Subject: Poptown '96
The swedish national radio channel P3 have recently awarded the
southern town Lund "Poptown '96". With this award, Lund will host
a three day mini-festival starting on thursday the 8th of February
1996 and it ends on saturday 10th, at Mejeriet. P3 will broadcast
four hours live each night 18:00 -> 24:00.
Here's the scheduled live bands so far:
Thu 8/2 - Satantic Surfers, S.P.O.C.K., Popsicle
Fri 9/2 - Agurk Players, Tiny Poetry, tba
Sat 10/2 - Colubrids, Milky, Wilmer X
and there's a lot of other things happening as well, demo
contests, seminars, etc etc.
Tickets will be released on monday December 18th, 1995.

Subject: Popsicle on ZTV
For those who aren't able to get ZTV, ZTV News had an interview
with the band and their producer Niklas Frisk (from Atomic Swing),
played some songs from the new self-titled Popsicle album and
showed the "new" video this week, as well as stated that the
band will start touring at the end of january 1996.

Q. WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT THE GIG TONIGHT?
A. It was fun to play, even though the stage broke. One of the legs on one
of those squares that makes the stage just broke and Petter fell
backwards! Maybe it was time for it to break, when it's been swaying
for such a long time.
MB. You almost couldn't hear the drums. We wanted them a bit back on the
stage, but during soundcheck the soundcheck-guy wanted them where they
were.
Q. WHAT SONGS DID YOU PLAY?
PN. It was quite a few.. 'Socialism', 'Summer of '89', 'Golden Haircut',
'Straight Edge Song', 'Alltogether Now', 'Breaking the Bonds of Male
Power', 'I Never', 'Superbambi' and 'Let Freedom Ring With a Shotgun
Blast'. The extras were 'Manic Monday' and 'Wannabe a Wannabe'. We had
world premiere on 'Alltogether Now' and 'I Never' tonight!
Q. WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
PN. We're fom Skovde! The second best band from that town really.
Kracklites is the number one! They play some kind of hardcore-techno,
like if the Doors would play techno today. People are really afraid
of them! The guy who sings is like 120 kg, and looks lethal. At least
that's what everyone says. Petter's talked to them, asking them to
play live more than they do, but no-one dares to hire them. They
simply kick ass.
Q. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE NOT PLAYING?
PN. I'm unemployed and without a place to stay at the moment, Thomas
sweeps chimneys, Jesper works as a music teacher and Johan is a
student (film). Our manager, Magnus is a media teacher, reporter
at TV4, student and, of course, manager.
Q. WHO WRITES THE LYRICS / MUSIC?
PN. I write all the lyrics and work with Thomas on the music. But all of
us arrange the songs.
Q. HOW ABOUT RELEASES?
PN. [Laugh] It's pretty embarrasing. One demo. That's it.
In December 1994.
Q. COULD YOU NAME SOME OF YOUR INFLUENCES?
A. Pixies, Sebadoh, Blithe, Bob Hund, Jam, Neil Young, Machinehead -
that's where the 'Let Freedom Ring...'-title comes from, but we would
never actually buy something they've made though.
TB. The Who, Small Faces and Savages are really my influences.
PN. Redheads!
Q. DO YOU LISTEN TO OTHER SWEDISH BANDS?
A. Sure we do! Bob Hund, as number one, then Naked! Other than that, well,
Kent, Honey Is Cool, Souls, Salt, Blithe. And Loosegoats. They're
really great, friendly and all.
Q. ARE YOU TOURING RIGHT NOW?
PN. No, not at all. The next gig we know of is in Sundsvall on the 9th
of December, together with Blithe and Honey Is Cool. We have a
preliminary date in Skovde on the 8th of December though. That's
pretty much it for this year. Next year we'll play at the Underground
in Gothenburg, on February 10th.
Q. WHAT FESTIVALS HAVE YOU PLAYED?
PN. We've played the Emmaboda festival this year (1995), Araby '95, which
was an anti-rasist gala with about 15.000 people in Vaxjo and then the
Kamikaze festival in Hova this summer.
Q. WILL WE SEE YOU SIGNED TO A LABEL SOON?
PN. Well, we're talking a bit with Soap right now, but they want a lot
more material from us before they release anything or sign us for
that matter. It's kind of good that everything's a bit slow for us
right now. We get a lot of time to rehearse new songs, which is
needed if we want that contract. Anyway, Ceilidh (Good Dog Records)
want to release something with us, if the new Stevepops, a good old
four-track 7",sells well. That's all we know right now.
Q. HAVE YOU BEEN FEATURED IN ANY MAGAZINES OR PAPERS?
PN. Yes! We got a fantastic review in Avenyn (entertainment section in
Goteborgs Posten), and from a load of fanzines. Almost too good
reviews to be honest about it. Pop and SA have reviewed our Demo
as well, but the reviewer in SA really didn't know what she was
doing, saying we were "lo-fi"!
Q. ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE TO END THIS INTERVIEW WITH?
A. We had a motor-accident a week ago, which could've ended really really
bad. Bengan [MB] was driving the van, I think we were going to Borange,
and listened to Goldie pretty loud. Petter just played a bit with
Bengan's cellular phone, but Bengan wanted him to put it down, in a
safe place. Petter put it in a little holder on the dashboard which
he thought to be a really really safe place. But that wasn't what
Bengan thought, so he was about to grab it, and...
TB. I shouted _What the hell!!!_.
A. The road turned, Bengan didn't. He almost hit a telephone pole doing
80 km/h!
TB. I just screamed: _Hit the brakes! Hit the brakes!_. Then, when we
finally stopped, I remebered the trailer!
A. The trailer went to hell. Though we were lucky that it just snapped
like that from the van, or we wouldn't be here now. The funny thing
is that even though all this happened, the cellular phone was still
lying in the holder on the dashboard! A lot of stuff on the trailer
were broken though, and we had to cancel our gigs in Borange and
Falun, which made us lose about 10-15.000 kronor. But we didn't need
to pay anything repairing the broken instruments. Thomas and Jesper
fixed everything themselves.

As of today, there are only two bands completely booked at Herrgar'n,
and the starting schedule looks like this:
11/1 - Local band, tba
18/1 - nothing (I think it's a kravall that night)
25/1 - Melony
1/2 - tba
8/2 - Sludge Nation
Melony is the latest band signed to the SOAP label, and sounds somewhat
like Eggstone. The three in the band all come from Stockholm, and they
will release an EP in January.
Other bands that are planned but not yet completely booked include
A Shrine (West Side, will release a new album in March), and Ludo X
(from Copenhagen, Denmark, have released an album in Denmark and
a single "Audience" in Sweden. The album will be released in Sweden
in January, mixed by Tore Johansson).
That's about all I know at the moment. I haven't seen Skylten's schedule
and I had no idea Starmarket played there on December 12th. A bit sad,
that their information doesn't reach more people I mean.

Hey, you missed out at the marvellous Passagen gig back in 92?! I saw them
three times during that tour: Uppsala, G=E4vle(!) and Stockholm. Got'em on

Someone asked when the Radiohead gig at Gino (1-dec-95) would be broadcasted
on the swedish national radio channel P3, and now I have received an answer
to that question:

Mouth - have recorded four new songs, which will be released on an EP
soon (January / February). They have also made a new video
to the song "Hole of Your Head", which is to be released
next week (week 52). The US version of their CD, also named
Hole of Your Head, was earlier said to be released in the US
on February 13th 1996, though now it looks like March will
be the month.

Semi-boot? I better check out that page. I also read in today's NME that
they are releasing a single, _and_ that they are releasing the CD as
well (in february / march). One could almost think they were signed
to Creation.

Which one do you have on tape? The one they broadcasted on the radio (P3)?
I just turned on the radio one night and there they were. I only managed
to record 2 1/2 songs :-(. Maybe we could do a trade of some sort? I know
they have played in J|nk|ping as well, but I think that was 1991, and I
missed that one as well.

Subject: Selected News [22-Dec-95]
Some Selected Scandinavian Indie News
Cardigans - have almost sold 1.000.000 copies of their album "Life".
In January, they are on an european tour together with
Bluetones, Heavy Stereo and Fluffy. Countries selected
for this tour includes the UK, Holland and France.
Cloudberry Jam - are in the studio recording their new full-length,
which is planned to be released in February. Most
of the album is recorded at Toodle Recordings (which
is Jorgen Warnstrom's (guitar, vocals) own studio)
in Linkoping. Strings, brass and vocals will be added
at Silence Studios in Koppom (where Popsicle's new
album was recorded for example). The final mixing
will be made in Umea.
Coca Carola - who are soon celebrating their 10-year anniversary will
play at Kulturhuset (Stockholm) on wednesday (27/12).
No fee, it's free. :) Be there at 19:00.
Flakes - from Linkoping are playing at Kafe 44 (Stockholm) on thursday
(28/12) together with Loosegoats. Be there at 19:00.
Popsicle - received 2 points (out of 5) in today's (22/12) Expressen
Fredag from reviewer Mans Ivarsson, who stated in his
review that he would not fall for the hype, and didn't
care if he would be "left out in the cold" because of it.
Somersault - had to change their name, because a hard rock band from
Karlstad registered the name as theirs recently. So now
they are called Aquadays. Martin Aamot (vocals, guitar)
says that they picked two words they all found beautiful
and put them together, trying to avoid selecting a "real"
word. They will record their new demo after the new year
festivities, and it will be released in the middle of
January.

Subject: WWW Pages
I've updated and changed (completely) a lot of pages on the
Scandinavian Indie WWW site, and I will continue with this
during the whole christmas-new-year-holidays, so don't be
alarmed if something seems to be missing one day, or something
new is added another. It's perfectly "normal". :-)

Yeah, the requests are flooding in already ;) Actually i will, but the
scanner here is locked up over Xmas, and i'll try to work that machine out
after newyear. I've never scanned stuff before, i must admit.

in Gavle when they play some My Bloody Valentine song on acoustic guitar..

And why haven't I heard of this before? Jan? Now I'm really interested,
but I guess it'll be better if we continue this through email, right?

Subject: Salt in the USA
Hej!
Guess what? I just heard Salt on the radio (WHFS, a Baltimore
"alternative" station) last night, REALLY late. It
was "Bluster", and the dj admitted they had just gotten in this import cd
single (I'm fucking flabbergasted that they played it, this station
usually just rams the same dozen or so tunes down everyones throat til
they're sick of them). Here's hoping a buzz gets going on this band so
some of us yanks get to see them over here some day.
ALSO: just a general FYI for anyone who hasn't heard or doesn't know: the
Icelandic band Kolrassa Krokidandi (aka Bellatrix) are *incredible*. I
remember Albert Sigurdsson talking about them months and months ago, but
I have to agree, they are just too good. Their CD "Kyjasogur" refuses to
leave my CD player. It's so good it's scary. I'm led to understand that
they are currently in the US, recording and playing a few dates. Be great
if one of 'em was somewhere near me!

That's great! I asked my sister (who lives in Boston) to check some
record stores there and see if she could find their album or EP
or something, but she didn't find anything. I missed my chance to
talk to the band when they played here (because I was down with the flu)
too, so I have no idea what's going on, if they're going over there
or anything. I'll have a chat with their label though and see what
I can come up with.

Why "aka Bellatrix"? I just talked to my ex, who lives in Reykjavik, if
she knew something about them. And she did. She didn't like them. :)
Anyway, they're supposedly all girls (and one guy), mixing pop/rock/punk
with a traditional icelandic violin. They have never really learned how
to play, so their sound is pretty thin, and they have become popular
because they're a "girl band" and because they've picked pieces of
what's been popular before and followed that thread. <- that's her
talking, I have never heard the band myself. The CD is called
"Kynjas|gur", and it translates to "strange tales". That's about
all I found out. She promised to send me a copy of it, so I get to
hear what they really sound like. :)

Update: my best friend just told me his wife heard this Swedish band
called Salt on the radio, had I heard of them? :-) He told me that the dj
was saying that their album was out here (USA), that you could buy it...but
this confuses me! They are on MVG, a Swedish indie label, right? How on
earth could this be available here, except on import? Unless they have
just been signed to some major label or something....maybe the dj doesn't
know what he's talking about, or Kelly heard wrong....

The band has gotten this name "Bellatrix" for their album "Strange
Tales", which is totally done in English, unlike their other albums they
did under the name "Kolrassa Krokidandi"......I do not know if they have
permanently changed their name to Bellatrix, or if they are going with 2
names, one for Island and the other for the rest of the
world....actually, common sense tells me that they have probably changed
their name to Bellatrix, but I can't say for sure. Anybody know??

I sort of agree with part of this, but violently disagree with the rest!
True, they are 4 girls and one guy, and their sound is a hybrid of
pop/rock/punk, but also folk, postpunk and at times hints at dark goth.
The violin parts make them sound similar (at times) to another Icelandic
band called Reptile that was around in the late 80's/early 90's, but
although Reptile was god-like in my opinion, they were hardly popular, at
least not in any large-scale sense....from listening to them, I can sorta
tell that Bellatrix are self-taught and are not trained musicians, but
hell, to me, this is a plus! I really hate muso shit, and the fact that
they "never really learned how to play" allows them to come up with some
really original guitar riffs, and really interesting song
structures....when I listen to "Kynjasogur" (the Kolrassa album)it is
totally obvious that I am listening to some *truly* gifted songwriters,
but songwriters that maybe don't know what they are doing, if that makes
any sense? It's sorta like Joy Division in that sense....those guys
didn't really know what they were doing and their playing was not very
polished, but they invented a whole new style (and influenced god knows
how many bands in the process).
Now, not living in Island, I can't comment on why they have become
popular there, but if it is as your ex says, then that is a pity. I
happen to really like female vocals, but to make a band popular just
because it contains one sex rather than the other is kinda stupid.
Trendy or no, Bellatrix is a great band.
BTW, their are sound files of Bellatrix and other Icelandic bands on the
Bad Taste label at the Bad Taste website. The homepage is

If you poke around, you should be able to find the link to the sound file
page....I think you can even download a song.
