Very informative and concise article if you ask me! I'm a little hurt that Rachel dismisses Slowdive as "funny noises" however. Myron England's Mojave 3 perform rare show Stephanie Trong Daily Texan Staff It's been two years since the London-based Mojave 3 have released anything and fans have had the chance to hear new material in person. Those who attended the band's March 21 performance at the Electric Lounge during South by Southwest are several months ahead of the game -- the upcoming album isn't scheduled for release in England until next August, and the U.S. release date will be even farther in the future. Guitarist/vocalist Neal Halstead said the group (also comprised of vocalist Rachel Goswell and drummer Ian McCutcheon) started putting together demos for the new record as early as January 1997, but since then, time has sort of disappeared. He said the group had trouble finding the sort of environment it wanted to mix the recording in and moved around quite a lot. "There were a couple of points where we started mixing in studios and decided that we didn't want to carry on, so things kind of got put back because of that," said Halstead. With the album just completed, the band wanted some feedback, and the Austin audience was the only city in the United States lucky enough to offer this service. Mojave 3, on the independent record label 4AD, is no longer licensed in America through Warner Brothers. As a result, all future plans for a U.S. tour are currently on hold, and the SXSW show was one of a kind. "It just came at a good time, because we've really just finished the record and we haven't got a license in America anymore, so this is a good opportunity to look for another deal out there," Halstead said. The music unveiled last week sounded different than material from the band's past. Since the release of their first record Ask Me Tomorrow, Mojave 3 have expanded to five members with the addition of another guitarist and a piano/organ player. The presence of these new members added enough volume to shatter the quiet ambience that had previously made this band so treasured. Every song was a strummy, upbeat lament spared of any subtle moments. Sounding very much like a true Country & Western group, one would think long-stretching highways and tumbleweeds were prevalent in England. Halstead said the new lineup provides a fuller sound. "Essentially what we tried to do with the first record was to keep it quite minimal and it just ended up being very acoustic. There's more to the new record because there's now a feeling of a whole band." The songs on Mojave 3's first record were indeed minimal. The music on Ask Me Tomorrow reflected the aesthetics of the wide-open space from which the band takes its name. In the desert, against the backdrop of nothing but miles of sand, colors appear more vibrant, the wind is louder, and the sun's heat is more piercing. Similarly, the soothing vocals, acoustic and slide guitar, and brushed drums were used so sparingly that their effect on the listener was magnified, free of unnecessary crowding and complexity. The occasional burst of sound was like a bloom amongst expansive nothingness, so breathtaking because of its rarity. That said, one would never guess this band contains three former members of Slowdive, the British effects-laden outfit that was once a major player on the English pedal-hopping front. Instead of getting noisier and more earsplitting with age, the band has altogether spared its audience of a need to wear earplugs, opting for a softer sound that has previously been compared to the likes of Neil Young, Mazzy Star and Leonard Cohen. "With Slowdive there was more emphasis on the actual production, and we spent a lot of time in the studio must making funny noises, really," Halstead said. "With Mojave we really wanted to try and get a sense of intimacy." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 04:04:41 EST From: Catchbreez Subject: liz well this is sorta off topic when to radiohead tonite in houston i cried it was so good and spiritualized was great too but the funnything is that the drummer (touring drummer only at the moment) for spiritualized said that the real drummer is dating liz (formerly of the cocteau twins and now working with massive attack) just had a child together last week steve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 04:19:54 EST From: Catchbreez Subject: Re: February an april march ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 23:59:56 +0200 (MET DST) From: son of dodge dart Subject: cornelius > > While we're on the subject of cd buying, anyone who also read a review > > about the band Corneilus(and how they sound like MBV/space rockish)should > > disregard what they read, and not but it, it's very disappointing. > > You know, I *did* read a review in the morning paper today - never heard > of the band before, but the name struck a chord somewhere - and you're > right, they did say something about MBV in there too, which made me put > it up on my "check out" list. Never Lose that Feeling! -------------------------------------------------------- Apologies for the cross post. Jeff from Color Wall sent this in to the Ride email list, and i'm forwarding it out to a few of the lists i'm on. I have their CD single (Flower EP), and it's absolutely fantastic. 3 songs, 15 minutes of shoegazing. It's fantastic. I think they have the capabilities to make it big, the songs are quite melodic, and pop, but still they don't lose the shoegazing we all love. If any of you are interested in the Flower EP, it's $5, and is available by sending a check to: Color Wall 642 N.
