If we could get somone from England to cover Europe, (I think I may already have someone) and someone from east and west USA to cover the larger part of the americas (I'll try and cover Canada), all with CD burners, then everyone could be guarnteed to have one of these if they so wish. Absolutley nothing! When the digital audio tape (DAT) came out, record manufacturers felt threatened by it because purely digital copies of an original CD could be made, ie with no loss of quality - tapes were always considered harmless because of the innequities with its format (ie: tape stauration, decay, generation loss, decibel loss, etc, etc, etc). If there was any hoopla on digital technologies and copyright it probably came from this - with CD-Rs I am sure publishers and record companies aren't exactly thrilled...but then again TV hated the VCR...consumerism sometimes works in the consumers favour... And I haven't gotten any flack from Rachel. 1) The (ex) band doesn't collect royalties on high-priced re-sales. 2) There is no slowdive anymore. There is no "band" to consider. 3) Rachel says slowdive's work amounted to "funny noises". Even if one was so considerate as to worry about former band members' opinions of a bootleg, this would seem to mitigate such concerns. 4) Anything that keeps money OUT of David Stack's pockets is a worthwhile endeavor, which was why I started posting the MP3s. Don't ask morality questions. We're all fans here. Do it at-cost. Once it's out there, it can't be un-done so any further ethics ponderances will be moot. -------------- > Just joined the list. Even if one > was so considerate as to worry about former band members' opinions of a > bootleg, this would seem to mitigate such concerns. Your logic is rather patchy, however, i feel confident that Neil, Rachel, and Ian are all proud of their former work with Slowdive. People say things they don't mean. Andy Bell called Ride "an apprenticeship" and that Ride was just "4 kids messing around in a studio." in an email interview, he said he was proud of his work with Ride, and that the remarks were out of context. Journalists have a proclivity towards construing things toward their own fashion. I'd bet the same is true in Rachel's case. > 4) Anything that keeps money OUT of David Stack's pockets is a > worthwhile endeavor, which was why I started posting the MP3s. Congrats! you are the Avalyn listee of the month! Seriously, it's great that you do post the .mp3s. However, if Rachel explicitly asked you not to post them, i'd hope you wouldn't. Forget copyrights and the like, if she asked you not to post them, it would be the considerate thing to do to comply. > Don't ask morality questions. ludicrous statement. All right, All right! it is high time I put a stop to this misconception -- or what looks to be one, as far as I can tell. This is something I meant to do mos. ago but never got 'round to it ...... FIRST, the quote re. "funny noises" was Neil's not Rachel's [unless the thing was typed in wrong]! How the one whom originally posted the above got this mixed up I cannot fathom .... At the time, I figured most would've picked up on the above; so I did not make comment. Since, however, it became clear that my assumption was incorrect to some extent .... SECOND, what Neil was quoted as saying did not imply that he thought Slowdive's body of work merely "amounted to funny noises" .... Rather he was quoted as saying something to the effect that the band sent much of their time in the studio creating "funny noises" .... Maybe only a fine distinction -- depending on how one wants to take it -- but a distinction, nevertheless ... Anyway, because of all the above, I still have the original post saved; and will send it (separately, I'm afraid ...) along. I wonder if Rachel still reads this list? If so, I'm a little surprised she didn't somehow correct the above mis-attribution some time ago ... but, then, I'm sure she has better things to do .... best, Michael ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 20:08:50 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael Gilham Subject: : The Source! Rachel is, unfortunately, erroneous: unless he knows something the author did not :-) .... --mg ***************************************************** Here's an article from yesterday's student paper here at the University of Texas at Austin. Very informative and concise article if you ask me! I'm a little hurt that Rachel dismisses Slowdive as "funny noises" however. Myron **************************** England's Mojave 3 perform rare show Stephanie Trong Daily Texan Staff It's been two years since the London-based Mojave 3 have released anything and fans have had the chance to hear new material in person. Those who attended the band's March 21 performance at the Electric Lounge during South by Southwest are several months ahead of the game -- the upcoming album isn't scheduled for release in England until next August, and the U.S. release date will be even farther in the future. Guitarist/vocalist Neal Halstead said the group (also comprised of vocalist Rachel Goswell and drummer Ian McCutcheon) started putting together demos for the new record as early as January 1997, but since then, time has sort of disappeared. He said the group had trouble finding the sort of environment it wanted to mix the recording in and moved around quite a lot. "There were a couple of points where we started mixing in studios and decided that we didn't want to carry on, so things kind of got put back because of that," said Halstead. With the album just completed, the band wanted some feedback, and the Austin audience was the only city in the United States lucky enough to offer this service. Mojave 3, on the independent record label 4AD, is no longer licensed in America through Warner Brothers. As a result, all future plans for a U.S. tour are currently on hold, and the SXSW show was one of a kind. "It just came at a good time, because we've really just finished the record and we haven't got a license in America anymore, so this is a good opportunity to look for another deal out there," Halstead said. The music unveiled last week sounded different than material from the band's past. Since the release of their first record Ask Me Tomorrow, Mojave 3 have expanded to five members with the addition of another guitarist and a piano/organ player. The presence of these new members added enough volume to shatter the quiet ambience that had previously made this band so treasured. Every song was a strummy, upbeat lament spared of any subtle moments. Sounding very much like a true Country & Western group, one would think long-stretching highways and tumbleweeds were prevalent in England. Halstead said the new lineup provides a fuller sound. "Essentially what we tried to do with the first record was to keep it quite minimal and it just ended up being very acoustic. There's more to the new record because there's now a feeling of a whole band." The songs on Mojave 3's first record were indeed minimal. The music on Ask Me Tomorrow reflected the aesthetics of the wide-open space from which the band takes its name. In the desert, against the backdrop of nothing but miles of sand, colors appear more vibrant, the wind is louder, and the sun's heat is more piercing. Similarly, the soothing vocals, acoustic and slide guitar, and brushed drums were used so sparingly that their effect on the listener was magnified, free of unnecessary crowding and complexity. The occasional burst of sound was like a bloom amongst expansive nothingness, so breathtaking because of its rarity. That said, one would never guess this band contains three former members of Slowdive, the British effects-laden outfit that was once a major player on the English pedal-hopping front. Instead of getting noisier and more earsplitting with age, the band has altogether spared its audience of a need to wear earplugs, opting for a softer sound that has previously been compared to the likes of Neil Young, Mazzy Star and Leonard Cohen. "With Slowdive there was more emphasis on the actual production, and we spent a lot of time in the studio must making funny noises, really," Halstead said. "With Mojave we really wanted to try and get a sense of intimacy." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jun 1998 03:13:31 +0300 (EET DST) From: henrik Subject: in mind remixes hello, has anyone seen in mind remixes or morningrise on sale (preferably on cd) somewhere (mail order maybe)? it's not easy to get your hands on things down here in this corner of the world... - h. -- Moritz.botany.ut.ee/~kukulain kukulain@Moritz.botany.ut.ee ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 20:27:00 EDT From: KingoGrief@aol.com Subject: Re: Re[2]: Slowdive Compilation: In a message dated 98-06-28 17:57:01 EDT, you write: << Has anybody asked what the band or Rachel think of the enormous amount of money that's being paid for the out of print stuff?
