Everybody mentions either Pygmalion or >Souvlaki as the best thing Slowdive ever made. But no one mentions "Just >for a day". To me this is the ideal mix of sounds (which were more >important in the early days) and song (which dominates later). To me Pygmalion is not as interesting as the first two albums, but with Pygmalion they were showing their talent for introspective ambient, hypnotic music! To me Ride was great the first two albums after that they became average-good with carnival of light and suck big time with Tarantula! This is just my opinion! Chris ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 02:34:08 -0600 From: Gary Hendershot Subject: Ride *were* king > To me Ride was great the first two albums after that they became > average-good with carnival of light and suck big time with Tarantula! > This is just my opinion! ============================================================= [Caution: more opinions ahead!] I agree, avoid "Carnival Of Light." However, the "Birdman" CD-EP taken from that album is quite good. Another couple of recommended Ride goodies not mentioned are the "Kaleidoscope" CD -- which is a live recording released on Reprise, and the "Grasshopper" mini-album CD also on Reprise -- which is an excellent collection of their earlier CD-EPs that also has a somewhat controversial front cover. -Gary H- ghenders@gary-hendershot.com Houston, TX USA ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 09:20:43 -0600 (CST) From: "..." <1cc5776@unixstew.tstc.edu> Subject: Ride (more): was "Primal is King" >> What about Going Blank Again??? > > To me Ride was great the first two albums after that they became > average-good with carnival of light and suck big time with Tarantula! > This is just my opinion! I must agree! From everything anyone has said about this great band, I have to wonder. I was introduced to Ride's music with Going Blank Again and to my ears, every other album pales in comparison. It's intricacies and complexities keep me entertained for hours. Carnival of Light was pretty good, but not good enough to keep my attention and Tarantula just flat out sucks! I do like the earlier albums though, especially Smile (Drive Blind and Chelsea Girl are memorable). But I'd be willing to bet that there's a trend in here. How many of you would say that your favorite album by a band (as a general rule) is the one you heard when you were first introduced to the band. for me it's true of Swervedriver's Raise, Slowdive's Catch the Breeze, Charlatans U.K.'s Some Friendly, Ride's Going Blank Again, Spiritualized's LaserGuidedMelodies, Lush's Gala, The Pixies Doolittle and so many more. The first album I ever heard will remain the standard by which I judge all of their other releases. Sure it's biased, but that's just the way we are, it seems. Of course, there exceptions to the rule (several in my case) that I can think of. Is this true of anyone else? cory 1cc5776@unixstew.tstc.edu ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 10:18:49 -0800 (PST) From: Gage Crump Subject: Re: Ride (more): was "Primal is King" just my opinion, but i actually thought "going blank again" was a bit of a disappointment and everything after that was horrible. "nowhere" and "today forever" are some of the best music ever made, and "smile" is great too. i think "leave them all behind" is better to have than all of "going blank again"...back to slowive, i think all their stuff is beautiful. they are one of the few bands i like that have never produced a bad song. though i must say i am more emotionally connected to their early stuff, such as the first 3 e.p.'s (an old friend made a suicide movie with avalyn as the soundtrack) and "just for a day" and even "souvlaki" (this is cheesy, but i always connect souvlaki with Paris since the only time I was in Paris I found the souvlaki/blue day double CD there and listened to it in a friend's apartment with cheap red wine and homemade pasta)... another question, is anybody going to make that Slowdive rarities/live CD. i have Live at Oslo on tape but unfortunately it was somewhat eaten by my old tape player recently (this is an amazing live tape). I've yet to hear Beach Song/Take Me Down and a few others that i've only heard mentioned in a live context. well, I'd be very interested in getting such CD if it ever happens (i have access to a CD burner but I don't have much of the rare stuff myself). -gage ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 14:17:56 -0500 (EST) From: mike p Subject: Re: Ride *were* king > [Caution: more opinions ahead!] > > I agree, avoid "Carnival Of Light." However, the "Birdman" > CD-EP taken from that album is quite good. haha, thats kinda odd. for the record yes, nowhere and smile are where it's at for ride, but for what it is i LOVE carnival of light. it's a great psychedelic pop record. just pretend it isn't ride... and i have the birdman single too, but i think its kinda crap. it has birdman (a great tune), a stripped down single acoustic version of "rolling thunder" ( a nice instrumental off of COL) and 2 b-sides. one is ok, the other is full of horns.. tarantula... eeewwww, i don't know why i still own that one. every time the disk gets to the middle of "deep inside my pocket" and the cheezola talking part starts i have to take it out. sorry, im rambling. back to slowdivy topics mike ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 13:40:16 -0600 From: joroses@mail.utexas.edu (galaxy grave) Subject: Re: Ride (more): was "Primal is King" speaking of live at oslo...is there anyone on this list who'd be willing to do a dub trade? i have some live verve, mbv, and a tori tape (well, it's somewhere around here), and other rare stuff...blah blah blah...having never seen slowdive live me thinks oslo is one of those things i need to hear. thanks. :) joanna joroses@mail.utexas.edu ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 12:02:09 -0800 (PST) From: Kevin Wood Subject: Re: Ride (more): was "Primal is King" same with me...I would love to get a copy..... and I think the Slowdive rarities compilation is a great idea as well... > speaking of live at oslo...is there anyone on this list who'd be willing to > do a dub trade? i have some live verve, mbv, and a tori tape (well, it's > somewhere around here), and other rare stuff...blah blah blah...having > never seen slowdive live me thinks oslo is one of those things i need to > hear. thanks. :) > > joanna > joroses@mail.utexas.edu ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 15:23:46 -0700 (MST) From: michael maes Subject: Re: Ride (more): was "Primal is King" I have been on this list for a while and I am just going to throw out a thought. Is anyone willing to simply "tape" "burn" some live Slowdive material for anyone without asking for an arm and a leg. Slowdive is the most moving band that I have ever heard. Making this accessible to others simply from a gesture of good will to others who feel the same way...is this asking too much? hmmmmm good question. I saw Slowdive open for Adorable in Phoenix. It was incredible to say the least. I would love to get a copy of some live material but have nothing to trade for it. I do have all the ep's and the cd's but shouldn't have to part with them to get a hold of some live stuff ( i.e. trade) Maybe I am out there living with Utopian visions, but maybe there is some value to making ART (such as Slowdive) available to most. I agree whole-heartedly. With enough interest to generate a mailing list of tight, rapidly delivered responses. then there exists an audience who would never be able to acheive the higher order of Slowdive without the good will advances and educated dispersals of rare, spiritual and sacred Slowdive lives and unreleased out-takes. Does anyone else feel this way? Also, if trading is to be somewhat commenced, I believe the elders in holding should help construct a way for newcomers to "study" or ascertain certain high level recordings. Not cliqueish, but rather community minded. Any thoughts?
