Fireside's 4-track cd-single is WeCD 60 !

However, there is really only one good song on this cds,
drop my shoulder, the rest (Downer, Valid Set and the fourth
escapes my mind for the moment) are not very well worked
thru.

The vocals is acceptable on Drop My Shoulder, but sounds
embarrasing on the rest.

BUT there are many good songs not yet released, and therefore
I can recommend ya'll to check out the forthcoming cd-single
'Jupiter' and the full-length album 'Fantastic Four'.

One song that I've only heard live, 'Monstersong' is one
of the best songs I've heard in this genre, where the skills
of Fireside comes to its rights.
(This song could be heard on a live show that was broadcasted
on swedish radio not long ago.....)

best regards, Petter.

Hello!

I've heard a rumour that Popsicle will release
a new album one of these weeks. Could it be true?!

Yes it certainly is true! It's called Abstinence, and it got pretty a
pretty good review in POP (7/10).
It's supposed to be released on the 7th of April here in Sweden.

Hej mina v{nner,

Here it is! Having finished my other major project of the last 4.5
years (my thesis that is, phew!), I've finally got round to finishing
my attempt at translating the lyrics from Bob Hund's debut CD. I
would *really* appreciate any comments on the translation -- I am no
expert at Swedish, at least not yet anyway. Then maybe if there's
space at Wisconsin we can add it to the lyrics ftp server there! I
bet there's not much other Swedish indie music there yet...

Hey all, I actually have something superrelevant!!

I wrote about the MERMAID records compilation CD, "He Didn't Even
Draw a Fish on My Shower Curtain" in my newspaper column, and sent a copy
to all the contributors. This week, letters arrived from some of them,
containing music! Some of them sent me 7"es from Noet Lachten Records
in Holland!! This is wonderful, it's a wonderful pop label, does anyone
know of it?
They sent me:
Crockett and Jones "Peter Ustinov"
de Ja-Knikkers "Cactus inne Potje!" , it shows a cactus in a toilet bowl on
the front
Four One and Onlys: the clouds smell like sauerkraut
		    Double Hit
Euh...Euh... BEUH!! (said by a cartoon cow)
		    I Ludicrous
		    Eiswurfel Tontrager (is this right?)
		    the Merricks
		    Jowe Head (of TV Personalities)
		    Kitchen Cynics (from Alan)

Some of that is in German, and Alan is in Scotland, but hey! How's that
for Scandinavian Indie? Not bad for a kid in California?

in de zomer van 1986 werd voor het eerst het idee geopperd om eens een
echte carnavalsingle uit te brengen

German labels I know of: Roman Cabbage Vinyl, Blam a Bit, Little Teddy

is anyone into this stuff?

Subject: Whipped Cream

Another review of Whipped Cream's latest - "HorseMountain" from the evening
paper "Expressen" 25/3 1994 -

"In a shoe store in Boden last week, the middle aged guy behind the counter
suddenly put a tape in the tape deck and played Whipped Creams brilliant
cover of 'Observatory Crest' in high volume. The Gothenburgers' psychedelic
claws cuts deeper into the swedish soul that one would suspect. The new
'HorseMountain' on the other hand, pulls in another direction. Away from
psychedelic mist and vague hints, towards the hard chords and the early
70's hard-rock. And of course, there's even a drum solo. You can almost
hear Mountin, Cream and sometimes even Black Sabbath in the background.
The style feeling is impressive and several of the songs, amongst other
the dark 'Spare Me', the rolling 'Fresh' and acoustic 'You Know The Time
Is Right', would have had given places on their albums. The question is,
where would Whipped Cream be if they used their talent and imagination
to look forward instead of back." (3 out of 5 points)

And another one from the local paper "Ostgota Correspondenten" 31/3 1994 -

"I Never ever thought that I would write something positive about a
record that contains something of the most meaningless I know in music -
a drum solo. But when Whipped Creams third album is here, it is time.
To do the unexpected and create music straight from your head isn't
very usual these days in the music world. Too much is formatted after
special designs and often unbeleivably predictable. Fortunately, there
are exceptions and Whipped Cream is one of those - because of that,
I can stand a drum solo in one of their songs. After two strong albums
filled with floating new-psychedelia they take a new step, partly. Many
songs and arrangements have a lot more distinct structures, and the
sound is more hard-hitting. There are loads of parallells to groups
like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Though streamlined hard-rock isn't
what this is. On the contrary. There are mountains of crazy ideas,
unexpected turns and the psychedelic vein still exists at the bottom.
The rougher tracks are mixed with pop-songs and the title track even
breaths somewhat of country. Sometimes, I think of what the "spacerockers"
Hawkwind have made in their best moments. Everything is preformed
in an excellent way, with an extra 'plus' to the guitar-phantom
Jorgen Cremonese. He's not only this country's most cocky guitarrist,
he's a brilliant producer as well (here together with Nille Perned).
There aren't many people that could find the same brilliant combination
of weight, atmosphere and force." (4 out of 5 points)

Sorry for the bad translations and probably english as well. I really need
to get myself a swedish-english dictionary one of these days.

Subject: Souls Interview

Interview with "Souls" 4 February 1994 - by Erik Soderstrom & Erica Lofstrom
after a gig at "Herrgar'n", Linkoping, Sweden.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Souls are:
Johan Karlsson (bass) Andreas Danielsson (guitar)
Cecilia Nordlund (vocals & guitar) Tony Karlsson (drums)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT THE GIG TONIGHT?
A. Stage-diving is always fun. That people dare to stagedive when we're
wearing suits. Maybe we're looking like a 'dansband' (folk music band)
No, but it was a good audience. Students. They're fun.

Q. ARE YOU STUDENTS?
A. [Cecilia: I've been one.] [Andreas: Me to.] [Johan: Yeah but not a
university student.] [Tony: Ah, then I've also been a student!]
[Cecilia: I'm the only one who has been a university student.]
[Tony: The rest of us is so low-educated...] [Johan: (in a southern
old man's swedish accent) We think it's a lot more fun to drink
alcohol and look at the girls, than to play music]

Q. PRETTY MUCH PEOPLE HERE TONIGHT, IS IT ALWAYS LIKE THIS?
A. There has always been more people than we or those who have arranged
the gigs have expected. More and more for every gig actually, and
that makes you feel really good. We don't know why. [Andreas
Danielsson: We know why.. it's because we're the best.]

Q. NO EXTRA NUMBERS, HOWCOME?
A. I think we gave them what they could handle. I don't think the audience
could take any more now. I think it was too much at once. We don't play
any extra numbers normally because we play a shorter set than most,
but we play as much as possible during that time. Then we finish, because
what the audience really want is to buy beer. When they have watched
   the gig I mean.

Q. HOW DID YOU GET THIS GIG HERE AT HERRGAR'N?
A. Bob Hund was scheduled for this night, but apparently, their bass-player
broke his hand, arm, or whatever it was, his brain. So we got to play
instead. And I think we're a lot better than them, so I don't think
the audience was sorry about that. No, but we were scheduled to play
here in any case, but we didn't know that it would be so soon.

Q. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME 'SOULS'?
A. Actually, it's funny you should ask that. You know there are loads of
bands with 'Soul' in their names, like Soul Asylum, De La Soul etc.
We were surprised that no-one had selected just 'Souls', so we grabbed
   it.

Q. WHERE ARE YOU FROM? HELSINGBORG OR GOTHENBURG?
A. We're from the universe, but now we live in Gothenburg.

Q. HAVE YOU RELEASED SOMETHING? ALBUMS OR SINGLES?
A. No, nothing like that. Yet. We have had two songs on two compilation CDs.
"It's Absence" on Snapology and "Boring In A Proper Way" on Life Is A
Joke. There's a funny story behind the LIAJ compilation by the way.
You might have heard that the track really is a cover of New Order's
"5-8-6". That was not the track we wanted on the compilation. The guys
who compiled the compilation selected the wrong track from our tape but
put the right title on the CD. We've only made two covers ever, and it's
typical that they had to make a mistake and select one of those!

Q. WILL YOU RELEASE SOMETHING IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
A. Yes. A single, hopefully in April. We haven't decided what to put on it
yet though, but it feels right. It feels right to release something now.
Wait and see. [Andreas: It will probably be in May.]

Q. YOU HAVEN'T BEEN SIGNED TO A LABEL YET..
A. I'm not so sure about that... but I won't say more. We're saved, but
we don't know when there will be a release.

Q. WHEN DID SOULS START?
A. Souls was formed in 1991, about two and a half, three years ago.

Q. CECILIA, YOU USED TO SING JAZZ-IMPROVISED POP BEFORE..
A. Where have you heard that? What sources? No, but that's true. But I don't
sing that nowadays. Sometimes I do, but what I sing comes from my heart,
and I don't think about what type of music I'm singing to. I just sing.
But I like jazz, that is true. I don't know if it shows when I'm singing,
but it isn't something I'm ashamed about.

Q. DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF IDOLS?
A. I hope we will be one day. That's what we're after. To be an
idol, to be in Okej [Swedish popular music magazine for teens], the
middle pages. [Cecilia: And at the same time we fart like everyone
else, you know? It's good to know about that yourself.] [Andreas:
I don't fart anymore.] [Cecilia: But of course!]

Q. DO YOU GET ANY FAN MAIL?
A. We've actually received two from lonely young pimple-faced
men with glasses in Kalix [northern town in Sweden]
No, but we have only two songs out on CD, on compilations, that
aren't very representative any more, but those who have heard them
writes us. So I guess there are two who have heard them now.

Q. BEFORE THE GIG, YOU COULD NOTICE A SCENT OF KAOS.. [they had misplaced
an amplifier and had to borrow one from a local band (Cloudberry Jam)]
A. That is probably what people remember about Souls, Kaos. We can't
change that. We have tried, really. Talked to each other. But nothing
happens. We say 'well, we got to do something about this' but no-one
   has the energy to start.

Q. ANY SPECIAL THINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED WHEN YOU HAVE PLAYED LIVE?
A. Yeah. Once, in Simrishamn [Sweden] something really funny
happened. Or rather, didn't happen. We came in on the scene,
looked at all the people in the audience sitting down, and started
to play. After a couple of songs, we started to wonder if they would
ever move, you know? But they didn't! Through the whole gig, no-one
moved! They just sat there. We didn't know what to think!
   Pretty interesting experience I think.

Q. WHY DO YOU PLAY?
A. It's because we want Lind Norrman [has a column in the evening paper
'Expressen' about indie music] to write about us. Yes, and
Eva Kvanta, in that magazine, what was it called now, 'Snopp'?
[roughly translated: 'Dick'] [they're making fun of a magazine called
'Pop'] [all of this said very very late in the evening]

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
After a while (and a couple of beers more) they said that the label they
have been signed to was 'Telegram Records', which later was announced on
the 31:st of March.
