Hi, there's a new charlatans contest going on now for those of you who are interrested! There are still some great giveaways for those who win. Just go to the Charlatans' BackRoomWindow to join! btw. If some of you are waiting for some lyrics to come up on the BRW page, it will soon, but I'm a bit busy reading for exams, so everything goes a bit slowly :) Chao! ------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Nov 95 13:09:36 GMT From: mark@yacc.co.uk Subject: BRW Contest Is it me or is this another example of the 'Nets' bias toward the U.S.? I assume when the contest on Back Room Window says 'Charlatans U.K.' it means the groups first U.S. single. The first U.K. single didn't chart (Indian Rope), Actually, not in the top 50 anyway. I have no idea what the first U.S. single was! (BTW Nothing against your pages Eirik, it's Atlantic's fault!) I think Atlantic mean the first The Charlatans UK release in the US. I'm sorry this isn't clear enough, and that it will be hard for European fans to be part of the contest (if you know the answer, you're all welcome to answer of course). Anyway, I have asked Atlantic to make the question a bit more specific, so if you want be to sure that you send the right answer to the right question, you can wait 'till I announce what's the right question here on the list! Yes, this was Moo (or Cow or something), but had nothing to do with Beggars Banquet. They then signed for Mute Records and have in the recent past, left them. I know this is the Charlies list but does anyone know why the Inspirals left Mute and what they are now doing. (They are my _Joint_ favorite band!) The CD2 of the Jesus Hairdo single came with a Up To Our Hips Box Set in the UK. It's a green CD box with a silver The Charlatans logo, you can put cd1 adn CD1 of jesus Hairdo, Can't Get Out Of Bed, ..Easy Life.., and Up To Our Hips in it. I guess Republic records in Canada thought it was a good idea to put everything in that box, and then sell it, instead of how it worked in UK. A month or so ago, I was watching one of those cheezy tabloid shows and they were doing a story on John Bobbit (the guy who had his penis cut off). The music that they used was "Opportunity" or "109.2" (I can't remember at the moment). I had to pick my jaw up off of the floor! It's basically a green cardboard box that contains the following: Can't Get Out Of Bed CD5 I Never Want An Easy Life If Me And He Were Ever To Get There CD5 Jesus Hairdo (CD1) CD5 Jesus Hairdo (CD2) CD5 Up To Our Hips CD It says "Up To Our Hips Collection" on the side of the box and "The Charlatans" in a cute logo on the front. It also comes with a small note saying "with free Up To Our Hips Catalogue Library Case". The way it was originally released, it was sold with only the Jesus Hairdo (CD2) CD5 (the way I bought it) sealed in plastic. My guess is that Republic records have removed the plastic and included the four other CDs that the box is intended for in their sales promotion. I can't imagine why they're doing this though. The idea was that each of us will use one of the four tracks to record their part. So I'm gonna use one for the bass and the drum machine, Eirik will use one for the hammond organ, Justin (probably) could do the guitar on a third, and there's one open for the vocals. We agreed that it would be great fun! Unfortunately, I don't think that recording your voice on a (regular) tape recorder could work - it has to be a 4-track... So, see if you could get your hands on one for an hour or so... Let us know, even if you don't manage to find one!... I just hope that he can take this as a warning that he's got to look after himself but that must be scant consolation to anybody who was messed about with the cancelation. Anyway things can never run smoothly for the Charlatans and this time they had to contend with the fire alarm going off during Sproston Green and the inevitable evacuation leading to a slightly curtailed performance. It was a great gig in a very strange venue and if there are any trainspotters out there who were at Warwick it'd be nice to know in more detail what the set was. I suppose I might get a better idea at Lancaster on Monday or Leeds on Thursday but I'm usually too busy dancing to concentrate on what they've played. Stay tuned for further tour snippets Martin P.S. I know that the Peel session version of `Between 10th and 11th' was put out on a free cassette from Lime Lizard magazine if anyone is interested. The only downers at the gig was the very bad security, ie they wait until evryone is dying before passing out the water, and the fire alarm, although you can get a four pound rebate because of it. Not bad to see the Charlatans for a fiver!! P.S. I was thinking about Krassi's question...the discography covers all of the b-sides, so I won't go into detail, but here are some of the best non-album charlies tunes. "Indian Rope" - the first single "Always In Mind" - I have this on a few boots, but I don't think that it was ever officially released "Over Rising" - the first post-Friendly single, one of my favourites, there is also a cool instrumental version "Happen To Die" - this b-side has appeared twice, an incredible song! "Me In Time" - Tim called it the worst record they've ever done, but I still like it "Weirdo" - Alternate Version - b-side from the "Weirdo" single, very cool & James Bond like "Tremelo Song" - Alternate take - this was the single release, better than the album version "Stir It Up" - this b-side was better than most of the "Up To Our Hips" album material jim ------------------------- Date: Mon, 13 Nov 1995 12:43:15 MST From: TORGO Subject: RE: "Between 10th and 11th" - the song yes... the song called 10th and 11th is on isolation. --------------------------- Date: Mon, 13 Nov 1995 12:53:22 -0800 From: klyakov@ucsd.edu (Lyakov) Subject: RE: "Between 10th and 11th" - the song >yes... >the song called 10th and 11th is on isolation. Krassi ------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Nov 1995 17:13:13 -0500 From: Balluff@aol.com Subject: Hello all! Since this is my first post to the Charlatans mail list, I'll say thanks to the people that made all this possible. Hooray. I've been listening to the Charlatans since the early days of fall 1990, and have seen them twice here in Los Angeles, first at the UCLA Grand ballroom (where I went to school) in Feb of 1991 and just last month at the American Legion Hall in Hollywood. The show last month was very good, and the band sounded very tight. They played a good retrospective of songs, mostly from Some Friendly and Between 10th & 11th, with a few of the new ones sprinkled in. I would have liked to hear more of the songs off the new album, as it is very good. I've been lucky enough to aqcuire most of the standard releases, my favorites being the Isolation live promo CD and the 2cd Tremolo Song single set. Alas, seeing as how the Charlatans have a rather small following here in Los Angeles, I have not come across many live tapes, etc. I would be most interested in trading live tapes with anyone. Unfortunately, all I have to offer in trade at the moment are tapes of the Isolation live CD, the Hot Licks live CD and a radio recording of the 1992 show at the Palace in Hollywood. I also have MANY Paul Weller live tapes to trade as well. In addition, I also have one extra copy of the US promo-only Sproston Green CD available for sale. The ONLY song from Between 10th & 11th was "Weirdo", while they played "Feelin' Holy", "Just Lookin'", "Here Comes a Soul Saver", "Crashin' In", "Just When You're Thinkin' Things Over", and "Toothache", which are all from the new album. It was a great show! Justin ------------------------- Date: Mon, 13 Nov 1995 19:56:41 -0500 From: Balluff@aol.com Subject: Re: Hello all! Justin, Okay, okay, you're right. My memory failed me there for a moment - they did play a bunch of the new songs at the American Legion Hall show in Hollywood. I guess I had a few cocktails during Menswear's opening act. Okay, maybe I had more than a few. Regardless, it really was a good show. Upon receipt of a letter you wrote to Eric Ginter (who had the foresight to ASK us first...) I wish to ask you about your dislocated opinion of Republic Records. Questions for you: 1) have you been here? 2) do you know who runs Republic Records? 3) have you ever talked to us? Here's some fascinating info for you: The JESUS HAIRDO cd single was, in fact a TWO part single, as most singles are these days. The CD BAR (which is the former work place of those who run Republic) got in one part...The other part had - in limited quantities - the now infamous green box which had room for the other singles and the album. Please take note of this - only ONE part of JESUS HAIRDO had the box with it and, from what i'm told, even this was limited.(Ian - another former CDB employee, was in England 2 months ago, purchased the Jesus Hairdo singles, and neither of them came with the 'box'. Perhaps HMV in London were in cahoots with the CD Bar? It's that global Charlatan's conspiracy...) The UP TO OUR HIPS BOX SET listed is an official Beggars Banquet release. The catalogue number is BBL147CDB. Is this a reissue of the Jesus Hairdo box format with discs included? Could be. Does Republic wish to bother "putting together their own box sets"? No. We've got better things to do. Why do you "smell a rat"? We do have a mouse in our store and the occasional cockroach but we don't let them repackage discs for us... As former employees (but NOT management or owners) of the CD BAR, I suppose we're sorry you think you got "screwed" when you didn't get your green box. Assuming you come into Toronto now and then, do us a favour and VISIT our store. We try to be very honest and informed about the stuff we sell and though it would be easy to dismiss this as idle netgossip I suppose we're a little too sensitive... Beyond that, I hope you continue to enjoy slagging stores and people from the safety of your computer. First of all, I don't think Jim wanted to miscredit Republic Records in any way, at least that's nothing that the Jim I "know" would do from what I know. Second, I did post a message to this list saying exactly that the green collectors box came with the second part of JESUS HAIRDO (BBQ 32 CD2) which was a limited edition release of this cd single. It was released without the green collectors box as well, as a normal release, so I don't see where the problem about that lies. The "new" release from Beggars Banquet (ie. the UP TO OUR HIPS BOX SET) is a surprise for me though, and I think for all on the list as well. I wonder if it's going to be released worldwide or only in Canada? Does anyone know? I would also be interested to know if it really is the same box as before only filled with the four singles and the full-length and released as a new release. Thanks, Erik...I certainly wasn't on a mission to "slag" anyone. Just so everyone knows, the owners of Republic Records are former EMPLOYEES, not owners, of the CD Bar, as I was mistakenly informed. I sent them a private response before I realized that they had forwarded their message to the entire list. I do apologize for my mistake, but can't agree with everything they said; The CD Bar did screw me out of my "Up To Our Hips" box. They are claiming that they only received the first CD (which didn't come with anything) but I ordered, and received, both parts from the CD Bar. I am not repeating this to discredit anyone, but simply as a warning for those who order stuff via the telephone & internet. Anyway, that was the CD Bar and, as I mentioned, I had no problem tracking down the green boxes (I have two) at a later date. I'm glad that Republic is on the 'Net and, while their message could have been more proffessional, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. jim --------------------- Date: Wed, 15 Nov 1995 22:42:56 -0400 (EDT) From: niconstandis@vaxsar.vassar.edu (nicole constandis) Subject: video A friend mentioned to me he thought the Charlies had another new 1/2 hour video out...can anyone shed some light for me?
