Last night's gig was phenomenal, one of THE best gigs I've ever been
to (and there were no voice problems or fire alarms ;-) ). The atmos
was fantastic and the place was sold out and packed to capacity.
Everyone seemed to be in good spirits and despite there being the
usual gig idiots there were no problems or chance of it.

Northern Uproar started - Erm, yeah, great, erm fairly average really,
started off very poorly but about 2 or 3 songs stood out including
their current single. They looked a bit stiff on stage though and said
thing like "Tops", "Cheers", "Fanks" in BRROOOAAADDD Mancunian accents
after every song. Bass playing lead vocalist though, not a lot around!

At 9.30pm the light went down and a light shone on the back "the
Charlatans" and the Chemical Brothers music started, then finished
before they came on, Tim doing his little salute to the crowd. The
general track list has been shown before but there were a couple of
surprises, not least in Nine Acre Court to start proceedings but also
Thank You and Tell Everyone on the encore :

        Nine Acre Court
        Soul Saver
        Easy Life
        Only One I Know
        Thank You
        Just Lookin
        Jesus Hairdo
        Toothache
        Feelin Holy
        Can't Get Out Of Bed
        Thinkin things Over
        Wierdo
        Then
        Crashin In
        --------------
Tell Everyone - Went to get a drink at this stage!!
        Sproston Green

An absolutely packed track list! The best tracks were Then, Nine Acre
Court, Feelin Holy, Crashin In and Sproston Green.

The only bad bits were when Tim kept murmuring into the mike and
no-one could hear him! He really looked to be enjoying himself though,
much more than, say, Oasis if I dare mention them.

     Superb,
     Mark K.

My personal favorite Charlatan's cd so far is Between 10&11.
I haven't listened to the new one enough times to be really fair though. Its
really great so far. Just Looking , Feeling Holy and Toothache are among my
favorites from it so far.

I really like Up to our Hips too. It was definitely my favorite.

When I first listened to the latest album there were some songs I liked,
but overall I didn't think it was as good as Up to Our Hips. I've been
listening to it quite a bit though, and it's grown on me a lot. I think
I do like it about as much as Up to our Hips. Both of them are pretty
incredible.

Just my opinion,

their direction at times with it...
still Up To Our Hips is top.

Somewhere, sometime, I read that Tim Burgess almost lost it during the
recording of Up To Our Hips (and i remember reading interviews from that
time in which he made numerous references to smoking a lot of weed and
drinking quite a bit of JD) and that Mrtin Blunt was the one who had to
pull it all through.

Up to Our Hips and Some Friendly are both really good too. I really like
everything they have put out so far. Most of their songs are so catchy that
all their albums are great. I still feel though that Between 10th and 11th is
the most consistent.

A lot of people really like Between 10th and 11th but the Charlies don't....
they have said that after all the mixing that was done on it by Flood it just
wasnt them anymore.
Notice that the sets they play now only include Weirdo from B10th and 11th....I
guess that's the one single they can tolerate from it.

Some Friendly is my favorite, but we are all going to like different ones,
now aren't we? I wish I had gotten to see them in that phase of their career
(I saw them with about 50 other people in a small club during "Up To Our
Hips" tour in Boston, U.S.). Anyways, someone said that they usually only
play "Weirdo" from B10&11th, which I agree with, but when I saw them they
played "Can't Even Be Bothered" and it was one of the best tunes they did
that night. So I was wondering what more obscure tracks people have ever
seen them play, now or recently, like b-sides for instance. Has anyone ever
heard them perform "Stir It Up", "Taurus Moaner", "Only A Boho", "Who Wants
To Know", "Everything Changed" or even "Back Room Window"? How about covers?
Besides "Time For Livin" I've never heard of the Charlies doing any covers,
although I'm sure that they must have done a few along the way. With all the
gigs they play, you'd think that they would get sick of playing the same
songs over and over and throw in a few rarities now and then.

Matt

BTW, I'd be happy to make a compilation tape of b-sides for anyone in
exchange for any live Charlatans music (I live in a smaller city where it's
VERY hard to find Chucktans boots, even the more popular ones). Just email

Did you understand ANYTHING Tim said that night?! We made out some of
the track introductions but that's about it. A really cool bit was
when someone threw a fag box (?) and Tim, despite singing and
dancing, caught it one handed and gave a little celebration. There
was also a part where he dropped his mike and someone nicked it, I
think Tim said "Give me it back or I'll kill you" (in a joking way!).

I didnt get a word that Tim said but I think it was partly because we
had seats in the balcony at the back which were a bit naff. He did
put the mike into the audience at one point as well and all one sorry
gig goer could manage was a pathetic "Aaaaghh". One potential moment
of fame completely ruined. Where or what the hell is "yacc" in your

One is a model (the girl I think) and the other is the guy who does their

All I ever seem to bloody get are receipts and bugger all about the
Charlatans. Im getting about 20 a day as well and Ive had enough.
Paradoxically though, writing stuff like this adds to the amount of
crap that everyone reads and has no relevance to the Charlies.
Therefore, just for posterity, my favourite Charlatans song is "I
Never Want An Easy Life....."

Hello, I'm one of the maintainers of this list!

It seems like some of you have some sorts of problems at this list. I may
misunderstood, but if any of you recieve 20 or more mails for no reason from
this list, please mail to me personally and tell me what you're recieveing.
I'm only recieving 5-6 mails a day from this mailinglist, so if some of you
get a lot more something's propably wrong. I hope it will work out. I also
hope you don't get too pissed with the situation, if it's the lists' fault. I
haven't been able to look at so much concerning the list due to all the exams
I'm having at the moment..

Anyway, I know there's a lot of you now who's from UK at this list, so I am
asking about something I've been asking about before. I was at the Daytripper
gig with the Charlatans and Ride in Brighton a couple of years ago, and that
was of course brilliant. I have finally managed (thanks to Hiroko) to get hold
on a cassett tape from that concert. This was between their 2nd and 3d album,
and they played some new songs like Up To Our Hips, Out and Subterranean which
I remembered very well when they were released the next year. But they also
played a song called " Nice Here, Around Here" which I thought was brilliant.
I am wondering if anyone and maybe especially those of you from UK, have heard
this song on a radio session or something at that time. I know they did
preform a couple of songs on some radio stations to coincide with the
Daytripper event. Tim Burgess is really using his voice on a full scale on
this song. I hope someone has heard of it....

OK, bye then, and please mail if you have any problems. I don't want anybody
to be unhappy with this list.

chao!

there was smoke pouring out of the machine! tim was on fire! so to salvage my

Instead of sending your message as a reply you need to mail it to the
address of the person you want to mail. Their address is generally
on the info point ast the top of the mail screen e.g. I can see youre
"bcp4619@omega.uta.edu"
Its a bit of a shot in the dark but with a moniker like "Dog, Man ,
Star" I figure you'd know of any good Suede lists or groups on the
Net. If you do could you tell me about them? Cheers.
Dave.
Man United are a bit good but they've got nothing on Cardiff City.

A friend of mine bought a copy of indian rope on 12 inch last week at a

I have to agree. What is up here? This is also one of the most inactive
mail lists that I have seen. C'mon people. Let's try to create some
coonversation here on the Charlies.

Ok, since not very much has been said on this list lately, I have some
questions:

Why is the band called "The Charlatans" ?
For that matter, why were the first three albuums named as they were -
"Some Friendly", "Between 10th and 11th", and "Up to our hips" ?
Was the song "Between 10th and 11th" ever released as a single?

and, I still haven't got an answer to the question:

Who is Day? (That name appears on the "The Only One I Know" single taking
credit for the writing of the 4 songs along with Blunt, Brookes, Burgess,
and Collins, instead of Baker's. My guess is that it's Baker's other
name...I don't know...)

"I can't even be bothered, energy breaks me down..."

Krassi

P.S. Happy Birthday to John Squire! I've got too much respect for this
genius!.....

Subject: Re: questions

Well, let's talk Charlatans now instead of everything else:

I guess many of you already know this, but it seems like Rob Collins did drive
the getaway car after the armed robber, knowing about what was happening right
from the start. I read in Sky magazine and in Q or something where Tim Burgess
admits what really happened. It also seemed like Tim wasn't too happy about
it, and therefore didn't visit Rob once when he was in prison. Tim said he
loved Rob now, though.

..who is Day? I've been wondering about that myself. Because on the Some
Friendly CD, the name Day isn't mentioned under The Only One I Know. I first
thought it was the former singer & guitarist's name, but his name wasn't Day
after all. I think you maybe have got the answer Krassi, that Jon Baker also
had another name, Day. It's hard to tell..

I don't think that "Between 10th & 11th" was ever released as a single. Not
official anyway. I may be wrong, but I have never heard that song being
officially released in anything but the Isolation LP.

Now, why is the third album called Up To Our Hips. I read in 109 a few years
ago, just before Rob went to prison, about the song Up To Our Hips. At that
time Tim wanted to call the album "Hair" or something like that. Anyway, they
supposedly came up with the title Up To Our Hips first, and then decided to
make a song with that title. They thought it was catchy, I guess. I remember
reading about that song becoming a single, but then Rob went to jail, and
everything took a bit more time than expected. I then read at the time of Up
To Our Hips' release, that they thought the title Up To Our Hips did describe
how it had been recording that album. It wasn't meant like that in the first
place, but Tim said they were up to their hips in shit and problems, so the
title got a deeper meaning.

I don't about the other titles, though. But "Between 10th & 11th" is a very
cool name for an album title I think. When I first read that they were going
to release Between 10th & 11th in Melody Maker, I thought they meant the new
album was going to be realeased between the 10th & 11ht of March (I think it
was around that time). It was close, though....

Cheers

Ah,
one of the great Charlatans mysteries. I don't know if I should pass
on my knowledge or not. I quite like the idea of bands having a bit of
a mysterious past. And, hopefully I won't offend anyone here, but
these are among the few things that us long-time fans have to remind
us that we've been there, done that and just know. On the other hand
we only know because we've asked Martin Blunt ! I'll just say it's
something to do with those big influences on the band in the early
days The Prisoners.

There we go. Is that what mailing lists are for ? A bit of a tease ?

I'll just end by saying that this tour has been the best in years and
last nights gig at the Manchester Apollo was just brilliant. I've
never seen the Charlatans at a festival and so this was the biggest
gig of theirs that I'd seen in ages. So many people and the band
deserve every bit of their success this year. And they did an encore
after Sproston Green which was such a surprise especially as it was
`Time for Living' off the Help album. I only wish I'd spoken to one of
the band backstage or at the hotel (just thought I'd drop that in !!)
to tell them but I think they know that it's been good.

As the song goes `This will be our year (it took a long time to come)'

The title for the second LP, "Between 10th&11th" was named after the
location of a NYC club called 'The Marquee', where the Charlatans played one
of their first North American shows in October 1990.

The club no longer exists , but during the early 90's it hosted many
first shows for numerous British bands (Blur, House of Love, Wedding
Present...)

I have the Charlatans UK vs. The Chemical Brothers. It's a
good collection, although if you already have Just When You're
Thinkin' Things Over single, you've already got one of the four
tracks.

There are three versions of Toothache -- the "Chemical Mix"
which is the same as the JWYTTO single, the "Dub Mix" (or
whatever it's called) which is a longer remix, and an
insturmental of the first mix. The Nine Acre Court remix,
which rounds out the collection, is very nice.

I wish more was included though, because you really only end up
with two tracks. Since it is a North American collection, they
should have at least included the Dust Bros. mix of Patrol. Oh
well. No one (at least not me) ever accused the U.S. arm of
Beggars Banquet of knowing how to market the Charlatans in the
U.S.

-Rich

P.S. I'm extremely jealous of all you folks in the UK. I saw
the Charlatans for the second time in Washington, D.C. back in
September and I would love to see them again. Enjoy their
awesome live show!!

Hi! I've got that release on CD myself. I agree with Richard that it's a
little bit sad with those three almost similar remixes of Toothache. But the
remix of Nine Acre Court is really good! I'm happy I bought it, but then I buy
everything by The Charlatans I don't have. It is a US release only, so it
might be a little of a collectors item in UK and Europe..

They've been in Toronto for two years straight...I guess it depends on
whether or not they release a new album.

I read in an interview in MM that when they finished Up to Our Hips they didn't
feel the album had been up to their best and started recording Charlatans
almost straight away. When they finished that Tim felt they had exhausted all
their best ideas and were therefore very happy with the album. I therefore
can't really see them releasing any new albums for the next 12 months,
especially as no recording will be taking place whilst they are still touring.

   dear all,

i went to see the charlies in southampton last tuesday and they were superb,
the crowd was really good and i enjoyed the fact it wasn't too packed together
and everyone had the chance to dance if they wanted not just to jump
 vertically up and down !

unfortuanately, they didn't play "time for living" as a second encore which
was a bit disappointing but was made up by these best bits :

 1. organ sound on "jwytto" and "tell everyone" was tops.
 2. tim worshipping martin at the start of sproston green
 3. crowd going wild to chemical brothers before start of gig
 4. sproston green was better than ever ( shame some people in crowd didn't
                                          know what it was )

anyway, it was a smashing time enjoyed by all.

                                      lots of love, dan.
