This time it is a demo cassette. A while ago Erik reviewed a demo by Vimmerby-based BOB (THE BOBBY EWING FAMILY) (yes, that is their name) and I became interested. I managed to get hold of their second demo "The birth of mosaic poetry/philosophy" which was OK but with a terrible sound quality. Aware of that they went to Linkoping to record their third demo "Black blood of karma snail" in a real studio and with a real sound technician/producer (Gertz Sjoberg). And the result is quite good, both musically and when it comes to sound quality. As you can see on the titles of their demos, we are not talking 'chewing gum' texts/music here. The same goes for the song titles - "Infinite lost at word sea", "The psalm of the kamikaze computer" etc - and the texts. In fact, I have stopped trying to understand what they are singing about but I can tell you that it does sound beautiful when Johann Krantz and Rebecka Bond sings all those strange words. And I can also tell you that it is _dark_. NIRVANA is the most obvious reference but we are not talking "Teen spirit", but rather "Polly" and "Something in the way" as they would have sounded with some guitar explosions added to them. As I said, it is dark, beautiful and suggestive. One weakness is, perhaps, the predictability: all songs are built up in the same way. At first the sound is fragile, Johanns light voice accompanied only by a quiet guitar and a keyboard but then - in the chorus - the already-mentioned explosions come. But I can stand that, and I can stand that this is really nothing new. Perhaps it is because I always feel great sympathy for people singing about the dark sides of life (well, I think that is what they are singing about) and I also think that songs like "In the shadow of" and "Psalm of the kamikaze computer" are good enough to be recorded 'for real'. If this sounds interesting I reckon you can ask about the demo or other things about the band by mailing Johann Krantz directly at: bobfanmail@hotmail.com /Micke ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Sep 1997 00:26:23 +0200 (MET DST) From: Erik Soderstrom Subject: Sin's Music on the Radio [22-Sep-97] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie MUSIC ON THE RADIO Scandinavian Indie September 22 -> 25, 1997 by Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se) Day Date Artist Recorded --- ----- -------------------------------------- --------------------------- Mon 22/9 Ibens Denmark, Roskilde Jul-97 Tue 23/9 Otis Grand & Al's Bluesband M|nster}s, Blues 31-May-97 Wed 24/9 Fleshquartet & N}id, Urban Dance Squad Hultsfred, Festival Jun-97 Thu 25/9 Biohazard Arvika, Festival 12-Jul-97 This list covers the Swedish National Channel P3's "Live" - at 21.03-22.00 or 18.03-19.00 where marked with a '*'. My favorite bands are Cardigans, Popsicle, Bob Hund, Kent, Cloudberry Jam, among others. I desperately want to see if anyone owns the CD by Popsicle "Power Ballads EP". I have been trying to get a hold of this forever. thanks Jason http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Quad/2567 Homepage dedicated to the Cardigans ---------------------------- Date: Sat, 27 Sep 1997 20:05:55 +0200 (MET DST) From: Micke Rehnstrom Subject: Chickenpox review It has been so quiet here lately so I am almost beginning to wonder if we perhaps should have that "Best of the year" vote already now, just to make things happen :-). While you reconsider that suggestion I can give you another report from Herrgarn in Linkoping. CHICKENPOX, from Linkoping, are celebrating their 5th anniversary as a band this autumn. They are just about to start recording their second full-length album (the first one was produced by Michael Blair!). They may not be the best band in town but when it comes to live performances things are different. Perhaps you understand this if I tell you that the key word is _ska_. Because ska music (once again: more "traditional" than "punk") is what they play. I guess it is really no use to try to describe their sound in a more precise manner, their music does not vary very much from how most ska bands sound. And, once again, as for most other ska bands (IMO, of course, someone else might have a different opinion) the music may not be very exciting when you hear it coming from a stereo. But (again, as most ska bands) they are one of those bands that can make you go home, from a concert, suffering from aching feet (because of all the dancing) and a huge smile all over your face. This was exactly the case last thursday (though they did not fall through the stage floor this time. They did it the last time they were at Herrgarn). Most people in the audience enjoyed it and so did I. Also, it has to be said that most people who see CHICKENPOX perform live will probably only recognize one of the members afterwards. Mattias Ahlen, the vocalist, is one of those guys that it is impossible to turn away the eyes from when he is on stage. He really does a whole lot of work during their gigs. Either he is singing (which he does quite well), dancing, jumping around, stealing bottles of water from his fellows or just acting crazy in general, he is certainly a guy who adds something extra to an already good concert. Go see them, if you get a chance. If you wanna know more about this band you can check out: http://www.burningheart.com/chickenpox/html/home.html Up next week (october 2nd) at Herrgarn are emocore gods SAMIAM (US), supported by SHADES APART (US) /Micke, kinda wondering if "Be here now" by OASIS is not just a muzak compilation of their first two albums? -------------------------------- Date: Sun, 28 Sep 1997 19:52:44 +0200 (MET DST) From: Micke Rehnstrom Subject: Mouth?? It just crossed my mind: Does anyone know if the swedish band MOUTH does still exist? It was almost a year since I heard anything about them. I know that they were sacked from their record company and that they released a demo which was, in fact, better than their album. They had changed their sound, the tunes were rather sad, almost heart-breaking. But after that - nothing!! Anyone? /Micke, who has finally managed to get hold of "Moby dick" (not the book, though) ----------------------------- Date: Sun, 28 Sep 1997 22:39:13 +0200 From: Henrik Engstroem Subject: Re: Mouth?? > It just crossed my mind: Does anyone know if the swedish band MOUTH does > still exist? It was almost a year since I heard anything about them. Hm, didn't they all move to NYC to continue their odyssey as _real_ rock stars, since the Swedish scene was way too small for Mouth? A good band, with a crappy attitude unfortunately. I've not heard anything from them since their last album failed to sell and they left the country. Does anyone spot a connection there? /Henrik (finally on the list as a real subscriber - Hello everyone!) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Sep 1997 22:36:28 PDT From: "Tina Andersson" Subject: Trading CDs I have some CDs: Freinds Surreal Monster Sindy Kills Me My Toyshop I want: Halo Benders Fireside Highway Slugs Girlsmen Bettie Seveert Visit my site to list your needs and wants: http://pw2.netcom.com/~petep/clean.html Don't Hold Back. Hey there... This is just a quick question which maybe some of y'all can help me out with: What's the best mail-order place to get scandinavian pop, indie and punk stuff from? I'm in the US and there's a lot of stuff I'd like to get my mitts on but which I don't have the patience to wait untill next summer to get so um yeah, I guess that's it. If there are any places in the US which redistribute scandinavian stuff, that'd be great too, but any recomendations would be much appreciated... thanks, Martin. --------------------------------- Date: Thu, 02 Oct 1997 10:07:02 +0100 From: monteringen@ljunglofs.se (Monteringen) Subject: re:Best mailorder: your opnions? >Hey there... > This is just a quick question which maybe some of y'all can help me >out with: What's the best mail-order place to get scandinavian pop, indie >and punk stuff from? My favorite is Roundabout. No punk stuff, but James does stock AWSF, NONS, Harry Lime, Dorian, and Soap releases, as well as various other Scandinavian odds & ends. Kind of old fashioned, Roundabout has no e-mail, so for the fastest service you can call to ask for a catalogue and to reserve items. Enjoy, Alexander ------------------------------- Date: Fri, 3 Oct 1997 00:52:31 +0200 (MET DST) From: Micke Rehnstrom Subject: Shallow/Swoon (+ Samiam and Shades Apart) Devoted shoegazers/dreampoppers should be aware of the fact that there is now yet another band name to keep in mind. Not a new band, though. When I scanned through the SID archive I could see that you, a while ago, discussed the large amount of bands calling themselves "Shallow". One of them, the one from Kumla (Sweden), has now decided to do something about that and will, from now on, call themselves SWOON. On their latest demo, "Goodsign ep", both names are printed but in the future it will be just SWOON. (Source: John Hard, SWOON). Enough about that. Since SAMIAM and SHADES APART are american bands I guess it is out of the scope of this list to post a long review of the gig I just came from. Besides, if you are into punk-pop and emocore, you do not have time to read any long reviews; what you should do immediately is to find yourselves a vehicle that will take you to the nearest venue where these bands are about to show up. Anything else would be utterly stupid, it won't get much better than this. /Micke, not interested in Jesper Larssons opinions -------------------------------- Date: Fri, 3 Oct 1997 01:20:59 -0400 (EDT) From: Chris Forsberg Subject: Iceland and other night spots Hey all, This is a message for Swedish and Icelandic bepsters and scansters...my friend Marti at Sonicnet is going to Iceland and Sweden to do a story on the nightlife there. If you know of any cool bars, night clubs, or any type of special party nights, it'd be cool if you email me so I can pass it on to her. I told her what I know (which aint' much). Thanks! Chris Now playing: Stina Nordenstam "Memories of a Color" (ok, so I like to mellow out every once in awhile...) --------------------------------- Date: Fri, 03 Oct 1997 11:17:08 From: Kimmo Saaskilahti Subject: dada girl r.i.p. Here's the latest piece of indiepop news from Tampere, Finland: Dada Girl have split; they played their last gig a week ago and no longer exist, at least in any form previously known. To my understanding, the reasons for ending the group were the fact that all the band members moved away from Tampere/Nokia and that contrary to their expectations and hopes, there wasn't any real progress to the group's "career", resulting in lack of interest in the future of the group. As far as possible future projects of the members are concerned, I was happy to learn that Aki Ala-Kokko and Arttu Haapalainen will continue working on All Stars, having already recruited new rhythm section upon their move to Helsinki. Also, being the supertalent he is, Antti Pinomaki will undoubtedly emerge back to pop business sooner or later; maybe with a new form of Dada Girl or in some completely other guise. That's all I know (right now), Kimmo ---------------------------------- Date: Fri, 03 Oct 1997 10:28:56 From: Kimmo Saaskilahti Subject: Re: Best mailorder: your opnions? Some time ago, xander@sirius.com wrote: > My favorite is Roundabout. No punk stuff, but James does stock AWSF... I'll second that. For things noisier, you might try Ajax or Forced Exposure which both have had a fair amount of Scandinavian (or Finnish at least) releases in their catalogues with reasonable prices. At least one of the songs will be played in the movie. The band will also perform two gigs in Los Angeles, one of them at venue "Viper room". And that was about all the information given in the paper (I was quite amazed some time ago when Expressen had a whole article about the death of the vocalist in LINK 80, until I realized that it was not because of him, but because of the fact that his mother was Danielle Steele (poor guy)). /Micke, listening to "Bird, fish or inbetween" by SOULS and wondering why a band has to split before he realizes how great they were ---------------------------------- End of SIN Digest #4.35 ***********************
