Subject: Latvian Indie comments
I have finally listened to the latvian indie compilation a couple of times
and it was a quite nice exercise. As usual it is hard to have an opinion
about bands after just hearing one or two songs with them. I also find it
quite frustrating (because I love a good pop/rock text) listening to the
texts and, mostly, not understanding one single word (OK, some of the texts
were in english). So I had to look for good melodies and harmonies (which
is not bad either) instead. But first: good work with the CD, Roberts :-)
Big favourites were Pienvedeja Piedzivojumi (believe me, the language they
use in their texts is not their only obstacle before reaching world fame
:-). The first tune, with aggressive guitar attacs, was great. Their second
tune sounded more slick, but still good (sometimes "experience" and
"slickness" seem to be the same, don't they?).
Since I like music consisting of a mix between rock/pop and folk and/or
classical music It was almost an obligation for me to like Lucius and their
acoustic "Untouchable things". And I did like it. A beautiful voice and a
beautiful violin, indeed. Why do I get the feeling that, at least, the
violin player has a background in classical music?
I also liked the contributions from Prata Vetra, Parks and Jauns Meness,
though none of them had anything that really "stood out" and made it more
interesting. I agree, with Roberts, that Sarkanais Oktobris were really
bad, mostly because the female vocalist seemed to have no knowledge about
the existence of any other tones than the false ones. And I also have two
questions to Roberts: 1) Are you sure that the band "How Much
Personalities" isn't just Nirvana without Kurt Cobain? 2) Does the female
vocalist in the gothic rock(?) band Skumju Akmeni look like she sounds - I
would not like to hear a voice like that in a dark alley?
Finally, I am right in the middle of changing to a new e-mail address at

/Micke, who would have liked to watch when those two members of Primal
Scream realized that the swedish police were about to arrest them for drug

Subject: Enter's first CD out now!
Hello lovely list people!
After over one year delay on the release
time table, Enter (Fin) has finally released it's
first album (CD). The album is titled 'Yah-Hah!'
and is available from a small indie label Metamorphos.
Yah-Hah! has the following 9 tracks: River, Stormy Monday (Again),
Cosmic Flow, Moon, Hi-Ho, One Goes Up, True Angels, Velvet Flames
and Christianity(*). All tracks by the Band, except * by Jouni M|mm| -
(* is actually a version of Kristinusko from Mana Mana's brilliant Totuus
Palaa LP).
Yah-Hah! was recorded during spring 1996
in Joensuu, Finland is Jackmaster Production Studios
by Enter's original trio-line-up (Otra/Osku/Pete) (currently
Enter has two more guitarists, Riite and Asko) and
while in studio band had visiting players ie from Xysma and
Babylon Whores. Also Teho (currently with Ismo Alanko) played
some synthetizers to Yah-Hah!.
The big delay was caused by maybe a million different things all the
way from the recording sessios via mastering problems to some sample work
that took way too long as well as problems with the artwork for the
covers.
But enough whining. Go and check it out.

I'm not into mirvana stuff and that's why I can`t comment this --- but I`m

Well, it sounded as if they had borrowed more than just one chord from
"Polly" :-).
But I guess it might have been incidental, it was not a "carbon copy"
anyway. And I shouldn't bother - all this recycling of music makes life
much more exciting, doesn't it? Just an example: The first part (before the
singing begins) of "Every breath you take" by The Police. You can gather
your friends, turn on the radio and when you hear this particular piece of
music you can start the betting about which song it really is - The Police
themselves, "I'll be missing you" with Puff Daddy & Faith Evans or "Who are
you" with Speaker. If you are lucky you can win a serious amount of money
:-)

Gordon is a ska-band from Gothenburg. They have toured a bit and played at
a couple of the festivals last summer. They have also released an album on
Roligan records in Gothenburg. The title escapes me, but it's pretty OK
stuff. They are better live (as most ska-bands are). I think they are in
the process of breaking up.

"Future Music" has named Bizarre's song "Any day" the demo of the month in
its August issue. "Any Day" is now available on the demo CD included with
the issue.
Estonia's largest daily "Postimees" says, that the August issue of "Future
Music" has a picture and a column-long review of Bizarre, or more
precisely of how the song "Any Day" was made.
Bizarre formed in 1992, it has released two albums since: "Beautica"
(1994) and "Cafe de Flor" (1996), the first having a lot of influences
from different indie-groups (Lush, My Bloody Valentine...), the second
being quite experimental and with modern ambient and drum n' bass sounds.
Both albums under the label Sally Cinnamon.
"Any Day" is a new song, composed for performing with the jungle-duo
Spring Heel Jack in January.
Bizarre web site is available at with "Any Day" and
three other songs of about the same age as well as some brand new
material.

Gordon is not a "traditional" ska-band, at least not live. I do not know
how they make records but when they play live they use keyboards instead of
trumpets, saxophones and stuff like that. More Clash-style than
jamaican-style ska if you ask me. I consider Liberator to be the best
ska-band in Sweden, though (and they sound much more "traditional" too).

Could not agree more. Gordon is on the "punky"-edge of the swedish
ska-scene. (Even though they wear sharp suits..). Liberator is one of the
best liveacts I have ever seen. Hopefully I will be able to see them in
Malmo in the middle of August. Talking about Clash, did anyone see Two
Sevens Clash at the Lollipop-festival?

Just to add my two cents to the whole ska traditionalism discussion:
There's kindof a time and place for both. Personally, I'm more in favor of
"trad" ska like New Yorks Scofflaws (If you like ska, I recomend you look
this band up. I think you can even buy their stuff in sweden these days)
and California's Hepcat. Even liberator who have a more 2nd wave 2tone
sound are, in my opinion just as enjoyable as punkier bands like Less than
Jake, Op Ivy or I guess, heck, the band I play in Heft, just somehow in
smaller doses.
It's always fun though when groups throw in a sortof special hook
to their style of ska (that's one of my major complaints about punk-ska
bands these days: they all sound the same!). Take Girlsmen, a swedish
group from Stockholm who apparently these days are more just pop, or
something. Either way, their self-titled album earlier album was really
cool because a lot of the bass lines and guitar and horn parts were
actually samples from old 1st wave ska classics like "Man on the Street".
It's a pretty cool album if you can find it (and they were really good at
hultsfred a few years back...).
Anyway, that's what I think, so there.

Okay - this might seem like a petty thing to complain about, but someone's
got to bring it up.
Do you ever read Swedish evening paper Expressen's friday edition "Fredag"
and check out their tour guide to see what's going on - who's playing
where and when? Right, and you're not alone either. So why can't the
guy handling this simple task, Robert Borjesson, do his job? I mean,
I have never seen one single guide that was correct. It almost seems
like he doesn't even realize it is pretty important to those who read
the guide - and probably doesn't care at all. He simply can't handle
this easy job. Some examples (there are numerous each week):
1. For about two months, Phil Collins was listed twice, with the same
date. After about one month, I thought I'd save him from embarrassing
himself even more, and told him about it. He never replied (in fact,
he has never replied to one single e-mail I've sent to him) and it
took him another month to remove it.
2. Check out the latest copy (from yesterday - August 1st):
* Grand Tone Music (ie. ex-"Salt") are listed under "Foreign Artists" -
and has been for some time.
* Nerf Herder are listed to tour with Bloodhound Gang, even though
they cancelled that tour three-four weeks ago.
* Catherine are listed to play with Matthew Sweet on their Scandinavian
tour - and that's okay, because it is true, but they are listed to play
together on _all_ dates, and that's incorrect. They will not play
together at the Stockholm Water Festival.
* Silverbullet had to change their name to Silverbullit - because of
copyright problems with the UK rap artist with the same name - but
there's no change in this guide.
* The Emmaboda festival schedule has been out for weeks, but Fidget
are still listed to play on August 8th _or_ 9th. (They play on
August 9th).
* Fireside are listed to play at the Lollipop Festival July 25th.
Umm.. when was this guide published - oh yeah, on August 1st...
* Loosegoats are listed to play in Pitea on July 26th. But this guide
came out on August 1st. Yeah.
* Oasis gig in Copenhagen on Sep 10 is nowhere to be found.
Okay, I think this is enough. Just remember to double check whatever you
see listed in Fredag's tour guide before anything else (like buying tickets
or planning a trip to see your favourite band).

Don't be too hard on the guys at "Fredag", Erik. Remember that they have a
huge responsibility. I mean, if they wouldn't give advice about how pre-
and after parties should be organized or propagate for the use of
helicopters in every rock video - who would?

Heh, I'm not even familiar with Fredag, and I could sorta tell you were
being sarcastic! Isn't it a shame that the people at the top of their
profession often don't put the care and time in that people doing it on
the grassroots level (like Erik) do? Maybe I shouldnt' be surprised, but I
always am...

It sure is strange that the largest and most obvious mistakes are committed
by the so-called professionals. I mean, anyone can make mistakes,
especially when it comes to details but the large papers seem cross the
border between "details" and "big mistakes" quite often. If you really are
interested in what you are writing about I think that you put more effort
in making things correct, true?
For example, I doubt that a fanzine, at least one committed to swedish pop,
would write that Tambourine Studios are situated in Lund (it is in Malmo,
which is close to Lund but still not the same place) like my local
newspaper "Ostgota Correspondenten" did. A fanzine might write that Lush is
going to play in Stockholm but I doubt that they would have written it one
week after Chris Acklands suicide, like "Dagens Nyheter" did. Both these
are good _news_papers but I doubt whether they are really interested in pop
music. And if you are not interested enough to see to it that you get
things as correct as possible I do not think you should write about it at
all.

There are two purposes with this message. One is to check whether my new
email address is registered on the subscriber list.
The second, and most important one, is to give orders to those of you who
are travelling to the Emmaboda festival this weekend. I am not able to do
it myself, unfortunately.
The orders are: Go see Sonic Surf City. This is their last gig ever, in the
history of this universe, and they deserve your attention. And even if you
should not like surf punk-pop you should go there and wave "bye-bye and
thanx very much" to Ola Hermanson, vocalist in Sonic Surf City and a guy
who has meant more to swedish pop music than most people realize. Who knows
if we would ever have heard about bands like The Cardigans, Brainpool, The
Bear Quartet, HappyDeadMen, Cod Lovers etc etc if he had not "discovered"
them and signed record deals with them. So, go and celebrate him, and his
band, before he moves (temporarily) to USA to continue his research in cell
biology (how come biology is such a popular career choice among pop/rock
musicians?).

hi,
i've been doin some homework, and im late as always, a couple of albums
that i have been listening to!
Smash Hit Wonders - Love Your Wife (Sunspot Rec)
There's no point whingeing any more, the slacker battle has moved
on....There's enough people out there to dig these Smash Hit Wonders
and I'm sometimes one of them!
'Love Your Wife' opens with 'Me and Malin', it cuts from gorgeous
'country-slide-pavment' to a 'full- blown-beatifully-framed-picture-of-
lo-fi-power-pop'!
Also songs like 'Breaking The Bonds Of male Power', 'Summer Of 89', 'Sunday
19th of May' and 'Got Nothing To Say', works very well somewhere around
Neil Young and Dinosaur Jr, and that's OK with me.
It's high quality pop songs and hey, that's always what you a wanted to
hear, right! Mid tempo songs crossing over to great power pop tunes works
well as long Smash Hit Wonders looks 'over there', the only time I think
they loose concentration is when they throw in a 'Bob Hund' chorus or
trying to have a nasty attitude as in 'Socialism' or 'The fever' or in 'I'm
On My Way', they'll do just fine without that!
What moves me most about Smash Hit Wonders is the sense of discovery that
I'll share with the band, the feeling that they have the chops and
curiosity, the ability and will to try anything to take you along with them
each wide-eyed step of the way.
It's a Smash in Indie land!

You do not have to be angry and/or sad. According to Aftonbladets TV
Magazine this is from last years festival. This year there was no
festival, because of troubles with the police, as has been reported
to the list previously.
BTW, since complaining about things seems to help (suddenly Grand Tone
Music is a swedish band in Expressen Fredags tour guide too - good work,
Erik) one remark about the info from SVT (swedish public television
company): Why call Backfish a "girl band"? OK, there are three girls in the
band but as long as David Johansson plays the drums in the band it should
be rather stupid to call them a "girl band". In addition, Aftonbladet calls
Backfish an "_indy_ pop" band. Pop music for race car drivers, perhaps?

Subject: Complaints...
Well, you know that anal retentive complaint about evening newspaper
Expressen's entertainment/weekend edition "Friday"'s tour guide I
posted to the list last week. Well, I decided I'd pass on a copy of
it to the guy handling the guide at the paper as well - and to my
great surprise, _everything_ was corrected in yesterday's paper!
Well, almost at least. He left out Catherine completely now - but I
guess that's okay.
Stunned is a good word - I've never seen him act on hints so quickly
before. Maybe it was because a copy of the message was also sent to
the editor-in-chief. ;-)
So, things do happen. But I'll leave it up to him to find out about
"Lynard Skynard" - which should be Lynyrd Skynyrd, "Coca Cola" - which
should be Coca Carola and "Arvidsaur" - which should be Arvidsjaur...
this (and last) week's eye-catchers... (and I'm not even looking for
them!)
I'm a bit surprised that none of the evening papers have picked up
on the Spiritualized tour yet though. But they'll find out, one day.
