Recently, they've got a new singer (Lies has quit the band because 'not enough time'), but her voice isn't that different, om stage she's even more mysterious. Right now, they are touring in Belgium and the Netherlands and working on another record. Influences are pretty much 4AD- and early Creation-bands (This Mortal Coil, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, CT, etc>, and they really like to use fx-pedals and as much effects as possible (without overkill). It's already been released, and is a 2 CD compilation - 1 CD is a "best of" tracks from the 2 albums, and the 2nd is covers, demos, b-sides (or else those are on disc 1) and a bunch of stuff like that. It's all a matter of how desperate you are for it. At that price, you may want to just look for all the eps seperately. Action Records had a fairly big selection on Slowdive eps. Check http://www.action-records.co.uk or use Alta Vista or Gemm to search through multiple sites. ------------------------------- Date: Tue, 3 Jun 1997 00:54:31 +0200 (MET DST) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Latest letter from Rachel We can all count ourselves lucky - here's the latest letter from Rachel! > Date: 27 May 97 15:25:30 EDT > From: Rachel Goswell <101502.2725@CompuServe.COM> > Subject: Re: Avalyn Digest Vol.2 #10 In reply to the ever-increasing debacle about Blue Day. 1. Contrary to what many may think, we do not own the rights to the records we make. Obviously, if there are people who still want to buy Slowdive records, we would be very happy if they were available to them. Please keep in mind that even if these records were reissued, we would not see any money from their sales. 2. In terms of record sales, the only way a band makes money (ie royalties) is if they are in the very enviable position of being widely known around the world, and not a band with a cult (albeit very loyal) following, such as Slowdive were. We never saw any money from record sales. The money that we made in our career came from publishing and performance rights. 3. It is irrelevant, however, that even if these records were reissued, that we would not receive any money. My objection to the bootleg cd of Blue Day has absolutely nothing to do with money and everything to do with principle. The fact is we worked hard to make that record and are very glad that people enjoy it, and on behalf of the band I apologise to all our fans who are having trouble finding our back catalogue. If I still had copies of Blue Day, I would gladly send them out free to fans rather than see someone make money off of our work. Some people may think that there is no harm done, seeing as we wouldn't receive money anyway, but the point is, that is OUR record, and no-one has the right to make money off it, irrespective of supply and demand. By bootlegging and selling our work this person is in a position where he is crossing us in a personal sense, and crossing Creation Records in a legal sense. If anyone wants to see Blue Day re-released, all I can suggest is e-mailing Creation. I hope this doesn't sound all bitchy and ungrateful to our fans. I am very pleased and honoured that so many people still take the time to give our music a listen and to keep in touch with us! Anyway, Slowdive was great fun and I hope that people remember that we have a new band called Mojave 3. I realise that not every Slowie fan will be happy with our progression, but keep in mind that our first EP's (which make up Blue Day) are 5-6 years old, and that we were 19 when we were signed to Creation. Now in our mid twenties we have been exposed to much more music and simply don't want to restrict ourselves to the same style forever. 4. Finally, yes, there is unreleased material in existense; however as I said before, Creation own the rights to these songs too, so Neil and I are not in a position to release any rarities records or the such like. I would encourage people to tape Blue Day from those that have it on this list, or indeed buy it second hand at a reasonable price. I have always found it highly disturbing the prices that are asked for some records. Remember SBK was responsible for the release of Souvlaki w/Blue Day. Blue Day is just a collection of the EP's that was for Europe (this was Creations idea), as the EPs weren't released and they thought it would be a nice way of presenting our earlier work to any that had not heard them before. I don't mind people taping our records or bootlegging our gigs and swapping them FOR FREE. I just don't agree with people being ripped off. And I don't agree with Mr Stacks lack of courtesy to ask us about producing a cd of our work and charging money for it. Anyway it's time to quit the bickering, tho it has been interesting reading peeps thoughts on the matter. Just tape the record from someone, just don't pay moronic prices! That's all. So NICO, you are so MISGUIDED about me! It will be a private auction, of course, so I will notify the highest bidder in one week, or sooner if there seem to be no more bids coming in after a few days. Also, a question. Was Blue Day ever released on vinyl? I didn't think it was, but some guys who run a record store not far from here said they had sold somebody a copy on 12" format, which I thought was odd.
