Wow. The desert island special seems to have caught on quite nicely. There
have been several inspired picks out there (Corduroy, Cardigans, Sly and the
Family Stone--awesome). I certainly respect all those who picked some
obvious greats.

I'll stick my cahunas out there for a moment. Desert island faves:

Complete Stone Roses
Ride--Tarantula (with Black Nite Crash single, please, if I may cheat on one)
James Taylor Quartet--Supernatural Feeling
Black Grape--It's Great When... (got to keep dancing so the tsetse flies
won't get you)
Pale Fountains--Pacific Street (10 points for anyone who remembers these
guys)
Paul Weller--1st solo
Charlatans--self titled
Cardigans--Life
Mother Earth--the People Tree
Beatles--Help! (for good luck!)

Unfortunately, if someone rescued you, then you would be sick of your 10
albums forever and wouldn't listen to them again. Ooh, what a drag.

Does anyone know when the new Charlatans single is due out? Or did I miss
that e-mail?

Rep - Surely that must have been Love Spreads - their rather splendid first
single off of Second Coming which borrows certain guitar licks from Mr
Hendrix. Although I'm sure you're not dumb enough to mistake the two.

I managed to get tickets for the recording of The White Room ( a UK live
music show) last week and managed to have a chat with Mark Radcliffe (the
presenter and a Radio 1 DJ). After a while we got on to the subject of the
Charlatans, apparently the band were schedueled to make a live appearance
on the show to coincide with the new single in a few weeks time,
however after Rob's death it was immediatley cancelled, but the offer was
left open for the band to play by the shows producers if they changed
their mind, and it now looks likely they'll be on the show soon. Look out
for it!
Mark also said that James Taylor from JTQ was drafted in to replace Rob
for a few gigs at the time of Rob's prison spell (I don't honestly remember
this happening but I wasn't going to argue with him) and that he would be
the obvious short term replacement. With Duffy being drafted in this
doesn't seem to be the case.

Has anybody been to The Big Kahuna Burger Bar on a Friday at Smithfields,
Tim is a regular there and sometimes DJ's as are the Chemical Brothers,
Coldcut, some of Primal Scream, St Ettiene (Sarah Cracknell in the
flesh: even better than in the video's lads!), James Dean Bradfield.
Deffinitely the coolest place to be on a Friday if you're in London - you
all must go. The last time I was there was in June, Tim was there and he got
mobbed by a load of Japanese tourists! They didn't say anything but just
followed him around all night - bizarre!

For those of you who haven't heard the new single - SUCKERS!!!!!!!
It's a real grower, sounds a lot like Sympathy For The Devil, there's even
a bit were Tim sings 'pleased to meet you', it's produced by one of the
Chemical Brothers and is dead groovy. You won't be dissapointed. In this
age of any old indie band getting a Top 10 hit in the UK charts, I'm
going to put a bet on at the local bookies that it's going to be a number 1.

Lot's of Love
Kev.
XXXX

p.s. Elastica must be destroyed: become friends through Steve Llamacq via
boyfriend, get a record deal on Llamacq's Deceptive label therefore assuring
much over-inthusiastic press coverage (Steve still has his music press links)
and radio airplay (on Steve's very own radio 1 show). Despite the fact that
the band are talentless, sing about nothing (Justine's dad designed
Canary Wharf so it's unlikely you'll hear her singing about hardship), and
have a greater realiance on other peoples material to 'create' their own songs
than the Barron Knights or Wierd Al Yankovic, their debut album sells by the
bucket load largely due to the fact too many 'music fans' are infact
sheep unable to see past music press hype, unable to decide for
themselves if they actually like a band and instead buy records that they
are are 'supposed' to like. I have yet to meet one person who actually
likes Elastica.

Beats slagging off Oasis.

I kept on promising myself that I wouldn't join in, but...

10) Exile on Main Street by the Rolling Stones

Easily the Stones' most complete album, and my favourite. I couldn't
imagine not taking this one with me.

9) Abbey Road by the Beatles

I know...a pretty generic and common choice. I don't care...its a
fantastic album.

8) Some Friendly by the Charlatans

Well, I don't need to explain this one!

7) New Wave by the Autuers

The most underrated album of all-time.

6) Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys

Its unbelievable that people think of "Surfin' USA" when they ponder
the Beach Boys, instead of this incredible album (which is 100 times
better than Sgt. Pepper, BTW).

5) The Charlatans by the Charlatans

Goes without saying.

4) Definitely Maybe by Oasis

Good solid, swaggering rock and roll.

3) Parklife by Blur

The best album of the 1990's.

2) Stone Roses by the Stone Roses

The best album of the 1980's.

1) Revolver by the Beatles

The best album...of all-time.

You know what? I'm still not happy with this list...I wish I could include
some Led Zepplin, David Bowie, Black Sabbath, Happy Mondays, the
La's and maybe another Blur album in there!

Actually, I've heard that exact thing from a lot of other people and a lot
of industry type of places. I do believe that I even read that Paul
Macartny said that it was one of the most influencial records of all time as
well. And I have to support jim in his claim that it is nothing like the
surfin' USA type of beach boys stuff. I didn't think that was possible but
upon constant harrassment from a friend I gave it a chance to be pleasantly
surprised. Here today becoming one of my favourite songs of the 1960s -
ever. Two other bands that rival the beatles IMHO are the Left Banke and
the Walker brothers, with the hollies and byrds coming in close behind.

And I know, I know not charlatans related. I just wanted to support jim's
claim that Pet Sounds is a bloody brilliant album.

It really is a remarkable, and revoloutionary, album that I strongly

Sadly, there are only a few charlatan bootlegs floating around.

One of the best is "Hot Licks"; excellent sound quality, and a good mix

Hit and miss. "Happen to Die" is one of the best songs by any band

Yeah man, my fave bootleg is Hotlicks, its pretty easy to find too.
The b-sides are really cool. Check out the 'Then' single. The b-side
is 'Taurus Moaner' its one of my favourite songs by the charlatans.
Another reccomendation is the b-side to Tremelo song.

So, the Charlatans are going on tour with Paul Weller later in August
are they! Well well well... anyone have the tour schedule handy???

Regarding the Knebworth gig - I know BBC (radio) are recording the Oasis
concert, because they broadcast it here in Sweden the day after - and
MTV Europe is broadcasting bits and pieces (or is it the whole thing?)
from the Oasis concert live tomorrow. But what about our heroes
The Charlatans!? Anyone know if _anyone_ is broadcasting _anything_

But you should go listen to "Surf's Up" - it's brilliant! The Beach Boys,
okay so they put out dodgy surf shit early on but they got real experimental
and were tres ahead of their time. As well as Pet Sounds, Smile (or Smiley
Smile) is excellent. And they were a big influence on the Beatles around
the time of Sgt. Pepper.

Ooh! And yes indeedie the Hollies, Byrds and Walker Brothers are excellent
too. And the old Brit group Nirvana.

THE CHARLATANS have drafted in Primal Scream man Martin Duffy in place of
the late Rob Collins to play keyboards on their forthcoming dates with Oasis
(August 11 at Knebworth) and with Paul Weller (August18 at Chelmsford).
Duffy offered his services after hearing that The Charlatans wanted to go
ahead with the gigs. A statement from the band read: "Martin is one of the
few contemporary keyboard players who The Charlatans feel possesses the
talent, skill and passion that made Rob's playing so distinctive."

Duffy is a temporary replacement; the band will look for a full-time member
after they have completed their gig obligations. They will release a new
single called 'One To Another' on August 26, taken from the sessions for
their fifth album which was being recorded at Rockfield studios in Wales
when Collins died in a car accident. According to the band, the album is 75
per cent finished; they will restart work on it in the autumn.

>From this weeks edition of NME.

ROB COLLINS
1963 - 1996

The death of Charlatans keyboardist Rob Collins has added a further
tragic dimension to the band's chequered history. Born in Sedgeley on
February 23, 1963, he was naturally gifted on the piano at school, and
played in various bands before teaming up with fellow '60s
enthusiasts Martin Blunt and Jon Brookes in 1988. They formed a
prototype Charlatans built around the talents of singer and guitarist
Baz Kettley. Aware that the band weren't realising their full potential,
Kettley departed in early 1989 to be replaced by ex-Electric Crayons
singer Tim Burgess. Things began to click.

Heavily influenced by the fluid, Funkadelic-inspired grooves flowing out of
Manchester, the band adopted a loose, rhythm-heavy sound which allowed Collins
space to make his Hammond organ sound (an instrument largely neglected since
the '60s) the group's hallmark. Having attracted the attention of local record
shop owner Steve Harrison, the band released their organ-heavy debut single
'Indian Rope' (a nod to Brian Augur's classic Hammond workout 'Indian
Rope Man') on his Dead Dead Good label in 1989.

A deal with Beggars Banquet was duly signed and second single
'The Only One I Know' went straight into the Top Ten, characterised as it
was by Collins' idiosyncratic stop-start organ surges, subsequently
becoming NME Single Of The Year for 1990. Debut album 'Some Friendly'
entered the LP charts at Number One. However, the constant disruption of
touring, combined with Martin Blunt's hospitalisation for manic depression
and the departure of guitarist Jon Baker, meant the Flood-produced second
album, 'Between 10th And 11th', was a patchy affair. By 1993, though, more
serious problems loomed.

Collins was sentenced to eight months in jail for his part in an attempted
armed robbery. The band recorded the 'Up To Our Hips' album while awaiting
his release. Only then did Collins get to hear what the band had constructed
around the swamp of keyboards he'd already recorded. Inevitably the record
was an impressive, if deeply thoughtful, affair despite spawning the
uncharacteristically upbeat 'Can't Get Out Of Bed' single. Burgess wrote a
song about himself and Collins entitled 'I Never Want An Easy Life If Me And
He Were Ever To Get There'.

With Collins' sentence over, the group now seemed more settled. With Mark
Collins (no relation) providing a more than competent foil for Collins'
virtuosity, the band finally proved it on record with the release of their
marvellous eponymous fourth album in August 1995, paving the way for a
critical renaissance and a seemingly long and successful career. Poised to
release a new single, 'One To Another', prior to their fifth studio album
as well as being booked as special guests at both the Oasis and Paul Weller
shows over the summer, The Charlatans' place as one of the country's most
enduring and important groups seemed assured. That these glories would
have allowed Collins further opportunity to both excel as an organist and
to live life to the fullest possible degree - his other great talent - makes
his death an even greater tragedy. He is survived by his wife, Joanne, and
daughter, Emily.

I've always been surprised that they didn't catch on...their first,
self-titled album is sort of a poppier "Some Friendly".

A really good band that everyone on the list should check out.

Seems every few months we go though the, "cool bands everyone shoulda
heard of thing." Still wondering what became of a bunch of bands from
that time frame. Any one know what happened to the High or the Dylans
for example?

Don't think anything will ever compare again to 1989 when I found The
Charlatans, The High, the Dylans The Stone Roses, And Inspiral Carpets
all in the space of about a month. Sudenly there was music.

Did anyone see Later with Jools Holland last Saturday? I was half expecting
it to be a new programme featuring the Charlies' new single, but seeing as
I hadn't watched any of the others in the programme, it came as a great
shock to realise that it was, in fact, a repeat.

Now, how did I know it was a repeat you ask? Well for starters they played
two old songs (Just Lookin', JWYTTO), but more importantly our saly
departed old keyboard-tinklin' mucker, Rob Collins, was happily pearched
behind his organ doing the biz.

For me at least this was a sad recollection of a fine musician and goes to
show what a tight unit the band were when playing live (although I still
reckon Tim's voce sounds destinctly weak live).

By the way, did anyone see The Charlatans at Knebworth yesterday? If so,
how did they sound, did they play much new stuff, and what was the boy's
general mood after the recent tragedy?

Just curious
