I think that Polar Records is owned by Polygram (as are all the Stockholm
Label Group companies, ie Stockholm Records, trampolene,...)

Actually, I've always thought (ever since I heard their songs on "In the
Lime Light" early last year) that they sound like Mike Oldfield, "Moonlight
Shadow"-era. Not that it means much, but it gives me another clue as to why
I don't like their music (and I'm not saying this because our band was on
the same compilation but didn't get a contract with Polar :)

and he wore it last night here in uppsala too..! shouldn't it start to,
like, be getting time to, like, take it off and, like, *wash* it..? ;)
anyway, the show here was alright i guess. they were on for about an hour
and they played maybe 2/3 of the latest album plus a couple of songs from
_abstinence_ as well as "hey princess", "sandy" and "irreplaceable" from
_lacquer_.
the sound was, at times, really shitty. only two of their newer songs
made sense (the ones were they keep going on for a while) but the older
ones worked so very much better! it was like the sound was adjusted to
the more "rocking out" songs (ie. the older ones) which left the newer
, and softer, sounding like crap. i don't really know what to say. i
still think that popsicle is by far the best pop-band in this country,
but i don't know if it's worth 100 SKr to see them, while it cost a tiny
bit more to see the wonderful seam and superchunk (who came here all the
way from america) a week ago..
but i guess thay must be making money these days and, well, if that's
what they want.. but they really should've done something about the
sound because it didn't only sound bad, the vocals had a lof ot echo
which wasn't anything for the better.. the sound-guy should be replaced
or something. oh, i should try to say something nice here though.. well,
both "irreplacable" and "sandy" were just as good as ever, so, hmm, maybe
they should put in a few more older songs..
..yeah, maybe they should. like for example the wonderful "velveteen"
which i kept yelling after, but they never played. :(

liked it anyway so that was probably for the better..

of bands named "shallow"? i know there is one 4ad band with
that name and there's also a canadian heavy-rock band referring
to the very same name.

Aren't you confusing them with Swallow? There are at least two Swallow,
one of them on 4AD as far as I can remember, and I think the other one
is on Subpop.

oops, yes, you're right about the 4ad band. "swallow", i'll remember
that.. but i am darn sure about that canadian heavy-rock band though.
they aren't very good but at least they are called "shallow", so now
it's a one-on-one when it comes to taking the other one to court, i
guess..! :)

Subject: NON SCAN: Cornershop in Scandinavia right now
I went too see cornershop on saturday, and I don't know what I
expected, because last time I saw them they were extremly pissed and
didn't wan't to play more than half a hour, but this time it was
really different.... fucking mazing I would say. It was more or less
an acoustic show with drums, percussion, sitar (and some box with
loops samples and stuff like that) and guitar once in a while.... The
entire set was extremly dancable...more or less like cornershop gone
dub ;-) For some reason there wasn't many people ( <100 I guess), but
everyone really seamed to get into it... and we managed to make so
much noise that had to re-enter the stage two times (actually the
percussion thought he could trick us with walking in on the stage make
a little noise on his gear... but no ;-) ). I talked a bit with
Tjinder afterwards, and their schedule was to go Aalborg (in Denmark
sunday (yesterday)) and the continue to Norway and Sweden before they
returned to Copenhagen on saturday...
And the "6am Jullandar Shere" remixes released next monday really
makes your dance your pants off ;-)...
So in a few words, Go and see them.

Well, I bought the single this weekend, and the three other songs on it
are, surprise, surprise, all very Sammy-like. Left Alone Again is definitely
the best track, though.

Subject: Shallow - more information
After a whole bunch of e-mail and list info-requests about Shallow,
here's a load of information (thanks to the speedy reply from the band :-)):
Shallow information (probably as it will look like on their WWW page):
Shallow - consists of Nicolas Janco (age 18), David Sundqvist (age 20)
and Annica Silvonen (age 18).
Nicolas, as you might know, used to play drums in the band
Aquadays (ex-Somersault). He is also currently playing in a
jazz-trio called Fatima. David also plays in a Pixies-influenced
band from Gothenburg called Blonk, and Annica actually is an
opera-singer, and sang at the "konserthuset" in Gothenburg
last spring together with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
She also sings in a number of song-ensembles.
The band is not yet signed to a label, but are of course hoping
they will be, and have therefore sent a number of demos to
different record companies. They have plans to record yet another
demo around April, also on an 8-track roll-tape recorder.
They haven't played live at many places yet, but one gig worth
mentioning is at the Gothenburg Rockfilmfestival, April 1995.
Due to trouble with members/musicians, they haven't played
anywhere since. But that doesn't mean that they are unexperienced
live-musicians, because they play and have played a lot in other
bands. One gig is booked right now, and that is at Hemulen in
Gothenburg, though it is yet without a definite date.
They do not agree with comparisons to Lush and Slowdive (see
Scandinavian Indie Demo Tape review), but they are admirers of
U2 and Cocteau Twins.

Funny that. I didn't remember they were on that compilation CD! And when
I took a look at it a few moments ago, what do I see (I'm ashamed..)
Pineforest Crunch - "Cup Noodle Song" (and another track called "Barbie").
Listening to it (ie. Cup Noodle..) right now, and you're right. They _did_
sound kind of like Mike Oldfield! But they all have developed quite a bit
since, especially Asa. Here she sounds nervous and really not as experienced
as she does nowadays. Pretty interesting actually... It's different here
and there, from the way that song sounds now I mean.

No idea really... but at least "Single Girl" by Lush was still had the
good old 4AD logo on it... maybe Domino is just distributing 4AD
stuff? I seem to remember that the list quoted above had all the
Creation bands listed with the notorious 'Sony' moniker... which is
of course a bit different story...

Hmm... When I last spoke to Lawrence Bell of Domino he made no mention of
acquiring or distributing 4AD and he probably would have done as I'm his
lawyer. I think you'll find it was a mistake by the magazine.

Yeah, i read a live review in Melody Maker, probably the UK Shallow. And a
friend of mine even has a livetape with'em (from 92). So "our" Shallow
better add something stupid to the end like "Shallow Sthlm"... Hint,
hint!!!

Anyway, the wonder about favourite venues. Mine is Gino and Studion,
Stockholm, coz these are the places where all good bands play. Too

Despite the ongoing icy winter weather, things are finally looking a
bit more up here in Tampere, Finland; at least as far as all things
indie are concerned.
Last Friday saw the opening night of a brand new club Stop, hosted by
Ville of Super fame. The first night featured an 'easy listening

Next Friday there will be a live band, Oriental Caviar Dinner and
another guest DJ.
The very same day (Friday the 23rd) will also mark the long-awaited
return of the already legendary Penguin club! Once again the local
indie kids will be treated with top sounds from the heavier and more
fuzz-laden edge of independent scene, impeccably selected by the
talented dj Harvey and dj Weird.
Both clubs will be happening on a regular basis from now on (Stop
every week and Penguin every other Friday), so in case you're in town,
check these places out - I can promise I will!

I totally agree with your opinions, but:
Yes, bands like Live and R.E.M. are labeled college rock as you point
out. BUT this term is so misleading, there are very few college radio
stations that play that type of music. In fact Superchunk and Seam
are typical bands being played on U.S. college radio. As soon as a band
gets airplay on commercial radio stations or MTV most college radio
stations have the policy to stop playing them. This is what public
radio is all about, to offer something not heard anywhere else.

Hey, has anyone seen this yet?? I notice it's a repeat....I live in the
States, but would really like to know more about this, and even get a
copy if it was any sort of extended concert or something....Unun is
fantastic Icelandic band, and I'm friends with their bassist, Gunnar
Hjalmarsson. So far I've only been able to see a few little clips of them.
Did anyone tape (or see) this???

Whaile on it, today's DN featured an inteview with Stereolab, and it said
they were in Stockholm this weekend for promotion. It also said that they
were DJ-ing at Hannas Deli last sunday. Hell, i'd died to be there!!! But

Well, i saw PfC again yesterday at Handels, and i liked it much better than
at Gino. Asa performed without _no_ make-up whatsoever, and she looked
really different, just like the girl next-door. She also wore a football
shirt, instead of the long red dress she posed in at Gino. Strangely
enough, i liked her looks of yesterday much more.
Popsicle however, had a bad day (well the setting didn't make it better),
and did a less than aveage gig. No spirit.

Monoshock is Gustav (vocals and guitar) and G-son (drums) from Bor}s Energi
and Martha (vocals and bass (guitar on some songs)) from Doll Squad. They
sound a bit like Sonic Youth I would say.

Hello all,
just a short review of Superchunk, Seam and Psyched up Janis at the
Garage in London.
It was great.
That's it.
Jokes aside, the coverage of 'chunk/seam on the list inspired me to go
see them here. According to the bands it was the last date of the tour.
The house was (probably) sold out, and the bands seamed to be in a good
mood. Warm-up act Psyched up Janis really surprised me - don't know if
you've heard of them, I hadn't. Their music is really angstfilled and
sorta disharmonic - like Dino Jr meets Foo Fighters and MBV. The
setting was only Guitar - Bass -Drums, but the sound was *really* big,
I was especially amazed by the guitarplayer, it sounded as if he was
playing at least three guitars...
Seam were in a good mood - changing drummer four times and making crappy
jokes in between songs. The set was really short, only about 30 mins,
which surprised me.
Superchunk started out by making jokes about Damon of Blur, and in the
middle of the set their sound techie walked out on stage and made 'a
public apologee to Damon'...
During the last song the band started changing instruments and the guys
from seam joined them too, and they had a massive jam-session (actually
more like noice-session...) for about ten minutes... Cool!
Enough ranting about this.
I shall be back on friday to report on the Wannadies performance...

Since she is so good at expermenting in avant garde and post-modern
music it wouldnt suprise me if she is going to use those TV -clips for
her new video.
Who knows, maybe Eric Cantona can direct it.

"protecting Sindri" (her son) or something.....it happened in the airport
in Bangkok, I believe. So you actually SAW it? The TV had actual

She suddenly knocked the journalist to the ground, then continued
hitting her while she was down. The incident only lasted a few
seconds, then some security men broke up the fight and pulled Bjork
from the scene.

Yeah, they had an article about the whole incident in today's edition
of the evening paper Expressen as well. With pictures. Apparently,
she had called the reporter later and apologized, stating that she
was a bit upset with journalists. The reporter wouldn't press charges.
She isn't related to Sean Penn in some way is she? :-)

Being a Link|pinger, one is kind of obliged to obtain whatever Cloudberry
Jam release, and more than often, one is happy about that fact. As with
this CD single.
The first song is a happy, fast and irresistable beauty, filled with the
lovable, well-known happy vocals from Jennie Medin, with J|rgen W{rnstr|m
always in the background to back her up. I feel Jennie has received more
attention this time, as her vocals break through more than before, which
can only be good. If guitars, drums, bass and tambourine aren't enough,
they have added a string-section, a tumpet, a synthesizer and together
with swinging jazzy "dididi-do-do", "para-ba-bappa", one is either dead,
or singing along, tapping one's foot to this. "what goes around, it comes
around"...
Listening to this one, I feel I have heard it before! I know I have,
but I don't know where and why? Anyway, Scorch is a bit tougher than
the previous track. Jennie's voice is a bit harder, but when she sings
together with J|rgen, it sounds like their voices are a perfect match.
The breaks leading the way into the choruses and out again are ingenious.
The synth has a more prominent place, swirling here, "plinging and
plonging" there. And the use of trumpets really hits the nail on it's head.
This one is a personal favourite. "it's a sure thing that you don't have to
know, it's a sure thing that I don't have to show".
A special mention must go to our own list-member Magnus Astrom for the
cover design. It's (as well as the forthcoming album's design) fantastic.
Sort of a mix between 70's orange and brown psychedelia with a "cbj" logo
that remings me of Japanese Manga-style.

The first single for an upcoming album is always interesting - it usually
tells you what you can expect from the album. I hope this one does not
follow that "rule".
Kr{m takes me back to 1995 - this sounds just like the Kent we're used to.
But that's not a bad thing. Not at all. In fact, it's great! Soft and
almost silent cuts, with a drum beat and Joakim Berg's voice pressed against
the windshield, then hell breaks lose, imprenetable guitar-walls with
smattering drums and a bass-line that makes the neighbors (below) crazy.
Just like "Bl}jeans" and "Jag Vill Inte Vara R{dd" from the previous album.
But, I can't find any smart breaks, one of the appealing small things that
I feel made Kent special. Like they have conformed to usualness. But it
doesn't matter much. It's a Kent-hit in any respect.
R|dljus comes with a single acoustic guitar, piano and cello together with
Jocke's voice, in fractions of high and low and with a small dist-effect.
It's pretty unpretentious, and really something I'd call a "ballad".
"Vem tror du att du {r, i den h{r s}ngen".
The third song would probably have been a great one if they had removed the
incredible dist on Jocke's voice and speeded it up a bit. Acoustic guitar,
synthesizer a bass and drums, in slowmotion. But, remove the dist, and it's
yet another ballad, and they probably didn't want that. Speed it up, and
it would've been .. I don't know. It's pretty lousy actually. Sort of
Depeche Mode meets Di Leva.

Hello all,
I'm back again with another report form the UK, this time all about
swedish pride The Wannadies. This in due time, though - first the warm-up
acts:
K's Choice - from Belgium
Unexpected treat. Truly great band, with an extremely talanted and very
androgynous singer. At first I wasn't sure wether it was a man or a
woman, but after the first song I decided it must be a she. (It was) The
band sounded a bit like a 'nicer' version of dEUS, loads of harmonies and
strange guitar noices. I realized afterwards that I'd heard them on the
radio before the show - probably on the Mark Radcliffe show. Summary:
Worth checking out on CD. (This was the first date of their european
tour, maybe they're coming to scandinavia?)
Ruth Ruth - from New York, New York [in their own words - I would never
make a crappy joke like that ;-) ]
Pretty cool three piece band. A brief summary of their sound: Sounds like
Buffalo Tom doing Lemonheads-songs the way NOFX or some other west-coast
'punks' would do them... Brief and to the point, heh? Pop-songs with punk
attitude. Quite enjoyable.
The Wannadies - Sweden!
The moment everyone had been waiting for... The Wannadies did a very good
show, loads of songs from the latest album, and some from the album
before that ('Bouy'? Don't remember the name of it.) Even two new songs,
one called 'Freinds' and another one I didn't catch the name of. Both
were quite good though. The crowd was going wild - the Garage is quite a
small venue, guess it takes about 2-300. It seemed to me that everyone
knew the words of all the songs... The fact that there were quite a few
swedish people might have helped. Towareds the end of the show I
retreated from the first row, where everything seemed a bit crowded and
sweaty, back to the bar, which gave me a good overview of both the stage
and the crowd. Standing there sipping my pint of bitter I lost count of
the people body-surfing and stagediving... In fact it seemed like the
whole venue was jumping up and down, not only the first 6-7 rows of
people! I think the Wannadies are on their way to fame in the UK...
All in all a very pleasant gig! Feels kinda sad to sit on the f*#%ing
train back alone and returning to boredom. [I'm 'stuck' in Hertford
studying at the University of hertfordshire's Biz-scool. Everyone but me
listens to Michel Bolton and likes it. Bit of a drag.] So if anyone on
the list should ever be in the London area, and going to a concert - feel
free to send me a line, and we'll have a blast!
I shall be back reporting about scan-indie related events in the UK.
