What was the name of the song the Charlatans performed live on 120
Minutes a couple of months ago when Tim and Jon hosted the show?

I thought it was toothache. But then again on the best of 120 or whatever the
fuck it was the Charlies did a different song than what I saw. So maybe I came
into the show late and missed the first set? How many songs did they play? I
only saw one, but then again....

Hello all funky Americans and other people from not England who don't
understand us, especially you Amanda. There soon follows a short lesson
in English slang.

We don't get 120 Minutes over here. Sounds like a cool music show or
am I getting the wrong end of the stick?. Do you get the White Room or
Later over there?

Just how big are the Charlatan's in America? Do they chart much?
What size gigs are they playing?

A tosser is a wanker or some one who masturbates. Do you lot still
call it jocking off? There was a charachter in Mork and Mindy called
Mr Wanker, which many an English schoolboy used to find hillarious.
But then we grew up and got sensible.

To shite (pronounced shyte) is to do a shit. It also means the noun
shit and you can call someone a shite quite legitimately.

blook - i don't know what a blook is. A bloke is a geezer - a young man.
A pedant is a big word we don't use often and it is some one who is
pedantic.

So there you have it.-' Blimey guvnor, I met this bloke in the pub the
other day and he was a right tosser and no mistake' is perfect
English. Even the Queen talks like that

The Charlatans aren't that big Stateside. I can't really recall the
last time I saw one of their albums go up on Billboard, but I have seen
their albums end up on the College Charts shortly after release.

Their gigs aren't that big either, usually playing smaller clubs, though
in Chicago they always sell out. The Charlatans have a VERY devoted
following over here!

Keep On Keepin' On,
Kari

PS: Thanks for the English Slang refresher!

hehehehehehehe *:-D!! That was very informative :) I like your slangs
better than ours here in the US. I got a small lesson in English slang a
long time ago when Blur was doing an interview over here in the states. But
to clarify for ya, it's "jerking off", not "jocking off" ;)

But I got a question for ya. What is a "blimey"? I still have no clue.

What's kind of funny is that the Charlatans were playing in much bigger
venues on their first couple of tours, than they are now. I saw them at
the Warfield here in San Fransisco in '91. They packed the place. If
anyones ever been to the warfield they'll understand. It's bigger than
the Fillmore where the Roses played last year. When the Charlies came
through on their last tour, they played at Slims, a tiny little club
for little bands. It was cool to see them up and close, but I was really
surprised.

In San Diego the Charlatans aren't popular at all...I don't even think they
ever came down to play here...In LA they played a show last fall in front of
about 1,500+ people...the crowd loved them (of course) They don't get any
radio play (thank god!!!)

People are just not exposed to them, and that's why they don't have a
following. Everybody I've introduced to the groovy sound of the Charlatans
falls in love with them...One of my friends came with me to their show in LA
last fall and even though he had barely heard any of their material, was
completely blown away!!! Those of you who have seen them live, know what I'm
talking about...The Charlatans live = Heaven on Earth!

Peace!

just putting in some Canadian input here:
To Andrew,
(when you asked about America, were you talking about Canada too?
or are we completely foreign over there?

Anyways, when charlatans came here,
the venue was for only 700 if full, which i doubt would fill up to capacity,
and this was in toronto, the biggest city in Canada.
They have never charted here on the big time charts

Their biggest break was "The only one i know"
and that probably got on college charts,
but it got radio play on one of the bigger stations too.
The weirdo video is seen quite often on MuchMusic, our nation wide music channel
and i think only can't get out of bed and just lookin' got radio play.
I have only seen the latter video a few times.
They're still considered pretty small here
and i know when they came for an interview at an open radio store,
there were only a few dozen on hand to see them.
They don't cause no mob frenzy here.

On the subject of slang, the only ones aside from the usual swear words
that i use religiously are
wally--- no offense to any of you named this...
"You're such a wally!" (hilarious shrieking laughter following)
used when you want to describe somebody, it can be a substitute
for pretty much anything like stupid, loser...

 dumbass--- "Shut up you dumbass"
just a personal favourite that i like to use b/c it can
work when you're really pissed off or just when you're teasing.

mother--- just stick it in front of anything for emphasis
"i've got a mother load of homework"

Anyways, can somebody tell me about the big ass festivals there?
Which is the ultimate and which ones have the charlatans played in?
I've read lots of stuff from magazines but is it that good?

they did play in sd, i got to see them at sdsu. about 1000 people maybe.
great show but some idiots were throwing stuff and moshing. tim got hit in
the face with a wet t-shirt and stormed off. cant say i blame him but it
was a real drag. i was supposed to meet them after the show but they were
really upset and didnt let anyone backstage. tehy played for about 1 1/2
hrs. i guess they had a few songs still to do. that was on the some
friendly tour. they also were supposed to be here for a festival show last
summer. they were on the tickets and the line-up cards but sadly were not
here. nobody announced why.

This is is a cool mailing list.

to Erin -
Slang part two
Blimey is 'Cor Blimey' shortened, which means God Blind Me, which is
what you said in the middle ages or something because they hadn't
come up with fuck or shit or any of the lovely words we have today.

Anne - The only real ' big ass' festival here for years was
Glastonbury. It's only rivals were Donnington(which you don't want to
hear about) and maybe Reading.
Nowadays Reading is almost as good as Glasto', and we have a few new
ones like The Phoenix which is somewhere near Stratford, and T in the
Park in Scotland(Glasgow I think)
I got in to Glastonbury over the fence last summer, and it was the
best naughty thing I've ever done in my life. Of course the Charlatans were
there and they played a stormer on the NME stage. Other highlights
were Elastica, The Verve, The Bootleg Beatles and Dodgy(who have got
to be one of the best bands ever. Try and get hold of 'Homegrown'
or the new album, Free Peace Sweet ) Oasis were the head liners on the
Sunday, but they sucked to be honest. The weather was fantastic, and
I can't recomend it enough.
Feile in Cork in Ireland last July was cool too. That was in a
stadium, and everyone camped in a feild down the road. The Stone Roses
were what we went for, and they didn't let us down. That was probably
the last good gig they did before they split. I got a superb photo of
John when he came out in to the crowd one afternoon. No Charlatans
though.
The last time I saw the charlatans was in Southampton Guildhall last
winter. Nothing much to say really except that they were as tight and
absolutely divine as ever.
This is my last Email to the list for a few months, as I start
college hollidays tomorrow and I'm off home to London till October
So keep on keeping on till then everyone.

That's just too bad. Especially for Charlies fans here in Canada, of whom
there are many. Usually when non-North American bands can't make it in the
states but can still have popularity in Canada, they don't show up since
we're not a big enough market.

Kari, please intice Chicagoans (did I say that right?) to spread the word
around the U.S. so's that we Canucks can still see the Charlies live!

Does anyone know if this had anything to do with the naming of the

Hi all (you three :)!

I am here too, but I don't read the mails as much as usual when I'm home
on vacation. I guess there's a lot of people that are away for the
summer, and that may explain the weirdiness.

As for the chords, I've got some chords, actually all the chords for Some
Friendly (which is a notebook officially released). I've also got the
chords for Can't Get Out Of Bed. I don't know when, but I will try to put
the chords on my homepage right after the vacation. As for my homepage
now (I'm talking about the Charlatans' BackRoomWindow), will proably be
down soon for the summer. The faculty I study at is cleaning all the
user's files to get space for new student users. The old version of the
page is up all the summer at
http://www.stud2.misjonshs.no/~eirikg/Charlatans.html

And, Travis, I did see the NME input you sendt, thanks. Boku mo genki

Hi everybody. This first question is to jim lowe, what else is on that cfny
disk? I'm from buffalo (and in school in illiois this summer) and am thinking
about heading up to toronto for a day, I want to know if I should go hunting
for it (althought it probably won't be that hard). for those of you who don't
know toronto is the hippest city in the world, and I've been to quite a few.
Lots of good music, and although cfny has slipped a little the past two
years (ie, played metallica) it is still the best radio station I have
ever laid my ears on. I suffered huge in undergrad with cleveland radio
and now, lets just say the midwest of the us is...well... fucking awful.
btw, I've learned much on this list, and it is good to see other large
charlatans fans out there. I'm really surprised they haven't caught on
more. I also kinda felt obligated to write something when I read so many
people writing "where is everyone?". I also have another general
question, has anyone ever seen the "i don't want to see the sights" cd
single? I saw it in germany and as I recall it had 3 versions of the
song. I had few marks with me (and I figured I be able to at least find
it in toronto) but I passed up on it for the weirdo single. It has much
the same package art that weirdo has, same style. But I've yet to see it
on anyone's discography. Was I dreaming? can anyone help me out? And if
they can, did I totally screw up by not picking it up?

okay here is a suggestion for all the charlatans fans. pick up a copy of
st. etienne's tiger bay album and there is tim burgess and sarah cracknell
doing a duet. the song is called "i was born on christmas day" and if you
are lucky enough there are still copies of the actual single floating around
(just in case you have no interest in the st. etienne album although it is
pretty damn good like all the other etienne stuff). it was recorded during
the time tim and sarah were dating, thus, that big photo spread in either mm
or nme with a mock up of a wedding for the two of them.

i highly recommend it to all.

yeah, eden music fest might have more of a draw if there were one day
tickets. i mean bloody hell what kind of a music festival only sells
tickets for the whole damn weekend at a ridiculously price. am i the only
one who thinks over $130 is a bit much? especially since i'd only want to
see the cure, and possibly shed seven. north america has a thing or two to
learn about putting on musical festivals that can even come close to the
european ones. can anyone imagine reading or pheonix not selling one day
tickets. let's just say the organizers of eden fest lost a lot of bussiness
by not selling one day passes.

although, all this could be pointless since my friend told me she'd heard
that this policy was changed shortly after tickets went on sale. but, by
then i was so annoyed i couldn't careless.

If anyone knows any other comps beside the Spirit deal, cough up the goods.

Also if traffic here slows to a crawl, I have more "Dirty Laundry" to send
(if anyone cares or not) having to do with the Posies show here at First Ave.
in Mpls. It rocked! The album is harder than Frosting on the Beater but has
plenty of cool typical Posies melodies, however its better if you re-
sequence the tracks.

Any news on the JTQ new release???? I don't know if these guys influenced

Ha, ha! I'm going to defy you my dear Travis, and I'll even do it without
death references.

So, I finally bought/listened to Between 10th and 11th today. What can I
possibly say? It is an absolutely amazing album!! I cannot believe what I
was missing out on. It just puts you in this crazy, fun, happy kind of
mood. Can't Even be Bothered is a truly excellent song. To me, it's
almost anthemic in a way. I mean "Can't even be bothered, energy breaks me
down." How true is that?

This album is definitely different from their most recent release. The
songs on the more recent one seem almost mellower (in general) and seem to
incorporate much more of an acoustic sound, whereas B10th&11th is much more
electronic in nature. But there is no sound in the world more pleasing
than a hammond organ. Wouldn't you all agree? It just kind of opens your
mind to an entirely different sound then you're used to. Very trippy.

Once again, the lovely Tim Burgess has dazzled me with his oh-so-sweet
vocals. Never a harsh note. Just a truly mesmerizing voice.

I would have to say that B10th&11th is possibly my favourite of the 4
albums. Absolutely brilliant piece of work which will only sound better
with time. My love for the Charlatans has definitely been moved to a
deeper level and I couldn't be happier :)

Ummm.... HMV had a sampler called "Free at Last2" that was released in 92,
it has 'Tremolo Song' on it. If you are looking for them on a compilation,
try the Volume CD series, they produce stellar CD's with books and stuff,
and focus on British/indie bands.

Hi!

I just want to make an input on some of the subjects.

The Charlatans VS The Chemical brothers contains 4 tracks. Three of them
are different versions of Toothache which have also appeared on the vinyl
version of their latest album as well as on the b side of the Just When
You're Thinking Things Over CD single. The fourth track is the brilliant
Nine Acre Dust which I understood was on the recent Select compilation
tape. The Chemical Brothers also mixed Patrol and Feel Flows from Up Tp
Our Hips. Then they were called The Dust Brothers. You can find the mixes
on the Jesus Hairdo singles. The 12 inch includes different mixes than on
the CD version. There is likely to be more collaborations.

The Don't Want To See The Sights Cd single was an american promo only
release (at least I think it was promo and not an ordinary release). It
contains some different versions of the same track, but isn't too
different. There is an edit, and then there's the alternate take version
of the track. If you've heard the diference between Tremelo Song on the
album and on the single, that's how different the versions of Don't Want
To See The Sights are. If you can't find it on my discography
(http://www.ifi.uio.no/~eirikg/Charlatans.html), you will surely find it
on Sally's discography (you can browse from my page, just go to the links
& misc page). She's got a picture of the cover as well.

OK keep on lovin' them!

Eirik, thanks for dropping the knowledge, I don't feel so bad about not
picking it up now, I have the tremelo-double cd and yeah, not much
different, although owning the live chewing gum weekend is so worht
owning it! The chalatans vs. cd is
definitely worth the pick-up. As are the jesus hairdo singles, if you can
still find them (one has live stuff on it, the other remixes), for those
that aren't aware.

As far as the beastie boys influence, I being a huge fan of both bands,
can't wait for the charlatans next album. Tim Burgess was quoted as
saying that he had been listening to a lot of b-boys (I probably read
that on one of Eiriks page connections). If the influence makes it into
the album, it will either be ehn or Jesus, i'm counting on
Jesus. I hope the influence does come through, especially on the beats.
And, maybe people already know this but, the Dust Brothers who produced
the beastie boys' Paul's Boutique are not the same as the Chemical Bros.
They are the reason the Chemical Brothers had to changge their name. If
anyone gives a shit.

ok, and one other thing, I want to hear people's first time listening to
the charlatans, from people I know who are fans it was a memorable
experience. I'd like to put in mine, but its a little personal so I want
to see if others open up.

uh yeah, one other album question (can't you tell this shits been heavy
on my mind?) does anyone have the live bootleg from, I believe, the 10th
and 11th tour? I think it was on KTS (kiss the stone) another one I saw
in Germany that I had no money for (at like this street market in Berlin,
it was cool). I have the one from the tour stop in Italy, the one with
the shitty sound quality. Hot LIcks. nice name. I was actually afraid of
seeing them in concert
after that because I would've thought it was a shitty show (but the times
I've seen them they've been outstanding! thinking just a little short on the
playlist myself, I think someone said they decided they'd have to sing me
in time by themselves, I feel that way about happen to die, chewing gum
weekend and i don't want to see..) Well, any info would be appreciated.

OK- chemical bros & the charlatans....off the top of my head there's
been about half a dozen collaborations: les chems remixed toothache
and called it chemical risk. that's on the vinyl uk version of "The
Charlatans" and a b-side of,erm....just when you're thinkin'.... I
think. What else...there's a remix of Patrol on another single
("crashin' in" ?) and a remix of nine acre court around called Nine
Acre Dust - that turned up on a recent thing called The Chemical Bros
Live at the Heavenly Social and that tape that came free with Select
magazine. Plus Tim turmed up on Life is Sweet and both bands
collaborated on a version of Sly Stone's Time for Livin' on the Bosnia
War Child Help album thing. Which is excellent. And Tim's voice sounds
dead rough on it near the end.
I've seen a 12inch thing around called The Charlatans vs The Chemical
Bros but don't know what's on it. I s'pose it's everything they've
done together so far.
Oh, if only the chemical bros would produce a whole damn album....
