Yes, I don't think they have ever broadcasted live concerts _live_ if you
know what I mean. Everything is recorded.

I received the Swedish Indie tape while on vacation and mailed it out
yesterday. I really love the songs by Fidget, Aquadays, and Honey is
Cool. I was surprised that, while the bands are indeed "indie", none
are very extreme or experimental. Oh well. Are people on this list not
interested in extreme Scandinavian bands like Mental Destruction, Sanctum,
Kukl, Dr. Gunni, and Bad Vugum-style bands?
Well, now that I know who Fidget are, I want to buy whatever is
available... I think this was already discussed, sorry, but could someone
send the info to me personally? And where does one mail order an album by
Honey is Cool, if one exists?
A little report from the US: a radio station here is heavily playing the
Cardigans' song that is on a movie soundtrack. Which is pretty
impressive, considering that this country is still very difficult to break
into from non-English-speaking countries.

Fidget only have the Semi-naked CD-single out yet (and the promo 7" which
you can win if you enter the Fidget competition), but an album is to follow
early this tear. Erik can probably tell you more about that.
Honey Is Cool have a 6-song mini-CD called Focky Focky No Pay.
I think Pet Sounds (a record store in Stockholm) do mailorder,
but I don't have any details on that. Maybe someone else does?
Those of you who live in Stockhom might be interested in knowing that
there's a sale on Pet Sounds starting today, and going on until saturday
(all new CDs 99:-, all second hand CDs 25:- etc.).
Now that I'm writing I might as well comment on some Swedish singles I've
bought recently:
Fidget - Semi-naked / Teddybear Baby
Not very different from the demo version I guess most of you have heard by
now. The b-side seems to be a cover of a song by someone who's name escapes
me right now. A bit silly for my taste, perhaps, but pretty OK anyway.
I know they hate being compared to the Sugarcubes, but if I would pick one
band to compare them to, it would simply have to be, yes, the Sugarcubes.
Him Kerosene - Loser Outfit / Raceday
Because of the Bear Quartet connection (the guitarist played on the first
2 (or 3?) BQ albums) I had hopes for this to be a bit more exiting than it
turned out to be. Sounds like a mix of Starmarket and Fireside, which isn't
so bad of course, but not that refreshing either.
Dipper - Butterfinger
Energetic pop, sort of like Bob Hund with a violently strummed aucustic
guitar and English vocals. The second track reminds me of Magazine, if
anyone still remembers them. They're supposed to be really good live too.
Bent Spanner, Arty Banner - ??? (sorry, can't remember right now...)
Debut 5 song EP/MLP recorded in Tambourine Studios with the most exiting new
music from Sweden I've heard for ages. These guys must have listened a lot
to american lo-fi acts like Pavement, Archers Of Loaf, Polvo etc, but manage
to create something that still doesn't really sound like any of those bands.
Sadly, the vocals are a bit (to say the least) annoying, which makes the
overall impression a lot lower than it could have been.

I am, definitely. Which was reflected in the best-of-96 lists that I
emailed to totte.pop, for example Mental Destruction's "Straw" being
my favourite Scan release of 96. Sanctum's "Lupus In Fabula" is also very
very good, but then I dig almost everything that comes out of Cold Meat
Industry.
A year ago or so, I compiled a tape with Swedish industrial/experimental/
dark ambient music, and some people on this list and one other e-list signed
up for that tape chain. Unfortuntately the tape got lost somewhere Down Under
eventually...

Ludde mentioned Pet Sounds, which is a record store in Stockholm. They used
to do some mail orders too, though I think it was never an "official" service.
That was just something they did on the side, so to say. However, I think
that service has ceased now anyway (at least for overseas customers), since it
was a lot of work that didn't generate any money to speak of.

I'm making a tape that will have 90 minutes of 22-Pistepirkko, CMX, Deep
Turtle, Aaviko, Jimi Tenor, Thee Ultra Bimboos, Larry And The Lefthanded,
The Isebel's Pain, Sweetheart, Circle, Keuhkot, Rinneradio, Monotonics,
Roope And The Rockets and a few others. even though this tape will have it's
camp/easy listning and almost mainstream moments, it will be more freaked
out and fringe than anything you've ever heard of.
If you like Dr. Gunni you should also check out Radiopuhelimet and Brussel
Kaupallinen. Gunnar Hjalmarsson (Dr. Gunni) used to play in the band that
later became the Sugarcubes. and that as we know is the band that Björk
first became known in.
I think that the swedes might now a few things more on how to look cool and
make trendy indiepop, but if you want something truly disturbing and
inspiring just buy evrything that Bad Vugum and Trash Can have ever released.

The All Janet - (ASWF) spent the summer writing new songs, and recorded
nine of them as well. In January, the band enters the
studio in Skelleftea again to record the last five-six
ones, for the upcoming debut album "Set For Release"
planned to be released sometime this spring.

Bad Afro Records - released a 7" single with Hellacopters with songs
"Misanthropic" and "I Got a Right" about a month ago, and
now it has sold out! Due to public demand, the second print
is now available, on green vinyl. Next up on the label is
a 7" single with Finnish lo-fi kings Larry and The
Lefthanded which will be released on February 1st, 1997.

The Cardigans - (Trampolene) are getting a lot of airtime on Canadian
Much Music and Spanish MTV in the US. The video to the
song "Lovefool" can be seen so often these days, people
are getting sick and (ha ha) trired of it!

Dada Girl - from Finland is touring in their home country together with
two bands called Tunaflakes and Flannel Mouth. The tour consists
of 7 gigs, all within a month. The band has also spent some time
in the studio recently, where they recorded a new demo with
3 new killer tracks! (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Doris Days - (Some Pearls/Pure Sand) Japanese version of their debut album
"Live in Poland" which is called "Doris Days" in Japan
has these added extra songs: 'Places', 'Homers Tomb', 'Bois
de Boulogne' - all taken from their CDEP "Places" which
was released on Barnsliga Skivor 1993, as well as 'Jumbojet'
which was a song left over from the recording session of
the album. The news do not stop there! Their label in Japan,
Pure Sand, has also released a 4-song 10" vinyl EP with the
band, containing songs from the album. Right now, the band
is chosing a song which will be included on the legendary
UK record store (trip-hop/hip-hop/club) "Mr. Bongo"'s promotion
compilation. For those interested in the band in Finland, you
might want to call or write to "Spinefarm" and let them know
about it, which will hopefully make them distribute their

Salt - (MVG) breaks up! Yes, it is true. After a couple of years of success,
touring, recording, releasing and having fun, the band decided that
they were more interested in continuing their separate and other
careers in the area of art and design. A final album will be released
in March this year, filled with recorded, but never released material.

How did this project work out? I've searched a lot but not found any
homepages on TBQ on the net, except for Petters fine discography.

Daniel, I guess you're the one who wrote the looong article on TBQ at
Benno's noticeboard a while ago. That was, by far, the best thing I've
ever read on that page.

Yes, Ludde is right. There are only the CD5 and promo 7" "Semi-Naked"
singles out so far. The album "No Boogie Coming Your Way" (working title)
is supposed to be out this month, and another CD5 will follow after that.

I think Pet Sounds still does do overseas mailorder (unofficially), unless
they have officially quit in the past few months....a few months ago I
called them from the States about getting the Cardigans' "Emmerdale" CD
and the Swedish version of "Life" (both unavailable in the States), and
the guy said he'd mail them to me no problem....they were expensive
though, but all I had to do was mail them a money order.

Subject: Dada girl tour
The 28 of December my band Brother Stuart played at club25 in Vaasa, with
Dada Girl, Flannel mouth, and Tunaflakes. About half of the 30 people that
were at the gig were in the bands, but it was cool; we all got beer for 1/2 of
the price. I liked Dada Girl best, even though none of the bands played
music which i usually listen to. I think it was all a bit too poppy.
Nevertheless, dada girl was 1000 times better than supperheads. They didn't
put on such a show, but they had Really well-crafted pop songs.
Flannel mouth was a little lame, but they gave a better show.
Tunaflakes sounded EXACTLY like Oasis would if Liam could sing with a little
bigger range. The music was just like oasis, the singers voice sounded like
Liams, exept he hit all the right notes, and didn't have problems with big
words.
And Brother Stuarts preformance? ...well as i already mentioned, we had
got cheap beer, and ufortunantly there wasn't much to do as we waited.
I am glad we played, because the people we met in the bands were really
nice, and i told them in dada girl to say hi to Kimmo, as they said they
know him. Kimmo?

I think there was a question about Jimi Tenor (real name Lasse Lehto if
anyone cares) on this list already earlier as well... He started his
'career' already in the late 80's and released a couple of albums on Euros
Records under the name Jimi Tenor And His Shamans. I have only the first
one, which is titled 'Total Capacity of 216,5 Litres'. The quizzical name is
a reference to their gimmich of using big oil barrels as percussion
instruments. They had other exotic instruments made out of vacuum cleaners,
drills etc. as well. I haven't listened to that LP in years so I really
don't dare do describe it. 'Industrial pop', perhaps? I think he released
another LP on Euros and then a couple on Bad Vugum ('Fear of a Black Jesus'
and 'Diktafon' if memory serves) but I don't have any idea what they sound
like. in 1995 he released the 'Europa' album on Sahko Records from which the
song on the Finnish Tape is taken from. It's sort of like soundtrack from
third-rate spy and porn films played on cheap synths and hammonds - really
kitschy and cool. I think there may have been another album on Sahko before
'Europa' as well? Anyway, now he is signed to the Warp label in the UK and
it looks like he is about to reach some kind of a cult status. His first
single on Warp came out in December and there should be another one soon and
an album after that. Well, that's what I can think of from memory. The Bad

Couldn't agree more; Antti Pinomaki really knows how to write a pop gem.
They were really good and played a mix of old and new material: three songs
from their first demo and a couple of songs that I hadn't heard before among
others. A while ago they have also recorded a new demo which has three
songs: 'Cecilia' (_not_ a Simon & Garfunkel cover), 'Are You Ready Eddie?'
(or something...) and a new-ish track the name of which I don't know.

I thought they were quite a bit boring. Perhaps with shorter and, well,
simply better songs they would be OK, but at least that night they were just

My thoughts exactly. Everybody had said that they sound just like Oasis and
true enough, the demo tape which I got some days ago sounds a lot like that,
but live it was even more similar! The vocalist Finn Andersson even moves
around on stage a bit like Liam. Even though I am not a huge Oasis fan, I
liked Tuna Flakes quite a lot. I spoke briefly with Finn after the gig and
he told me they will be doing another demo tape in a couple of months' time.
The tour will continue to Helsinki next weekend (?), if you're around don't
hesitate to check these bands out!

Well, yes I do know them (to some extent at least) and I did had a little
chat with Arttu of Dada Girl that night but mainly about the winter sports

Picked this up from a "my 1996 top ten list" written by a guy in the US:
"Komeda: The Genius of Komeda

And Komeda has been included in several of these lists lately, esp. in
the US. I'd put my money (if I had any) on that they're the "next Swedish
thing" over there...
