Well it's bad in the States too! I subscribe to Spin (and I will not be
resubscribing, let me tell you!)...some of the hipper-than-thou writers
in *that* rag just really get under my skin! The article on indie vs.
alternative in the recent issue by a Mr. Eric Weisbard is ridiculous.
He does exactly what you describe: set himself up as the All-Knowing
Arbiter of Taste, looking down upon any mere mortals who have the
temerity to - gasp!! - LIKE something that is played on the radio! I
pretty damn sick of it, myself.

I think Jan is pulling our legs. I just borrowed Metro from a colleague and
glanced through it. There were articles about Naughty By Nature and Monika
Zetterlund, but nothing on Salt. Or maybe I didn't check carefully enough.
Anyway, last night Salt and Fireside made a prestigious gig before a packed
Gino. Lots of pop celebrities and label executives in the audience, and some
mere mortals like Jan and I. Fireside were great, it was the first time I saw
them live, and I'm not surprised if they'll hit it big. Salt I've seen a few
times by now, and were tight as always. This time I got the impression that
the bass player stole the show; he jumped around pretty wildly towards the
end, while Nina was unusually calm. I've got to mention the first band too,
Monster. This is the new ska-core band with ex-Teddybears' drummer Glenn.
I only caught the last song, though it was excellent. Fast punk/hardcore with
both trombone and saxophone laying out some odd ska breaks.
Coming up in the royal capital this week: Yvonne at Gino on Wednesday.
Thursday sees a clash... Mouth at Kafe 44, and Poverty Stinks at Studion.
I'll probably go for Yvonne and Mouth. Any takers...?

ok. so i happen to "know what it's all about". yeah. whatever. but maybe
if andres&co shouldn't take themselves so damn seriously i too would
enjoy reading a "top 100 of all time"-list. as it is now, i simply don't.
they are still writing about music in a way of trying to educating us all
(as if we, ourselves, weren't able to distinguish what music we like and
what we do not) and that is what pisses me off to no end when it comes to
swedish rock-journalism. following?

Fuck, it just went to one of the best gigs for a _loooong_ time. That is
Fireside and Salt at Gino Stockholm.
OK, the bands were really good. But what blew my pants of:
I stood just by the stage when Salt played. Next to me were two girls,
maybe 16-17 years old. I was taking photos of Salt, and suddenly one of the
girls was starting to rub her leg against mine. I looked at her and she
looked back. Very young, short black hair, slim. I continued to take a few
photos but she wanted my concentration.
So she climbed up in front of me onto the bass-speaker just by the stage,
and lied down on it. Now the other girl (long blond hair) started to rub
the blackhaireds belly with her hands, and soon the hands wandered under
the t-shirt over her boobs.
The girls started to embrace and kiss each other, and looked at me, like
"come on!"
So i took a photo of them, just for fun. Now, they freaked out completely.
The girls started to chew each others lips, lick each other in the face,
teasing and smiling. The blackhaired "tied" her legs around the other one
and began to move to the rhythm of the music.
I took some more photos of them, the concert was going on all the time
during this. They continued to kiss and cuddle, type "sex with their
clothes on" for maybe 20 minutes until the gig was over.
What can i say? Hope noone gets offended by this, (sorry, women on the
list!), but this was a weird and wonderful experience. I haven't seen the
pic yet, but i really hope they turned out OK.

Yeah, dark, evil music, sort of. Lot of grim bass.

(shame!).

You didn't tell the end of the story. When Salt's concert was over I
stepped up to Jan to have a chat with him. The two chicks were still
there, but when I approached they went away and left the place. So I'm
sorry that I broke the spell, and sorry if I spoilt your potential plans
for some extra-curricullar activites after the show :)
Shit, my ears still goes ring-a-dinga-a-fucking-ding, it was LOUD last night.

Well, that was the title of their demo tape a long time back now (it
seems) but that's not the reason I'm writing;
The reason I'm writing is that this great pop band from around here,
Super, have just yesterday released their debut CD5 "Spark" on
Tangerine. Fantastic stuff, three songs in all, first one "Spark" is a
surefire radio hit with some ultra catchy melodies and totally groovy
basslines. Next one up, "People's Democratic Movement", almost an
instrumental that will surely have everyone jumping up and down as
those pa-pap-pa-da-da's come in. Some great bleeping moog thrown in
for good measure! Lastly we have a quiet and sooo pretty song called
"trouble in sex", really it's very beautiful and sweet, that's all I
can say. The band excels throughout, chanteuse Minna is in her usual
breathy mode which makes me dizzy in the head, all in all if you're
into bouncing jazz-tinged pop music I say you need a little Super in
you life.

ps. there was a release party here in Tampere yesterday and the band
played a brilliant show. Also Saku (from psych-rockers COO) performed
some Bruce Springsteen songs alone with a guitar and a harmonica and
yes, I admit it sounds bizarre but he was totally impressing and went
down a storm.

On the topic of "strange" things happening at Gino. When the Charlatans
played there february last year, a girl I talked a bit to in the queue
outside really held on to me during the concert (her friend disappeared
somewhere), and when it was over, she asked if I'd wait for her while she'd
go to the bathroom. So I waited for a couple of minutes, and then this other
girl came up from behind and tapped me on my shoulder, saying "they're really
great!" (referring to my Slowdive t-shirt), so I started to talk to her,
(and found out she was from Kalmar), and two weeks later she was my
girlfriend.
Another time, when the Walkabouts played there, I guess it was last year
as well, my friend that I went there with had to go home early, but I
stayed and started to chat with some people at the bar upstairs. They
turned out to be some sort of acrobats, and okay, we were all pretty
drunk at the time, but when they held me up-side-down in my legs from
the bar, just to show a trick, I decided it was time to get out of there.
And when Cranes played there exactly a year ago, me and my girlfriend
didn't want to go home after the concert, so we stayed at the bar
downstairs, and went up getting invited to their (Cranes) party,
got our names on the guest list for a gig in Amsterdam, Holland, they
had a week later (with Catherine Wheel if I remember it correctly)
etc etc.
Anyway, stop that Erik! :)
All I wanted to say really was that Gino is a great place. The first
and last place I got to see Slowdive live too, by the way.

I am trying to find a source for some music such as Dolla-tuti
or Giitu, perhaps by Angeli Girls. This music is characterized by
a high voice over a VERY hard driving beat. Can you point me in
the right direction for finding this in the USA?
I heard some of this (or something similiar I'm told) on a TV show
that was about reindeer racing.

In my never-ending attempt to find easier ways for people to submit concert,
tour and festival listings to Musi-Cal (and to confuse you with the
bewildering array of submission options...) I've added yet another way to
submit concert itineraries to Musi-Cal. I think this may be the easiest
yet.
I'm sending this note to a much broader audience than usual (only to list
owners where possible, so they can use their discretion about forwarding it
to their lists), since I believe it opens up the possibility for just about
anybody who has used email or Usenet to distribute concert or festival
information previously to submit such information to Musi-Cal. For those of
you have have never seen Musi-Cal, there is some contact information at the
end of the message. This is a one-time mailing from me about this subject.
If you I can followup with an introductory message about Musi-Cal. This
note is long enough as it is, however.
You can now post tour itineraries to Musi-Cal by sending them as email to
itinerary@calendar.com. This mechanism should be useful for people who
don't have the time to manage the other Musi-Cal submission mechanisms
themselves and who don't have access to a Web or FTP server to make raw
itineraries available for my fetchtour software.
The itinerary alias is intended to be a place for people to submit
itineraries on a repetitive basis, not just once, because it involves some
up-front work on my part the first time I receive an itinerary for an
artist.
The requirements for the message formats are pretty flexible, but there are
a few:
* Events should be listed one-per-line
* Events should be in a "well-delimited" format (see below) amenable
to input as raw data to the Musi-Cal Slicer-Dicer.
* The subject and email address in the From: field must always be
the same for different versions of the same artist's itinerary,
typically the name of the performer(s) and the sender's address,
respectively.
* The format of the data must stay the same across multiple
submissions.
Also, if I've never heard of the performer you are submitting for (that is a
*very* good possibility - I don't claim to be any sort of omniscient musical
aficionado) you should give me a few keywords in the first message you send
me that describe the type of music the artist plays, or submit static
information about that artist using the Web form at

The definition of "well-delimited" is purposely a bit vague. In general, I
need to be able to build a pattern that identifies the various fields (date,
city, state, venue and so forth) in the entry. Something like
102995BerkeleyCAFreight&Salvage
isn't properly delimited, although most people can probably read it.
I'm getting pretty good at automatically massaging itineraries into a form
suitable for the Musi-Cal Slicer-Dicer. One rule you must adhere to closely
though is that fields that can contain white space must not be separated
from the next field in the line by white space. For instance, the following
is good:
San Francisco, CA
but the following is bad:
San Francisco CA
The pattern matcher will gobble up the " CA" as part of the city name
because city names can contain white space. Here is an example
well-formatted item for a Joan Osborne date that occurred back in October:
10/12 Norfolk, VA (8pm) Naro Theater
If you are used to posting itineraries in tabular format (nicely lined up in
columns) with only white space between the fields I may be able to massage
it into a form I can use, but I may ask you for some changes in the input.
How does itinerary@calendar.com work? It's magic... :-) Well, not really.
The first time you send an itinerary to the itinerary alias its
subject/email combination won't be recognized and the message will be
forwarded to me. I will then build the necessary framework for input to the
fetchtour software. That and subsequent mailings with the same subject from
the same person will get processed automagically by fetchtour. I will
contact you if I have trouble with your input.
Note: If you choose to use this method of submitting events to Musi-Cal you
will be set up as the reviewer of the output. You will get two to four mail
messages in reply to a single itinerary. The first will identify all the
items that were automatically submitted to the calendar. Normally, you can
just scan that and delete it. There may be situations where it is obvious
that a particular gig has been missed by the pattern matcher, however. If
that happens and you can't figure out why, just let me know. The second
message will be a confirmation of the automatic additions. Again, scan and
delete for the most part. The third message, if necessary, will identify
Slicer-Dicer output that wasn't automatically submitted because warnings or
errors were generated. You should fix the generated add commands (and if
necessary, your raw itinerary data) and submit them yourself or contact me
if you have problems. After you submit the corrections you will receive a
confirmation of those additions.
One common problem people outside the US will have is that I have very
little latitude/longitude data to verify non-US cities. I use a lat/long
check for city/state or city/country combinations as a way to flag possible
misspellings. If I begin to get a lot of input from outside the US I will
just suppress the lat/long check for non-US cities as a short-term
workaround. Ideally, I'd like a good online source of global lat/long data.
If you have any ideas, let me know. Even small amounts of data would be
useful to augment the 400-500 non-US cities I have. (In contrast, I have
138,000 US place name lat/longs thanks to a cheap database available from
the USGS...)
If all the various confirmation replies get to be a problem for people, I
will modify the Slicer-Dicer so the additions it makes on your behalf won't
generate a response. That will reduce the number of reply messages by one,
but the others (direct output of the Slicer-Dicer and confirmation of add
commands you submit) will still be necessary so you can check for mistakes.

ways you can submit items to Musi-Cal:

And while we're on the subject, you all checked out Expressen Fredag's
WWW page (the preview) last week and answered the questions? It'll
be fun to see what it looks like today (premiere).
(Non-swedes: "Expressen Fredag" is the entertainment section in one

Well, what he is talking about is a Finnish (or actually Lappish, to
emphasize their northern origin (and to some extent mine too)) band
called Angelin Tyt|t, or Annel Nieiddat as they are called in their
native Sami tongue ('Girls from Angeli' is what it means
basically). They have three albums out: "Dolla", "Giitu"
and...er... the name of the latest escapes me at the moment.
Their music is based on the traditional Lappish vocal style 'joikhing'
(as the most common English term seems to be), spiced with a bit more
modern elements, like tribal drumming and even some techno/jungle beat
on their newest release.
I'll forward this info to the person requesting it as soon as I get
home where I have the label address etc. but I thought I'd let you
know also.

Subject: Tape chains... let's get them going
Well, whatever happened to them...? So, I think I'll get the snowball rolling.
The last time around these chains were discussed I proposed a tape with
(mainly) Swedish industrial music, and I actually got a few positive responses
to that. Maybe industrial is not the first thing you associate with indie
music, but frankly... it doesn't get much more alternative than this.
Now I've prepared a 100 minutes tape sampler with bands that all are on the
Linkoping based label Cold Meat Industry. So why subject yourself to this,
you may ask. Well, those interested will find that the label "industrial" really
covers a lot of different styles, and honestly I think that there will be a
little for everyone on the tape. It ranges from harsh scourging noise... to
tribal ritualistic percussion... to dark-ambient soundscapes... to Gregorian
chantings. Some bands are overtly satanist, while others are true to the Xtian
faith; all of them have an agenda, and are not in it just for the shock value.
Enough with my ramblings. I want list members that are interested in hooking up
on this tape chain to send a reply to me (not to the list) that includes your
land address. Then I'll prepare a send list, and I'll get back with more info
to all interestees. Mark my words, you're in for a treat :)

Hmmm...somehow I don't think it's really that jazzy (apart from the

sweet disc!

Q. WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT THE GIG TONIGHT?
A. It went well, but there were a couple of misses (that no-one noticed).
The stage swayed a bit too, which made two mineral water and a beer bottle
go overboard. But we were really well met by the staff here, like "Hi!,
here's some food and beer for you..." and so on. Terribly nice!
Q. I NOTICED A PLECTRUM FLYING THROUGH THE AIR...
JL. Yeah, it was mine. I continued to play with my nail like I used to,
so it wasn't too bad. I picked it up when the song ended.
CK. We had a couple, you could've borrowed one from us.
JL. Yeah, but I didn't know that then...
Q. WHAT SONGS DID YOU PLAY?
A. We played 'Telephonic Juncture', 'Broken Babe', 'Stop Droppin In',
'Freeloadin'', 'F, as in Dumped', 'Small Planet', 'Molly Coddle',
'Space Invaders', 'Slut', 'Lo-fi Barbie' and 'Alien Room'. Those
that aren't on our mini-CD will be released on our forthcoming full-
length.
Q. WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
A. Well, all of us are from Lund nowadays, but Johan lives in K{vlinge.
And Christian used to live in Seattle.
Q. THERE'S A NEW GUY ON BASS?
A. Yeah, M}rten L|fvander who played with us on our mini-CD had to do the
military service (fourteen months), so we've got Anders here on bass now.
AT. I play in a band called Blondbelly (also from Lund) as well. We're
releasing an EP on a small label that might just sound a bit like
Weezer, but with a lot of dist. Dist on everything!
Q. HOW ABOUT RELEASES?
A. We've only released the mini-CD, called 'Small Lesbian Baseball Players'
on Bad Taste Records (LOOSER 01), but we'll soon appear on a compilation
CD, also on Bad Taste. There are three bands from the US on that
compilation as well. Our song is a new one, which won't appear on the
full-length, but it isn't bad. We'll let you know how to get it when
you've sent us this interview, ha ha. You have to read about what label
our forthcoming full-length will be out on, because we're not satisified
with the offers we've received so far. It'll be out sometime around may
1996, we think, anyway.

Slut, Molly Coddle, Small Planet, Freeloadin' and Towel (I got you on my
mind).]
Q. SO WE MAY SEE YOU ON, SAY AN AMERICAN LABEL?
A. That's possible. Startrek Management in the US are really interested.
So interested in fact, that they have written sort of an option-contract
with us. The option ends in about six months, and it's only an option
to sign us, not for any records.
Q. HOW DID YOU GET SIGNED TO BAD TASTE?
JH. Well, Bad Taste resided in K{vlinge (they're in Lund these days). We
recorded 'Small Lesbian Baseball Players' (the whole mini-CD) as a
demo, then I went over there on my bike and gave it to them and they
decided to record it on the spot! That's the whole story right there.
Q. ARE YOU TOURING RIGHT NOW?
A. Sort of. We'll play in V{xj| with Fireside and Salt on the 12th, then
we're touring with Starmarket from the 13th to the 15th of december,
maybe. We're not quite sure of that yet.
Q. CHRISTIAN, WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH YOUR HOUSE IN SEATTLE AND PEARL JAM?
CK. You've read the interview in Expressen... that guy didn't have a clue.
Well, to clear things up, our house back in Seattle was not on the
back cover of Pearl Jam's 'Ten', but on a 7" that their fan-club
members (which I was) received, before 'Ten' was released. On the
back of that one, you can see our house.
[Here, Anders picks up a bass and Christian picks up an acoustic guitar,
and starts to play 4-5 new songs.]
CK. One of these will be a hit. I'm sure of it! The other ones, if not
hits, they will be successful at least!
[I can only agree that the songs they played were really good! Look out
for the full-length!]
Q. WHAT FESTIVALS HAVE YOU PLAYED?
A. We opened the Emmaboda festival this year (1995).
Q. WHO AM I TO CALL IF I WANT YOU TO COME AND PLAY?
A. You call us! Luger was really interested in having us on their list
though. They take about fifteen percent for their efforts. Looks like
the best booking company in Sweden right now. Motor is way too
expensive. Their percentage is a lot higher than Luger's.
Q. ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE TO END THIS INTERVIEW WITH?
CK. My little brother went with us to a gig in Gothenburg once and sang
with us when we played a Sebadoh song. We had never rehearsed that
song either. He's pretty amazing. Really fantastic with an electric
guitar as well. Right now, he's looking for people he can play with.
Play his kind of music, that is. But it's pretty hard to find people
like that in Lund.
