It's configuration is as follows:

The DECstation 5000/200 was the first R3000 based machine in the DECstation line of computers. It was preceeded by the R2000 based DECstation 2100/3100 machines. The 5000/200 is a vast improvement in expandability (it goes to a maximum of 480 MB as opposed to the maximum of 24 MB in the 2100/3100) and it has Turbo Channel slots for expansion, while the 2100/3100 could only accept memory SIMMs and simple frame buffers (in color or monochrome versions, but w/o hardware acceleration).

The 200 series of machines was continued with the 240 (40 MHz R3000) and the 260 (60 MHz R4400). The original 5000/200 differed other DECstation 5000 machines (both in the 200 series and in the 100 and Personal DECstation series) in the following ways:

It's name did not end with the clock frequency of the CPU. If it was to have followed later naming conventions it should have been called 5000/225.
It's R3000 CPU is mounted directly on the mother board. All the other machines have the CPU on a daughter card, making it easy to upgrade the machine to a faster model in the same series.
It's NI and SCSI interfaces are not considered part of the motherboard although they physically resides there. Instead they are electrically attached so that they appears as TurboChannel options. The console ROM even identifies e.g. the SCSI controller as a PMAZ, which is the same as the optional TurboChannel SCSI controller that can be used with any of the 5000 series machines.
It only has a BNC ethernet connector (neither AUI nor TP).

The 200 series machines are a bit odd in that they don't contain any space for an internal harddrive. However they are the most powerfull DECstations built. The others can neither accept as much memory nor communicate as fast with its Turbo Channel expansions. For the Personal DECstation the maximum ammount of memorory is 40 MB, and for the DECstation 5000/100 it is 128 MB (compared to the 480 MB in the 200 series). The clock frequency of the Turbo Channel slots is 25 MHz in the 200 series while it is only 12.5 MHz in the other two designs.
