I never could find a copy at Wal-Mart :) cory 1cc5776@unixstew.tstc.edu ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 09:22:34 -0600 (CST) From: "..." <1cc5776@unixstew.tstc.edu> Subject: Re: Jock Sturgess - *art or exploitation?* > I apologize if this is "flame bait", but it's *never* OK for a "cultural > elite" theory ("Some people just don't get it..") to pass unchallenged, > especially when people's lives are affected. Sturgess' > pictures are not innocence captured, they're innocence lost. regarding this post I'd like to say that throughout the course of it all I was disagreeing until I read the last line. If you look at those photographs, the expressions on the faces of those "naked young women and girls..." is NOT one of innocence captured but indeed of innocence lost, or at least of innocence ignored. we live in a sick world, and things like this really do numb us. So, although I don't necessarily agree with the tone of this person's post, I must agree with the general idea... and I thought they were just fine, but then I got to thinking about it... just ideas... cory 1cc5776@unixstew.tstc.edu ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 14:15:44 -0500 (EST) From: aaj292@agora.ulaval.ca (Christian Morin) Subject: Re: [mbv] skipping Lilys CDs (fwd) > Oh since I'm here, has anyone seen Greg Araki's movie 'Doom Generation'? In the movie The doom generation you can hear "Alison" from Souvlaki and "blue skied an clear" from Pygmalion but only that track feature on the soundtrack Chris ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 98 13:25:47 CST From: Crios@dminet.davidson-marketing.com Subject: Re[2]: Jock Sturgess - *art or exploitation?* Right on. Obviously this person must think of the listed bands as "ambient", you don't hafta knock them with sarcasm. It is easy to see how some may consider these ambient, although most of them fall into different genres of music categorization. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 01:56:50 EST From: Primarygrl Subject: Nike Ad The song on the Nike ad is "Bittersweet Symphony" by the Verve. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 02:05:44 EST From: Primarygrl Subject: Re: ambient for slowdive fans i can hardly believe no one mentioned Gusgus! Polydistortion has some neat electronic creations on it. i, personally, love the whole album, but as for ambient... the 10th song on the album, entitled "purple" is great. it has that "in mind" feel to it. someone said Flowchart. good recommendation. they are great. ummmm, i think if you don't mind checking out an album for one song on it, you might look into the most recent Boyracer album, with the song "we were wrong"...that song is really pretty and floaty... Main's Hz is a good album for ambient music. especially the first few tracks, where he sings. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 23:20:52 -0800 From: voltron Subject: Re: ambient for slowdive fans Primarygrl wrote: >> are these bands all really ambient music? I think you guys missed the part where he/she said in the original post that not all of these bands were ambient, some were rock, but he/she felt they would be good recommendations for slowdive fans. Sorry I don't have the orignal post. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 23:54:50 -0800 From: voltron Subject: Re: ambient for slowdive fans Primarygrl wrote: > i can hardly believe no one mentioned Gusgus! Also along the lines of gusgus I'd have to mention Halou, a husband and wife duo from San Francisco. Distorted beats and ethereal vocals and sounds reminiscent of Cocteau Twins but with a darker/harsher edge. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 05:30:55 EST From: Primarygrl Subject: Ambient: Third Eye Foundation I agree with whoever listed Third Eye Foundation as a band to check out. They are incredibly organic, yet still acheive a Warp/Rephlex Records-like feel, with rhythms that sometimes parallel Seefeel and Aphex Twin. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 05:28:19 EST From: Primarygrl Subject: verve/araki << Anyone here who likes The Verve? The Nike commercial (with the new theme, 'I Can') during the superbowl actually used 'Bittersweet Symphony'. I liked it. The song, I mean. And maybe the commercial itself. Oh since I'm here, has anyone seen Greg Araki's movie 'Doom Generation'? I think that movie featured one or two of Slowdive's songs. But I can't remember if those songs can be found on my only Slowdive CD, Souvlaki... >> the Verve's new album is great, but i cannot say the same for A Northern Soul... Strom In Heaven was much prettier. I don't really like the fact that their beautiful "Bittersweet Symphony" is the theme song for the new Nike ad. as for 'Doom Generation'....there was only one song by Slowdive, and it is "Blue Skied An' Clear", which is off of Pygmallion. One of my favorite Slowdive songs... I go to San Francisco, as I live a couple hours away, quite often. I have never heard of this band. Do they play shows there at all? I don't really like the fact > that their beautiful "Bittersweet Symphony" is the theme song for the new > Nike ad. just in case people missed it the first time around, "bittersweet symphony" is now owned by the rolling stones because of that sample, and they (or their publishing company, at any rate) are the ones who sold the licensing to nike. so the verve haven't totally sold out yet. but they still suck! :) i miss storm in heaven.... ; ed ------------------------------ End of Avalyn Digest Vol.98 #13 ********************************
