Hi, This'll probably be a dumb question, but hey, i haven't heard much conversation about it in the few months i've been on Avalyn. I'm curious as to the general reaction to Mojave3 and "Ask Me Tomorrow" from those who were big Slowdive fans. My initial contact was through the strings version of Mercy, which is absolutely BRILLIANT. I got the album, and honestly i love it. In fact, i'd rank it as one of my favorite albums, probably even better than the Slowdive albums. (which i'm fairly new to as well) Anywho, I've found that people are surprisingly receptive to the album, so i've been lending it out to people, and they've been getting it themselves. I'm doing my best to hype Mojave3, i really hope they don't end up splitting. I'm feeling incoherent today Evan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Dec 1997 23:41:50 -0500 From: eddiej7@juno.com (i'll be your future boy) Subject: Re: Guitar Players Hi there, This email is rather old, but anyway... Are there any tabs for Mojave3 songs on the WEB? Has anyone worked them out? I'm just learning to play guitar, and i'd love to know how to play them. none of them sound like they should be too complicated, but maybe that's just me... So *please* send me any tabss of Mojave3 that you've got, or point me to a URL I found a tab to Visions of La on the web... If anyone wants it let me know. Speaking of songs from Pygmalion, is anyone willing to find Pygmalion for me, either old or new? I can't find it, and my deal to import it fell through. PLEASE, pretty PLEASE? Slowdive was music as art. They took their genre of music to another level. One that no band has been able to achieve. The "holding our breath" ep typifies what I am talking about. Hi, I like "Ask Me Tommorrow" nearly as much as the Slowdive albums, but not quite as much. I completely agree with Neil Halstead when he says that it is a natural progression from Pygmalion to "AMT". In fact, I think the progression to "AMT" is more natural than the progression from "Souvlaki" to Pygmalion was. It was generally recieved quite well by Slowdive fans, but a lot of big shoegazer fans were a bit dissapointed by the shift from Slowdive to Mojave 3, but Pygmalion wasn't a shoegazer album anyway. No offense if you fall into that catagory, but I wonder how many of you would have loved "AMT" if it had been Slowdive album number four, instead of Mojave 3 album number one. I know a few people who are **HUGE** Spacemen 3 fans, and they don't like Spiritualized. Why? Even though Spiritualized are a very natural continuation of the Spacemen, and actually an improvement on the ideas explored, they are not the Spacemen. I think this may be the case with a lot Slowdive fans. Of course, they also might have just not liked the album. I've rambled enough, I should study more. brad http://www.cs.usask.ca/undergrads/bdn116 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Dec 1997 23:39:36 -0600 From: Brad Nicholson Subject: Re: Unidentified subject! Now I love Slowdive a lot, but I don't know if I would go so far as to say they've had a very big impact on the music world. Sure, they've influenced a few bands, and they have a decent size following of devoted fans, but you have to remember that they really were not doing anything horribly original. Sure, they put there own spin on things, but if you want to lay the blame for for the influence they've had, lay it where it belongs, at the feet of My Bloody Valentine. Actually, most bands I would relate a Slowdive influence with (Windy and Carl, Bowery Electric, ect.) have vehemently denied being influenced by them. But I can see your point, and I still think that a few years down the road, the whole shoegazer thing is going to erupt again, and bands like Slowdive will finally get their due respect. brad At 10:06 PM 12/13/97 -0700, you wrote: >my only comment would be this: Mojave 3 is very good, but their creative >endeavors, up to this point, will never have the impact or the consequence >on the music world as Slowdive did/does. Subject: Slowdive Fan Reaction To Mojave I loved Slowdive when they were around and saw them a couple times. I also saw Mojave when they came around. I louve both of the bands and find them very similar. I thinque the only difference is that Mojave is a lot more accessible to the lazy listener. Milan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Dec 1997 04:20:27 EST From: Primarygrl Subject: Re: Unidentified subject! Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Evan, In my opinion, Slowdive shines FAR above Mojave 3. The Slouvaki album was the best! But, i am a fan of the more treated music, with effects and layers galore. Mojave 3 is good, but nothing comparable to Slowdive's accomplishments. It seems to me to be the stripped down version of Slowdive. I thought the songs were okay, but I missed the fact that Slowdive had a distinctive *sound*, whereas Mojave seems a lot simpler (which is also good, but not as interesting to me). My initial reaction on hearing the opening notes of "Love Songs on the Radio" was, "Wow, this really is different from what they used to do". But then Rachel's heavily effected voice came in and I thought, "Well, they haven't changed *that* much..." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Dec 1997 18:00:54 PST From: "michaelnicki barrett" Subject: Re: SHOEGAZE TRADE (UPDATED 14.12.97) > i would have to think about trading this..but i have the holding our >breath single signed...actually wait i wont trade it , sorry..i would >make a tape of it for you though How much do you want for it then???? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Dec 1997 20:30:15 -0600 From: avalyn Subject: looking for someone hello, i am looking for someone whose former e-mail address was chelsea_boy@hotmail.com. if you're here, please contact me. avalyn@funcity.newaygo.mi.us ------------------------------ End of Avalyn Digest Vol.97 #008 ********************************
