Haven't heard much Darling Buds, and I'm not sure what songs albert put
on the Icy tape, but I am very familiar with Unun....great, great band.
I hope Albert put stuff on there from "ae" rather than "super shiny
dreams", as (IMO) their stuff sounds so much better sung in Icelandic
than translated in English....and that's what they do, translate it, cos
it's originally written in Icelandic. Gunni told me that after finishing
up the Anglo version (super shiny dreams), he thought it felt like a
dubbed movie or something, I feeling I shared when I heard it. Gunni just
took a trip to the country to work on tunes for their next album. And a
record deal is in the works too.....don't know if they've inked the deal
yet, but he said he just quit his day job at Japis (record store), so...

I can tape any of that stuff for ya....I've got all the original
Icelandic vinyl by Tappi, Kukl & Theyr (except for the VERY first Theyr
album, "Pagad i Hel"....which is kinda rare (understatement). Siggi
himself was looking for a copy for me, but couldn't get one. I'd love to
even get it on tape at this point, I've got all their other stuff....

Oh cool, that's on there?! I've heard that was good....I have one
Ornamental album which sucks, I think it's called "no pain", but the

Yes, her voice is pure honey on that track, I agree!! But even better is
her voice on a track called "Visur Vatsenda-Rosu" which is found on
Hector Zazou's album, "songs from the cold seas" (it has a differnet
title in Europe, tho....something in French). It is an album with songs
from lots of Scandinavian and "northern" female singers, mostly...also on
there is Lena Willemark, Varttina, and others....

I met one of the guys in that band when I was in Reykjavik a couple of
summers ago. Joey was his name (not sure if that's how you write it).

They broke up, I believe,there is now a band called Olympia, that has
Sigurjon Kjartsson.....am I right, Albert? Also, Ottar Proppe is also
acting in film
too...check out "Remote Control", it has live Ham, pretty hilarious.
Ottar is also in a sorta Parliament/ 70's funk band called Funkstrasse.

How true, I also thing that most of the Sugarcbes and Bjork stuff sounds
better in Icelandic than in English, of course I understand Icelandic
more than most people (abroad). Just that I think the Icelandic lyrics
are more concentrated than the English. On the other hand, regarding
Unun, Heida the singer told me that when they translated the lyrics to
English Thor, one of the song/lyrics writers, was happier than with the
Icelandic lyrics, since it was more like his original meaning at least in
some songs.

No, no deal yet. But the offers keep coming in. Perhaps Unun will be on
everybodys lips soon, including Mtv's. I sure hope not. They deserve
worldwide recognition, but IMO popularity (like being on Mtv) is not what
they need. People can buy the records without them being popular.

I can get all the Unun videos plus some concertson videotape, if somebody
just payes for the tapes and mailing cost.

I have extra copies of Kolrassa/Bellatirx's CD's. I have both the first
CD (called Drapa) and the second (Kynjasogur). They sell for 80 FIM (ca.
20 dollars, including mail). The money goes straight to the girls in the
band, since they gave me the CDs to sell last year when they were her in
Finland.

I have the same situation. I have all the Theyr, Tappi and Kukl stuff,
except for the Theyr's first album. I had a chance to buy an unplayed
copy of that LP in 1980, but was short on cash at the time and have
regretted that moment ever since.

I personally think that Bjork's best collaborations are with Bjorgvin
Gislason and with Megas. Megas' albums are easily available from any
Icelandic record store, but the song 'Afi' where Bjork sings to the tune
by Bjorgvin Gislason, is getting rarer by the day.

That is barely half the story of Reptilicus, they are also heavily into
magic and Asatru, as is Hilmar Orn or HOH of Current 93. Much of their
power comes from their strange believes and traditions.

Okay, now it is the final time to sign up to the Scandinavian Indie
Compilation tape #3 - Swedish Indie, tape chain. If you have no idea
what I am talking about, please do not hesitate to ask (by sending
email to me at chief@lysator.liu.se).
I will compile the tape during the next days, and will send it out
on the chain next week. Unfortunately I will not have the time to
make a cover, as promised before, before I send the tape, but I will
make one, and post it to the list and put it on the Web-pages so if
you want one, just grab it when it is ready and print it out.

Hey! What's the silence? Didn't anyone go to the Pop Dakar festival? We
want reports!

OK, seriously. I wasn't able to go, but i wnet to the Mera Hitlatar
Festival in Haninge. Yuck, i really feel like i'm to old for this, in these
surroundings. Just a lot of drop-out punk kids hanging around, and to my
big surprise Terry Ericsson from the Pop magazine.
Anyway, i basically wnet there for Bob Hund, but i also catched a glimpse
of Sindy Kills Me. Not my style, but very intense never the less. That
typical punk attitude, but the female singer had a certain weird charm. She
spoke in finnish between some songs, and looked like som baby "seriefigur"
cartoon character from hell, violently spitting and screaming. The bass
player was cute too.
Bob Hund made a good show as always. A few new tracks, one called Upp Upp
Ner that was _really_ nice: slow, subtle lyrics. And "Reinkarnerad Precis
Som F=F6rut" has evolved to an excellent hommage to Kraftwerk. Jonas put in
some sequencers that make it ressemble "Europe Endless", a synthesizer
favourite!
Beautiful light show too.
Second gig of the weekend, i went to see secret gig of Kjell Hoglund
yesterday, at Gamla Stan pub Magnus Ladul=E5s. It was crammed, there were
maybe 25 seats, but almost 100 people there. OK, i know it's not very
indie-ish, mail me for full report. It was good anyway.
Anyone going to Yvonne/Singer/Melony showcase at Kungstragarden on 6 june?!
This line-up looks massive!!! They walk on at 20:00, be there!

Aloon - fronted by ex-Suredo member Mikael Myrnerts have recorded about
20 songs, which has resulted in a couple of record labels showing
interest in the band, Telegram being one of them, though nothing

Aquadays - received a phone call in the middle of the night not long ago.
Who was it, you ask? Minty Fresh! The label in the US that
handles Cardigans, and more recently Komeda. They had visited
the Scandinavian Indie pages, read about the band and became
interested enough to ask them to send a demo tape. The band's
planned debut CD has been delayed, but is still planned to be
released on Dorian Records in July-August. Martin and Lisa
(two of the three members) are getting married on midsummer's

Beat Butchers - the record label based in Stockholm have opened their new
contest on their Web-pages! This time it is a Solar Lodge
contest, and you better answer the simple questions in a

The Cardigans - (Trampolene) are on their way to the US. They will play eight
dates starting in Hoboken at Maxwells on June 10th then 11/6
New York at Tramps, 13/6 Providence a WBRU Live Show, 14/6
Chicago at Double Door, 16/6 San Diego at Open Air Theatre,
17/6 Los Angeles at El Rey Theatre, 19/6 San Francisco at
KCRW Bene and finally 20/6 San Francisco at Bimbo's. The band
will also play a number of festivals in Europe. Roskilde
in Denmark, Kalvoya (Norway), Open Air Festival (CH), Rocking
Athens Festival (Greece), T In The Park, Phoenix and Chelmsford
(UK), Belga Beach Festival (Belgium) and Galway (Ireland) as

Coach Bob - the rest of ex-Suredo recorded a demo with three songs,
during the autumn last year under the name Auntie Nell.
The band changed their name to Coach Bob this spring,
when Ulf Stenport (previously on drums) changed to guitar
and Cloudberry Jam-member Per Bystrom joined on drums.
Apparently they are planning to do some recording late
this summer, and try to get some gigs this coming autumn!

Definitivt 50 Spann - (Rabb) the 50 SEK compilation CD series continues.
This is the fifth in the series and it is going to
be released on June 11th. Rabb records are a gathering
of the Birdnest, Kamel and Beat Butchers labels.

The Drowners - (AWSF) played at AWSF's own club in Skelleftea "Pele"
on May 18th and Jeff Eyrich (A&R at Island Independent US
and Salt's US Manager) was there to watch and listen.
Apparently it was Salt who had recommended the band as
"Sweden's Best"! Jeff said that he had a great time there,
and described the band as "great, raw, young, unpolished but
really good." He will hopefully be back in Sweden for the

Jumper - (WEA) recorded a demo in Hakan Gostas (from Love Scuds) studio
(which is the old Sunlight Studio) a while ago, and this demo
(which was one of the three first from Hakan's studio) got them
signed to WEA. They are described to sound like "a poppier Kent".

Popundret - (AWSF) and The Drowners had a combined release party at AWSF's own
club "Pele" in Skelleftea at the end of January this year.
Popundret was first on stage, and Ekan said "Hi, we're Popundret
and this is OUR release party... and then some other band is
playing too I think." When The Drowners came on stage, Leif
said "Hi, I'm Leif and this is MY release party." of course.

Riviera - (Trampolene) also recorded a demo in Hakan Gosta's studio some
time ago (with Hakan Gostas on bass), and the demo got them

Salt - (MVG) are back on tour in the US. This time they travel together
with Screaming Trees. The schedule looks like this (all dates in
June): 11 Boston, MA at Avalon Ballroom, 12 Philadelphia, PA at
Trocadero, 14 Carrboro, NC at Cat's Cradle, 15 Atlanta, GA at
Cotton Club, 16 Birmingham, AL at City Stages Festival, 17 Knoxville,
TN (tba), 18 Cincinnati, OH at Bogarts, 20 Cleveland, OH at Odeon,
21 Detroit, MI at Phoenix Center/CIMX, 22 Chicago, IL at Metro
and finally on the 23rd Minneapolis, MI at First Avenue.

Speaker - (PolyGram) actually recorded a demo in HG's studio a while
ago, and what do you expect? Yes, this demo (which also was one
of the three first from the studio) got them a record contract
with, that's right, PolyGram. A single is scheduled for release

Starlet - played in Stockholm May 20th, and Jeff (see The Drowners news)
was there to watch and listen. He could not say enough positive
things about the band, and the band will most certainly be signed
to MVG here in Sweden in the very near future and to GreenTeam

The Wannadies - (Soap) have been included on two compilation CDs lately.
One is a double CD set called "Untitled" released in the
US (probably also in the UK). It contains 40 tracks all
together. The other one is number 15 in the "Volume"
series. It is called "Technology Alert!" and is a double
CD set + a CD-ROM disc for Mac/PC - and the usual 192

Okay, so far these people have signed up to the Scandinavian Indie
Compilation tape #3 - Swedish Indie, tape chain. If you have no idea
what I am talking about, please do not hesitate to ask (by sending
email to me at chief@lysator.liu.se). The list of what is on the tape
will be posted in a minute (yes, I am ready! :-)) Unfortunately,
three of the bands had to be left out, because no one helped me out
with them, and I had to add other bands in their places, plus a couple

Scandinavian Indie Review: I find it kind of hard to review this album, as I
am not as familiar with this kind of rock, but I will try. Dry Dive is
sometimes in the fast, captivating hard rock/metal room, and sometimes they
are visiting the rock-ballad room. Actually, the last group I listened to
when it comes to this mix was _Europe_ but it is definitely wrong to compare
Dry Dive to them. Alas, I have no bands to compare them to, and maybe that
is only a good thing.
"The Doomed And The Blamed" is a perfect example of both these rooms, and
also my personal favourite. Hard guitars and drums lead the way into echo-
filled ballad segments with an acoustic guitar. "Ashes" and "The Sleeping"
are on the other hand long ballads from the start to the end with extremely
beautiful vocals. I get a strange feeling that I have heard "No Promise To"
somewhere before! Slow acoustic sections interrupted by harder electric
ones. The chorus goes like this: "Preach your love, promise me. Preach your
love, religiously. Preach your love, deep in me. Preach you love,
undoubtedly." But I can't place it! It is a great song though.
I have to give credit to the band, because this is tight as hell! You can
tell that these guys have been around and have definitely played together
for some time. And _Thomas Rehn_ (lead vocals) has a _fantastic voice_.
Screaming, whispering, talking or just singing, high or low, it does not
matter. It still sounds extremely good. I more than often compare his voice
to _Eddie Vedder_ (Pearl Jam), like in "Rub It In" (my second favourite)
and "Nothing" (third favourite), sometimes to _Axl Rose_ (Guns'n'Roses),
like in "Apocalyptic" and then sometimes to _Joey Tempest_ (Europe), like
in "Mistreated". And it fits perfectly together with the other members'
voices as well. Just take a listen to the slow and floating "Faces" and
you will know what I am talking about.

Scandinavian Indie Review: Lemonator are from Finland. I would never have
guessed it if I did not know about it from the start. But these days it
seems as if our fellow nordic country to the east is producing more and
more great pop groups, and what can be more satisfying than that?! Just
listen to the unbeleivably good group _Dada Girl_ for example. But, this is
a Lemonator review, so I better skip this love-bombing on Finnish pop now!
Lemonator plays power-pop quite frankly. I could say that this band must be
the Finnish mix between _Popsicle_ and _Naked_, but I won't. Because this
is way better than both bands. Faster than Popsicle. A more cool, low and
captivating bass. Okay, they do have the "Sha la la la"'s in "Round" and
with the chorus "We go round, we go wrong, we go round, we go wrong - It's
neverending. We go round, we go wrong, we go round, we go wrong - It's
every evening." (I think) it actually is the song that sounds most similar
to the bands mentioned. They have duet male vocals that sounds just great.
They have alarming guitars. They have a bit of the 60's there too. The
have that low bass. They have an extremely long end section in "Moovie"
with walls of noise that leaves you hanging, waiting for the burst when
the chorus kicks in again, even though it never does. Though I have to say
that I hear a bit of really early _Duran Duran_ (!) vocals in there too.
"Playing With Dinosaur" is definitely the hit here. Fast, in the "Dad Around"
(Naked) way. Heavy guitars, with breaks that reminds me of _Nirvana_.
Actually the vocals in this song also sounds a bit like _Nirvana_ when they
reach the "It's So Alarming, It's So Alarming" parts. I can not help to sing
along with the chorus, and that is a sure sign of a hit. "Tourist" is my
favourite song though. Slow and pounding. I feel as it it is always building
up to the utterly beautiful chorus, where the duet vocals make me shiver,
because it is _so right_. And the scratchy heavy guitar that kicks in at
the end is ingenious.
Lemonator has great musicians, great singers with confident voices that
match eachother remarkably well. And they have the hits. I just wish I
could hear more of the lyrics, because now I have to settle with only
attempting to sing along. Not that this is something bad - remember that
I love Slowdive and Curve... Well, I definitely recommend this EP and I
bet that I will recommend their debut album too, planned to be released
this summer!

Scandinavian Indie Review: Imagine that you got stuck over night in a toy
store without any chance of turning off those self-playing $20.00 keyboards.
You know the ones Casio puts out for example. Or imagine a whole orchestra
where the members are playing such keyboards for the first time in their
life. Right, they are trying _everything_! Sometimes pressing all the keys
at the same time, sometimes trying out different drum beats, pulling the
bender right and left furiously. Or do you remember the PC games before the
16-bit soundcards came on the market and you had to put up with 8-bit?
Well, all of this actually describes the sound of Mark Slamzkis. The first
time I listened to it, I thought that maybe, just maybe, someone was pulling
my leg. No way can someone listen to this without going mad? It is definitely
enough to drive me mad in a couple of minutes. But when I read the letter
that came with the CD, I understand that this is no joke. This man has been
well received and has generated airplay all over the world, they say. People
are listening to this CD. Further in the letter, they say that the style is
unique, and that he is using old and new electronic equipment, playing music
that has few comparisons. That I definitely agree with. It is almost an
understatement! But when they say that people who listen to _Pink Floyd_
and _Depeche Mode_ will have a place for this CD in their collection, I
must protest. I have listened to both groups myself when I was younger,
and I can assure everyone that this CD would not be in my collection.
The description "Heavily Thematic / Progressive / Avant Garde Music
performed by a equally Heavily Synthesized Group." is a very good one and
so my recommendation is that if you are a _Jean Michel Jarre_ fan, and you
are looking for something you have never heard before, something that will
baffle you up to a point where you scream, but still with a touch of
_Jarre_, this is the CD for you.
