Galapagos is a fairly detail artificial life project in which a number of creatures a simulated over time. The simulation follows a number of laws which are inspired by, altough not replicating, the standard laws of nature. By implementing mutations and crossovers and the implicit natural selection in the simulation the overall result is an evolution of the creatures in which new breeds of creatures fullfilling different ecological niches araise.

What differs this alife project from many others are the complexity of the rules in the simulation. In this simulation the creatures lives on a height landscape containing water, sand, soil, rocks, grass, trees etc. All creatures are landborn four legged creatures and all have a number of genes determining their physical properties such as how well they can digest different forms of food, the length and size of different body parts etc. In the genome for the creatures are also included a simple but flexible fuzzy behaviour based AI brain that allows the creatures to evolve different behaviours. During the lifelength of a simulation the creatures typically start out as dumb grasseater with a high mortality but after a while the creatures split up into different evolutionary paths and creatures such as carrion eaters and carnivores emerge.

Galapagos constist of two programs. The simulatior named "galapagos" and the visalisation tool "safari" which allows a third person view of the simulatior and the inhibitants of it.

See using galapagos and using safari for information about these two programs.
