Hm, yes, due to recommendation from somewhere (Thierry / Micke) I fortunately already knew Sorten Muld before. Can't recall that special song soo good, but her voice is quite good on every song, yes, even if you may find some of those songs too "disco" or so .. but in general, a good choice, imo. And then there's "18th dye" on it ... mhm, they are (were ???) a danish / german combination, weren't they ? Had some stuff from "Tribute to a bus", if I recall that right! And, about the rest, never even heard of, so really looking forward to the tape! Last year all of you came up with absolutely fantastic lists of stuff to check out and I was wondering if any of you have any reccomendations for stuff that has come out within the last year that I'd be a fool for leaving the country without. I suppose to give you some basis in what kindof stuff I'm looking for I could say that past favorite swedish purchases include Bob Hund, Starmarket, Komeda, Randy, The Dorian Records "chance to shine" comp, carpet people and the first Girlsmen disc. Basically I suppose anything in the genres of indie-pop/rock, punk, ska or hardcore would be great. Or damned near anything for that matter... Anyway, think of it as a public service: help guide a poor misplaced swede in his purchasing expedition to reconnect with his homeland and spread the word about some swedish bands to over here. (NYC now has a rabidly devoted gaggle of Bob Hund fans--I showed them the copy of Ett fall och en losning I'd mail ordered and they almost beat me up for it.) I depart on friday night so the sooner the better, but hey... Thanks in advance! -martin. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Jul 1998 23:43:40 +0200 From: Henrik Engstroem Subject: Re: Help me bankrupt myself in sweden (recommendations please) Some recommendations that come to mind: The Mopeds "The hills are alive with the sound of mopeds" (Vibrafon). Komeda "What makes it go" (NONS). Tambourine Studios Vol II (Vibrafon), to hear the immaculate Chocolate Barry if nothing else. Liberator "Worldwide delivery" (Burning Heart) - ska superiors of Sweden with a delightful second album. The Hives (Burning Heart) - punk rock is best when played by brilliant 17 year olds. Freewheel "Starfriend" (Vibrafon) - carefully crafted melodies with a country touch at times. And I'm sure I've forgotten a few. About the Vibrafon releases, you can listen to samples from every release on the web page at www.vibrafon.se. /Henrik >Hey everyone, > > Well I'm off again on my annual journey back to sweden to visit >relatives and of course, more importantly, to buy music. My guess is that the 02 release was a Barefoot Brothers single (vinyl maybe?); I think there's one out there anyway. Also, I'd like to use this opportunity to second Alexander's recommendation of the Karkkiautomaatti CD; I think it is the best pop album released in Finland for a very long while. Here are four Swedish masterworks that got me all upset during my last couple of trips to Swedonia: Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come (Burning Heart) Yikes! Straightedge hardcore with a twist! MC5! James Brown! PopArt! Ward J. - Hold it Dear Your Career (NONS) Formerly "Ward J. Little". Delicate and slightly rusted Neil Young-ish ballad type behaviour. "Who Do You Love" is still one of my favourite '98 songs... K-Pist - Voltage Controlled (NONS) Mutated teenage hardrock hip-hop collision! Screeching analogue keyboards, pounding LedZep dums and manic Busta Rhymes' Swedish cousin on vocals. NO GUITARS! Songs mainly covering the themes of "space" and "war". Bjorn Olsson - Instrumental Music (Dolores) Guy who left The Soundtrack of Our Lives. AMAZING solo album recorded in the Swedish countryside last summer. All instrumental numbers featuring swirling, echoing hammond organ... part Ennio Morricone, part Pink Floyd circa '68. Totally haunting and unique. Apparently they're gonna run some free concerts there during the summer, but I didn't know until i opened the paper yesterday. Read about it: http://www.dn.se/DNet/articles/46600-46699/46670/barusta.html So this band Motorhomes opened. The gut reaction when you hear the name is not good, made me think of Mobile Homes *yuck*, but this was quite different. 5 nice boys from Jonkoping, perhaps mates with Cardigans, or at least frequents the same stylist. The vocalist was a real svarmorsdrom. I guess you could call his voice "beautiful", in that way that turn young girls on. Closest comparisons: Morrisey and Morten Harket (A-Ha). Backed by your generic indie band: Blur a la Modern Life Is Rubbish, with some acoustic guitar thrown in. Towards the end the poses got bigger, in the teathralical Kent stadium rock way. They rocked OK. But this wasn't what I had biked all the way from Farsta (45 minutes) to see. Barusta got on. From all I've read, I was so excited to finally see/hear them for the first time. Nathalie gave a striking first impact - draped in a long, red evening dress (remember PJ Harvey down by the water?), and a semi-acostic Hohner guitar. She's got long red-coloured hair, and self-confidence to fill any stage with her presence. The band were your generic "nice guy" indie fellows, with the looks of Bear Quartet or whatever (insert swedish indie band name here)... So when the music started I was surprised. Like early Verve and Spiritualized, you know, droning but still ever changing, unstructured but with a beat, flummigt but rocky at the same time. If you're a Verve-fan, listen to songs like So It Goes, On Your Own, All In the Mind. And Nathalie singing her lyrics, somtimes naive like nursery rhymes, sometimes girlish, sometimes with a dark, mature voice. Familiar, but yet very special, I can't place it. This lady has star quality. She uses her voice like a fine, delicate instrument, it sometimes builds up to soemthing strong. Although she doesn't shout like PJ. ;-) Towards the end they all freak out, it's getting harder and even more unstructured, like a 60's rock/Stooges thing. Nathalie plays the final song jamming a Festis-bottle on the strings of her guitar. Noise! And in the small audience, it seemed like the whole of Rock-Gothenburg for a moment had moved to Stockholm. Aptfully, I could spot at least one of the guys from Silverbullt, Nina Natri from Fidget, John Jern from Honey Is Cool, and Fredrik Norberg from Popsicle (OK, he's not from Gbg, but you can't seem to get rid of him ;-) Does anyone know when they play next?! Curious on more Barusta: http://www.nojesguiden.se/tidning/text/squash.html#Barusta http://www.starboy.se/artister/ They even have a real audio track, and it's good. Jan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jul 1998 13:39:38 +0200 From: "Micke Rehnstrom" Subject: Milliway? + demo band news Does anyone know anything about a Swedish record label called Milliway? Like who's behind it and if any other record company is involved? I am just curious, because they have just signed DURANGO 95 (whose "noFo" demo was "best demo" in the last issue of SA. Those with a good memory might remember that I wrote a short review of that demo on the list long ago) but not even the guys in the band seem to know very much about the label. And when I'm writing I might as well share with you some news about other bands, whose demo tapes I have mentioned on the list: BOB (THE BOBBY EWING FAMILY) - have relocated from Vimmerby to Stockholm where they, according to themselves, are playing a lot of gigs. They have contributed a few tracks for a compilation record and there are plans for a 10" vinyl record. I don't know the label. They said something about "Hell on wheels" but I don't know if that is the label or another band on the compilation (anyone else?). They will go on a tour with EM and KEVLAR in August. KAPOOR - released the 4-track CD-single "Be nice" recently (or are just about to release it?). It is on the label "Nature Always Wins" and I think it is their own label. If Girilal is still on the list and if he isn't too busy he might, perhaps, give us some more information. MICHAEL GREENE - these mod-inspired power-poppers from Umea doesn't exist anymore. A couple of the members have graduated from the university and moved away from Umea, so they decided to call it the day. They have made a CD with 21 tracks that have previously been on their demo tapes. If you are interested in the CD you can contact Olov Windelius at olletg@acc.umu.se . Well, perhaps someone was interested ;). My fave demo tape at the moment is the one from SADOVAJA SOUNDSYSTEM, which the Chief has already told you about. Trip-hop with a distinct "soul" feel in Sarah Assbrings voice. /Micke, who decided, yesterday, that "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley will be played at his funeral. Now I just need a cool way to die (right now there seems to be a huge probability that my book shelf will break down, so that I might be buried beneath my record collection. How's that? :) ) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Jul 1998 09:38:37 +0300 (EET DST) From: Jussi Ristikaarto Subject: Re: spiritualized > A friend of mine wonders if there's a Spiritualized Mailinglist out > there somewhere. Originally called the Hypnodrone list, it started as a kind of a fan list for Spacemen 3 et al. Nowadays covers not only the Pierce/Boom legacy, but is a real amphitheatre for discussion about music not-quite-of-this-earth. FSA, Labradford, the American 'indie-drone' scene (tons of bands out there I still haven't heard), old farty psyche-rock, spacerock, ethnic drone, equipment, FXs, etc. etc. The signal-to-noise ratio has remained decent and the overall atmosphere could be defined as relaxed. Luckily, no die-hard teen fans raving about the drug use or the car colour of his/her favorite star. On the contrary, it seems like most members (at least the non-lurker ones) are musicians of some sort: a tape compilation was put together back in 1996 by one of list head honchos Chris Barrus, featuring only artists/bands that had at least one member on the DroneOn list. Finnish spacejazzers Coo made an appearance on the tape. More info at the No-Fi Records pages, www.no-fi.com, the record label maintained by the aforementioned drone guru C. Barrus. Also, links to excellent Spiritualized pages and the Spiritualized web ring. Don't hesitate to ask me for more info if you need some... cheers, Jussi (jr53356@uta.fi) (jussi.ristikaarto@nokia.com) ------------------------------ End of Scandinavian Indie Digest Vol.98 #55 ********************************************
