Introduction to FAQs

FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions. The acronym was probably coined in USENET News some years ago, when the increasing amount of new readers asking the same old questions over and over again prompted some action. The resolution was to create a single article containing what was felt to be the most commonly asked questions and the collective answers to them.

Over the years, the readers of almost every newsgroup have created an FAQ for their special topics, which is usually posted regularly (say, once a month) in that particular newsgroup.

Collected FAQs and other tidbits are available from rtfm.mit.edu (note that the archive is quite voluminous).

With the advent of the World Wide Web, an interesting approach to providing structured hypertext information has become available. Furthermore, it seems that some FAQs could benefit alot from the new features offered by WWW, like hierarchical structure, cross references, hyperlinks and searching. We hope to bring you examples of hypertext put to good use.

In the future we would like to provide a searchable index of terms for the FAQs as well, but it is not quite ready.

If you would like to author hypertext FAQs and place them at this site (or a link), then contact the creator of the FAQ page.
