@lysator.liu.se NOTE ------------------------------------------------- Starboy Recordings and Scandinavian Indie presents the robot contest! Here's what you need to know and what to do. Information ^^^^^^^^^^^ The contest actually calls for a bit of information, and you're the supplier. You may of course know everything about robot already, and then you don't need to look any further. But in case you need to refresh your memory somewhat, or if robot is new to you, the following links will hopefully help you out. I say hopefully because all of the outside ones were under construction when last checked... You know, it isn't easy being a contest holder! * Starboy Recordings Homepage - http://www.starboy.se This is the label the band is signed to. Last time I checked it was still under construction, but that has probably changed when you check it out now. * Robot Fan page - http://www.algonet.se/~elin/robot/ Probably the most energetic, best looking and planned robot site on the net. If the rest of the promised information is added, this will be a killer. That is to say there's some information here now and more to come. * Starboy Recordings Article - http://www.svd.se/svd/city/musik/starboy.html Swedish morning paper Svenska Dagbladet ran an article about the label on May 2nd last year. Together with the article you can find separate articles about three of the bands on the label, and yes, robot is one of them. Sadly, everything is only available in Swedish. * Scan-Indie Digest Archive - http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/sid.html Everything ever posted since 1994 to the Scandinavian Indie Mailing List! What you must do! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Once again we're letting you off with one brain-dazzling, totally ridiculously easy question. Yes, you heard me. One simple question. You're asking yourself to what lengths these nice people at Scandinavian Indie go to give you such fabulous opportunities? Well, that's just the way it is, and yes, we are that nice. :-) All answers received before February 1st, 1998 will be placed on a damp cloth, and we'll dry 3 (three) lucky winners from it. All winners will, as usual, be presented on the Scandinavian Indie Contest pages about ten days after the contest closes. The winners are of course contacted through e-mail as well. ------------------------------------------------- NOTE ANSWERS must be sent to: chief@lysator.liu.se NOTE ------------------------------------------------- What you can win! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Three winners will receive a copy of robot's fantastic debut album "Automagic" which contains twelve songs to fall in love with (or jump around to, depending on your state of mind at the time...) Good Luck! Last date to send in your answer: February 1st, 1998 QUESTION: Who produced robot's video to the song "Members Of The Stars" ? (for a hint, check out the contest page on Scandinavian Indie web) (http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/scan.html [Contests]) Answer : My Full Name : Street Address : Zip-Code & City : Country : E-mail address : Feel free to leave a message to robot if you like: __________________________________________________ *** Please note that none of the information you send in will be *** *** spread or disclosed to anyone anywhere ever. Nonono... it's not ready... yet... there's nothing there... almost... and you're not really supposed to be able to see it before it's done... but ok... you've already got the address. Elin ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Jan 1998 19:57:12 +0100 From: Micke Rehnstrom Subject: Ky + Durango 95 demo interviews Perhaps I am naive but I hope there are others, than I, who are interested in bands without record deals. Therefore - here is another report from the Swedish demo tape world. Two quite different bands - KY and DURANGO 95. KY are Bjarne Melin and Cecilia von Strokirch. The music - female vocals floating upon a bed of drum machine beats and dreamy synthetic sounds. Which means that we are in the same soundscape as, for example, "Unfinished sympathy" by MASSIVE ATTACK, "Gorecki" by LAMB and "Walking wounded" by EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL. "Sneaking" sounds much like the EBTG song, a contrabass giving it a jazzy feel which is reinforced by Cecilias way of singing (reminding of the female vocals on Trickys tunes). "At the table" features more up-tempo beats and "Dyin" is probably best described as trip-hop. Perhaps not innovative but dreamy and beautiful. Perhaps Cecilias voice is not always very "clean" but - and I have said this before - the fact that I mention MASSIVE ATTACK as a comparison means that I like this tape a lot! The only common denominator between KY and DURANGO 95 is, I guess, Mattias Beijmo. He has been recording engineer for both tapes and he is also a member of the latter band. In this band we also find former members of TADPOLE and CHARTA 77 (!). I understand that record companies have already shown an interest in them (anyone knows if anything more has happened?). But unfortunately their "noFo" demo is not as interesting as the line-up. We are talking pop-rock with hard-edged guitars and with bitter and somewhat cynical lyrics. A bit too much "standard" IMO. And both "Polarity" and "Hard fall" sounds like something that SOULS made better on "Bird, fish or inbetween". And they should try to avoid to sound like SOULS as long as Malin Lindhs voice lacks the "cute kitten turns into furious lion" abilities of Cecilia Nordlunds voice. But tunes like "Lovestory of the century part 4" and "The DJ saved my life" proves that there is competence to write desperate pop/rock tunes in this band and that it might be something to study closer in the future. Hi, my scandinavian friends! I wanna wish you all the best for 1998! And, that's how I am, I got a question! Our - the german - news just sent a short message about the troubles with Nazis near Stockholm! Any of you got further information? Was it a concert? Which band? And so on! But, btw, I'm lucky to see, that the swedish-police does a little more than it would've been done in germany ... just my thoughts! Reiner ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Jan 1998 17:54:35 +0000 From: "johanna.hillgren" Subject: Kask new project Hello everyone and a very happy new year! Here in Gothenburg everything is alright and I hope all you people out there have settled after all Chrstmas ham, schnaps and Champagne. Anyway, what I wanted to tell you is that I've got news about Janne Kask, the guy who left popsters Brainpool after a couple of very successful years. After that there's been a lot of hush-hush about he's up to now and for those who are interested (not too many, perhaps :-)) I can tell that he's started a new project, Thirteen. I heard the demo today, containing six or seven songs and it sounded quite alright to me. Very poppy, not unlike Brainpool when they were not too hysterical, and the vocal harmonies reminds me of The Beach Boys. So Janne Kask is back and most certainly he will soon have landed a fat record deal and will be coming up in an Okej-mag near you soon. Bye for now, Daniel (of course listening to Fidgets new demos. I'm in the bleeding band, so I have to listen ;-)) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Jan 1998 01:45:51 +0100 From: Erik Soderstrom Subject: Tour List I (Skrikhult BA) [06-Jan-98] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie COMPLETE Skrikhult Tour List Scandinavian Indie January 6th, 1998 by Erik Soderstrom ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SCANDINAVIAN: CANDYSUCK (S) - StarTracks / House of Kicks 31/1 Ockelbo Gotan EDGE OF SANITY (S) - Black Mark / House of Kicks 22/2 Oslo Mars (N) 27/2 Goteborg Underground 28/2 Hassleholm Perrong 23 28/3 Kristianstad T B A MATS / MORGAN BAND (S) - UAE / Border 14/2 Goteborg Nefertiti 20/2 Vasteras Village 21/2 Hallsberg Stinsen MAZARINE STREET (S) - Fine Tone / MD 15/1 Linkoping Herrgar'n 28/1 Goteborg Pusterviksteatern 29/1 Lund Smalands Nation 30/1 Malmo KB SPEAKER BITE ME (DK) - Flowershop / Border 29/1 Lund Mejeriet ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NON-SCANDINAVIAN: U.D.O (DE) - Gun Rec. / House of Kicks + LIONS SHARE (S) Centuary Media / House of Kicks (w/Sound Swing Management) 28/1 Goteborg Valand 29/1 Vasteras Extremes 30/1 Uppsala Sten Sture 31/1 Eskilstuna Josefs Bar 1/2 Norrkoping Kammaren 2/2 Hono Trubaduren 3/2 Malmo KB 4/2 Stockholm T B A 6/2 Helsingfors Tavastia (SF) 7/2 Tampere Tulliclub (SF) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Skrikhult Production Tour List Updates are posted now and then ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 1998 02:07:22 +0100 (MET) From: Karl Morten Dahl Subject: New Motorpsycho album Europe's finest band will release a triple lp/double cd in february. Yeah, I'm on the Stina mailing list, and the news on there is that it will be an album of covertunes....a bit of a dissapointment, but anything by Stina is still something to be excited about. Her friend Svante says it will be released internationally in the beg. of April, so who knows about the date....there is also an official Stina website in the works.. Recorded real low-fi (Kitchen/Bath room) but that doesn't mean the sound is bad, quite the reverse. You can hear Mike's very English accent, almost like another Billy Childish playing everything from Dick Dale to the Sex Pistols. limited to only 300 ex. Label says: 26 doses of real raw garage, punk, rock'n'roll from Tensta (Swedish suburb) with an attitude garanted to piss of the squares, Cd only release 300 ex. ############### Hard On Records The Pricks - Shoot you in the Head +8 (7") (Hard on-001) This is what the press said about the record: ("press play on tape" was released in the spring and the follow up is already here-9 track 7", "Shoot you in the Head" ep, and its without doubt that this band will go far. Their naïve, agressive, speed punk rock is brilliant. They have strong will-power and enthusiasm which makes me speechless. Very Good. (Mikael Sorling. Close Up Magazine Jan/Feb 98) (Fast Straightforward bouncy hardcoresque music, complete with screaming vocals and breakdowns, that really grabs your attention. with song titles like "Retard Ronnie", "Shoot you in the head" and "Fuck face" this Swedish band seems mean and pissed off, but actually their music is a bit more upbeat than their song titles, not half bad. (HD) MRR #176 January 98) ############ Frank Records Electric Frankenstien vs The Hellacopters (7") (Frank Records) (Reissue) I don't think I need to say too much about this record, except in was sold out within weeks last time around. Frank Records has a new web site - check it out, the address can be found on our site. ######### Ken Rock Henry Fiats Open Sore - Satans Boy (7") (Ken-004) One of the latest great bands to have a single released on Ken Rock Records, After appearing on The Swedish Sins Album, (one of the best tracks on the comp) someone has started a fan club for them in NY. Expecting some great things from them 1998. Check out the great cover: http.www.beluga.a.se/kenrock ############### Bad Afro Records The Two latest releases from Bad Afro Records, Submerged - Mr. Blues b/w Kool Candy Trance (7") (FRO-008) We may be garage punk whores here at Bad Afro Manor, but this young Finnish outfit made us expand our horizon. Hailing from the Finnish noise capital, Oulu, Submerged hang out with the Bad Vugum recording posse like Radiopuhelimet and Sweetheart. Strange, noisy rock with that special Finnish weirdness that spells originality. It's difficult to put words on Submerged. Sonic Youth beatin' up Helmet in Oulu is a weak attempt. 500 copies on black vinyl. The Flaming sideburns - Get Down Or Get Out! (7") (FRO-007) The new garage sensation from Helsinki, Finland. Members of Teenage Kicks, Isebel's Pain, Jack Meatbeat and the Underground Society and Lowdown Shakin' Chills join hands in this supergroup. This is only their 2nd 7", but the amazing potential is obvious. Fucking great songs (two originals - "Crashing Down" and "La Bruta" and a cover of "Dirty Robber" by The Wailers - made famous by The Sonics) with a hip swayin' beat that doesn't follow the beaten path of a garage song. Think early Kinks and Billy Childish related stuff in Helsinki and you are not even close. The sombrero wearing Flaming Sideburns have that extra twist that makes loud rock'n'roll so fucking great. ################### Yesterday Girl Records Various Artists - Pop under the Surface vol 1 (CD) Yesterday Girl Records a great pop compliation that we thought we should help bring to the surface. ( pop is my life. a three minute popsong can make me feel happy for months. A great CD can make me happy for years. Release early April, as Svante stated.
