ROSKILDE FESTIVAL SELLS TICKETS

On April 1st ROSKILDE FESTIVAL '97 will start selling the remaining approx. 75,000 tickets out of the total 90,000 4-day tickets that are sold for this year's festival that takes place on June 26, 27, 28, and 29. Tickets are available from the usual box offices. In December 1996, 15,000 tickets were sold (13,000 in 1995) at the "Christmas sale" without any advertising - in spite of the fact that each customer is allowed to buy "only" 4 tickets. In 1996, the last festival ticket was sold on April 29th. Time will show if this year's ticket hunting season will be shorter. One thing is clear: the Roskilde Festival does not lower its quality level, either the musical level or the service level. The organisers in Roskilde are almost ready with all the details of this year's roar of rock. The framework was established during the autumn, and throughout the winter about 140 volunteers in 40 working committees have been working on all the tasks and elements that will determine Roskilde's position as Europe's flagship among festivals with its continued ability to give the public the most fresh musical experiences - and the best and most conscious service with deep respect for resources and environment. Roskilde Festival '97 will again be a rock festival. To an even higher degree than in previous years the music bill will contain contemporary, new, young rock music whereas the well-tested and good ones will be fewer. The Roskilde Festival's characteristic during a number of years is now penetrating. The new and young acts are now not just promising, they are actually in the group of leading bands. There will also be spots for the legends, but smaller in number and playing smaller parts. Thereby, many things will be wonderfully unpredictable for most people at the Roskilde Festival '97. Again at this year's festival - number 27 in a row - the music will be presented from seven music stages. One of the stages will be new with regard to arrangement and contents. The ROSKILDE BALLROOM will present music that invites to dancing. It will be presented in programme blocks of different ethnic origins, in a marquee with a wooden floor. The dance floor will be surrounded by a small scaffolding stand which will screen the floor from daylight. The stage itself will be lower than the rock stages. The area surrounding the Roskilde Ballroom will include food stalls, bars, and other trade that "fits into" the concept of the stage and thereby emphasise its special characteristic. Musicwise the ROSKILDE BALLROOM will concentrate on themes such as SALSA/CARIBBEAN, ZYDECO, POLKA/TEXAS, NEW ORLEANS/LOUISIANA, TANGO, ZAïRE, and THE BALKANS. From the inciting programme schedule the following acts are now published: KLIMAX (Cuba), BRAVE COMBO (US), DIRTY DOZEN BRASS BAND (US), BO DOLLIS & THE WILD MAGNOLIAS (US), DIBLO DIBALA (Zaïre), TANGO PASSION/SEXTETO MAYOR (Argentina), AWILD LONGOMBA (Zaïre), PAPA WEMBA (Zaïre), and CORDERO & LOS GRAND DANESES (DK) - a segment of those twenty-odd bands whom the Roskilde Ballroom will present. The music programmes of the other stages are also nearby ready. The first names will be published as from mid-April in newsletters to the media and on the festival's telephone service lines in Holland 0174 298207 in Finland 09 1480 3400 also by Internet: http://www.Roskilde-Festival.dk/ and on MTV-Text, page 575. The hunt for this year's Roskilde Festival tickets has begun. As mentioned above the Roskilde Festival will take place on June 26-29, 1997. Best regards, ROSKILDE FESTIVAL '97

ROSKILDE FESTIVAL IS SELLING

- but no reason for ticket panic TICKET SALES The 90,000 tickets for Roskilde Festival '97 were put on sale on December 2nd. As per December 13th (i.e. after 12 days' sale) a total of almost 8,000 tickets for next summer's rock music event had been sold in the Scandinavian countries, Finland and Germany. Last year - in 1995 - when tickets for Roskilde Festival were put on sale in December for the first time, the sales figure as per December 13th was close to 5,000. According to the festival organisers the reason why so many more tickets are sold in December this year (an increase as per Dec. 13th of about 60%) is that many persons thought that it was "sold out too rapidly" last year. Still, the sales figure this year is surprising because each customer is only allowed to buy 4 tickets for Roskilde '97. For Roskilde '96 there was no such limit. Advance sale of tickets will continue all December, then close down, and re-open on April 1st. ROSKILDE IS LOOKING FOR DECORATIONS ARTISTS Attempting to continue the development of the artistic atmosphere of the festival (besides the music) Roskilde Festival's Decorations Committee asks for suggestions from/contact to artists with ideas and proposals for projects that can colour Roskilde '97. Projects involving the concept of LIGHT will be given first priority, and that goes for DAYLIGHT as well as ARTIFICIAL LIGHT. Cues for inspiration could be light/shadow, flying objects, mobiles, constellations, sculptures and light, and heavenly bodies. The projects may be functional, e.g. installations that people can sit on or be guided by, or they may be motifs or subjects of senses and imagination. There will be two main types of decoration: 1) spatial installations to be placed indoors (e.g. in the stage marquees) or outdoors, and 2) surface decorations (e.g. on the hoarding). In general, you should think of HUGE dimensions and surfaces - and of bright colours. Artists and others are invited to send ideas and proposals to Roskilde Festival, Att.: Decorations Committee, Havsteensvej 11, DK-4000 Roskilde, Denmark not later than January 10, 1997. Finally, the Roskilde Festival organisation would like to take this opportunity to thank all friends for the year 1996 and to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a peaceful 1997. Best regards, ROSKILDE FESTIVAL '97

We're back

After a well deserved rest ( if I may say so )
the Roskilde Festival web site is back in action, and we will
try to keep up with all the news from the Roskilde Festival, and
one or two other things.

But first of all here is the first newsletter regarding Roskilde '97.

best regards

ROSKILDE FESTIVAL

NEWSLETTER No. 01/97
ROSKILDE FESTIVAL ON SALE

- tickets are expected to be in great demand as from December 2nd

Starting on December 2nd, Roskilde Festival will offer 90,000 4-day tickets
for sale - with the promise of usual high qualility and contemporarity in
the music profile and again increased attention to service, environment,
food quality, etc.

To make sure that as many festival fans as possible will have the chance to
buy a genuine festival ticket at the correct price, it has been decided
that each customer can buy a maximum of 4 tickets. "One reason why so many
did not succeed in getting a ticket in 1996 was the extensive buying up of
tickets intended for resale. Our solidarity lies clearly with our audience,
not with the black market's people," says the festival management.

Requests for purchase of more than 4 tickets can be telefaxed (+45-4632
1499) to Roskilde Festival. The request must include the reasons for the
request and documentation of who/what the customer is. This possibility is
intended for travel agencies, bus agencies, school classes, etc.

Ticket sales will close at the end of December, re-open on April 1st, and
continue as long as there are tickets left. In 1995 the festival was sold
out as per June 10th, in 1996 as per April 29th.

A detailed programme for Roskilde '97 is not ready yet, but the organisers
in Roskilde no doubt know that previous years' successes oblige. The
audience will have great expectations to every aspect of Roskilde Festival.
"And we will live up to that once again - plus a bit more," is the
statement from Leif Skov, head of the Music Committee.
