My complaints on the tape were never meant for anyone to be taken personally. I know that we voted for the tape contents, and my complaints were not really meant to be about the tape as such at all, but rather about the boringness and lack of ideas in the Swedish indie scene (which was made pretty evident by the contents on the tape, some bands excepted). Sorry if that wasn't clear. I'd also like to avoid an "what is band X doing on an _indie_ compilation" discussion, hence the "Well, enough about that, I think..." comment... I think everyone has their own opinion about what is indie and not, and I don't have any problems with that. I was just expressing my opinion. Enough about that now, I hope... Saw Figdet (one of the exceptions mentioned above...) and Soundtrack Of Our Lives at KB (Malm|) last friday, and it was probably the best concert I've been to this year. The audience didn't seem very interested in Fidget (just like Loosegoats were pretty much ignored by the Sebadoh audience when supporting them at Studion a few weeks ago), but they still managed to impress me a lot more than the previous times I've seen them. Looking forward to that album. But the band of the evening was of course Soundtrack Of Our Lives. Union Carbide Productions always was my favourite Swedish live band, but their records never quite seemed to match the experience of seing them live. Now, with SOOL, Ebbot & Co. have managed to make a record that surely must be everyones favourite scandinavian album of the year (or...?), and to my pleasure they were as good as, if not better than, Union Carbide live too. (So, who will be the first to tell me they don't consider Soundtrack Of Our Lives "indie"... :) /Ludde -------------------------------- Date: Sat, 14 Dec 1996 14:11:00 +0100 From: micre215@knuten.liu.se (Michael Rehnstrom) Subject: Swedish indie tape Hi! I just wanted to express my opinion about the tape. Maybe Erik (chief) thought I sounded a bit negative about the tape, when I handed it over to him. This is not the case, I am just a bit negative about those bands that I had not heard before, that is: Aquadays, Red Sleeping Beauty, Blissful and Shallow Soundwave. Can't say I liked any of these bands. The rest of the tape was OK, though. Some of the bands (for example Komeda, Wannadies, Popsicle, Sindy Kills Me, Honey Is Cool) are of the kind that never seems to disappoint you. To my surprise I also must say that the Melony contribution was OK. But I've heard enough of them to continue not liking them, at least for the moment. Maybe the big surprise was Puffin. I've always thought that Puffin was more strange than good, but these two songs were clearly the other way around. Maybe I have been wrong and maybe these songs are representative for their sound. Is it so? I also feel I have to write a special paragraph about Yvonne. Sometimes, in my weakest moments, it feels as if pop music has lost it's "touch", as if it doesn't grip me and engage me any longer. In those cases this is the cure that I use. I don't know what kind of sorrows you have to live through to write this kind of songs, I only know that I probably could spend a whole night just listening to this song ("Drifter"). So painful and so beautiful. So, on the average, I would say that the tape was quite good. Maybe I wouldn't /Micke, listening when "No one speaks" ------------------------------- Date: Sat, 14 Dec 1996 14:22:27 +0100 From: micre215@knuten.liu.se (Michael Rehnstrom) Subject: Continue Continuation of the last sentence of my mail (sorry!): ...Maybe I wouldn't have chosen Kent for a tape like this, but this discussion we've already gone through and this is, of course only my personal opinion. Unfortunately Deep Turtle is no more. they got tired, or so i understand. Deep Turtle was one of the most original, innovative and eccentric bands i've ever heard of. it was one of the first bands that made me listen to the more freaked out side of music. They were atleast as incredible live as on the records. because i'm new to the list i don't know what you know, so i'll just tell all that i know. all of their early eps, singles and songs on compilations have been gathered into one album, the _Rip-off Documento_ it's got the _Snakefish_, _Satanus Uranus Tetanus_, _Riva_, _Ghoti_ and _Deep Turtle_ eps + a few other songs like covers of Dun Delion's "Kotona Hissukseen" and Sweetheart's "Mr. Cocktail" the album is, like all of their albums, on Bad Vugum (BAD-54) Their full lenght album _There's A Vomitsprinkler On My Liverriver_ is thee album. Hmm. Obviously it's pretty dead here. A week ago, for example, someone asked if Toby did play a video with Mazzy Star on Alternative Nation last week. The reason I haven't answered is that I missed the first 10 minutes of the show, so I can't be sure about the answer. But the video wasn't showed during the last 110 minutes of the show. Speaking of Alternative Nation, there must be something wrong with their mailing system. I tried to vote for The Mutts as last week's "alternative option", but the mail came in return. Does anyone have the right adress, so I can check if I've got it wrong. BTW, I've heard some nasty rumours about Salt splitting up. Is this true. I've had some bad feelings about Salt for a while now, I think it's almost two years since they recorded some new material. /Micke, sometimes wondering if christmas is more than a "God damned carnival" ---------------------------------- Date: Tue, 17 Dec 1996 22:28:45 +0100 (CET) From: Martin Eksten Subject: Re: salt On Tue, 17 Dec 1996, Michael Rehnstrom wrote: > BTW, I've heard some nasty rumours about Salt splitting up. Delivered to the Mega Records office at 11 AM. It features the band trying to be some kind of secret agent running around in an abandoned paint factory in stockholm. One of the guys in the band is put on fire and the rest run about, take photos and fall over. And Nina gets alot of coverage as she's singing the whole time and the only one of the others that actually pull off the whole thing is the drummer who is sporting one of the best full beards i've ever had the pleasure to lay my eyes on. And he looks realy cool in his wheel chair as well. To sum it all up.... Beard - top notch!!!!! Wheelchair - way to go!!! Rest of the band - well??? maybe a couple of laps round the soccerfield would've helped, now they look more like the tryouts for policesquad than real agents. The Song - oh, i almost forgot about this one, can't understand what it's all about, and doesn't thrill me a bit. The part where she sings "Huyndai" is rather interesting though, since it's the name of a budget japanese car, but maybe i've just misunderstood the lyrics. Oh, yes one final note, when the guitar player runs down a spiral staircase Niklas from the recordlabel wanted to delete the clip since you could see what brand of sneakers he was wearing and the band weren't sponsored!!!! He called it political reasons..... makes you wonder, doesn't it? take care out there / Toby ------------------------------- Date: Thu, 19 Dec 1996 05:03:07 +0100 (MET) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Sin's Music on the Radio [23-Dec-96] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie MUSIC ON THE RADIO Scandinavian Indie December 23rd -> December 29th Day Date Artist Recorded --- ----- --------------------------------- -------------------------------- Mon 23/12 nothing Tue 24/12 Orup (R) Pite}, Dansar & Ler July -96 Wed 25/12 Nordman (R) Lund, Olympen 16-Mar-96 Thu 26/12 Robyn (R) ]re, 29-Feb-96 Sun 29/12 Post, F}, Wagon Live This list covers the Swedish National Channel P3's "Live" - always at 21.03 (R) = Rerun ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- This list is also available on the Scandinavian Indie WWW pages at: http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/uprad.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ------------------------------- Date: Thu, 19 Dec 1996 05:02:43 +0100 (MET) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Motor Tour List _Update_ [18-Dec-96] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie Motor Tour List UPDATE Scandinavian Indie December 18th, 1996 by Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SCANDINAVIAN: Liberator (S) Burning Heart 8/2 Malmo - Big Jump Cup New Date ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NON-SCANDINAVIAN: Ash (UK) Border *NEW* 6/2 Stockholm - Gino 7/2 Malmo - KB Baby Bird (UK) MCA *NEW* 5/2 Stockholm - Studion Bush (UK) MCA *NEW* special guests : Souls (S) 12/2 Copenhagen (DK) - Vega 13/2 Stockholm - Gino Lamb (UK) PolyGram *NEW* 4/2 Stockholm - Studion Space (UK) Mega *NEW* 3/2 Stockholm - Studion ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The COMPLETE Motor Tour List is posted once / month to the list. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Date: Thu, 19 Dec 1996 20:12:31 -0800 From: SUK Subject: Re: salt Martin Eksten wrote: > > BTW, I've heard some nasty rumours about Salt splitting up. > It's true. Yeah, all this and a little more was written in an article in Metro yesterday. Really sad. They will do design and art instead. :( Their last gig was in july (?) with Screaming Trees in Minneapolis. I got to see them twice. At Gino, just about a year ago + at Hultsfred 94 (?). The Gino show is still one of my fave shows ever, cause of the girls standing in front of the stage, "hångling" with each others. Check out scan-indie digest from 951215! Really sad. They will do design and art instead. :( I knew I should have posted the Selected News earlier. :-) Seriously though, yes, it is a tragedy, though I can understand their decision, not only after seeing how tired they were of the whole thing after their last gig on their second (right?) US tour in New York down in the Village at Brownies (here's them Salt memories neatly tied into the story, see? :-)). Nina said a lot about how fake the music business people were over there, when I talked to her after the show that night. "They smilied and said we were the greatest, but in their eyes you could see that they were lying." But also because they were forced to play the same songs over and over again, for over two years. I saw Salt three times - first here in Linkoping, February 95, at Herrgar'n just one week after their debut EP was released. Then at Hultsfred 95, and finally in New York in March this year. The New York one was a blast. Nina singing together with the two opening acts together at one point, where she mostly just groaned and screamed, and rolled around on the floor. And they (when they finally hit the scene) played two new songs (probably included on the forthcoming album) together with all the fantastic oldies. Two guys from Z-TV was there as well by the way, but only stopping by on their way to an interview with Type-O-Negative. Unfortunately I don't have any "party afterwards" stories to tell, because the band went back to Sweden the next day. Though it was the night I asked her who the lucky guy was she was going to marry that summer... a mistake I'll never forget. > Their last gig was in july (?) with Screaming Trees in Minneapolis. I saw them twice live, in Linköping and at the Hultsfred festival. I think the last one, of those, was the greatest. I stood next to a Pantera fan who really had some not-so-nice words to say about the fact that the Pantera gig started while Salt were still playing. His friends had to drag him away from the stage. I'd bet my pants that Z-TV will show it sometime, but when and where? Any premiere-date decided that is? //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Dec 1996 07:03:32 +0100 (MET) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Sin's Music on the Radio [30-Dec-96] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie MUSIC ON THE RADIO Scandinavian Indie December 30th -> January 2nd (from 1997 - only Monday to Thursday due to cutbacks) Day Date Artist Recorded --- ----- --------------------------------- -------------------------------- Mon 30/12 Eric Bazilian Pite}, PDOL July -96. If you can't check out the Web-version, with cool graphics, free stuff, giveaways, neat things and so on on the Scandinavian Indie web site at: ___ http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/scan.html ___ here's the simple text version: ----------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie & Mega Records presents the Fidget Contest! ----------------------------------- * They're gonna build a brand new planet?! No, but close enough! Scandinavian Indie & Mega Records presents the Fidget Contest! When we opened up Santa's sack, we discovered 5 copies of Fidget's Promotion 7" Single with two songs, "Semi-Naked" and "My Prawns" added straight from their last demo! The single was released in 1000 limited edition copies only, and you can't buy this one in the stores. This is definitely an exclusive item, and you can be one of the five lucky winners! * They're gonna leave for another world?! No, but here's what you need to know! Just write down your answers to the following 4 (four) questions below, write your postal (snail mail) address and include your e-mail address as well. If you do this, you have entered the contest. That's how easy it is! * They're gonna build a new dimension?! No, but there are some extra things you need to know. The answers to the first three questions can easily be found on the Scandinavian Indie web pages, or if you have been a subscriber to the Scandinavian Indie Mailing List and paid attention. The answer to the fourth question can not. It is a "come up with a good answer" question. That is, write down your best guess! The five best (as selected by us) answers to the fourth question will win! * They're gonna make it on the other side?! Yes, and the contest closes on January 20th, 1997. That is when we put all entries with correct answers to the three first questions in a hat (or if no one has three correct answers, those with two correct answers (and so on)), and pick out the five winners, those with the best answers to the fourth question that is. The winners are presented on the Scandinavian Indie Contest pages, as well as contacted through e-mail within a week after that! Good Luck! Q1: Name four festivals Fidget played at in the summer of 1996? Answer: Q2: Where does the name of their own label "Prodik" come from? (any of the 2 possible answers is okay) Answer: Q3: They call their music "bonkers-pop", but where does that expression come from? Answer: Q4: Why are they called "Fidget"? (Guess!!) Answer: My Full Name : Street Address : Zip Code & City : Country : E-mail address : Feel free to leave a message to Fidget if you want! //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) //Scandinavian Indie: http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/scan.html //Giveaways, Free Stuff, Cool Graphics, Sound Clips & Loads of Information! -------------------------------- Date: Fri, 27 Dec 1996 05:11:08 +0100 (MET) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Sin's Music on the TV [27-Dec-96] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie MUSIC ON THE TV Scandinavian Indie December 27th -> January 2nd Day Date Artist/What TV Program Channel Time --- ----- ---------------------- ------------------- ----------- ----- Fri 27/12 Best of... Spoke to Otto, the drummer of Wagon, and he did not know of any live events Dec 29th featuring them. Besides, the two guitar players, Fredrik and Torben, are currently studying in Australia... Could it be a recording? Guess we'll know by the 29th... Later amigos! Carl Living in boxes after moving from Växjö to Gothenburg.
