21 February 2024 - Sweden's newspapers
The Royal Library in Stockholm relaunches the website tidningar.kb.se for digitized newspapers with a new name ”Svenska tidningar” (was: Svenska dagstidningar) and a new time horizon of 100 years (was 115 years). Suddenly, you can read all about the Great War.
14 February 2024 - Finland's Swedish newspapers
Finland's National library announces (and also the Swedish Literary Society) that all newspapers in the Swedish minority language have now been digitized, a total of 6 million pages, making up 30% of all digitized newspapers of Finland, and those from 1949 or earlier are openly available.

Our webserver can once again be reached by IPv6 after a two-year hiatus (compare August 2013, December 2021). Nobody has complained about missing IPv6 in this time.

Project Runeberg's website finally transitions from unencrypted http to encrypted https, using Certbot from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and Let's Encrypt.
27 June 2023 - Swedish newspapers
Sweden's Royal Library announced that all Swedish newspapers until 1906 have now been digitized and are freely available online, a total of 6.6 million pages. Much of the newspapers from the 20th century remains to be digitized. So far, a total of 34 million newspaper pages have been digitized, but those less than 115 years old are not openly available. (The cut-off slides forward day by day.)

15 April 2023 - Schück & Warburg
Gothenburg University library has generously digitized the 3rd edition of Henrik Schück and Karl Warburg's Illustrerad svensk litteraturhistoria (7 volumes, 4,808 pages, 1926—1932), a wonderful source of knowledge on Swedish literature. We have imported their scans and OCR text, made a structured and linked table of contents, and started to proofread the text. Among our first books in the 1990s was Karl Warburg's compact Svensk litteraturhistoria i sammandrag (230 pages, 1904), but this is 20 times bigger.
12 April 2023 - Call for digitization in Sweden
In an opinion article, the secretary general of the Swedish library association Björn Orring asks Hur ska regeringen ta sig an digitaliseringen av kulturarvet? (How will the government address the digitization of cultural heritage? IA). There is a new Swedish government, but funding for large-scale digitization is still lacking.
17 February 2023 - 3,000,000 pages with OCR text
This is 93% of our 3.22 million pages in facsimile. An effort was made to add OCR text to various books that didn't have it, including many printed in fraktur / blackletter.
February 2023 - Tags for speaker, stage
To mark up drama, two new tags are introduced: <speaker> (who is speaking) and <stage> (stage instructions, non-spoken words). (Both are already used in TEI XML mark-up, which we have not implemented, but use as a source of inspiration in this case.) In the HTML that we generate, both are rendered as italics. The actual lines spoken by actors are not marked up. During proofreading, statistics on speakers are available, as seen in this screenshot (1. Buttons for adding the mark-up. 2. Mark-up seen in the text. 3. Stats button. 4. Number of occurrences of the tags in this page. 5. Number of occurring speakers.) from the proofreading of this page.
January 2023 - Datasets
Salmonens Konversationsleksikon, that huge Danish encyclopedia, is converted to a single file with one line per article, to facilitate analysis and experimentation. Perhaps this is a pattern that can be repeated for other works? Keep an eye on our new page about Datasets for Natural Language Processing and Text Mining.
October 2022 - Support Ukraine
Project Runeberg cancels this year's annual fundraiser and instead urges support for organizations that help Ukraine to win this war.
5 August 2022 - Nordisk familjebok 4th ed.
Twenty years after the 1st and 2nd edition (20 + 38 volumes) were digitized, we add the 4th edition (22 volumes, 12,986 pages, 1951) of Nordisk familjebok to our collections. In February, two other smaller Swedish encyclopedias were digitized: Bonniers konversationslexikon (13 volumes, 10,892 pages, 1922—1929) and Åhlén & söners uppslagsbok (13 volumes, 3,990 pages, 1931—1933), making us ever more encyclopedic.
20 June 2022 - Call for digitization in Sweden
Librarians from six Swedish academies write an opinion article: Öppna bibliotekens skattkammare (Open up the treasures of our libraries, IA).
2 June 2022 - Swedish 19th century periodicals
Within the cooperation "DST" (digitalisering av det svenska trycket), 25 Swedish periodicals from the latter half of the 19th century have been digitized. Announcement (Internet Archive), list of titles and years. The list links to some titles that have only been digitized within Project Runeberg (e.g. Hvar 8 dag, Svea, Svenska Familj-journalen), but without mentioning our effort.
28 April 2022 - SMoK
The final two volumes (for a total of 8) of Svenska Män och Kvinnor are digitized. Printed in 1954 and 1955, they are not yet 70 years old, but we see no reason to wait.
March 2022 - Call for digitization in Sweden
Once again, leading Swedish librarians write an opinion piece (Internet Archive) about the need to digitize Swedish literature, positioning themselves as talkers rather than doers.
19 December 2021 - Stella gives up
Old server Stella dies with hardware problem from old age, just before the Christmas break. New stand-by server Ellen takes over on January 2, 2022. The most recent uploads had not been backed up, and needed to be uploaded again. Configuration for IPv6 traffic, enabled in August 2013, is accidentally lost in this change and continued only in February 2024.

August 2021 - List all pages of subchapters
In an electronic facsimile edition, when a chapter (e.g. Två naturdikter) contains subchapters (e.g. 1. Månsken), the indented lines in the table of contents used to only list the first of the pages, but that limitation was removed. This means the overlapping page sequence 188, 189, 190, ... will now appear twice.
21 June 2021 - Juridikbok
A new Swedish non-profit organization "Stiftelsen för tillgängliggörande av juridisk litteratur" opens the website juridikbok.se where initially 80 Swedish books (from 1897 to 2012) on law and jurisprudance are made available for free in PDF format with scanned images and OCR text. A few of them are out of copyright, but most are not; these books are released under a CC-BY-NC 4.0 license. The organization is a self-governed foundation (not a membership association) with board members from law scholars, university libraries, courts of law, and Sveriges Advokatsamfund (the Swedish bar association).
March 2021 - Wikisource uses style sheets
Wikisource introduces a system of CSS style sheets per book, described in Help:Page styles. Project Runeberg has nothing similar. Is it a success that should be copied?
1 March 2021 - All Swedish 19th century fiction
Litteraturbanken announces (Internet Archive copy) that a new three-year research project "Nya vägar till det förflutna" (new paths to the past, description, Internet Archive copy) intends to digitize all Swedish 19th century fiction and to make it freely available through Litteraturbanken and Alvin. The first release is 1000 books from 1850-1880, adding to the existing 5000 books already in Litteraturbanken. The format is facsimile with raw OCR. Part of this first batch is the short story Birger Jarl from 1854 by an anonymous author.
4 January 2021 - Call for digitization in Sweden
Leaders of five Swedish heritage institutions, among them the national archivist and national librarian, in an opinion article in newspaper Dagens Nyheter demand that Sweden should digitize its cultural heritage content. (article, Internet Archive copy) (In any normal country, this should be their job and taxpayers would start to ask why they aren't doing it. The one that takes the initiative would be promoted and the others would be replaced. But in Sweden they talk to each other, ensuring that nobody is doing too much on their own, and together they write an opinion article. Compare the declaration on 28 January 2020, below, which is also a joint statement without any visible action.)

Our old server Mirabell (webserver 2008-2013, backup 2013-2020) is finally retired and replaced by Ellen, a virtual computer in the cloud. Also, on December 19, server Stella moves to a new computer room.
October 2020 - DHN 2020
At the October 2020 (postponed from March 2020 by the coronavirus pandemic) conference in Riga on Digital Humanities in the Nordic Countries, a team from Gothenburg presents a report on "Supervised OCR Post-Correction" (report, 14 pages, PDF, written in November 2019), which makes use of proofread texts from Project Runeberg.
8 October 2020 - OCR statistics
Due to old and inaccurate cached-status.txt files, the reported number of pages with OCR text was understated by circa 80,000. When these files were removed, forcing a recount, it appears as if the count suddenly jumped from 2.68 million to 2.76 million, reducing the number of pages lacking OCR from 0.40 to 0.32 million. Other page counts (total, indexed, proofread) did not change.
August 2020 - Allkunne
Allkunne was launched in 2009 as the first encyclopedia ever in Nynorsk (apart from Nynorsk Wikipedia), the second language of Norway. On 22 August 2020 it was announced (IA) that it becomes a part of Store Norske Leksikon, which since 2014 has a sustainable non-commercial model for funding from universities and charitable foundations.

A paper on Making a Swedish BERT (5 pages, PDF) is presented in ArXiv by a team from the Royal Library.

25 May 2020 - Lex.dk
Danish encyclopedic website lex.dk is launched, presenting the content from Den Store Danske, Dansk Biografisk Leksikon, Trap Danmark and several other classic Danish reference works, open-for-all and non-commercially, following the Norwegian model of snl.no. The site belongs to a non-profit organization, Foreningen Lex.dk, formed by Danish universities and publishers. Press release in Danish.

28 January 2020 - Declaration of intention - Sweden
In a press release (Internet Archive copy), the Royal Library in Stockholm and five Swedish university libraries (Göteborg, Lund, Stockholm, Umeå, Uppsala) declare their intention to digitize all Swedish imprints from the beginning in the 15th century. They have no budget and no time schedule, but they have appointed a coordination committee with the power to appoint working groups for specific subprojects.
As a follow-up, Stockholm University Library in a podcast on March 9, 2020 (Internet Archive copy, Soundcloud, Soundcloud via Internet Archive) talks about the digitization of old dissertations that started in 2011, how that became controversial and how the library reacted to that.
Yet another press release was published on June 8, 2021, but nothing new has happened.
19 November 2019 - Broken links to kb.dk
Denmark's Royal library changes its online catalog (from rex.kb.dk to soeg.kb.dk) and all library records get new identifiers, breaking 349 outgoing links from our website (Metadata fields IMAGE_SOURCE and MARC). With time we need to manually update these links.

At the March 2019 conference in Copenhagen on Digital Humanities in the Nordic Countries, a project for an "enhanced OCR process" (report, 12 pages, PDF) is presented by a team from Sweden's Royal Library (funding in 2018). What they have done is to postprocess the OCR output from existing software.
At the same conference, a paper on "Open Source Tesseract in Re-OCR of Finnish Fraktur" is presented by a team from the national library of Finland (report, 13 pages, PDF).

25 January 2019 - Statistics on characters and words
The proofreading tool's "Stats" button for statistics on character and word occurrences (see January 2013) has been modified to cover an entire volume (a whole book) if you specify src=.../ without any page number after the slash. What happens is that you get the text from all pages in the book (which might be megabytes) in the text area and a simplified form that only has the "Stats" button. So far there are no links to this function, you have to know it and manually alter the URL. It might be useful to those who know that it exists. (Copying megabytes of text to a form and then submitting it back to the server is not the most efficient way to produce these reports. Just a few years ago, it would have seemed unrealistic. But it works fine and it was the quickest way to implement it.)
15 January 2019 - SMoK
Most Swedish historians and librarians know the abbreviation SMoK for Svenska män och kvinnor (Swedish Men and Women), an 8-volume biographic dictionary published in the 1940s. We have started to digitize the first four volumes, which are now more than 70 years old.
10 December 2018 - Dictionary search
A new search function has been developed for dictionaries, based on their tables of content. The search doesn't find a word that is in a dictionary, but suggests a page where the user can start to look for it. A search box is found at the top of the Tema Dictionaries page. All search functionality was converted to UTF-8.

11 September 2018 - Lagen.nu
The website lagen.nu, presenting the full text of Swedish laws, is relaunched (as tested since November 2017, vad är nytt?) and now also contains many documents that were important in writing the laws, such as 5769 official government reports (Statens offentliga utredningar, SOU), some of which are also available from us. This is based on PDFs scanned by the Royal Library, but with new OCR.

At the March 2018 conference in Helsinki on Digital Humanities in the Nordic Countries, "Creating and Using Ground Truth OCR Sample Data for Finnish Historical Newspapers and Journals" (report, 7 pages, PDF) is presented by a team from the national library of Finland.

The Swedish parliament (Riksdagen) announces that it has digitized 3 million pages of its documents from 450 years (1520-1970) in cooperation with the Royal (national) library, riksdagstryck.kb.se

February 2018 - Svenskt porträttarkiv
A formal membership association is formed to support the project Svenskt porträttarkiv (Swedish portrait archive), started as an informal Facebook group by Omar Henriksson a few years earlier. The archive contains over 500,000 portraits of historic Swedes found in various books. Some articles in Swedish: April 2017 (podcast), May 2017, February 2018.
1 February 2018 - Bokhylla
The Norwegian national library (Nasjonalbiblioteket) announces that it has now digitized all Norwegian literature up to the year 2000, some 250,000 volumes (but not including all journals). Older, out-of-copyright works are freely available to the whole world and more recent works are freely available to users with Norwegian IP addresses through an agreement with copyright organizations. Tables of content (indexes) now cover one million or 40 percent of our 2.5 million scanned pages. For the other 60 percent you need to flip pages or use full text search.

October 2015 - Detect alphabet clashes
The "Stats" button in proofreading (see January 2013) detects clashes between Latin and Cyrillic letters in the same word and shows them in boldface. This is an essential function for proofreading Swedish-Russian dictionaries. Cyrillic А looks like Latin A, but they are two different characters. If you search for one, you might not find the other.

June 2015 - Wikipedia drops HTTP
Since 2011, Wikipedia can be accessed through both unencrypted http:// and encrypted https:// URLs, but in June 2015, the unencryted HTTP is dropped. (Project Runeberg only uses HTTP.)

Proofreading proceeds with slightly more than 20,000 pages per year.

The Finland-Swedish childrens magazine Nya Trollsländan for 1888 is the 5000th volume uploaded to our website.

From now, our website is also available by IPv6, Internet Protocol version 6. Initially only 0.5 percent of all web requests use IPv6 and the rest use the traditional IPv4.

17 December 2012 - Unicode conversion
This video (Ogg Vorbis format, 1366×768 pixels, 8 minutes, 35 megabytes) explains in Swedish how the texts we scanned before 2005 are being converted from ISO 8859-1 (Latin-1) to UTF-8 (Unicode). Together they constitute one fifth of our collection, or 200,000 scanned pages out of one million.

22 November 2012 - 1,000,000 pages in facsimile
This page from volume 4 of the collected works of August Blanche was the one millionth page in our collection, scanned by Peter.
20 November 2012 - 250,000 proofread pages
At the end of the day, we had 250,061 proofread pages, which is a little more than one quarter of our entire collection. It seems the very 250,000th page to be proofread, by Ralph just after noon, was page 9 of Minnen av och om Emil Key, an autobiography in Swedish first published in 1916.

The hardware mentioned there are the Canon DR-160M scanner and a Hewlett-Packard PC (named "Ester") with a 2 TB SATA3 disk from Hitachi, 8 GB RAM and an Intel Core i7-2600 CPU at 3.40 GHz. Both work just fine ten years later, but support for the operating system Microsoft Windows 7 ended in January 2020.

The page "Walfischfinne-Wallöffnung" in the German-Swedish dictionary (1932) was scanned page No. 750,000 to be presented in facsimile.
16 March 2012 - Svenskt biografiskt lexikon (SBL)
The Swedish biographic dictionary (33 volumes, each 800 pages, a total of 25,000 articles, covering surnames A-S) is made available for free online by the National archive (Riksarkivet). The project was started in 1917 by a private publisher, who later abandoned it. In 1962 it was transformed into a government agency, in 1998 a CDROM edition of the first 31 volumes was published for sale (which delayed the online version), and from 2009 it is part of the National archive.

The opening of a new blog on digitization workflows (in Swedish) by five Swedish university libraries (Göteborg, Lund, Stockholm, Umeå, Uppsala). They are part of a project funded by the Royal Library, which started with an invitation for tenders (PDF) for scanning equipment in February 2010. The contract (PDF), signed in May 2010, was won by Treventus Mechatronics of Austria. The outcome of the procurement process was described as successful by IDG in August 2010, with the price of 850,000 SEK (less than 100,000 euro) per scanning robot. In May 2011, some of the first blog posts indicate a desire to use other equipment and methods than these robots: "Även om vårt samarbetsprojekt har sin början i den gemensamma upphandling vi gjort av digitaliseringsrobot tänker vi oss alla flera metoder för bildfångst, där roboten är en källa av flera."

The Swedish language branch of Wikisource, the digitization platform of the Wikimedia Foundation, celebrates ten thousand proofread pages (blog post in Swedish), making Swedish the 7th most active language in Wikisource. 7500 pages were proofread in the last 12 months.

Final report (PDF, in Swedish) from a joint digitization project at Linköping public library and Uppsala university library, funded by the Royal Library. A total of 2000 pages were digitized. The report discusses how small libraries can participate in digitization. One book that was digitized here, containing 200 pages, was independently proofread in Wikisource: Jacob Philip Tollstorp, Beskrifning öfver Linköping (1834).

diagram At the end of 2009, Project Runeberg contains 581,000 scanned pages. As can be seen from the diagram (click for a larger version), we scanned 100,000 pages per year until the end of 2005, when we reached 400,000. After that, we have done half speed. We really should index, OCR and proofread each page, but these tasks are lagging behind. Proofreading has been going at a very steady rate of 25,000 pages per year, and is now at 176,000.

Asked by local newspaper Östgöta Correspondenten (Linköping, Sweden) to comment on the proposed settlement in the class action suit against Google Book Search, Project Runeberg's founder Lars Aronsson says it's about time that somebody starts to scan literature on a large scale, and that a copyright law reform is needed. (Article copied without permission, just to illustrate the case.)

Munin is not only one of Odin's far-seeing ravens from Norse mythology, but also a free software for system monitoring graphs. This is now installed on Project Runeberg's server and available on runeberg.org/admin/munin/. Apart from the general purpose graphs showing disk, CPU, memory, database and network performance, there is also one that shows the proofreading activity per hour from our recent changes log.
23 February 2007 - 100,000 proofread pages
At 7:42 AM local Swedish time, a page in the article on Livonia in Nordisk familjebok (2nd edition, volume 16, columns 837-838, printed in 1912) becomes our 100,000th proofread page.
14 February 2007 - Scanned by
Recently Project Runeberg has started to copy scanned images from the Internet Archive, the University of Michigan, and Google Book Search. Now a Metadata item is introduced for specifying the IMAGE_SOURCE and a little icon that links back to this source together with an acknowledgement is presented at the end of the "preface to the electronic edition" of works such as birgitta, ivar, poncelet, and sigdrama.

This small encyclopedia in four volumes is our first work in the Finnish language since 1996, and our first ever in the UTF-8 (Unicode) character set. Since our start in 1992 we have standardized on the 8-bit character set ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1), so this is a big change. Some other works are also converted to UTF-8, among the early ones are Musik-Lexikon (March 2) and Salmonsens konversationsleksikon (March 21). We expect to use both character sets side by side in the foreseeable future.

Four new 200 GB disks are installed in our Fatabur server as a RAID-5 combination providing 550 GB of extra storage. These disks, controllers, and backup tapes are purchased for funds raised from donations during the fall.

Project Runeberg's digital facsimile editions now comprise 100,000 book and magazine pages. With roughly 20,000 pages per linear meter of shelving ("hyllmeter"), this amounts to 5 meters. The e-texts produced without facsimile images (primarily before 1998) are not included in this number. Volunteers do the detailed indexing and proofreading of the facsimile scanned books. Their daily progress are presented on the pages Recent Changes and Proofreading status.

Facsimile images have been scanned of all volumes (20 + 38) of Nordisk familjebok. This is a goal that we have dreamed about the last eight or nine years.

Sweden's biggest daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter publishes the article "Ugglan" hoar gratis på nätet about Project Runeberg's effort to digitize Nordisk familjebok. After a month of running OCR, 36,000 facsimile pages (more than 200 megabytes of text) of this classic Swedish encyclopedia are now better exposed to Google and other search engines, leading to more visitors and media attention. Each volume takes a couple of hours to OCR. When scanning and OCR are completed, this digital facsimile edition alone will encompass 44,000 pages. Project Runeberg's other digital facsimile editions comprise 60,000 pages all together.

Also OCRed in the last month are the five volumes (1865-1869) of the journal Svensk Literatur-Tidskrift.

A Swedish governmental report on legal deposit of electronic (online) documents, E-plikt - att säkra det elektroniska kulturarvet (SOU 1998:111) suggests to permanent the ongoing experiments to harvest, archive, and preserve all Swedish web pages for future research, as a complement to legal deposit of documents in fixed form (such as on paper and optical disks). Counting from the harvest in February 1998, there were 9.6 million files available on the Swedish parts of the Internet, half of which were in text/html format. At the same time, Project Runeberg had 15,000 HTML files, constituting 0.3 % of our nation's web contents.

18 Mar 1993 - First Media Attention
An article in Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat is the first ever media coverage of Project Runeberg.
6 Mar 1993 - First Announcement, Mailing List Created
In Usenet newsgroup soc.culture.nordic, the first public message outside Lysator tells the world about Project Runeberg. The amount of response sparks the creation of the Project Runeberg electronic mailing list.
Feb 1993 - Start of Web Service at Lysator
Per Hedbor of Lysator starts Sweden's first World Wide Web server, and soon starts to write his own webserver software. www.lysator.liu.se is born. Project Runeberg does not immediately transition to the web from Gopher.
17 Dec 1992 - First non-local access
Project Runeberg's Gopher menu is accessed from the host basun.umdc.umu.se. This is the first access from outside Linköping.
13 Dec 1992 - Start of Project Runeberg
Lars Aronsson collects some existing datafiles with poems by Viktor Rydberg and Erik Stagnelius under a menu called "Project Runeberg" in Lysator's Gopher server. The idea to start a project like this has been around for almost a year. The inspiration comes from Project Gutenberg, USA. The first files to be retrieved from the new "Projekt Runeberg" menu of Lysator's Gopher server at 8:10 PM on December 13, 1992, are the first verses of Fänrik Ståls sägner. This time counts as the start of the project. The next two editions to be accessed are Nordic Words (at 8:11 PM) and Bibeln (at 8:38 PM).

The 1992 Nordic University Computer Clubs' Conference (NUCCC) is hosted by Lysator in Linköping. At the final session it is decided that all clubs should start Internet information services to display their activites towards each other. Lars Aronsson maintains Lysator's Gopher server and tries to figure out how to fill the menus with interesting information.
Jul 1991 - Swedish Bible Typing Starts
In LysKOM, Linus Tolke makes the announcement that he has started to digitize (keyboard entry) the text of the Swedish Bible of 1917. Per Cederqvist later heads this activity in 1993 and 1994 as a part of Project Runeberg.
