More like "between > Slowdive and Mojave 3" release. Yes, I'd agree with that, but the sound of Nearfield (their album) has a lot to do with the producer or the label or something. Their on an ambient-ish label called Silent. The sounds that do break out of the ambience on several tracks suggest to me that they could sound much, uh, louder under different circumstances. Maybe their second album will be different. Are they still around? I have to add my agreement here too. As I've already told Mike, I think Closedown sound much more like early Chapterhouse than anything Slowdive have done, although there's bits of rumbling, whirring ambient-type stuff on Nearfield that makes me think of Main, too, for some reason. >The closest I have have heard bands come to the Slowdive sound - comes >from two bands, one is called "Bizarre" (from Estonia, though they don't >sound like that today unfortunately) Speaking of bands from Estonia, does anyone know anything about a band called Roober Oivik (sp?)? I never said they were identical to Slowdive; I just want to lead a few people in their direction because they are a superb dreamy/ambient pop band that follow in the same footsteps as Slowdive as far as textures and instrumentation. To anyone interested, they have recorded a second album but I am not sure whether it has been released or if the band is still together. I have tried to get in touch with Kim (who runs Silent Records), but I've had no luck. If it means anything to anyone, the shop owner where I bought the "nearfield" album a couple of years ago told me that Rachel had been through (her friends live in the same neighbourhood in downtown Toronto) I was impressed by the album. I would be interested to hear from Rachel as to whether or not this tale is true... it would have taken place around the time of Slowdive's last live performance (@ Lee's Palace) in the spring of '94 (???????). They're a bit like MBV sometimes, apparently, and > John Peel is supposed to be keen on them. > > Larry Yes, I know a bit, though I'm no authority on the spelling either. They did a Peel session in (I think) summer 1993. They made it to the UK by catching a bus from Tallinn to Warsaw, waiting overnight at the bus station there then proceeding across the continent... all on the stlg150 each BBC session fee. I believe they stayed with Peel while in England. Peel also met with them and did an interview when he took his show into Eastern Europe for a couple of weeks in 1994. As he had previously claimed to listeners they seemed like really nice kids (unemployed or students I think.) Now - the music. I taped the session, and probably also one or two other tracks Peel played at the above times (I tend to miss the show due to its dreadful scheduling these days, so don't know if he's featured them more recently.) I can't really remember what it sounds like, but probably much closer to conventional indie rock than MBV, though fairly good; almost certainly not much like Slowdive. I'll dig out the tape and report back. Releases - I know they released an album on a Swedish label in '93. And don't put any stock on this, but they may have switched to a domestic label the following year. That's all really, Philip PS May as well take this chance to politely disagree with Erik and say that I much prefer 5EP and Pygmalion to Slowdive's earlier stuff, with the significant exception of the debut EP. No doubt us fans come from a variety of minimalist/ambient, guitar noise and indie traditions, or rather in many cases more than one but with varying emphases. This breadth of appeal is a strength of shoegazing, and I find it a bit of a pity that the band now have forsaken the challenges and rewards of such eclecticism. ---------------------------- Date: Wed, 7 Aug 1996 12:01:02 +0500 (GMT+0500) From: David Sanchez Vasquez Subject: ETERNAL (fwd) ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Wed, 7 Aug 1996 11:49:36 +0500 (GMT+0500) From: David Sanchez Vasquez To: avalyn@lysator.liu.se Subject: ETERNAL Hello everybody ! i see many mails in this days talking about Closedown , iwould want give my opinion ,but i don't know like they sounds.... A successful tour for * us I think. 4AD are determined to put lots of money into us next year to * spend 3-4 months over there touring. THis will be good, though I think our * brains will definately be fried by the end of that; they were nearly gone * after 6 weeks, let alone 4 months. Still, can't complain can I?!!!!! * * So after Shaving The Pavement, we had all of 6 days off, and went over to * France for two and a half weeks to support The Divine Comedy. It started * off a bit strangely as we expected Lush & Scheer to be there, but after a * day, we settled in nicely, and The DC's are a great bunch of people; and * incidentally a great band. I recommend everyone go out and buy their albums!! * They are doing really well in England at the moment. Things have really taken * off for them. We'd like to be able to bring them to America next year (as * they haven't been over yet), so who knows? Far too early to say. Anyway, * firm friendships were made on that tour. The French gigs were fun, and * again we met alot of nice people. We're always meeting nice people * everywhere. Makes it all the more worthwhile. * * So now I'm going to bring you up to date with everything. I have been reading * the messages from the list; to answer one question about Toronto' in '94, yes * we were no doubt in the record shop. It's highly likely. I would just like to * point out that I do not have a fiance from Toronto. I did have a boyfriend * originally from there, but after nearly 2 years, we have split up, so I'd * appreciate less gossip about my private life! Okay, ENOUGH>>>> * * August: Neil, Ian & Simon have moved into a house together down in Cornwall * (all very cosy). Currently they are soundproofing a couple of rooms so we * can record in there. Various bits of equipment are being bought for that. * Simon said there's a great sense of "Comeradery" between them, and they * each have their specialist areas in DIY. I hope SO!!! * * I am also shortly moving house, so August is the month for us all to get * our shit together basically. We have all been writing songs, and are going * to mould together in September to thrash through them all and weed out the * baddies. The studio should be ready (theoretically anyway) for us to demo * album tracks then. * * October will please a few people in such places as SWEDEN, GERMANY, DENMARK, * BELGIUM, SWITZERLAND, AUSTRIA, THE NETHERLANDS. yes we are coming over for * a tour for 3 weeks with Lisa Germano. * * The soundtrack music for "I am the Elephant and U R The Mouse", may be * released via 4AD as a mail order item only. However this has only been * very vaguely discussed and is by no means concrete yet! * * After the European tour, we will come home and finish the recording of the * second album. We plan to release some singles from this. Tentative release * date for the LP is March of next year....Line up in the band remains the * same as our live set up with Simon on electric guitar, and Poppy on the * piano. We are planning on introducing some hammond on the next record also. * * So that wraps all the Mojave news for the current time! * * Warmest regards to everyone, * and on behalf of Mojave 3 this is Rachel signing off..............:) --------------------------------- Date: Sun, 11 Aug 1996 03:08:09 +0200 (MET DST) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: re: Roober Oivik On Tue, 6 Aug 1996, "P.D.Howard" wrote: >> Speaking of bands from Estonia, does anyone know anything about a band >> called Roober Oivik (sp?)? Okay, that I can go along with. :-) They do play ambient, dreamy pop - but from what I have heard, they are a lot closer to the Slowdive sound on their earlier recordings, ie. their demos. Someone said that Nearfield suffered much from Cascone's production, and that it "retained only fragments of the blissful quality of those tapes". So, the question is - does anyone have their demos?! > To anyone interested, they have recorded a second album but I am not sure > whether it has been released or if the band is still together. Aha! This is interesting! Any news - please post it to the list! If Silent Records is no more, their sound (and producer) might have changed? Anyone? //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ----------------------------- Date: Sun, 11 Aug 1996 10:27:09 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Baker Subject: The look for Closedown continues.... Hello... it's Mike responding to Eric's email from Saturday. If anyone lives in the San Fransisco area, I am pretty sure that Closedown never relocated from the city. So, if someone down there took the time to look around, maybe we could find the band _and_ those demos that Eric _and myself_ are so interested in. Has anyone seen the videos for "Shine" and "Morning Rise"? I am very interested to hear the concepts behind them and if the quality runs in the same direction as the clip for "Catch The Breeze". I have a respectable sized interview of Slowdive on video and they allude very briefly to the clips, but never discuss them or anything behind the production. I haven't heard it still, though i'd like to know something more about it -cause i have a zine review-. lovesliescrushing-bowery electric-ecstasy of saint theresa-silvania And talking about ethereal-noise scene, there's a new band here called Claroscuro, that is very ala silvania with A LOT from slowdive and mbv. Nah, Louise is enjoying her solo career too much. Shame though, I really liked "Just One Step From Heaven"! Only joking, only joking... :) Philip ------------------------------- Date: Thu, 15 Aug 1996 01:07:09 +0200 (MET DST) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: The film "I Am The Elephant and U R The Mouse" I have recently received information from the director (Forest Wise) about the film "I Am The Elephant and U R The Mouse" and the possibility of ordering the film (on NTSC video tape). I mentioned that he might find that there are a bunch of people that would like to buy it on this mailing list, and he liked the idea. This would be the director's cut (and not the shorter one to be released later) which includes all the Slowdive songs written for it as well. Here's where you can help - Forest wanted to know how many (roughly) on the list would be interested in ordering the Director's Cut of the film and how many of those who want it in NTSC format and how many would want it in PAL format. If enough people requests PAL format, he is willing to make copies in that format as well. The price he mentioned would be about US $40.00 (which includes shipping and handling), though it might be lower depending on the amount of interested people. * So, if you are interested - please let me know by sending e-mail to me at: chief@lysator.liu.se PLEASE NOTE: that by saying that you are interested, you are NOT automatically saying that you _will buy_ a copy in the end. Forest just want to get a rough estimate on how many that are interested, that's all. Another interesting piece of information regarding the company that lies behind the film (and the new one to be made mentioned earlier) is that Neil Halstead is a part of the company! //Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se) ------------------------------- End of The Avalyn Digest #1.09 ******************************
