Intelligent Praying

Namche Bazaar, 3500 m, January 6, 2001

The Nepalese have an ingenious way of making prayers more effective. Or at least of praying a lot. Every time one of the prayer rolls (below) is turned, the prayers are sent up to the gods. In many places they have automatized even more by making water-powered praying rolls (right). Thanks to this automagic praying machine, they can pray 24 hours a day. Perhaps you think that it is not possible to pray more than that? It is. They build them in sequences of 5-10 units along the river. To be a Nepalese god must be some rather tedious work!
