It is difficult to use this weapon properly. It feels good when you wield this weapon--you would most likely have no trouble getting a good hit with this weapon. You should have no trouble handling this weapon--or making a cruel hit with it for that matter. Even an apprentice warrior could kill easily with this weapon. With this weapon almost every strike could be a killing blow. Dr: This weapon doesn't seem very effective. This weapon might do some damage with a lucky hit. This weapon seems quite effective. This weapon could most likely kill with a single swipe. This weapon is extremely powerful and more lethal than many of the famous weapons. With this weapon even a single warrior will be able to match a large force. Ac: This armour wouldn't even protect you from a very weak blow. This armour could perhaps reduce damage a little. This seems to be an armour of average quality. This armour would protect you very well. This is an extremely well-made armour which would protect you very well. Virtually nothing could harm you if you wore this armour. Can also say if an item is enchanted. And might state that an item is "an extremely powerful artifact". The result is pretty random, so not very accurate, but by sminspecting an item several times and taking the average, you can get a good accuracy. For simplicity, I translate the results into a 100-graded scale, where the results are divided in 20-steps. So Worst result is considered to have value 0. Second worst has value 20, etc. Up to best result with value 100. Then I do 500 sminspects and calculate the average. Sminspect depends on the skill Appraise object. So to not get variations, I always keep that skill at 60 (superior craftsman). It might also depend on guild rank - this I haven't been able to test yet. Enchanted probably means that the item gives some kind of extra effect. You will either always get it, or never. No randomness there. Artifact-string comes up randomly. Ie, for really big items, there's a chance sminspect will say it's an artifact. And the better the item, the bigger the chance. But I don't know what it means. NOTE: Seems the accuracy depends on guild rank as well. Which means that higher appraise-object skill or higher rank, will affect the results, by moving the result towards those 20-thingies, the "better" you become at appraising. So 10 (exactly between 0 and 10) will stay as it is, but anything below will move towards 0, and anything above will move towards 20. If a fine condition:: Small whetstone (bought from Borin): -> Prime (50 - Competent) Small grey rock (find whetstone): -> Prime (45 - Efficient) If a little touched by battle: Small whetstone (bought from Borin): The longsword is too dull. You cannot sharpen it yourself. Only a smith may be able to do something about it. (55 - Skilled) Small grey rock (find whetstone): -> Fine condition (45 - Efficient) Fine condition (55 - Skilled) Fine condition (60 - Experienced) If scarred by battle: Small grey rock (find whetstone): The longsword is too dull to sharpen with this stone. (55 - Skilled) There seems to be an extra variable on items - maxcondition, which is set to max (prime condition) initially. And each time you sharpen a weapon, this variable is lowered slightly, until the weapon can't be repaired, even though it's in poor condition. Repairing using smiths might not affect this variable, but the variable will still limit how much an item can be repaired, even by an npc smith. Forging: ======== Forging is done in a forge. You need raw materials (bought from eg smithy in Bree), forging tools (available in the forge) and the actual forge. Forging takes about 2 minutes. While forging you can do just about anything that doesn't require moving. You start by doing "forge " and then it's automatic until done. Every X items forged will make you slightly better at forging that particular item, until you've reached max. How the forging skill applies to this I have yet to find out. Each item forged also gives some xp (general xp, I expect), but very little. Sometimes you might fail to forge. Then your result is a broken item of the type you tried to forge. This is still counted to the number needed towards reaching max for forging that particular item, _unless_ you have _never_ before succeeded in forging this item. Book: ===== The Blacksmiths is a craft-style guild for those who love forging weapons and armours. Their main guildhouse is located in Bree, west of Mithlond in Middle- earth. Blacksmiths can forge many types of weapons, including polearms, axes, knives, swords, and clubs. They can also forge most types of armours except for shields. Because forging is difficult work, you can expect to spend a lot of time forging the same item over and over before becoming proficient at it. As a Blacksmith you will also get several useful abilities such as finding whetstones for sharping weapons and inspecting weapons and armours to learn more about them. Because of their popularity, there are forges spread at several occupation guildhouses. Blacksmiths may often use these forges instead of travelling to Bree, and are very convenient for them. They forge using iron bars, leather, and wooden poles, which are sold at the forges. The dwarves--according to their own mythologies--were created by Aule, the god of smithcraft and stoneworking. It is true, indeed, that the dwarves were the first in Middle-Earth to forge blades and armours and in some concerns the dwarves of old has not been rivaled by any other race--not even elves--in their craft. The elves who came from the Undying Lands long ago--the Noldor they are named--brought with them great knowledge in the craft of forging. Many of the greatest perished during the long wars with the dark powers. The elves used their powers mostly to imbue their items with strange powers (magic items as other would call them). However, the dwarves spent generations finding and developing the best alloys and shapes for their items. Page 2 Page 3: A Brief History of the Blacksmiths Guild The Blacksmiths guild was founded by the dwarf Tranin who came passed through Bree more than two hundred years ago. He found many people were interested in his profession. Tranin made a small blacksmith shop here. Soon, hopeful apprentices, both human and dwarven, came here to learn the skills of smithing. That was the founding of the Blacksmiths Guild. Page 3 Page 4: Skills The following skills related to metal working can be learned here by a dedicated Blacksmith. * Forging to Superior Craftsman * Mending non-magical weapons to Superior Craftsman * Mending non-magical armours to Superior Craftsman The following skills relating to a Blacksmith's ability to determine the worth of his creations are also taught. * Appraising objects to Superior Professional * Appraising values to Superior Craftsman * Trading to Superior Craftsman Page 4 Page 5: Abilities As many Blacksmiths believe, he who is best equipped stands the best chance of survival during times of danger. To this end, a Blacksmith will learn the ability to distinguish the relative quality of items. No longer will he wonder if it is best to use a rusty longsword compared to a new shortsword. Eventually a Blacksmith, with a keen eye and years of experience, will have no trouble selecting the best quality weapon and armour from a large assortment of choices. A razor-sharp edge may be a Blackmith's best friend during any encounter he stumbles into. While the common man takes his weapon to his local blacksmith to pay for it to be sharpened, a Blacksmith can do this job himself in the Forge for free. Also, while travelling, a Blackmith will learn to find certain rocks that allow him to sharpen his weapon right there. The need to travel to the nearest town for this service is alleviated for a Blacksmith. Page 5 Page 6: Tax The Blacksmiths Guild tax is slight. Guild members will be notified prior to any changes of the tax rate. Page 6 Page 7: Joining the Blacksmiths Guild Prospective members of the Blacksmiths Craft Guild must complete an apprentice project to prove their worth before joining. Bores, the resident Master Blacksmith, will be the sole judge of a prospective member's merit. Further questions regarding joining should be directed towards him. Note: The Blacksmiths are now a Craft guild and not a Layman guild. Page 7 Page 8: Leaving the Blacksmiths Guild It is widely acknowledged the life of a Blacksmith is a hard road to travel. For those who no longer have the desire to be a part of this guild, for whatever reason, the option to leave it is available at no penalty. Type here and all ties with this guild will be severed. Page 8 Extra info - untested: ====================== A higher title will allow you to train more forging skill, which in time allows you to forge better. However, it is the total amount items forged that determines how good you can forge it. Also, having forged thousands of battle axes won't mean you will forge good iron waraxes in the first try.
