Q. WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT THE GIG TONIGHT?
MN. It went really well. And it was fun too. Everyone knew what to do
and the crowd seemed to know all our songs.
E. I didn't hear what I was singing from time to time. I'll be louder
the next time though!
FB. It was the best gig ever. But I want to sing more!
E. I have told him to sing more, but he always comes in at the choruses,
which, I'll admit, is what I want him to. I noticed I slurred a lot, so
maybe that's why he wants to sing more.
FB. That's the effect punch has on you!
E. No... no, I slur anyway! I forget the words, and then I slur. Maybe
it's an age thing. And everything goes too fast live too!
Q. WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
MN. Fredrik is from Pite, and the rest of us are from Ume.
Q. WHAT SONGS DID YOU PLAY?
A. 'Allegiance', 'Rockin To a Lullaby', 'Haven', 'Losefer', 'No Comfort
Holden', 'Now You Know', 'The Bridge', 'Hellstreet', 'Mint Addict',
'I Guess Yes' and 'Bike Helmet'.
Q. WHY DID YOU RE-RECORD 'ALLEGIANCE'?
MN. It was a lot calmer, mushier before. The new recording made it a lot
better. It's got more speed now.
Q. WHAT ABOUT THE NEW TRACK, 'BAY OF SOULS' ON THE LATEST WS COMPILATION?
E. No one (of us) knew anything about the compilation. It was like 'What?
are we included on a new compilation?' It was Mattias who found it in a
record store one day. We have no idea why Jocke released two compilations
in such a short time.

Q. ARE YOU PLAYING IN ANY OTHER BANDS?
E. Well, I play guitar in a band called Carpet People. Only live though,
because they wanted an additional guitar when they play live.
FB. You already know that I play in Starmarket...
Q. FREDRIK IS KIND OF A NEW MEMBER ISN'T HE? WHAT HAPPENED?
MN. Fredrik joined some time before Verse Chorus Verse. In november 1994
if I remember it right. Nils Forsberg, who played bass back then, quit
around that time. Partly because he moved to Stockholm, but mostly because
he felt that nothing really had happened the last three years (of five)
he'd been playing.
Q. HOW ABOUT INFLUENCES?
A. Sonic Youth, William Holden, The Pixies, Wallace Wood, Abba, Thin
Lizzy...
Q. ARE YOU TOURING RIGHT NOW?
MN. Yes, you could say that. We started yesterday in Gvle, where the
audience consisted of about thirty people, so tonight was kind of a
big turnaround for us. Anyway, we have six gigs on this tour. Tomorrow
it's Halmstad, then Gothenburg and Stockholm, at Studion next weekend
(7/10).
Q. HOW ABOUT RELEASES?
A. Demos as well? Okay then. Our first demo was called "Soft Demo"
on Powers of Flowers (POF 001) and it was released in 1991. It had
the tracks 'So Far', 'Happy', 'Soft' and 'Afterglow'. The next release
was a mini LP on Garageland Records called Blithe (BF642), also 1991.
Then came Pagan Rituals Under a Midnight Sun, on West Side (WeCD 038)
1992, Head Is Mighty, West Side (WeCD 057) 1993 and Verse Chorus Verse,
West Side (WeCD 093) 1995. The last two were also released in Japan
on LDC on Pioneer, the first in july and the second in august this year.
Q. ANY COMPILATIONS?
A. Of course. Hmm, North of No South - Compilation One (NONSCD-01)
1992 with 'Ugly' and 'The Vanishing Boy'. On West side, we've been on
West Side Strikes Back Vol IV (WeCD 046) 1993 with 'Wallace Wood'.
We're All Part of a Family (WeCD 073) 1994 with 'Allegiance'. the
23enigma (WeCD 095) 1995 with 'Bay of Souls'. On The Outskirts of a
Small Town... (WeCD 101) 1995 with 'Bay of Souls' and 'I Guess Yes'.
We were also included on a 7" single compilation with The Bear Quartet
and A Shrine on Sticky Records, only released in the UK.
Q. WHY HAVEN'T YOU RELEASED ANY SINGLES OR EPS?
A. It's like this. Jocke is waiting for a label in the U.S. (Alias,
that also handles Archers of Loaf among others) to make up their
minds about signing us or not. Some representatives came over to
Trstocksfestivalen and talked to us. They were really nice. But
we can't release a single before they decide what to do. Jocke is
probably careful with the whole thing. He did call last week and
said that it was "ok" now, but you know how it is...
Q. WHAT FESTIVALS HAVE YOU PLAYED?
A. Hultsfred 1991. Actually, Nils bought a bootleg from that festival
because he'd read we were included on it, but the sound on it was just
too damn lousy. It wasn't even worth the cassette it's recorded on.
Shades of Orange played that year as well. You know that the guy who
played bass is now a member of Popsicle? Well, anyway, then we've played
Dalarocken 1991 and Trstocksfestivalen 1991, 93, 94 and 95. The first
year Trstocksfestivalen was a tent. Ha ha.
E. Trstocksfestivalen is a great happening. And it's free! That's
something we all need more of I think. All ages. That's something we
all need more of as well. It's such a great event. One can see a lot
of bands, and you know you play for an audience who are there to see
you. It's not at all like if one had to pay to get in.
Q. WHAT DO YOU LISTEN TO RIGHT NOW?
E. Smiths, Gorilla Bisquits (with Walter before he joined Quicksand),
Fugazi, Palace Brothers and Crow (from Australia.. they sound like
early Throneberry).
FB. Dinosaur Jr (Bug), Daydream Nation, Sonic Youth, Gorilla Bisquits
(Start Today), Jimi Hendrix (Are You Experienced) and Public Enemy
(It Takes a Nation...).

What a joker! I always though that if Blithe had a vocalist that could
actually sing, then they just might hit it big one day.

I was at Studion. Quite a lot of people, but most just sat around when Blithe
played. Then some Aussie called Paul Kelly entered the stage for a solo set,
and the floor became *packed*. I later found out that Kelly apparently was in
Triffids at some point.

I remember this gig. Blithe rushed through their set, because they -- just
like the rest of the crowd at Dansbanan -- wanted to catch Ride that started
40 minutes later in the Sahara tent.

Hi all,
last night I was listening to the infamous punk rock show "Rakarodeo"
on the radio and Miettinen (the bald guy who hosts it) played some new
Swedish records, including one which he identified as the new ep by
Cinnamon (at least that's what I thought I heard). I guess the song
was called 'Helplessly', or something pretty close... I quite liked
it! Can anyone tell me more?

I don't know, to my knowledge they have released one EP and one album.
What I do know is that the "core" of Cinnamon -- Jiri, Frida, and Bjoern --
are heading to Japan in a short while, thus following in the footsteps of
Cardigans and Happy Dead Men. They will negotiate with Jap record exec's
and do a few acoustic gigs. I wonder why the meekest contingent of Swedish
indie bands appeal so much to the Japs?

It would be a pretty big change from what it's like today, and as
you probably have noticed, some days are without any posts from the
mailing list, so I don't think it's a good solution. You could make
your own filter in your .mailrc file (or equivalent) making every
post from the list go straight to a file, and solve the problem and
get all the posts in one file. Well, it's just a suggestion...

No no, it's not a joke. I remember I saw the entry in the P3 Live
list a couple of weeks ago. Wait a second and I'll see if I still

Subject: Somersault
I just had to post a note about a group from Alingsås called Somersault.
I got a 6-track demo in the mail yesterday called "Ultramarine" (Ludde:
who do you think of? :)) which is fantastic!
If you liked Slowdive a couple of years ago, you should definitely
check out Somersault! I'm in the process of making a home page for
them right now, and I will put a couple of samples from the tape
on that page as well as soon as possible.
To describe them.. well, slowdive guitars (not those neil-walls though)
bright clear female vocals, sided by male vocals here and there
(I think of Bizarre (from Estonia) when I listen to them really...)
Oh hell, well, think of Slowdive/Bizarre, strip the breaking-down-
guitar-walls from their music, and you'll have Somersault.
The tape contains: Mother-of-Pearl, Lachrymose, June, Autumn Swirl,
Gem and Lustre. And it's about 16 minutes.
My definite favourite is "Autumn Swirl" with "Gem" as a strong second.
Those ones are so beautiful, that I won't hesitate to include them
on the Scandinavian Indie - Sweden tape.
I'm working on getting them a gig around here as well, which probably
won't happen before christmas, but the day it does, I dare you all
to miss it!
Isn't anyone on the list from Gothenburg by the way? They said they
have played a lot there. Anyone seen them live?

Just wanted to let you all with ZTV know that they will have
some interviews and mingle-reports from the Mouth tour premiere
that happened here in Linkoping at Herrgar'n last night on
tonight's ZTV Nytt (probably the long news). It's at 19:00
and 01:20. So if you see a fella in an orange Solar Lodge
t-shirt mumbling something about Somersault.. heh, well,
that's me. :)

Yeah, after Slowdive were dropped by Creation they sort of dissolved
and three of the members (the above two + who else?) signed to 4AD as
Mojave 3. First album out now, claimed to be a kind of
country-ambient blend, haven't heard it yet, though.

Hello friends!
I'm back (in case somebody noticed my absence... not likely though :)
According to Robert Cumming:

As Sami already noted, Turku isn't perhaps exactly the ultimate place
for record hunting in Finland. You should have come to Tampere
instead, of course :)
As a matter of fact I haven't seen the said Aknestik single after I
got my copy (secondhand and ultracheap too). I suppose it was for
radio stations more than regular record-buying public. Not many people
in Finland buy singles anyway (especially CD singles with one song + 3
crappy remixes).
I have no idea about a new album, but I hope it's coming out soon. My
sister saw them live some weeks ago and all she had to say was that
all the guys have cut their hair! Well, it was about time... :)

Hehe, well, you hit me on the head with that question as I'm working
on the Mojave 3 discography right now. :) Here's what I know this
far:
The Mojave 3 story starts with Slowdive breaking up in april 1995
after being kicked off the Creation label. Rumors say that it was
because of the low sales of "Pygmalion". I say Creation is digging
it's own grave. But that's another story. Well, Neil and Rachel
decided to go on, and sent a demo tape to the 4AD label, which got
them signed. They brought Ian with them. I have no idea what happened
to Christian Savill and Nick Chaplin though. Anyone on the list?
Anyway, they started the recording of their now released (European
release: 16-Oct-95) CD "Ask Me Tomorrow" (CAD 5013, Time: 41:13)
(US release: 16-Jan-96) right away, and chose the name "Mojave"
(pronounced Mo-ha-ve, ha like in hard and ve like in very). They
recorded a promo, which almost made it outside the 4AD headquarters
when they learned of a German band with the same name, so they quickly
changed their name to "Mojave 3", and the promo was either deleted
or re-pressed with the name changed. Since then, they have been
included on several promos and samplers, "...think i'm getting the
hang of it" CD : 1995 US 4AD (PRO-CD-7625) (promo) with "Love Songs
On The Radio" though the track is uncredited on the disc and sleeve.
FTWW 23, 4 track 12" promo for the "Facing The Wrong Way" sampler,
Mojave 3 track "Love Songs On The Radio" and the mentioned sampler
"Facing The Wrong Way" (FTWW1) with "Love Songs On The Radio".
They have also recorded a promotion video for that song, which was
first broadcasted on MTV Europe's "Alternative Nation" on the 5th
of November 1995.
The band is:
Rachel Goswell (vocals, guitar), Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar),
Christopher Andrews (keyboard) and Ian McCutcheon (drums)
with Rachel, Neil and Ian from the now defunct Slowdive.
Here's a short review of "Ask Me Tomorrow" I found floating somewhere:

"A bit of a throw-back - the experimental tinkering about of "Pygmalion"
or parts of "Souvlaki" has gone, this is stripped-down guitar, piano and
drums. Neil does a pretty good job of singing in tune, Rachel's voice
is as wonderful as ever, the songs are fine, but it is a leap sideways
rather than forward. I'll listen to it a lot, but it hasn't surprised
me in the way "Pygmalion" did."

I haven't had time enough to finish the work on their page, but I'll
try to be ready with it (samples and a picture I guess) tomorrow.

Well, Slowdive and Swervedriver are not the only bands dropped by
Creation... I heard that Ride will soon leave the label as well (not
surprising after their last album, heh :) ) They should be releasing
one more live album on Creation (in the classic 'contract killer'
style) and then move on to some other label, the name escapes me.

(you get to it from the homepage as usual), and added a working
copy of the Somersault page for those who are interested.

but will be completed as I get information to add to it.

If someone could help me with list of clubs/venues in Stockholm (addresses,
phone-numbers, fax-numbers... ie. any kind of information) that have some sort
of "indie" connection, I would be eternally grateful! It's for a friend who's
coming to Sweden next year, and who's looking for some kind of job at
such places in Stockholm.
I know there are lists with such information in "fredags-bilagorna" in
the Stockholm editions of the evening and morning papers, as well as
"Nöjesguiden". I just can't get them here in small Linköping. :(

Yes, I have been building this page for half a year now. I would be very
thankful if someone could give me more direct info than I have (from the
records company) on the page. I don't intend to be the universal source
of knowledge of the Cardigans. In fact, being French in Sweden for about
2 years, I don't know much about the pop info, or the places I could get
info on the band or on other Scandinavian pop-bands...
So, if you have some info or comments about the page, let me know...

Could this be the same World of Leather that played after Naked in GBG?
Hard to believe..
I am a Beatles fan since the age of 5 (of 26) and I listen to a lot of
bands that surely must have heard of Beatles ;) (e.g. Posies, TFC...)
But, World of Leather sucked. For sure. Like totally. (spot the film..)
Sounded like any average shitty english pub rock band and looked and
performed like a cross between the comic strip's Bad News and Status Quo.
No Beatles influences spotted.
BTW, did anyone but me attend the gig of the century, TFC at Studion?

Well, I find it very hard to believe that more than one band with that
name exists...
I don't know how they are live, since I unfortunately missed them when they
were here in Lund. All I can say is: take a listen to their album and
judge for yourself! I'd say it's bery Beatles-esque and also with some
influences from Bowie. They also happen to have some connections to
the Fab four. The lead singer's mother went to the same class as John
Lennon and his father worked at the place where the Beatles were
rehearsing before they got known outside of Liverpool.

It was a concert of two parts. One where the band was playing, just as
usual with Liam singing. And one where Noel was sitting on a stool playing
acoustic guitar and singing. The Liam part was great, the Noel part wasn't
that great. Liam was in his usual mood. "I don't need you throwing things
at me, ye bastards!" The crowd kept themselves busy with football type
chanting in between songs.
It was pretty much a routine gig for Oasis, but then they don't usually
do much at their gigs, do they. They just stand there.

hello. yes. i was there. sadly though i thought tfc didn't do much for
me. although i must admit i was pretty tired by the time they came on.
but, really, i didn't like it very much. they sound *exactly* the same as
they have for, what, five years and, well, i am not all that into them
anymore. they sure looked like that they had a great time, as did the
audience. i just wished they would've changed a bit since i last saw
them. but they haven't and i feel like i've "outgrown" them. it kind of
sad. they used to be one of my favourite bands (circa _bandwagonesque_).
hmm. but. did anyone of you who where there catch the opening
band the inbreds? wooo were these guys ever fun to watch. i love them.
bass and drums. simple and fuzzy. and oh, pretty beatlesesque.. ;)
they'll be included in the 'zine i am doing. like you'd care, eh?

I saw them in Malmo nine days ago, and I must say they were great, all
three of them! Teenage Fanclub was the main reason for me to be there
and they were also, IMHO, the best band. But you're right about the
Inbreds! They were really something! At the show I bought their
album "Hilario" which is a compilation of old material.
Sorry for the lack of _Scandinavian_ indie.

World Of Leather has made two albums. The first one, "St.Mark's Place" is
a lot better than anything Teenage Fanclub will ever do. The second one,
"Jesus Christ Superstore" is not as good, and could probably be described as
some kinda pub rock (or whatever the oh-so-biased previous writer described
them as). I saw them live at Studion some weeks ago, and they were pretty
good live too (and played mostly songs from the first album, which made me
happy).
